Title: Gaming World Fantasy "Soccer" League 2008/09 - COME HERE FOOTBALL FANS
Post by: tuxedo marx on August 11, 2008, 08:47:24 pm
Well this was mostly Wash Cycle's idea so you have him to thank! (or shout at)

GW FANTASY SOCCER

The English Premier League offer a great fantasy football game on their website, and WC suggested we should get in on the action! If there's any fans of real football (ho ho ho) in all the Gaming Worlds then this topic is for you!

If you want to play, first go to http://fantasy.premierleague.com/ and register an account (it's free :D). It'll ask for a username as well as your real name and date of birth, but don't worry too much because your name will only be viewable inside the deliberately private league, and your DoB won't be at all AFAIK.

Once you've done that, you'll be asked to set up your team details! Give yourself a cool team name and a cool looking strip, then continue.

Right, this is the interesting bit: you'll be asked to set up a team roster by choosing from players in the Premier League. Be careful! You have a budget of £100 million and a 15 man roster to fill (that's 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders and 3 forwards), so spend that money wisely. All players have scores depending on their stats and prices relative to those scores, so it's not too difficult to do.

Okay, you've got yourself a fantastic team! A bit of a problem though, no one to compete with. Don't worry, that's where I come in. I've set up a private Gaming World league so that us GWers can compete. I'm already in the league and I've invited Wash Cycle by e-mail, but if you want to join yourself you'll have to enter the following code under the Leagues tab: 883127-161958

Okay, you're all set! Points are awarded by the players' performances in real life, so I'd advise you keep an eye on the actual English Premier League; match reports and fixtures are available at the website. If you want this properly explained, be sure to read the Rules (http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/rules.mc). (actually I'd advise that everyone do this)

Our season starts on the 23rd of August (the second gameweek), so it'd be a good idea to join before then, but we'll still be accepting teams after then, albeit at a disadvantage.

Be sure to post your team name and roster in this topic so that we can keep track of who's who!

So far our teams are:

(note that I haven't got any official GW endorsement, I wasn't sure how to go about that!)

this is cool I *might* join, but it all depends. I'm assuming this is about as time consuming as the football league was (read: not at all)?

Um could you explain this? I am tripping over grammar here.

For reference my team is Sheldon Steel FC! our soccer legs will score the points!

Well yeah, all this really requires is one weekly input before the gameweek deadline to do your team selection for the week. Anything extra like transfers etc. can be done any time. The gameweek deadlines are up in the Rules - we're starting on gameweek 2. To save even more time I'm gonna try to post each week's league standings in this topic so you can just look at them here. It's a really passive game!

Registration that requires 2 or any amount of numbers is gay. Who is going to tamper with the password to a fantasy football site?! Really.

The Dudesoft Sumos will win.

I'm Gustavus Adolphus (part of my real name btw) and I'm managing Dynamo Delaware

man, so last season and basically ever since I've been following football I always rooted for Blackburn Rovers, but with Mark Hughes, David Bentley and possibly Roque Santa Cruz gone next season, honestly I think I'm just going to start following Man. City and Tottenham more (for whatever reason FSC plays the shit out of their matches on the weekends anyways). Its going to be such an intense Premiership campaign, I am so excited. I'd be looking for Sunderland to break into the top 10 and Man City into the top 5 honestly. Also I hope that Chelsea falls flat on their faces what with all that money they've spent this summer godddd

Also FSC has the rights to the Serie A which I follow kind of passively, but of course I watch shit like the Roma/Lazio and Milan/Inter derbies and shit like that beacuse its great fucking football. If I had to pick a club to support through and through though it'd be Inter just cause of Zlatan haha

I've always had a soft spot for Blackburn because of players like Bentley and Friedel, but since both of them have already gone I'm pretty much in the same boat! And yeah, definitely Man. City or Portsmouth to break the top 5 this year. It'll be tough at the top! (Gustavus Adolphus?!? I refuse to believe that ;) )

Also Dudesoft your team is not showing up in the league, and neither is yours eddie! Have you joined it?

