Okay! The poll was ran and it seems people decided on choosing the Heatman Stage from Megaman 2.

Get practising, and we're ready to take your submissions over the next week. As soon as we get the submission and authenticate it, your score will be entered into the very sexy scoreboard. Obviously the top three scores at the end of the deadline (which is yet to be set) will win either a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal for their country. So make sure you give your nationality when submitting.

The following is entirely down to Dada, who's been the helping out a huge amount with this event (I have no idea when it comes to speedrunning and the rules and such, so I owe alot to him).

What we're going to do is make a speedrun recording with an emulator.1  What we need in order to do this is a special emulator and a ROM file.  Every participant must get exactly the same.

Since the chosen game is Mega Man 2, we'll need a NES emulator that allows for recordings to be made.  Go get it here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fceultra/fceux-2.0.2.win32.zip?download) (version 2.0.2).  The source code (http://fceux.com/web/htdocs/download.php) is available here, in case you're not on Windows and want to take a shot at compiling it (PM me if you need help).

The ROM we will be using is Mega Man 2 (U).nes.  No other version will do.  Keep in mind that we'll be playing on easy difficulty.

When I suggested this game, I also said that it would be best if we could play Heat Man's level with the weapons that you'd normally have when making a speedrun of the game.  That's why I've made a save state that brings you to the main menu after you've beaten Air Man, Quick Man, Flash Man, Metal Man and Bubble Man.  Download it here (http://tmp.thingmajig.org/Mega%20Man%202%20(U)%20Speedrun%20State.fcm).  Put it in the directory where you installed the emulator (e.g.  C:\fceux-2.0.2.win32).

Here's what you should do in order to record an attempt:

When everything is done, you should have several FM2 files.  These are the actual movies.  Make sure you create a backup of the one you want to send in! Clearly name it (e.g.  gw_speedrun_mm2_dada.fcm or something like that) and then e-mail or PM it to Esh.  Also, please don't post about how you did, as you might discourage others from making an attempt.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1: Normally, people simply record their play via VHS tape, but that's only necessary if you want to break an "official" record, so we won't go through the trouble.

Make sure to ask any questions if in doubt of anything.

Pick a non-traditional level from a Mario game, I say. World 2-3 (whatever that would be) from Mario 3, or Donut Plains 3 in Mario World!

Disclaimer: I have no idea what those levels are by memory.

a lot of emulators have an recording device built it so that probably wont be a problem, at worse we will need a special version of the emulator

I think Sonic or Super Mario World/Super Mario Bros 3 would be sweet.

I really can't comment on levels since the only level I've ever done anything worthwhile on was in Hitman Blood Money.

Some NES games might be cool because you can finish stuff like the original Zelda incredibly quickly.

Just make it something that most people would have or can easily acquire.

How about something from Contra 3.  Hmmm maybe not since I don't have a controller hooked up to my computer.  I'd say a non-traditional Mario level sounds good and I'd totally go for Mario 2-3 in Mario 3 since I'm a Mario 3 pro

Uh preferably if you're going to pick Megaman do like Megaman X or something, not some old piece of shit where megaman is like one foot tall

Actually I'm sure they're good games but I haven't played them and the speed run event should conform to what suits me =[[[

To defend Mega Man 2, it's quite a simple and straightforward game to play, which makes it perfect for a competition like this. There's no dashing involved, you can't charge your weapons and the enemies are relatively easy to beat. NES games in general are less frustrating than SNES games.

Not that it's very easy, but at the very least you won't have any problem learning how to play the game effectively.

Is this going to be decided by vote?  Does it need to be done on an emulator?  Are there ways of checking for TASing etc?  Will we be told what emulators are best for recording/etc or are we all expected to be experts in the art of speed runs?
Title: GW Olympics - Speedrun Event (Megaman 2 - Heatman Stage) [CLOSED]
Post by: dada on August 15, 2008, 06:08:46 pm
I see you are in need of answers.

Does it need to be done on an emulator?
Yes, unless you're able to get a digitized recording from a real console, but it's by far more convenient to just use an emulator.

Are there ways of checking for TASing etc?
To explain: a TAS is a so-called "tool-assisted speedrun".  Basically, a speedrun made with various "tools" inside the emulator to assist you, such as slowing down the game or using save states.  It's not possible to be 100% certain whether an emulator recording was made with such tools, since they always play back at regular speed.

There's no real way to check whether someone cheated using such tools. However, you can often recognize it, especially if you're knowledgeable on speedrunning and TAS techniques.

Will we be told what emulators are best for recording/etc or are we all expected to be experts in the art of speed runs?
I can tell you guys which emulator you should use as soon as the game has been decided on. There's virtually only one good recording emulator for every platform.

And yes, the game/level will be chosen by a poll.

When we get a better idea of what level to do, we'll set one up.

Out of this World (or Another World)

I guess it doesn't really have levels but you could do a speed run from one checkpoint to another.

Like how about from the time you are in the cage to when you have to roll around in the air ducts?

Man don't do this on sonic/mario/megaman. Stuff like that there is certain members around here that have practicised speedrunning them TO DEATH and it's probably going to be a pretty unfair contest, as nobody else will be remotely as good.

Do it on a totally obscure game that is so obscure nobody has played it, including me (therefore I can't suggest it)

Yeah exactly!  It makes getting a good speedrun take even longer.  When we did that one mario level last year or whatever it took FOREVER, and that was like 30 or 40 seconds long.

