Do you enjoy the cartoons nowadays? It is really hard for me to get into stuff like Bleach and Death Note and the rest of the anime and the only cartoons I enjoy nowadays is stuff like South Park, Boondocks and Futarama, but a lot of that stuff is aimed toward adults. So nowadays, all I can do is flip the channel on Boomerang! and hope I can enjoy the good old days of cartoons... do you remember those days? When there were PSA's and the characters in every cartoon did not have big eyes and small mouths.
So out of nostalgia, I've compiled a list of 50 cartoons from my childhood that I really enjoyed.
N.B. These are mostly cartoons that ran for Generation X and Y or before the year 2000 and most likely do not show anymore. Didn't include stuff like The Simpsons, Futarama, South Park, Spongebob Squarepants, etc. because that stuff is still running strong today.

1. Rocko's Modern Life
Discuss the cartoons you enjoyed as a child and still hold dear to you.
-
rocko's modern life was the best seriously. but you put the wrong images for rugrats and garfield.
-
Batman: The Animated Series was one of my favorites as a kid, I'm kind of surprised you don't have it up there.
-
Since I grew up in Poland, and we only had 2 tv channels at that time, there wasn't much variety in cartoons, but they were actually a family event! Every night there would be a cartoon airing right before bedtime, so that all the children could watch it with their family before going to sleep. It was pretty fun and very memorable. It's kind of sad how now the world is so different... but anyways,
My two favourite childhood shows were:
Muminki
(http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/4561/muminki111uk4.gif)
&
Gumisie
I recently downloaded seasons 1-3 of the show (in English unfortunately) but I love it! I'm surprised at how well this cartoon still stands up today. It's so much better than modern cartoons and much more wholesome - although there are quite a few adult jokes strewn about, which I'm only now getting. Of course as a child you were oblivious to them, but this is pretty funny.
-
Yeah. I dunno. I never used to watch "action" cartoons much, which explains absence of Batman, Technoman, Galaxy Rangers, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Beast Wars, G-Force and company, unless there was comedy added to it, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Samurai Pizza Cats. Aside from that, I only liked Jonny Quest and a few others. I was more into slapstick comedy like Rocko or shows about "real life"-ish shit like Charlie Brown, Doug and Hey Arnold.
-
the 90s was the "peak" decade for cartoons before the fcc demanded more educational shit in 1999.
that, and networks allowed a lot more adult humor as one of disney's techniques was to have a family friendly broad appeal while still sprinkling in jokes here and there. Rocko's Modern Life actually had a reference to JFK assassination and Hey Arnold featured a lot of things that would be considered "taboo" today (like Phil punching out Hitler in the veterans day episode and the pretty mature Mr. Hyuhn Vietnam back story).
anyways, besides the ones already mentioned i have a huge boner for anything loony tunes and i also liked aeon flux and the one fucking season of sam and max. the video game cartoons were hilariously bad (captain n, super mario, sonic, zelda) but they are forever engraved in my childhood.
the 80s brought on some really ridiculous cartoons specifically TURBO TEEN (a teenager drives off the road and gets zapped by some experimental ray and whenever he's subjected to intense heat he turns into a FUCKING CAR that his black friend and lily white girlfriend ride around in to stop crime JESUS CHRIST) and the star trek series.
-
My favourite childhood cartoon was The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin, based on the anamatronic toy/childrens books, where Teddy and his friends Grubby and Gimmick search for the Treasure of Grundo by seeking out the Hard-To-Find city and battling the Gutang Warriors, while rescuing Prince Aaron and Princess Arusia and then being all around good friends and having some cool adventures in the episodes thereafter.
-
My family was pretty poor when I was a kid, so we only really got the few free ontario channels, like Global etc.
Therefore, I only got to watch a few cartoons. Shows as a kid to me weren't too huge an influence, however here is what I watched:
Transformers, Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles, Inspector Gadget, and we'd rent some from Jumbo Video occassionally. Mostly we watched shows like Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show, Power Rangers, and Mr. Dress-Up. Then at lunch, we'd come home for soup, The Flintstones, and this austrailian cartoon about a platypus and stuff.
