Title: What am I supposed to have seen?
Post by: pburn on August 17, 2008, 08:34:05 pm
I've seen a shitload of movies, but at the same time I haven't seen all the "basic shit". I only saw the Godfather trilogy and goodfellas a week ago. I've never seen Casablance and all that. I have a hard time getting into oldies because of the film grain but I loved The Apartment, Citizen Kane, whatever. However I couldn't watch (Orson Welles super version) of Touch of Evil or North by Northwest.

Whatever - just tell me what I'm supposed to see and I'll watch it. This applies to all movies from all periods and genres.

I've never seen any of those movies, ever.

but I suggest you watch stay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stay_(2005_film)) and bringing the dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringing_Out_the_Dead)

they're both mindfuck movies, although stay is more of a mindfuck/mystery I guess

EDIT: don't read the entire plot summary on stay because that will pretty much ruin the movie, it came out in 2005 and its got Ewan McGregor in it.

Quote
The movie opens with a car crash on Brooklyn Bridge, and introduces Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling), apparently a survivor of the crash, sitting next to a burning car on the bridge.

Psychiatrist Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) and his girlfriend Lila (Naomi Watts) are then introduced in a new scene. Sam discusses his patient, Henry, a college student and aspiring artist whom he describes as depressed and paranoid. Sometimes Henry hears voices, and he seems able to predict future events. Henry has told Sam that he will kill himself that Saturday at midnight, which Sam finds very troubling. Lila, an art teacher who has survived a past suicide attempt, offers to help to dissuade Henry from killing himself. But first they must find Henry.

It's also got alot of subtle connections to Shakespeare's Hamlet too, which is pretty interesting

wait maybe i misunderstood the topic.  is he asking for like MAINSTAYS OF FILM or just any random movie?  because i do not feel like stay was a modern classic or anything.

yeah it's very unclear but I'm going to assume its more geared towards masterpieces because you can't just make a topic saying "TELL ME ALL THE GOOD MOVIES EVER"

Shit anyone who knows shit about movies will assume you've seen. Y'know like 2001, Da Godfather, Goo Bad n' Uglee. I seen all dat shit but y'know i be lookin 4 dat n maybe y'know shit like there will be blood n' dark city that have had really critical acclaim. Really I dunno what i'm askin just shit i am supposed to have seen. I mean I already saw a shitload but you know there are still a shitload i havwne't seen.

exampelz:
I remember one time in school a kid who knows jack shit about movies was asking people if they saw Schindler's List, because apparently none of my shitty peers have seen it. He asked me and I said to myself "fuck". I saw it right after.

One time someone asked me if I say Braveheart. I said "fuck".

not saying this is a bad topic but instead of asking us there is probably like

a LIST somewhere (or several lists) of some of the more significant movies of the 20th century, and that'd probably be a pretty good place to start if you are looking for movies that are sort of like fundamental for anyone who is really into film, like the godfather and full metal jacket and whatever else.

yea a list would be tight but you know there is no way netflix can send me every movie on the TOP 1001 ESSENTIAL MOVIES LIST at a rate of 3 dvd's per week.

One time I watched movies off a top 10 list, that took me like 2 months.
Title: What am I supposed to have seen?

I took it as, "suggest me a good movie" which is what I did.

watch those movies faggot

seriously though I really doubt I've seen many "classic" movies so I'm just going to make suggestions of movies that I can remember really liking.

so wait what do you want, then?  i mean if ten movies took you two months to watch, this topic will take you quite a bit longer, probably!  i mean i can watch like 2-3 movies a day if i get really IN THE MOOD so i'm not sure what you're going for here if you're not actually in the mood to watch them.

No I am in the mood it's just that it's better for me to take recommendations in ABSOLUTELY MUST SEE first instead of nitpicking over 1001 movies. Also top 10 movies took me a long time because of netflix but I will try to download everything and all. I can watch up to 8 movies day so. Cept it takes forever to download movies off the zoo thanks to server change.

go to afi.com and look for the top 100 movies list.  that's pretty good for MAINSTAYS OF FILM or whatever, regardless of your opinion of the list itself

oh i see.  yeah netflix is bad for that kind of thing in a hurry, i think.  i would just torrent them all if i were you!  also roman's suggestion is probably good.  i was trying to think of a reputable place you could get a LIST of essentials and afi didn't even occur to me.

well, for foreign films just check out akira kurosawa movies (which I already know you do), michelangelo antonioni, frederico fellini, jean luc godard, and, i don't know, anything from the french new wave i guess.

Here, look these movies up:

La Dolce Vita (Frederico Fellini)
L'avventura (Michelangelo Antonioni)
Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard)

Also I'm not really sure if this would be considered a MAINSTAY OF FOREIGN FILM but go watch Il Posto, that one's really good.

edit: also Bicycle Thieves.

Ok I will, except like

Isn't Mad Max not on the AFI list. I haven't seen that yet. Neither is fucking Back to the Future which I haven't seen either.

Check out the nomination lists, not the final lists. The nomination lists have shitloads of movies. Of course they'll be all elitist and have like Citizen Kane on every final list but the nomination lists are decent. They're available on www.afi.org as well.

If you're looking for a list that would have Mad Max and stuff, check out the 100 Thrills and the 400 nominations for 100 Thrills among the AFI lists.

You should check out The Decalogue - it's a series of 10 short films (each around 45 minutes long) in Polish, with each film drawing inspiration from one of the 10 commandments. It's a masterpiece. (It's up in the Zoo as well)!

Another thing you could do is get a list of all the films that won the Oscar for best picture and then watch them all. Some people actually have this as a life goal.

