Title: Video Game Soundtracks
Post by: Sine on August 20, 2008, 01:17:42 am
This is the topic to list and also talk about your favorite video game soundtracks.

My favorite soundtrack is easily FF6's... it was very consistent and there were very few bad tracks. Another good one is Wild ARMs 3's soundtrack, which had quite a few amazing tracks (especially Long Days of Rest). Other soundtracks i like include the FFs (up to FFX), Chrono Cross, and Star Ocean 2 (mainly just Rena's theme).

I quite liked the Chrono Cross soundtrack...other than that one I can't think of any that really stood out for me.

i think most videogames actually have pretty good music. it's usually the best thing about a game. the only thing is that it's designed to repeat and play in the background a lot of the time so not a lot of it is worth listening to more than a couple of times cos it gets boring and stale pretty quickly but still i put the vg soundtracks on my ipod and i listen to them when i'm walking around or at work sometimes.

usually there are only 5 or 6 out of 80 or so songs i like but that's still pretty good. i just put those ones on and delete the rest. the ones i've liked the most are probably EHHHHHHHHHHHH deus ex, killer7, final fantasy (just pretty much all of them have some good songs), breath of fire (3, 4 and DQ have some great songs especially DQ) uhhhhhhhh elder scrolls is all right in a cheesey way but i like cheesey just fine, silent hill when it isn't trying to be scary.

yeah there's lots more i've listened to outwith the game but i mean it's all the same kind of stuff apart from deus ex and killer7. i don't listen to it that much and actually i've tried to phase it out of my ipod cos since it's BG music it's easy to get into a habit of sticking it on shuffle and never listening to any real world music. it gets really stale quickly, too.

i'd probably point to it as the single best creative accomplishment to ever come out of the entire history of vidiot games

Music makes or breaks a game for me. It doesn't really matter what type... it just has to work within the context of the game.

These are just a few that stuck out as I was in here.

Earthbound had the only music that means anything to me

and Metal Gear Solid 2 has some good jungle

Edit: I really need to hear Chaos Theory too - does it matter if I haven't played the game because Splinter Cell really doesn't interest me

I always liked the music in the Phoenix Wright series. It always seemed to fit with the whole LAW AND ORDER theme. I actually recently got my hands on the orchestrated soundtrack of the Ace Attorney series, it's pretty nice.

I also really liked the Starcraft soundtrack. The Terran theme kicks ass.

uhh and pokemon tends to have catchy music

I like most RPG soundtracks, but the ones that I like much more than the others are the Wild Arms soundtracks. Yeah, I really enjoy Michiko Naruke's music since she did most of it for the series. Just listening to the opening theme of the first WA is great.

Earthbound also had really good music. It really sets the mood of the game for you.

I'm a sucker for game music and I try to keep up with the good soundtracks as much as I can. I'll mention a couple here that I didn't see mentioned (I might not have been looking close enough) cos I agree with most of the others posted up:

Heroes of Might and Magic Series - Regardless of what you think of the games they have pretty fantastic music. I think my favourite soundtrack is from the third game but I like most of it. The heavy, driving drums mixed with the movie-like strings are really cool. In general the music is just of a very high quality and adds an air of prestige to the game.

Fallout Series - Ignoring that Fallout 2 has a very similar soundtrack to the first I think these are worth mentioning. Mark Morgan did wonderful things in the sense that these tracks are so ambient and sparse yet they still stick in your head and provide so much atmosphere. Perhaps not the best stuff for listening on its own, but in the game environment it's basically perfect. He's moved on to TV shows like One Tree Hill so I'm guessing he's not going to be taking part in the third Fallout which is a shame!

I may be alone but I think the FFIX soundtrack is probably one of the best achievements in Nobuo's catalogue.

Pretty much all of my favorite VG soundtracks are from RPGs. Some of my favorites are Suikoden soundtracks (especially 2 and 3, also Celtic is awesome but not an OST) and Wild Arms (duh, who doesn't love WA OST). I also like Grandia's and pretty much all of Final Fantasy sound tracks. Some non-RPGs I like are especially MGS series.

Yeah chainer nice one on that Tristram track,
lassekongo83: why not Electricity from Sim city 4 that one had to be the best out of the game.

also yeah pretty much anything Sqaure / Ensemble studios ( age of empires ) or Jeremy Soule.