When I was a teenager though, all the good stuff came on. Saved by the Bell, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Batman the Animated Series, Transformers: Beast Wars (called Beasties in Canada lol), Sail--sail---gulp--sailor moon..., and uh uh uh The Secret World of Alex Mack.
Honestly, there never was a good time for cartoons / tv. It's always awesome NOW. Look back, and you see how absolutely terrible it was.
-
I can only really remember Beast Wars, Digimon, Medabots, K-Kim Possible (that's a little more recent, though), uhhhhhhh Power Rangers even though it's not animated, The Underdog (they showed it really early on weekdays), Dungeons and Dragons...
uh yeah we didn't have cable.
-
Yeah Strangeluv I agree with a lot of your list. I used to watch Nickelodeon a LOT so yeah...
Doug was one of my favorite shows. I loved Rocko's Modern Life, The Angry Beavers, CatDog, Rugrats, and Hey! Arnold. The shows I mainly watched on Cartoon Network were like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Looney Toons, Batman: Animated Series, and Dexter's Lab.
I don't know man, like I really wish there was a turn-back time button. I say this A LOT because seriously, a lot of parts of life get shittier as you age. You can still have loads of fun, but I don't know, most people can't find fun in the simple things anymore. And even if you are having fun, it's not as "filling" at times.
I just remember being a kid (born in 1991), and I would just have the best time of my life waking up on Saturday morning to watch cartoons.
-
the 90s was the "peak" decade for cartoons before the fcc demanded more educational shit in 1999.
Pfft. I always preferred the sixties and earlier with the whole Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies as well as the Disney shorts. Cartoons have never gotten better than that.
-
Hey Arnold! was the best show in the whole world. Too bad the movie sucked.
Also: Doug (before it went to Disney...) and SpongeBob Squarepants.
-
I remember Swat Kats! And, uh... Mummies Alive. And 2 Stupid Dogs, and Gargoyles. Wow, this brings back a lot of awesome memories! I loved these things when I was younger.
-
I've been noticing lately that the TV netowrks have pretty much done away with the monumental weekly event of Saturday morning cartoons. You'll only find it on the family or kids networks now, but I remember when I was a kid you could watch entertianing TV on a Saturday from 6 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon without ever changing the channel. It was a glorious thing. But of course your folks would never let you just sit there the whole time, but the fact that the stuff was on was the best part.
Stupid parents groups, trying to blame TV for why thier kids are fat.
-
I miss that stuff, man. Saturday morning cartoons... just wait until Saturday and watch cartoons all Saturday. That was my fix.
-
Oh man.... Thanks for ruining my day (again) strangeluv. Now I'm full of nostalgia.
I have GOT to torrent some of this shit
(I really HATED Freakazoid though :\ )
-
Tom and Jerry should be the number 1 cartoon ever... also swat cats jeez man this does bring back memories.
also also Rocko's modern life had so many sexual / adult jokes in there
-
Oh yeah I used to watch Tom and Jerry a lot too! Along with Top Cat.
Man, the memories I get from this. It makes me really want to be back there.
-
Pretty much the majority of Strangeluv's list is the stuff I watched when I was still shittin' green.
Though even today, Looney Toons is still one of my favorites. :fogetlaugh:
-
Strangeluv I would probably just post your exact same unedited list over again.
However I also liked action cartoons like Gargoyles and the Marvel cartoons etc.
-
90s were the best years for cartoons. Now they just SUCK!
-
my favorite cartoon used to be The Real Ghostbusters. I just found out the other week that it came out on DVD finally, so I picked it up!! It's awesome to be able to relive these classic episodes, especially since today's cartoons have dropped so much in quality. Tons of cool special features too.
-
Bucky 'o Hare ftw
-
anything with 'the animated series' after i enjoyed.
the video game cartoons were hilariously bad (captain n, super mario, sonic, zelda)
i don't know if it's included but sonic, the animated series (i think it might have been called the adventures of sonic or something) was awesome. the one with the blue streak opening. the rest sucked.
-
There was this really good Sonic animated series It was like kinda dark and very serious, right before they made sonic all girly.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(SatAM)
Here it is, it ruled.
