Title: Lookin for a good DS RPG
Post by: JustRob on August 22, 2008, 03:24:21 pm
Yeah I need a good RPG for the NDS. Good story and characters and turn based battle system or variations.

Anyone know a good one?

I'd say FFIII and FFIV would be pretty obvioud choices. Other than that, if you like Stragtegy RPG's, or TBS' in general then try Luminous Arc, or Luminous Arc 2 when its released.

Wait for Chrono Trigger to come out.

The EU release is due begin 2009, so that's gonna be a while

I'll try out FF, thanks.

You should just wait for Suikoden Tierkreis next year.

Luminous Arc is pretty dull, whoever said that. Uh, FF4 is pretty good, and I enjoyed Magical Starsign, too. The Mana games aren't too bad. Nothing overly special, but fun enough.

Also Lunar Knights is pretty good, albeit a little OUT THERE, but good luck finding it. It's hard to find here in Australia, but then against most games that aren't MAINSTREAM SHIT are.

No! Don't touch FFIII if you get frustrated easily! Sure it is decent but you cannot save in dungeons!!!!! This would not be a problem if the game was not frustratingly hard because the random encounters which happen every 3 steps will kill you! If you are into challenge, then buy it but you WILL get pissed off from time to time. Everything else in the quote is fine and like what EvilDemonCreature said, wait for Chrono Trigger as well.

I've never played any DS games, so I really have no room to talk, but if Lunar Knights is anything like the other Boktai games (which were on GBA), then I'll bet it's good.

[Of course, it would be best to listen to the people who have actually played DS RPGs before.]

Yeah it is actually Boktai 3 in Japan.  The name was changed because they decided it would be better NOT to associate the game with the failed Boktai franchise!  (so yes it is probably very similar)

If you want traditional JRPG go for Summon Night: Twin Ages, it's pretty rubbish but it occupied me for a while.

I know you said good story, but Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 has a very solid battle system, and won't disappoint you if you just want to get some portable, turn based RPG action going.

the opening monologue of The World Ends With You is, quite possibly, arguably one of the most impressive opening sequences of any DS videogame in the last 10 financial quarters. i don't play PAL versions of games when i can avoid it and thankfully the DS is region free so i will post my own translation from the original japanese here. it may differ from the english version but i think it is perchance the superior version by virtue of it being fanslated as opposed to done by soulless american corporations.

I second FFIV and FFTA2. Totally worth it. The new cinematic story telling of FFIV gives the plot some impact, rather than a bunch of crappy sprites turning around to personify movement or interaction. I guess they blinked a few times back then. (Nothing against FFIV, but this remake is golden).
I especially like Namingway, and I was sceptic when I first met him. The more you see him, the funnier he is.

since the ds plays advanced games, if you haven't already you need to look into Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
seriously amazing games, and they aren't ports or remakes or sequels to a longstanding franchise.
i have yet to meet anyone who didn't love those games

The World Ends With You is a good one to try out.  It might be beyond what you're asking since it's battle system isn't turn based.

the world ends with you is really complex in its battle system towards the end.
you have to be able to simultaneously focus on both screens, and control each character seperately without losing track of the other one. it's a fantastic game but it's something you have to be ready for