Count me in with my team: Footie N'all

I know absolutely nothing about football other than how well Newcastle's doing (and even then, primarily relative to sunderland) so my team is made up of people i liked the look off.
Putting 'Bent' in forward wsa a particularily good move. Bent forward! How we laughed.

sorrrrryy I was at work all day

I'm going with a 3-4-3 because I am a bastard (that formation is terrible IRL but for fantasy purposes it is fantastic)

GK: David James [Portsmouth]
LB: Joleon Lescott [Everton]
CWP: Rio Ferdinand [Manchester ][/Manchester]
RB: Luke Young [Aston ][/Aston]
LMF: Cesc Fabregas (C) [Arsenal]
CMF: David Bentley [Tottenham]
CMF: Simon Davies [Fulham]
RMF: Nicky Butt [Newcastle]
LWF: Roque Santa Cruz [Blackburn]
RWF: Dean Ashton [West ][/West]
CF: Dimitar Berbatov [Tottenham?]

subs:

GK: Brad Friedel [Aston ][/Aston]
DEF: Johan Djourou [Arsenal]
DEF: Danny Higgenbotham [Sunderland]
MID: Michael Johnson [Manchester ][/Manchester]

I basically went with the players that treated me best last season and filled in the gaps with filler players lol. when christiano ronaldo is fit to play he'll be in my squad more than likely, he was through the fucking roof with fantasy points last season. also, rockman: I'd almost put money on blackburn getting relegated this season, or finishing in the bottom 5 (unless of course Ince turns out to be amazing and they score Timoschuk from Zenit) Its a damn shame, but damn the off season was rough

also yes Gustavus Adolphus is on my birth certificate so yeah (my first and middle name, followed by the most common swedish last name one could have which some here have heard before but whatever heheh)

Fantastic! Who's your captain? Whoops I guess I'm blind! (also good job with filling, Michael Johnson and Simon Davies are fantastic)

I was tempted to go 4-3-3 myself but I probably wouldn't have had enough money for good enough players. Probably need a better forward than Dean Windass, I don't see him scoring too many this season!

the reason I went with Dean Ashton was because A) I only had like 6.5 points to spend on a striker, and B) I got to see him play in person this year when West Ham played the Columbus Crew (and he was deadly) and C) he was fantastic in the MLS all-star game. He scored some pretty fantastic goals last season, especially that beautiful bicycle kick against Manchester United, and I think that if he is on form he may well end up with 15-20 goals on the season.

also I'm suprised only one or two people have picked Darren Bent, holy shit he has been a scoring machine in the pre-season. I mean we're talking like a run of 5 or 6 games with 2 - 4 goals in a row. fucking incredible

Haha, I've been more focused on Marcus Bent so naturally Darren has slipped under my radar a bit! There's still time for transfers if he turns out to be lethal in front of goal. :D

Post by: Wash Cycle on August 17, 2008, 01:49:08 am
Well, I'll be honest. I was impressed with what I saw today. I dont know how I feel about Paul Robinson yet, but the only obvious weak link in Blackburn's starting 11 was Steven Reid out in place of David Bentley. If they can somehow manage to fill that gap I think they're looking at finishing much like last season, in the top 10 at the very least. I also liked what I saw from Paul Ince tactically, especially on set plays (upon which Ooijer was able to manage the winner which Ryan Nelson would have gotten anyway if not for the far post heh). I was not looking forward to seeing Rovers without Friedel and Bentley, but now that Santa Cruz is definitely staying I am feeling pretty upbeat.

That said I feel like an idiot for leaving Fabregas in my fantasy squad and not putting in Johan Djourou (he got 6 points for 90 min and a clean sheet and 3 bonus points argggggg) Thank god for Dean Ashton though or I wouldnt have a whole lot of points.

Deco has saved me on both weeks.

Seriously, I've paid far too much attention to this. I was swearing at the television everytime Elano scored today. That bastard. And CAREW. Go to hell Dicko, you have a randomly awesome squad.

I can't believe Djourou could be going to the French league too, he played so well last week and all of a sudden he could get the boot. It's pretty lame. Plus Richards going off the pitch on a stretcher, bad times.

woa im actually doing good. also i changed my strikers arounda  bit, out with bendtner and in with elmander (patriot!!!). elmander got hurt last game though otherwise i would get regular points from him as he's probably the best bolton player so they'll play him 100% of the times. :(

haha my downfall in this will be the fact that I dont pick players that I hate so I miss out on most of the Chelsea and Liverpool and Aston Villa points lol

its fun but it mostly gives me an excuse to root for one side or the other in all the games that I am a neutral that they broadcast on our ONE football channel that I get (of course I get telemundo that shows mexican soccer and sometimes spain too but next year at school I will get deutsche-wille which means BUNDESLIGA whooo)

3 Man U players and 3 Portsmouth players, including my goalkeeper and one of my strikers! (also fuck Windass never plays it's transfer time)

EDIT: Van der Sar just gave me 7 points, Ferdinand 6 and Distin and Crouch 2 each (and Neville 0 booooo). gyahahahahahahahahahaa

Fuck that still only puts me in 5th. :( Since I have only had a substitute goalie since the start of the season that is not bad though!