-
yeah that's the blue streak opening, as we in the industry call it.
-
sonic has always seemed to have a conflicting personality if you ask me.
He doesn't seem to be a complex enough character to be able to be quick and rude, as the song would suggest, and be the responsible role model character that he plays when tails is introduced.
my favorite cartoon is road rovers by far though.
-
The number one cartoon of all time:
-
Bucky 'o Hare ftw
when i was little i had a vhs with like two or three episodes of bucky o'hare on it, and i watched it all the time. i don't think i ever saw another episode of it though
-
Ren & Stimpy, even though I did not understand a damn thing that was going on I liked it for some reason. Some of Stimpy's lines are still stuck in my head but my absolute favorite episode was a space one where they were in some kinda weird warped dimension and Ren was losing his sanity.
Bump in the Night (if this counts, does clay animations count?), that two eyed purple spotted bed monster I found hilarious, though the turkey-saurous-robot one creeped me out and the one time the sleeping kid wakes up and was a cucumber scared me.
Samurai Jack, this one is an oldie and all the ones you find now are just reruns, this one was surprisingly deep despite how action and B-rated it was at times. My favorite character of all time the machine gun legged Scotsman.
-
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/57/Trapdoor15.png)
I am really glad they repeated The Trap Door when I was young. :)
-
Aside from stuff that has already been mentioned - The Tick.
As an honorable mention, Galtar and the Golden Lance.
-
maaaan 90s cartoons were the best. i loved all of these (Not sure if all of them are the official names or whatever):
-Rugrats
-Powerpuff Girls
-Sonic
-Doug
-Rocko's Modern Life
-The Smurfs
-Hey Arnold
-Pokemon
-Looney Tunes
-Tex Avery cartoons
-Dexter's Lab
-Megaman
-Animaniacs
-Secret Squirrel
-Freakazoid
-Tom and Jerry
-2 Stupid Dogs
-Duck Tales
-X-Men Cartoon
-Extreme Dinosaurs
I was huge fans of all of those up to when i was around 7 or so and they started canceling them :[ but man i was definitely that kid who would wake up on saturday mornings to watch cartoons. good times.
-
I never heard of that james bond jr. cartoon.
-
lol that's like the least james bond looking dude ever
also all the 90's action cartoons look really bad now like I think even high-profile top-drawer stuff like fucking NINJA TURTLES would be like, hard to even sit through a single episode anymore
I think people have to remember that at that age there's a chance you never even saw stuff like A CONSTRUCTION SITE or THE ORIENT or UPSCALE RESTAURANT before so obviously the writers/animators are going to seem like total geniuses
yeah you pretty much have to get through every animal/dinosaur too, I mean imagine how easy making one of these cartoons is if you have a talking dog in there you'll probably get a trillion viewers instantly
the old Nickelodeon cartoons do seem kind of interesting though, I do plan on watching Rocko's Modern Life again sometime so I can catch all the dirty jokes and see if it's funnier as a show for adults
I forget when Rocko's Modern Life got cancelled but I remember the last year they changed the restaurant from Chokey Chicken to Chewy Chicken
also I need to do the same thing with old Simpsons episodes, although I think I was pretty ok as long as it wasn't a sex/random celebrity you don't know as a kid joke, oh and I wouldn't have realized that Otto was a druggie and if anyone was gay/lesbian and any Jewish jokes, and the whole Apu/Quickie-Mart thing I think I thought he was black ok
but everything that's left after that I probably got
did I mention I always liked the absolute druggiest cartoon possible that was around at the time, like it's not a cartoon per se but I loved Pee-Wee's Playhouse and uh STICKIN AROUND (ask Marcus we had an in-depth discussion about childhood cartoons a while back) like even specific stuff I remember like I liked the episode of the Simpsons with the Guatemalan Insanity Peppers
-
My favorite simpson ep was when bart burn the butterfinger wrapper and it made the franchise to stop using Bart as their propaganda icon...classic. Those guys lost millions on purpose...hahaha....you should download that ep dude, or just go to wtso.net...
