What the heck?
Okay, so inspired by the Beijing Olympics which are currently on the rage on the other side of the world, myself and others have come up with some crazy idea to create our own GW Olympics, where the contestants will represent their countries in different events, in an attempt to win the most medals for their country.
This is basically an interest topic to see how many people would want to take part in the different events. You'll be able to take part in as many events as you want, and here are the list of events currently in planning:

Soldat 2v2 Capture the Flag Event
Similar to the old school Soldat tournaments that have taken place in the past, we will be taking teams of two of any nationality to compete in a knock out tournament to win the three medals on offer. The teams will be randomised and put into a bracket, and the teams will battle it out on several different stages until there is are gold, silver and bronze medalists at the finals.

Speedrun Single Level Event
The level will be chosen by a poll and suggestions are open for the single level challenges. When the event begins and the level announced, competitors will be able to send in their medal attempts and be entered onto the leaderboard. But are you fast enough to win a medal?

Netplay Tournament Event
The game hasn't been chosen yet, but get ready for some knock-out tournament event action. Pick your fighter and get training, a medal for your country awaits.

Team Fortress 2 Team Event
Team Fortress 2 was a must for the Olympics, so expect some team battles. Noone is sure what the rules or regulations for this is yet, but they'll eventually be released.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament Event
Battle your way to a medal in this SSBB tournament, hopefully it'll be the biggest yet, since the last SSBB tournament that actually happened was before the European version was released. This could be interesting.

Call of Duty 4 Singles Tournament Event
Think you can fair up against others in singles combat? Depending on numbers, this could happen on the 360 or PC version. We'll see how many people are interested first.

Chess Tournament Event
Chess! Because we couldn't forget Chess. How much of an increase to your ego would it be if you were GW Olympic Gold Medalist in Chess. The ladies would be tailing you.

Halo 3 Event
Halo 3 Event, not sure what mode or if we'll be put into teams but get ready for some needler action (i have no idea what that is).

WC3 Event
WC3 is still played around GW in some corner of IRC, so a tournament was needed.

Olympic G&D Mapping Event
Can you become an Olympic G&D Mapping Gold Medalist? Damn right you can.
So let us know if you're interested in taking part in any of these activities. We'll properly take registrations for the events soon since this is just an interest topic.
If you want to suggest any other events you think would be cool, let us know.

i wouldn't be able to participate in much of these since i don't have a console or familiarity with most of these games, but i'd definitely be down for chess and soldat maybe speedrun as well (imo we should do starcraft instead of wc3 tho)

I could participate in the WC3 and Soldat events even though I am not Olympic level (especially in Soldat!).
Oh and the G&D mapping event, of course! And maybe if I can convince my friend to lend me SSBB then that, too!
p.s. That CoD4 screenshot looks like it was taken from the nonexistent PSP version of the game.

I play Warcraft 3 everyday, so I'm in for that. I didn't know anyone around here played it. I'm used to 2v2 AT, but I can switch to 1v1 if needed. Also sign me up for chess as well!!!

I'm totally down for the CoD4 (provided it's PC), speedrunning, SSBB, Soldat, netplay and possibly even the mapping.
The TF2...well I'm going to be running that (SSS style!), so I am obviously down for that. Depending on interest/availability, it'll likely be either 5v5 or 6v6, most likely CTF as it's the quickest and easiest to score (dustbowl is just too long, and nothing else is really that good for small teams).

Also what are we going to do about the multiplayer games? Have private servers running pirate versions or do we need to buy games just for this event that we already own for 360 :(

Heh, we can't have that, after all the only reason people pirate any video game that isn't some old or obscure collector's item like Panzer Dragoon Saga is that they are terrible people and deserve to be fucking shot in the street.... (just playing around with ya. ;d)
I dunno can't speak for other events but, TF2 requires you to have the actual game cause of Steam, Netplay will be using ROMs (as usual), and the same for the Speedrun most likely.

Can we do a game trivia contest? I think it would be cool (but if nobody else wants to do it then it's obviously not!).
I'm sure people here could come up with stuff that you wouldn't be able to find on Google and so on. Maybe even something like guess the screenshot or whatev. I used to run one on another site I was on and it always got a pretty big response.

That would be pretty bad, because as I said in the speedrunning thing, there's people who have played games like geometry wars TO DEATH and are always and forever going to be far superior to guys that don't have it yet

Well, there's the mapping event. I think it's better to go with mapping because it takes less time than to make a game and there was a game design competition pretty recently. Short game in one map could work though.
I'm definitely going to take part in Soldat and hoping to take part in some other events too. SSBB and maybe mapping, TF2 and speedrunning although I suck in TF2. :(
And Tetris if we get that.

Btw I have decided that the TF2 games will be with vanilla weapons only, none of the bullshit new ones.

I'm definitely in for Soldat, possibly for Brawl and TF2 (or CoD4 although I suck at it). I also suggest you add Go to the list! It's simple game and pretty much everyone can play it for free on any computer.

Yes conchfeld! Toribash is especially awesome because the new version (3.41) let's you host your own game servers!.

This is pretty buhdasss guys. I'd be interested in participating. Will there have to be prelims or would it be something that we can all participate in?
The ZSNES emulator has a multiplayer option for oldbie console games (like street fighters and tetris). Just a suggestion, although for tetris I bet there are far better options.

Continuing the Tetris Friend idea, it has a challenge mode where one person sets a high score and the other player has to reach it. Again, it looks like it's just on the Facebook version.
EDIT: Should probably mention there's either a 2 or 3 minute time limit for the challenges.

Hey Esh, I just smashed your challenge in Tetris btw. Also if you are going to use Tetris Friends you have to do Marathon mode High Score because the challenges are REALLY SHORT.

tetrinet. it's a multiplayer tetris client where basically everytime you clear lines it throws blocks onto the other player's fields in really fucking annoyingly jarring places. it's also got powerups and stuff but it's better if you turn those off

Sorry for everything taking a sudden slow down, I've been meaning to start the ol' Olympic Mapping since it'll last for a while, but I've had to keep pushing it back because of the 24 hour game challenge which has taken a week to actually start.
I'll take a look at that Tetris site, and I haven't ignored the Toribash ideas, that might as well happen.
The SFA3 tournament should be starting anytime soon, it's been a few days since the poll closed anyway.
THINGS will happen soon.