Dirk Kuyt has been playing a lot out to the wings in the pre-season and what I have seen so far. I don't expect him to get many goals this season, though assists and bonus points are always something to play for too (however even though he may be deployed as a midfielder by Benitez this season, he is probably still a forward according to the fantasy game so you dont get any clean sheet points either heh, though I havent checked and I could be completely talking out my ass)

but yeah, better for the Oranje than for the Reds anyway lol

Fuck you 2 of my fielded players (three you shitty system) have played so far so watch this space!

EDIT:

Okay so:

Quote from: Rules
...

To change your formation simply select your chosen eleven players on the My Team page. The computer will automatically chose your formation based on the players you have selected. a

...

Any changes you make to your team will become active at the next deadline. b

...

Any changes to your team (substitutions, transfers, captain changes, substitution priorities) must be made by the Gameweek deadline to take effect for that set of matches. c

a b No it didn't!

c I did this!

So basically I have no idea what has happened here but I feel a bit cheated... out of 15 points.

You do realise you have to actually choose your team first. And that it's only Saturday, they play football tomorrow too. And that Zaki will most likely be substituted when your substitutes are processed at the end of the weekend?

Anyway, here we go:
SCORES FOR TODAY (minus substitutes etc obviously):
1.(-) Dicko's Das Booty F.C. - 24
2.(-) crumply's Red Conspiracy - 22
3.(-) Wash Cycle's Dynamo Delaware - 22
4.(-) Cheshire Cat's Footie N'all - 18
5.(-) Rockman's Sheldon Steel FC - 13
6.(-) Esh's James Blunt FC - 2
7.(-) Vesper's The Habbas - 1

-.(-) Dudesoft's The Dudesoft Sumos - 65

CURRENT OVERALL:
1.(1) crumply's Red Conspiracy - 78
2.(3) Dicko's Das Booty F.C. - 71
3.(5) Cheshire Cat's Footie N'all - 57
4.(2) Esh's James Blunt FC - 56
5.(4) Vesper's The Habbas - 46
6.(6) Wash Cycle's Dynamo Delaware - 43
7.(7 Rockman's Sheldon Steel FC - 40

Me and Vesper rock. I have 9 players due to play tomorrow, 8 of them in my starting 11.

Yeah, did this esh (no shit!), and "2 of my fielded players have played so far" might've been a clue. As for Zaki being substituted, that's unlikely considering he was bottom of my substitutes when I looked at my points earlier! (rather than on the field where I put him aaaaargh)

man today was a really disappointing day

derbyshire's goal getting called back as offside (he was a whole step onside when they showed the replay sadly), roberts having his penalty saved and then the meltdown at the end :( I wasn't too impressed with vince grella either

and as I said before mike riley is absolute garbage. he refereed the fixture between west ham and blackburn at ewood park last season and totally muddied up that match as well.

yeah, but the transfer window is going to close in the next 3 hours and none of that money has been spent yet (berbatov still in the UTD hospital is really not looking good for him to go over and do exactly the same for City in just 3 hours)

the only way to make today even more epic is if David Villa or Robinho magically turn up at the Manchester airport since both City and UTD have bid for both of them, more mind games.

Yeah, so Cavalho is out for a month and I've used my transfer for the week (not really that interested in going 4 points down). Djourou better be used on the weekend otherwise I'm not looking too great.

EDIT: Fuck. Deco is out til October and Nasri is still a doubt. Bloody injured foreigners.

fuck yeah Van der Sar is fit for the weekend. only Petrov (Martin) and Kranjcar injured for me, and Petrov should be back soon.

EDIT: taken a 4 point deduction for 2 transfers: Bentley for Babel and Lennon for Wright-Phillips. Can't see Tottenham doing much this season.

crumply is a machine

i have deco, nasri, cavalho and kim now injured. i actually made a point of watching kim get injured in the first minute of the west brom game, but apparently i missed it. i stupidly made a transfer before realizing nasri and deco were full on injured, so i thought i'd risk it instead of wasting points. maybe not a good idea.

Rockman goes to third, Dicko gets pushed down, I leapfrog over Vesper. Plus crumply has lost his lead, so another bad week and he could be in second.

Plus Rockman, you don't deserve to have 56 this week you bastard, R Dunne scoring an own goal should've put you into minus scores for him. (Robinho~)

So, I had an ace week which apparently took me from 6th position to 3rd, Rockman has sunk two places from his original 3rd place to 5th, Dicko has sunk from 5th to 7th, letting vesper overtake him, and with Wash Cycle only two points from climbing the table. Also, crumply retains his top spot, despite Dudesoft going above him yesterday.

*pow*

Robinho(od), Robinho(od), Robinho(od). 34 points. I would've had more if I hadn't messed up the substitution, so they took a 1 pointer instead of 6.