EDIT: Commandos 2: Men of Courage, the whole Soundtrack was great --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-bJCXCGhCo&feature=related , first minute is slow

Ps: OCremix has a new DooM II album up!

Let's try top 5 video game soundtracks!

5. Chrono Trigger
While I'm not a huge fan of the game like everyone else seems to be, I absolutely love the music in Chrono Trigger. Especially Zeal's theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QufOb0e6Mns) is awesome.

4. The Adventures of Alundra
Alundra is one of the lesser known action-RPGs, which also means it's music is not that well known. But it does kick serious ass! Check out "The Shrine of the Lake" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW4J7VF4c0Q&feature=related) for some awesomeness.

3. Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country not only had awesome gameplay and graphics, it also had superb music. I really liked the swimming level music: "Aquatic Ambience" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D65TT5Ieb4M).

2. Terranigma
Terranigma was never released in the US so some of you might not have the pleasure of seeing and hearing this masterpiece. Lots and lots of great music in this one. The overworld theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAw3lOoA7yQ) is very very majestic!

1. Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
Castlevania games have had excellent music through out it's whole history. Even the crappy 3D games had excellent music. For some reason Castlevania always seems to be forgotten when it comes to video game music even though the games feature some of the best video game music ever. Out of all the Castlevania games Rondo of Blood has the best soundtrack of them of all. Recently it got remade for PSP as Dracula X Chronicles meaning the music also got quite a bit better in quality! Awesome. Dracula X Chronicles soundtrack has pretty much all essential Castlevania tracks minus Iron Blue Intention.

Divine Bloodlines (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e70CnAVXPw)

Vampire Killer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-azpF5LfuQ)

Bloody Tears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnB25KVyynA)

extra: Iron Blue Intention (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4Nw--_-N0g) (Portrait of Ruin version. Also featured in the Mega Drive/Genesis title Bloodlines)

I love the Dragon Quest soundtracks though, especially when performed by a live orchestra (the London philharmonic has some great recordings).

The NES Mega Man games had pretty sweet music, too.  I don't know who wrote it though.

Final Fantasy games are of course a sure bet usually.

The Japanese-only PS2 game Moonlit Shadow had a really cool soundtrack.  Some of it was written by Yasunori Mitsuda (this is how I heard of it) but most of the good stuff was written by some guy named Miki Hagashino I think.  The music was either hardcore Jazz or some sort of urban hip-hop and it's just way too cool.

Also Romancing SaGa for PS2 had tons of ridiculously cool music.  I think it's too bad that it doesn't get much attention.

Aaaaaaaaaaand Unlimited SaGa for PS2 has amazing music.  It is one of the worst games I've ever played and for some reason none of the good tracks get played very often in the game so you'd never notice how amazing the music is, but the OST is a treat.

Broken Sword series has great music written by Baritone Pheloung. He's the same guy who wrote the music for inspector morse. The music is not so thematic like many other video game music, but it has a unique timbre and colour to it that is very rare to hear in all manner of soundtracks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FOFc9RXICU

This is the closest I could do find to some of the music from the game. It's just the introduction movie, but has a lot of music in it

Opoona.

with dreamcast looking graphics, a great battle system and a refreshing story, Opoona's best quality would definetly be it's soundtrack. blending a synthy sound along with realistic instruments, it has a truly original sound. I had a hard time deciding what game had the coolest music, but now I don't.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKgoegkociY&fmt=18

unfortnetly, this is the only video on youtube thats just the music from Opoona. the game never had an officially released soundtrack, which is very sad because this game has one of the best soundtracks ever.

It was done by Amon Tobin (and is pretty good--one of the reasons why I bought the game when it was cheap).

I'd also say killer7. I actually own a physical copy of it because it rules and I'm a dork. Best tracks: Rave On, Shoot Speed, Dissociative Identity, Reenact, Electronical Parade, Heroic Deeds, Blackburn (and many others).

I've probably chosen the more "gimmicky" tracks (compared to the rest of the OST) but the whole thing is good.

