Title: DS RPGs To Look Forward To?
Post by: Ohlichris on August 11, 2008, 08:00:53 pm
Couldn't really think of a better title. Anyway, here's a list of upcoming DS rpgs that may be of interest:

World Destruction

(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/worldd15.jpg)(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/worldd19.jpg)(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/worldd4.jpg)(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/worldd24.jpg)

World Destruction is a game designed by key members of the Xenogears team, most notably Masato Kato (director), Yasunori Mitsuda (composer) and Kunihiko Tanaka (character designer). Former staff from Grandia, Drakengard and Etrian Odyssey are also working on the game.
World Destruction is set in a world where humans are a minority, often used as slaves by beastmen.  The story revolves around a young man, Kyrie, who possesses immense destructive powers even though he does not know why, who ends up traveling with a woman named Morte, who happens to be part of the World Destruction Committee.

AWAY ~Tsuresarareta Hitobito~

AWAY is a rather unique looking game being developed by both Mistwalker and Artoon. The story involves a curse called "Away", which causes a person to mysteriously vanish from a village each year.

Tales of Hearts

Yep, another Tales of game. I'm not much of a Tales fan, but I'm thinking this is the first time that they've used non-anime character models, well at least for CG cutscenes. The battle shots look pretty good though.

Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One

When I first heard of the Accused One, I thought it would be a Lenneth-esque game for the PSP. Turns out it's for the DS. The protagonist is a young soldier named Wylfred who holds a grudge against Lenneth Valkyrie. Lenneth chose Wylfred's father, Thyodor, to become an Einherjar, taking his soul into her possession when Wylfred was a mere ten years old. Years pass and the young man's anger grows, until he is offered the Goddess's Feather, a feather shed from Lenneth's wings that was found near the corpse of his father, by Hel, the Queen of Niflheim. By becoming a renowned warrior like his father, he believes he can eventually be chosen to become an Einherjar himself, giving him the means with which to exact his vengeance.

Soma Bringer

(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/somabringer74.jpg)(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/somabringer79.jpg)(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/48612/somabringer71.jpg)

Soma Bringer is game created by Monolith Soft after being acquired by Nintendo featuring music by Yasunori Mitsuda.  The player's party consists of three members. Combat is in real time and takes place on the same map as exploration (a similar combat system to Secret of Mana, although magical attacks are also in real-time). It's already been released in Japan, and it's unsure when or whether it will be available in the west.

Out of all of these, the game I'm looking forward to the most is World Destruction, even though it features bizarre elements, like a pirate teddy-bear as party member.

World Destruction is the one that caught my attention most :)

ANd VP The Accursed One, I saw that way back and I can't tell if I'll like it. But must be patient...

Away reminds me of pokemon or is zelda a proper one ?

World Destruction LOOKS good but the story sounds horribly cliche.

Tales of Hearts also caught my eye... I'll pick it up if it ends up good.

I hope World Destruction is good and I also hope I get to play it someday if it is. :soap:

ahahahaha "tales of hearts".

these all look really bad to me apart from possibly "away" but since it's being made by mistwalker i don't have much interest.

i'm in the midst of really giving my ds a chance to not be shit right now (got an edge flash card thing) and all the rpgs which i've played for it so far have been around the quality of rm2k3 games. this stuff looks like more of the same, although there is something interesting stuff coming up for the ds i think so i'm going to keep it.

and i thought valkyrie profile had female leads? i mean a valkyrie is a kind of female warrior, right? that seemed like one vaguely admirable thing about those games.

Tales of Hearts.......they name a game Tales of Hearts? TALES OF MOTHER FUCKING HEARTS?! Anyway, it looks decent but bandai namco must be running out of names. Whats next, Tales of Swords?!
Edit: Oh yea, if they bring this to america, we would be ripped off probably because the other DS tales game(tales of innocence, not tales of the tempest because that was shit) looks far superior and it is stupid that its not coming here due to christianity refrences in the game's story and im dead serious about that!

I hear soma bringer is really fun to play. It's probably one of the closest games that plays like diablo 2 for the ds. However, there is no signs of it coming to north america :(.

No one's interested in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (http://www.gametrailers.com/game/6646.html)?  Or is this a fantasy-themed-rpg only topic...

