Okay, so I'm not good with introductions, so here's the thing. This topic is for local bands and smaller bands, etc. Bands that a lot of people won't already have an established viewpoint on because they haven't been around long enough/don't have a lot of media presence. They can be good, they can be awful, but if you heard a band not many people have heard of, put your review here. I'll start.
Faux Fox (http://www.myspace.com/fisforfaux)
My Rating? 8/10
What do you get when you take somebody who's completely crazy, give him an intense passion for electronic New Wave music, and the vocal ability to make it work? You get George Quarts (known as Brian by his family, except his nephews who call him Bob), the lead singer of Faux Fox. They're good, what more can I say? If you like New Wave, give them a chance. If you see them live, be careful if you're in the front row (when I went to see them a guy got his drink spilled by the lead singer).
Kessler (http://www.myspace.com/kesslerband)
My Rating? 6/10
Okay, so they're alternative rock. Okay, they're kinda generic. Okay, blah blah blah fuck you I like it. I know you probably hear a lot of that in this forum, but you know what? Sometimes you want to listen to something fun and happy, and Kessler is fun and happy. They're shows are really full of energy too, if that counts. You can tell they're having fun, and that's all that matters, right?
Mount Righteous (http://www.myspace.com/mountrighteous)
My Rating? 0/10
Okay, maybe not. So these guys seem to be having fun too (except the second trombone), but they seem to have forgotten a basic rule: no good music comes out of Grapevine, Texas. I saw these guys when I went to see Faux Fox, and when I heard they were an 11 piece band, I thought they would either be pretty cool or dreadfully awful. I'll just say by the end of the first song I was sitting down. They had to clear out an area on the floor because there was no room on the stage. They had ZERO electronics (which normally wouldn't be a big deal but they compensate for that by YELLING INTO THE MIC) Their fans are more about doing the charleston and STOMPING ON MY TOES than anything else, it seems like they can't hear the band in front of them raping the entire room's ears. Okay, so it seems I have more to say about what I hate than what I like, so I'll rap it up: If you're in north texas and you hear about mount righteous anywhere near you, run. If somehow they break out of north texas and you hear about mount righteous coming anywhere near you, run.
NOTE: THERE ARE NO GOOD VIDEOS OF THEM, BUT THERE'S A COUPLE OF THEM FROM THE SHOW I WAS AT. HERE'S ONE:
Afterward
Okay, so those are three of the local bands near me. I might talk about some more later (I have more but those are the ones on the top of my head). Any local/nonlocal bands in your area you want to get more spotlight for? Anyone you want to warn us about? Write up a short review about them!

Bands that aren't big enough to warrant their own topic? What?
-
that means i'm not good at making long topics. would you rather me make one semi long topic as a catch all for little known bands or would you rather me make three. That's my way of saying
A) I don't have enough to say about any of these bands to make a full topic on one of them
and
B) I wanted to make a topic for local band reviews and shit.
-
i like the idea behind this because ive been CRAVING some new music but man, theres a reason nobody knows about these guys.

No, I just meant that it doesn't matter how popular or big band is. If you like a band and they make good music, that's all you need. Or about many bands. You just said it in a funny way.

There are some gigantic holes in that logic.

Ok how about we talk about the music now?

All of these are Australian bands.
Cog - 7/10
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=R9qkbHzXPqo
Their first album, Just Visiting, was awesome. Their next two albums are kinda shit; the singer started writing really bad lyrics. Hopefully they'll return to form soon. They're kinda hard rock and a small amount of prog. Here's their wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cog_(band)
The Butterfly Effect - 8/10
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=c6dlgtH8ZtE
I like this band quite a bit. They're kinda alternative, and their latest album, Imago, is really good. Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butterfly_Effect_(band)
The Red Paintings - 7/10
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=IpFt3dFHm9w
These guys are pretty weird to listen to. Apparently they're quite loose live performers (I haven't actually seen them, all their concerts are 18+) but I like their singer. Er...they're not big enough to have a wikipedia article, but they're kinda experimental rock.
Karnivool - 10/10
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=WK-tZvcE8N4
Ok, these guys only have one album (and one EP, but it's generic and bland), but it is really, really, good. They worked for five years on it, so you would hope it was. They're alternative and (according to wikipedia) progressive rock, but none of their songs go for more than about five minutes. Give these guys a listen if you didn't listen to any of the others. Moby actually lived very locally to where I live
sorry it couldn't be anyone good
These guys are kinda cool:
http://www.myspace.com/pencilgrassmusic <--- Pencilgrass
http://www.last.fm/music/Pencilgrass <- this has more of the songs I'd heard before
Charger is pretty cool song to start
man the end reminds me vaguely of the time I heard a dub version of Climbing Up The Walls by Radiohead and it was surprisingly awesome
But yeah my brother would know a lot more about cool local bands, the only thing is he doesn't seem to know any 'real' groups, I mean ones that are well known and can find if you search on the internet for 2 minutes
like I'm not even sure if he'd heard Massive Attack until I lent him a CD of them. Although I didn't make it clear, he'd actually heard /of/ Massive Attack before and a lot of the groups I know now were just me following up on different groups he mentioned when looking for good electronica/etc
Edit: Radiohead isn't LITTLE KNOWN BAND but I'm just posting this if anyone was interested in the dub thingy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA1g7P1D6pk
Edit: If that wasn't technically dub sorry I forget what the qualifications for dub are - and dub is so fun to say
-
sorry but you can't mention australian rock bands without mentioning Dead Letter Circus, and Cog's vocalist sucks btw
-
Cog's vocalist sucks btw
He wasn't bad until he kinda changed his style to sound...I don't know, smoother? Where are Dead Letter Circus from (which state), anyway? I have to say I've never heard of them.