Fallout 1 & 2. I think these soundtracks are the sole reason I am so interested in composing for soundtracks today. I think these MADE the game and for the life of me I don't know why they decided to chuck out Mark Morgan and replace him with INON ZUR for fallout tactics and fallout 3, I don't think it's going to be the same without him.

A lot of great memories growing up with this game. Even during the PSone era I would take out the old SNES and play through Chrono Trigger again and again. The whole lead up to the Magus fight (and then the fight itself) was my favorite part of the game, frankly.

Personally, I enjoy the music from most games. Specifically the Kingdom Hearts games (All 3 that are out), the Tales Of - gaes and the Dark Cloud games.

But my favourite has to be Risky Woods on teh snes and sega. Mega hard game, but has music that got stuck constantly in my head for ages.

Just like Mortal Comboink, f***ing TF2!

The best intro to a video game ever is this:

No longer do you see "Westwood Studios".... "proudly presents" in a command and conquer

and do you know why? Cause since EA took over it's been totally shit! And if they release a shit RA3 then they can kiss my custom goodbye.

RA2 was the last good RTS, I have yet to play one that is as good since.

It's awful, I obsess over video game soundtracks. I used to have every Final Fantasy soundtrack EVER as well as all the other stuff that goes along with them, remixes and arrangements and piano collections and I loved every bit of it. I download sheet music to songs from games Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts, Maplestory (lolz), Zelda games (Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time esp.), Shadow of the Colossus, and the Final Fantasy series (specifically like IV, VI, VII, and VIII). But pretty much all of them I listen to all the time. They're on my iPod (I'm a loser I know) and recently I've REALLY been into the Shadow of the Colossus soundtrack. There are pieces that I just absolutely love. I dunno, I'm a huge fan of video game music and I pretty much just always have been. I'm listening to Chrono Cross right now actually... huh.

My favorite video game soundtracks are definitely Vagrant Story and Okami.  I think they're both awesome, and they're great games too.

The track is called Hell March in the RA opening theme. They are recording a new one for RA3 :D

Pretty much anything by Yasunori Matsuda (Chrono series, first two Shadow Hearts) and Motoi Sakuraba (Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Tales of)

I think Silent Hill had my favorite music. It ranged from kind of upbeat and melodic to really heavy and dangerous sounding. It always fit the mood and made up for some of the game's shortcomings.

There are plenty of games I enjoyed for music. However there is only one game that will always stand tall among the crowd:
Shadow of the Colossus.

I have always been taken away by the immense beauty of the Terranigma Underworld song. The sorrow mixed with a determine feel really puts me to tears.

No song has ever been able to take me as this song. Not even the MGS theme.

hahahahaha

Dude what's your problem?  Maybe it's not like your favorite music in the world or whatever but if he wants to be profoundly stirred by video game music it's kind of assinine to pick on him.

I dunno I just read the whole paragraph before and I was imagining something a lot better than that

but yeah I loved the tunes from the Dragon Warrior games when I was like 6 or something - I wouldn't bother posting but apparently there is a large group of people who cover songs from the game on guitar (and do an awesome job of it)

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjfKP5c31xE&feature=related

so here's the one from DWII that I thought was like the best song ever

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Cuedjtiiw&feature=related

and the one from DWIV was kind of the same idea

and that Other World theme from Chrono Cross is pretty nice although it gets mentioned way too much. It always feels kind of unfinished to me though

Actually the composer's arrangements for full orchestra are some of my favorite music in the world.  You should check them out if you liked the in-game music back when you were a kid - he is a really phenomenal composer and orchestrator.  It helps that he was like in his 50s and had decades of experience writing for film before he even started writing music for video games!

Yeah but ironically I think as the games get newer and they actually have the ability to do better sounding instruments/mp3s of the orchestra version I think the music itself has gotten duller

it's actually pretty cool how the NES ones don't sound so completely abstract compared to the orchestrated versions of the songs, not only that they were just working with square/triangle waves but they effectively only have 3 tracks to work with at any given time

Lets see...

ShadowRunSNEandGenesis: What can I say, urban apocalypse and cyber-punk techno at it's best. The Renraku Archology is still one of my personal favorites, same with Jackal's Lantern.

Silent Hill series always seems to deliver in the abstract/eerie/depressing song department.

Earthworm Jim1&2 'nuff said.