How about the Dark Water level from Ecco the Dolphin?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hejfMH4r41c
(starts at 2:07)

The boss is actually much harder than the player made it seem. You have to hit 4 of the same color globes without getting killed. Mind you:

- Hitting a globe of another color resets it.
- Waiting in place for longer than say.... a second will prompt an attack that kills you in 2 hits if you are at full health.
- While you're swimming up and down trying to time your attack right, your air will run out and you will drown.

Getting to the level requires password input that the video shows (under the title "Dark Water") and it's a sega genisis/ megadrive game.

Ecco has some other nasty levels without bosses.... I just thought this would be the most frustrating.

Not sure if it's that fitting for speedrunning since I don't remember much about it.

I just think the idea of something slightly more free might produce some cool results.

you know its really not that hard! this is fucking megaman, its retardedly simple! You can play it for an hour or two and then you have it memorized. I have it memorized and i've only been playing it for less than an hour! the greatest thing about heat man IMO is the appearing blocks sections. also the boss is retardedly easy you can beat him in like 20 seconds with just your buster, no hits taken.

Okay, basically what's typed in the main topic is from Dada since he's been helping me out with the event (as mentioned in the topic). I figured adding a scoreboard would increase competition and be more like the Olympics since that's what we're going for.

Btw are you somehow gonna get the PRECISE time from the EXACT start of the level to the death of heatman? Like is there a way? I know I have like 5+ seconds of shit that isn't even part of the run there like boss/stage intros and shit.
Yeah, I knew this was going to come up but we'll get up a proper score for the run.

Anyway, if noone wants the scoreboard then I'll take it down.

I sent you a PM about this, by the way.

I actually kind of like the scoreboard.  Maybe people will decide to make another attempt when their time has been beaten.

I said I wanted to do this, but I'm not too attracted by the idea of speedrunning MM2. For some reason. Mostly because I don't think I could do anything in it.

Maybe I'll join next round.... if there is one?

The part where you have to use the disappearing blocks to jump over walls near the end slows me down :(

also what points are considered the starting and ending time?

When the level starts and the boss dies. Don't worry about it, just record your run and we'll count the time.

Okay, so here is the updated scoreboard, DeadPhoenix sent in his run but it wasn't quite enough to throw Lazrael off the top spot. And even then, Lazrael has a fair amount of mistakes. Don't forget you can submit as many runs as you want (but only your highest score will be counted).

Keep them coming.

Hey, I'm just wondering, is it possible that the runs are, by the runners permission, given to other people in and out of the competition to see? Like I'm interested to see how others did some of the shit in the level, OR is like COMPROMISING SPEEDRUN SECRETS??

If yes then mine can be shown to whoever and I'm interested too see how DeadPhoenix performed ingame.

Well I won't be disallowing it, but then I won't be distributing them to other people. So if you want to go ahead and give/take from other contestants then it's down to you dawg.

Use the Item-2.  Create one right in front of the wall you need to cross, and then you can just jump right over it.

I'm nearly satisfied about my run.  Some of the parts where you need to use Item-2 (which, by the way, is called the ROCKET SLED) are pretty tricky, since they need to be positioned against the wall as closely as possible.  If you go too far, the Item-2 won't come into existence, and if you're not far enough, you'll use up too much fuel.

After 205 attempts I finally have a time I can be pleased about, but the run is still not perfect.

By the way here is a PRO TIP.  To prevent having to constantly make a new movie file, just press "save state" right after you start recording, then press "load state" in case you do something wrong.  It will bring you back to the beginning and erase what's happened, allowing you to try again.

How the hell does it count as tool existed? You're just basically restarting. You don't gain any benefit at all except not having to click 2 more times. I think you misread what he said or something. *_*

wow i actually didnt know we could do that! like, i just wasnt sure what would happen to the movie if we did that, but that's cool that it works that way, because I have been doing that for practice (needless to say I have the first section down pretty fucking well) but thats good that I dont have to be like "ok now im recording, must do it perfect..."

and yeah I have each section pretty much down but connecting them together I'm having some trouble with, aka mostly with changing weapons because the controller I have doesnt have a normal start/select buttons, they are on the size like XBOX black/white buttons, so it's just kind of weird!

Lazrael is now out of the medal standings, and everything just got dramatic.

Bobberticus improved on his score of 1:57:25 by a huge margin of almost 5 seconds to push him ontop of the competition, but Omcifer apparantly sensed this and managed to take three seconds off his original current gold score to reclaim the lead.

There are suddenly some serious medal contenders for this Sunday's scoreboard.

Actually, last time we held the competition (Raziel was the one running it back then, I think) it was judged that having a non-zero rerecord count was okay, as long as the save states were used at the beginning of the level.  People are kind of expected not to use it to cheat.  I would have put it in the lead, but I only just realized I forgot to mention it.

It's over.

In the final hours, DeadPhoenix, originally at the bottom of the table has made his way up to the Silver medal spot and has taken it from Harland. Omcifer has lost his Bronze medal position in the final moments.

The final scoreboard looks like this:

Contestant Run Time
Dada 1:38:38
DeadPhoenix 1:49:07
Harland 1:49:53
Omcifer 1:52:28
Bobberticus 1:53:13

Dada takes an expected Gold, DeadPhoenix somehow working his magic to get the Silver with Harland settling for the Bronze.

also I tried to have a go at a (very) tool assisted run moments ago just to see how that was, but I made some very obvious mistakes early on that I didn't bother to fix at the time (tedious as fuck, I don't know why anyone does these), resulting in not enough fuel for the last disappearing block part xD