And nominated for Best Picture, yeah, because Crash won that one year lol or watch those that won or got nominated for Best Screenplay (these are usually very good).

I never got what was so special about Casablanca, maybe im just too dumb to get it.

Like I read once in a magazine that it was gonna be aired on one of the weird free channels we have and I was like yeah its Casablanca everyone says its gr8 and then I watched it and... it was just... I don't know. It was really boring and afterwards I felt like I just wasted a few hours watching that shit.

EDIT:
If you're into westerns at all then besides all the Eastwood flicks theres also Once Upon A Time In The West which is really great, imo, and it has spawned its share of BEST MOVI EVAR opinions. I don't know how important movies westerns are considered but there you go, check it out if you haven't already.

I took a drama class where we basically watched a lot of the "basics" I guess.

These are the films I remember that I don't think has been mentioned yet: Psycho, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Graduate, Rain Man, It's a Wonderful Life, The Sting... that's about all I can remember that's not been mentioned yet.

I don't know too much about film and whatnot but the class pretty much centered around the classics. I remember watching Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and really liking that one, too. I guess that's just taste, though. I'm a sucker for sappy stuff sometimes =(

Also China Town. That's a good noir film.

yeah I've been meaning to catch up on the classics. I should really watch some bogart! people please start recommending some movies I (not psyburn) would like, thanks.

list of movies on my comp:
Blue Velvet
Breathless
City of God
Chinatown
Eraserhead
Fargo
Mulholland Drive
Tank Girl

Take It oR Leave It

Most of them are pretty important, I think I spotted all of them on a list of culturally significant movies or something. I did not appreciate Breathless beyond Jean Seberg and her v short hair, but the rest are good and relatively important. I don't feel like writing about each of them, ask if you want a GWer opinion of any of the films.

Breathless pretty much started, or at least helped start the French New Wave, which in turn influenced the early American independent film makers.  Breathless also broke a lot of rules and set a standard of filming that a lot of movies followed.  As cliche as it is now, the jump cut was a crazy and I guess REVOLUTIONARY technique that was introduced in Breathless.  Breathless is a very significant movie, guys!

Just so you know.

Add these 2 to your list if you haven't seen them yet:

Memento - Amazing film, awesome execution, and really mind-bending.
TRON - One of the first films to use CGI extensively. It may not be the best film ever, but it is iconic and pretty memorable.

I will second Vertigo from Jetson's list, Jimmy Stewart was never so creepy and I feel its Hitchcock's strongest film.  Best soundtrack of his films as well in my opinion.

The Third Man is also a great flick.  It is black and white but its a beautiful film for black and white.  Shot in postwar Vienna the photographers did a great job of capturing the city and making it a solid part of the tale.

Some films I did not see on anyone's list but highly recommend:

Lone Star (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116905/) by John Sayles is another must watch.  It's probably John Sayles' magnum opus in both screenwriting and directing.  Lone Star like many of John Sayles' films is a tale about a community told through the lives of individual characters in that community.  Wrapped up in this exquisite narrative is a murder mystery, a tale of unrequited and forbidden love, the search for identity as a people and as an individual, and ultimately a man's conflict with his father.  All of it is brought together beautifully in a very powerful statement in the film's conclusion.  Yes all of that is vague, but trust me the film is brilliant.

Another one is a recent film that I think may be the best film of the 21st century so far.  The Last King of Scotland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455590/) directed by Kevin MacDonald is about a young Scottish doctor who runs off to Africa to get away from his parents and for other idealistic reasons.  He becomes involved with Uganda's strongman ruler Idi Amin by treating his hand in the village, and is soon ensnared into his organization by the force of his personality.  Idi Amin is played by Forest Whitaker who was absolutely deserving of the Oscar he earned for this role.  Its a tale of tyranny and mistrust of the vein of another classic Scottish Play, Macbeth.  Idi becomes increasingly violent, paranoid, and controlling as the yoke around his rule tightens.  I highly recommend this film.

The Battle of Algiers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058946/) is a film by Gillo Pontecorvo about the violent civil war in Algiers that pitted its French colonizers against the general arabic and islamic natives.  Set in the city of Algiers the film follows several different narratives including the viewpoints of terror cell leaders, french security officers, and the French Colonel that comes in to establish martial law.  The film is forty years old, but has stunning commonalities with Today's struggles with Terrorism.  Cent Com actually screened this film as a discussion starter for dealing with Terrorism after 9/11.  It has a lot to say on the matter without being a dry documentary.

King Kong 2005 is great. Not as great as the original but I don't see why you wouldn't like it. It's pretty inspirational CG-wise and was really well shot. Naomi Watt's is smokin hot and it's KING KONG.

I'm also interested in this but in terms of crap I can actually find at tag sales and clearance racks in video stores etc

nobody would ever have City of God to be honest, and if they did they wouldn't be selling it

Edit: Maybe I should just check out the LIBARY but I hate having to plan out that sort of thing

not everyone, but I'm just saying a lot of people are coming here and suggesting films that aren't really films that you NEED to see, but films that they like. Doesn't really seem to be the purpose of the topic.
yeah but like...

deciding what films need to be seen is still opinion... there's no movie you need to see, just movies that there is a universal opinion of it being a great movie to watch.

If you still haven't seen casablanca yet, I'd definitely reccomend it. One of the only black and white movies that I didn't feel like falling asleep while watching, alongside "Night of the Living Dead". Humphrey Bogart did an incredible job with his character, and the way the plot develops is interesting, unlike the long drawn out time wasting scenes that are in just about every other "classic" black and white film.
