Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pxOzSpUXtg
IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0942385/

Has anybody seen Tropic Thunder yet? I went to see it last night, and it was pretty much the funniest movie I have seen all year. Before the movie started, there were three fake "trailers" that had the whole theater I was in howling with laughter. It's also one of the only comedies I have seen where the trailer doesn't give away all the laughs. Robert Downey Jr. was flawless playing a black man...I know the Academy doesn't usually give awards for comedic roles, but RDJ deserves an Oscar nomination, imo.

Anybody see it yet, or is thinking of seeing it? I highly recommend this movie.  :fogetlaugh: :fogetlaugh: :fogetlaugh: :fogetlaugh: out of five fogets

rdj deserves an oscar, but the public will think it's for the wrong reasons.  basically, in kirk lazarus' pursuit of the perfect character, he would take anything (in this case black skin and an entire cultural history) and just use them as tools.  that's what makes his performance so great.  it's how fucking insane kirk lazarus is in his pursuit of the perfect characters.

the stuff is often protested and again already being misunderstood by many protest groups but w/e.

basically this was the best comedy of the year.  put step brothers, pineapple express, harold and kumar, get smart and forgetting sarah marshall up against it and there's no contest.  i can't believe this movie actually came out of ben stiller's head.

The only reason to see this movie is Robert Downey Jr. Everything he said was hilarious. And it's good to see Tom Cruise in a roll that will knock him down a few pegs.

Cut up some GREENS.

This movie was a wonderful waste of time. I enjoyed it!

This was pretty much the first time in awhile I really enjoyed seeing a comedy in theaters.

i didn't realize that it was possible for this movie to be good based on the previews and on the fact that it had ben stiller in it

This was an amazing movie! Robert Downey Jr. was enough to make this hilarious, but Tom Cruise was really ridiculously funny and wasn't even in the trailers or anything! The fake trailers at the beginning, with Kirk Lazarus and Toby McGuire, was hysterical.

I liked Pineapple Express better.  This movie had its funny parts but for a comedy it was really slow and difficult to take it seriously as the transition between going up against actual armed drug dealers and the interaction between pansy ass actors was really jarring.  When the got blown up the entire theater was silent for like 5 seconds (I was the first one to laugh causing a slow progression of insane laughter) and that scene right there everyone was like THE SHIT HIT THE FAN but no, after that one scene no one got hurt and it turned into Three Stooges with a lot of cursing and more slapstick humor than one man can handle in 2 hours.

Good movie, mediocre pacing.

Eh, I didn't like this movie too much. I agree with Marcus, the humor was pretty lame(too many dick jokes, etc), and some actors took the spotlight more than others. Some of the scenes were hilarious, especially the ones with Robert Downey Jr., but others were just plain stupid. The part where Ben Stiller played the role of that for the drug dealers was pretty lame, and almost any scene with Jack Black was horrible.

The movie had it's high points, but a lot more low points in my opinion. I haven't seen Pineapple Express, hopefully it's better than this.

Yeah, there was absolutely nothing good about Black's character.  Everyone (even the nerdy skinny guy and Al Pacino) had a nice little back story or some sort of character development while Black's character was just some fat drug addict with a blank stare that talked real loud.  Maybe the whole point of his character was that he got famous off of fart jokes which explains his goofball attitude but it was brought up for maybe 5 seconds and then dropped.

EDIT: I will say I loved the deus ex machina at the end when the whole came full circle.

EDIT 2: I think it's also sad to note that the korean kid pretty much stole the show from everyone.  Kid was badass.

man i wish jack black would stop getting roles.  he is seriously one of the least funny comedians i have ever seen, and the fact that he really only does ONE THING, EVER doesn't help!

this movie looks possibly good but probably awful. i know respect was never what any of these people were aiming for, but i've got none for them anyway and i don't trust at all that the black guy and the handicapped movie parts will be any smarter than laughing at black stereotypes and people who are disabled. because they've stooped as low and lower than that in pretty much every one of their movies up to this point.

there's a small part of me wishing that this was stiller coming to some kind of revelation about what stupid assholes him and his buddies have been since this kind of comedy got started but i doubt it. i'll probably end up seeing at least some of it, anyway. so my mind is like an inch open for this to be funny and not just trash.

i mean somebody asked jack black and ben stiller about the protests and the best response they could come up with was a humourless  "well this is america and everybody has an opinion. that's what america is all about".

wait, what protests?

some people who were protesting against the use of the word retard. i mean i don't like it either but i can see how they COULD possibly use it well to show up hollywood but i doubt they will and even if they do their responses just seemed stupid and lame.

if you've seen the trailer it's the "don't go full retard" bit. they said that's the kind of thing kid will pick up on and use to insult disabled people. which is probably true.

Yeah, Ben Stiller playing a retarded character in one of his movies is a major plot point and Downey's character points out that he failed because he went "full retard" when all other mentally challenged characters in movies were simply slow or autistic.  I can totally imagine "Don't go full retard" becoming the next big High School catchphrase like "ALL RIGHTY THEN", "WHUZAAAAAAAAP", and Keanu Reeve's infamously stupid line "HIT ME"

EDIT: jack black's best role was that squirrely guy from The Jackal because Bruce Willis .

Yeah my thoughts... I was kind of hoping it would go INTO THE SHIT and everyone would get killed and it would end with all the actors dead.

also i didn't like the full circle thing, I thought it was a weird joke and thrown in pretty jarringly poorly at the end.

every scene with jack black was horrible and ben stiller was mostly pretty bad in the important scenes. he is like a real life zoolander.

I thought this movie was pretty funny but I think it would have benefited from NO JACK BLACK OR BEN STILLER and more intelligent writing in the screenplay. I can't believe no one mentioned

Speaking of Grossman and the Vietnamese drug lords, they were seriously the best "actors" in the film IMO.  If anyone is going to hand out an Oscar they better give it to that kid leader, the little boy, or the guy dressed as a woman.

I thought it was fantastic.

RDJ was amazing, as was Stiller.  I agree that Black was a little flat (but when is he not?), but all in all, it's a pretty damn good comedy.

Tom Cruise just rocked his douchebag performance.  I even liked McConoughey's character.  Everyone pretty much brought their A-game (extra points to Tobey Maguire for his hilarious cameo at the beginning) except Jack Black, but even he wasn't BAD.

Overall, it's not a movie that just makes me laugh out loud, but it's definitely a movie that I'd buy and watch more than once.

Gets a gold star from me.

I saw this earlier tonight and loved it. I didn't think it could possibly be as good as it was, but god damn it. I haven't liked a comedy that much in a long time.

Yeah, I thought it was funny. My favourite part was when Jack Black described how in one of his films they broke into the "hot girl camp" with a catapault made of underpants. I agree with everyone else in saying that as batshit crazy as Tom Cruise is, he is a pretty amazing actor.