Yakuza's fighting songs actually were good. They even made an extremely common "action" tune people sing to themselves in 'do's badass.

Banjo Kazooie/Tooie "very few" songs are actually addicting. I say very few sarcastically because ten songs is one song played differently for different areas.

Kirby 64 it's addicitng too I just can't get enough of Mircale Matter and the ending credit's tune. Some are crap but thats expected.

Y's I liked it.

Castlevania songs from various games in the series.

The Resident Evil piano tune I hear from almost every game.

Hybrid Heaven boss music.

Dark Cloud cause well for starters their main theme is so good that it's even in a certain boss fight in Dark Cloud 2.

Dark Cloud 2 I find it musically less superior but thats me.

Last and hopefully the least... Dr.Mario Fever and Tetris

I'd list more but the other ones are listed by others.

Ogre Battle's soundtrack will always stand out to me. I just love those heavy war-like symphonies. Chrono Cross, Baten Kaitos, and Breath of Fire 3 also have some really fantastic soundtracks.

However, Morrowind is my absolute favourite. It is simply.... epic sounding.

Kirby has some really great and catchy tunes, particularly the remixes featured in Kirby Canvas Curse:
Butter Building (this is the best I could find, at least it has two remixes) -  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4-MIGE7LzZE&feature=related#

Blue Dragon has some great tracks, though it doesn't live up to Nobuo Uematsu's other efforts:
Main Theme - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo-uNoCxV8I

The Dark Cloud series features cool music, but I can't remember much of the tracks. This track is one that I've always enjoyed listening too:
Gundorada Workshop - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GxPjnzsBIrc

The Silent Hill has some very creepy and atmospheric tracks. I love how they included some of the series' tracks in the film:
Block Mind (couldn't find the track I was looking for) - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SXsbCg2y76c&feature=related

Valkyrie Profile 2 had great music considering the fact that the composer was Motoi Sakuraba. He should stop composing generic music found in the Tales series and compose better music found in the Valkyrie Profile series. Unfortunately there are a few generic tracks, like the annoying track which plays in the Venerated Dragon Palace. Anyway, here's a track I really like:
Divine View (world map theme) - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gCr_1xxKt68

Whoever said Wild ARMs is dead right. Only the first game, mind you; even the Alter Code F soundtrack pales in comparison. Wild ARMs 1 has the most amazing soundtrack for a game I've ever heard and it's the only one I can listen to in full in one session; without skipping tracks or parts of tracks or w/e.

You know the soundtrack of Mario Bros. The one that goes ting ting ting ting ting or something similar to that. That must be the best one ever created. I even have it as a ringtone in my mobile. Call me and that ringtone plays :D

I have to wonder why several years after their initial release, people are still blowing up off of Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger/Cross music.  Sure, some of it's great, but there are so many other good soundtracks out there--you just have to look beyond level 1 Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda material.  I'm not saying that they're bad, they're certainly very talented and I enjoy a lot of their work (although, none of the recent stuff is particularly stellar), but it seems odd that all of these VGM fans only listen to what is readily available and I usually see a lot of the same stuff (o man one winged angeL!!! NOBUOU IS GOD)

Anyway, here are some notable composers that I enjoy:

Masashi Hamauzu (SaGa series, Dirge of Cerberus, FFX, Musashi Samurai Legend)

Yasuhisa Watanabe (Senko no Ronde, Border Down)

Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest series)

Norihiko Hibino (His recent release "The Outer Rim". I like his style when he fuses jazz and other styles, but I don't care for most of the MGS music)

Tamayo Kawamoto (RayStorm and other SHMUP soundtracks, she has a very unorthodox style and does mostly electronic-sounding material)

Eriko "Guts" Imura (Klonoa soundtracks, Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil to be specific)

Shoji Meguro (Shin Megami Tensei series)

Junya Nakano (Dewprism, FFX, Another Mind)

Akari Kaida & Yoshino Aoki (Their work on Breath of Fire III was great)

Honorable mentions: Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill), Jun Chiki Chikuma (Bomberman Hero, SNES Bomberman games), Tim Follin (Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future), Yasunori Mitsuda's "Moonlit Shadow" soundtrack, the Namco sound team that worked on Ridge Racer Type 4, Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) and Capcom's Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact soundtrack for having an assortment of catchy tunes.
