Title: Gintama
Post by: Kitsune Inferno on August 23, 2008, 10:17:19 am
I searched to see if there was already a topic on this anime, and I couldn't find one so...

I've been following this anime recently and watched up to episode 25. I must say it is probably the second best anime show in existance. I absolutely love the humor, and even though it was only filler, episode 25 has the single greatest fight sequence in the history of history.

Sample episode of the epicness. Discuss now.

Ahaha, that's the one where they parodied Death Note wasn't it?

But yeah, Gintama is amazing. lol

Yeah, and Naruto was parodied a little, but the main thing was the beef pot. :)

I've seen the first 5-10 eps and I didn't think it was too great. I hear everyone praises it, so either I just don't like it (and I usually agree with the majority on series like this), or it actually gets a lot better.

It really does. The first few episodes I don't like nearly as much as the epic ones (18, 24, 25, 27, to name a few)

Yeah, I made a topic about Gintama before but nobody seemed terribly interested. Personally, I love Gintama.

Considering that the only other anime that I bother to watch these days is One Piece, I think that reflects very well on Gintama.

Same here. For me:

One Piece > Gintama >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> most other anime >>>>> steaming pile of shit >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Naruto >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Naruto Shitpuuden

I need to watch more of it. I loved the Mr. 5 reference in the episode I just finished watching (The one where Isao believes he is going to die today because of his horoscope)

DragonBleaPiece ftw. Watching that scene on YouTube was the first time I heard of Gintama, and what made me fall in love with the show.

By the way, I just realized that in that scene they are parodying the Alubarna battle. -_- I thought they were just fighting randomly. :p

Oh crap, I just realized that the guy dressed as the Soul Reaper, Crocodile, and Cell is actually Isao o_O

I guess I should give another chance then.

It doesn't look good to me. Of course the only anime that I find funny constantly is Cromartie High School.

i have seen the first few eps and it was average at best.

but maybe i'll watch more

I didn't like Cromartie. The English dub seemed to rely on shock humor and the like, but that's just me.

The first episodes weren't even that good. They were actually kind of confusing because they take place AFTER the later episodes, so you're being introduced to all these characters at once and you just.... Have no idea what the fuck is going on.

Like Ayame.. I don't think she is actually "introduced" until somewhere around episode 20?

Yeah the earlier episodes aren't the best. I remember finding the first two episodes really boring.

Gintama really exercises its potential during the serious arcs. The Benzakorou arc or whatever (around episode 60) was really awesome and action packed.

I absolutely love Gintama humour, but I'd love to see more arcs like that. From what I understand, two more are on the way. One of them being the introduction of who happens to be, from what I understand,

I haven't gotten that far so the best action I've seen was the conclusion of the Amnesia arc when Gintoki smashes the cannon into bits.

Also, for some reason, Wikipedia shows up to 125 episodes on the episode guide, but then stops, as if the series ends there. Does that mean Gintama's ending at 125 (they are at 120 at the moment) or just Wikipedia's really shitty template?
Title: Gintama
Post by: DS on August 28, 2008, 12:31:13 pm
It probably means that there are no episode titles out beyond 125.

But, they don't even have episode titles for them. I'm guessing it's just a sloppy template.

Yeah, Gintama is still going. Pretty certain the manga is too.

Gintama's Wikipedia entry isn't really too good anyway, so yeah.

Yeah, the manga is, but I'm noly at 40 in episodes so I dunno. Also, I heard that after a certain episode number, there are no subs available at this point. Is that true, or what?

Post by: UPRC on August 29, 2008, 04:03:40 pm
The subs are up to about episode 73 or so.

Oh, that sucks, nobody is subbing the series anymore?

I've seen up to 25 now, and I still don't see what's so great about this. I think it's funny and all that, but it's still pretty average in my books. There are a couple of eps that I really liked, but most of them I barely even chuckle at.

No. Rumbel is still subbing and another group has picked it up from 72 or 73 on, so there are two active subbing groups now.

Just watched the.. I think 69-71 arc. Pretty good "serious" arc. I love seeing people get stabbed.

Anyway, I think that another one starts soon. Episode 76 or something. Here's hoping! It seems that the "serious" arcs are becoming more frequent, but Gintama is still at it's core a goofy, not so serious series.

I wonder how Gintama will eventually end up? It will have something to do with the will of the samurai or something. Probably a showdown between Gintoki and above the Terminal Tower or whatever the hell it's called again.

In fact, I'll call the end of Gintama right here and now.

I'll bet money on it. I will fucking BET MONEY ON IT.

i just started watching this anime and it's pretty cool. at first, i avoided watching it because i didn't want to experience (for those of you who know about it) hitman reborn daily life arc all over again. i hated that shit. it was just terribly bad and everything was just so annoying. fortunately, gintama is bearable because it actually manages to make me laugh every once in a while.

my favorite episode atm is probably the death note parody one (ep 25).

Gintama is probably my favorite comedy anime (not that there are all that many good comedic animes available).
Alright, I haven't read any of this thread except for the posts up to here, but i watched it and wow. apparently you guys have different standards for anime and rpg maker games, because if somebody made a rpg maker game where you fought Cell (i mean, man dressed up like cell), Crocodile, bleach guy #12, and Axe hand Morgan, where the comedy is apparently derived from the fact that its "LOL CAMEOS oh and did we mention one of the characters is a whaaaacky creature???? probably with a funny quacky voice????XDDDD" you would tell them it's a piece of shit they should work a little harder at it.
Why then, is THIS acceptable?

EDIT: This looks like the "____ Movie"s of anime.

It was only one episode.

I watched one of the "serious arc" episodes a while back (can't remember the episode) and found it quite funny. It was probably a break from all the fighting since Gintoki, the Shinsengumi boss and two bad guys were stuck in the same public restroom due to the lack of toilet paper (the only toilet humour I've actually found funny in a long time). They even thought about using sandpaper as a substitute.

By the way Tatsujinken, I heard that the daily life arc in Reborn! is actually funnier in the manga. I've read some chapters of it and it does seem that way.

You are right this is the best anime. I really feel the seriousness of the episode, just from your description. Must be pretty intense to watch that  :fogetgasp:

(ps: that humor sounds so great "Hmm there is no toilet paper. Oh hello greatest foe you are out of toilet paper too? Let's use..... SAND PAPER!!!! :fogetlaugh: :fogetlaugh: :fogetlaugh:"

but wait if it doesnt have toilet paper....where will we get sandpaper???? :fogetmmh: :fogetmmh:)

There is a difference between parodies done right and parodies done wrong, Rajew. The OP/Bleach/DBZ parody bit was only about a minute long. Sort of compared to the type of humor commonly found it Family Guy. (Like I said, this was only one episode.)

Also, Ohlichris is talking about two totally different episodes.

I've been watching this more (I'm at ep 45 or so now), and I'm starting to like it more and more. It was really really average before like ep 25 or so, but I think it started to pick up from there (that or I just didn't appreciate the humor until then). It's still not that awesome, but now I definitely think it's worth a watch.

I'm only at 43-ish, and I really liked the Kagura arc since it was halfway serious. (Except Isao dressing up as the Amanto mother)

I read the first couple of chapters, it was ok. Is it funnier watching it than reading it?

I personally find watching more enjoyable than reading, but it all boils down to personal taste.