Hey what about Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled?

It used to be called Project Exile and was originally made for the GBA, but then they decided to switch to the DS and give it a really long name.
Looks pretty interesting to me. According to Wikipedia, it's supposed to be out September 15. Apparently, it's going to be delayed again.

the new valkyrie profile game is about a mortal pissed off at the valkyries so he tries to kill them (meaning it's a generic rpg since you're not playing as an immortal).

jamicus, i don't even know why you still waste money on vidyas.  fallout 3 will probably be the last game i buy this year but only because i already paid for it.  i've been playing old pc games and dwarf fortress for the past 4 months.

This Valkyrie Profile's story does seem toned down to possibly aim for a younger demographic but the gameplay looks decent

Really, they need to make a fallout game for DS. Not like the new one but old school. I am pissed off with REPEATEDLY seeing japanese RPGs with anime characters. Where's the bloody mess in that?

dragon quest 4.......

Actually, I created this topic to showcase DS rpgs which haven't been getting much attention. That's the reason I didn't include Sonic and Dragon Quest IX. I was thinking about adding more games, including the Dragon Quest DS remakes.

i generally don't. the ds i bought a long time ago and i've got a month of free time before uni starts so i'm just plowing through all it's games to see if there is anything good. fallout 3 will also be the only other game i buy this year. i probably should learn to stay away from topics like this so i'll do that from now on.

Holy shit, I remember this! It always reminded me of Seiken Densetsu 3 so I might actually get this when it comes out.

If Tales of Hearts doesnt come out, i'll just import it, but I'm pretty sure Valkyrie Profile: Accused One will come state side, it looks pretty good, while I wasn't a huge fan of Valkyrie Profile 2, I bet this make up for it. :P (I hope...)

Valkyrie Profile: The Accused One looks to be a tactical RPG judging from that last screenshot. Anyone know if it is? Or isn't?

These all look pretty good, but I get the feeling it'll be like all the other RPG's on my DS. Get interested, buy them, play for an hour and never touch them again because they're generic/dull/uninspired.

The only RPG's for DS I've actually finished are FFIII and Mario & Luigi which I both really enjoyed. I'd already finished FFIII on a NES emulator though and M&L is really short. If Rocket Slime counts as an RPG I really liked that too.

The rest I really couldn't care about. Etrian Oddysey does look interesting but it's actually different. I can't see anything about these games that really stand out at all apart from different coats of paint. I haven't finished an JRPG for ages and I don't think it's that I don't like them anymore, I just think I'm sick of generic shit and I want to see something interesting. Or at least a good story. As soon as game makers start developing for DS the story becomes a huge tacked on afterthought which isn't at all satisfying or interesting (bar the few adventure games which are actually good).

These all look pretty bad honestly. I did play soma bringer though (in jap) and almost beat it. It is actually pretty fun at first but ends up getting really boring. It plays like diablo (acts, items, skill trees, waypoints) but with a dpad, so it is a good hack and slash. The ai companions are completely useless and the story from what I could gather was some generic jap bs with lovable anime characters. Each class has 3 skill trees though, and you can change the points in them at any time which is nice, there are also tons of items with lots of stats to customize. But the enemies all play the same, so each act is more of the same.

World Destruction's story sounds really bad. It looks like it has a lot of potential but with a story like that why do they even bother!

World Destruction and Tales I'm kind of digging, though not so much the other two.  Another RPG (though no tentative release date outside Japan just yet) I'm looking forward to is Sigma Harmonics.

Tales of Hearts has a RIDICULOUS name but it's the only one out of those that I'm looking forward to. I suppose that one by Mistwalker could be good.

yeah not to discount some of the good ones, but everything pretty much seems typical japanese RPG style from the releases I've seen TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Tales of Hearts looks pretty good.  I'm a huge Tales of Symphonia fan, and I enjoyed Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny, but I wasn't too crazy about Legendia or Abyss.

Still looks worth checking out, though.  I'll probably pick that one up.  The others, kinda eh.

tales of hearts looks pretty awful imo. not only is the name really fucking ridiculous but none of those screenshots look like they're for the same game. tales of innocence looked like the only good thing to come out of the tales franchise in a while though, its a shame its not coming over here.

the other ones besides AWAY all look pretty boring/generic
