Title: Can anyone "modify" ROMS?
Post by: Jdizzle on August 29, 2008, 12:22:21 am
I want to edit Secret of Evermore, and make bosses and enemies deal 2x damage. I also would like ingredients to cost 1.5x more, but am willing to settle with just 2x damage.

Is there any way to do this? Anyone skilled in ROM hacking?

If you will try to edit it, or just want it, use the 2 player hacked version found here:

SRRY 4 MISUNDTSTOODING

I'm pretty sure linking to roms is illegal and against GW policy.

dont minimod aten. that counts as minimodding if you didnt know.

jdizzle just keep track on a piece of paper. whenever he deals you damage, just double it, and if you would heal or whatever then do it and if you "die", be truthful and reset the game.

im just kidding but yes this should theoretically be possible right? i mean, what determines the enemies' attack power or whatever is stored somewhere, so yeah i would think this is possible. I dont know how to do it, and i would imagine it would be kinda tough?

You could probably pull that off with "cheat" patching software like a pro action replay. I don't know if anyone would want to stare at the game's memory log long enough to figure out a working code though.

yeah i mean it would probably be really difficult. changing things like, your stats or HP or money or whatever is simple, because when watching the memory you can see it change. you'd have to do some pretty tricky shit to figure out where all the values for the damage calculation come from, although i'd imagine there's some tool to do it. it would be impossible for a human to do it alone, but with some tool it would be possible.

This is probably very easy but time consuming. Try http://www.romhacking.net/ and try searching for the game. There's a whole community dedicated to ROM hacking. There's some pretty cool hacks out there, for nearly any game.

You don't need to use Pro Action Replay or anything. You just need a HEX editor and the right information about the game's structure. Distributing ROM hacks in the form of .ips files is legal. An .ips file is a data format that contains all the modifications of a ROM. There's programs that can patch .ips files to a ROM file, thus changing the game.

UPRC has spent most of his life hacking a Super Mario World ROM, he'd be the man in the know.

Or you could try methods in-game like not leveling your char, equipping him with sub-par items, or refraining from using some of the more powerful spells.

Thanks for the responses!

@GoldenRatio & Dietcoke: I found tons of editors for your own saved files as Goldenratio said, but there currently exist none for other elements of the game. I agree that there must be a way, and that way would require a tool of some sort. Just have to find someone...

@VinceP: I checked Romhacking.net and only found the beautiful 2 player hacked version. (By the way, it actually works!) I have a hex editor, it wasn't very hard to come by. I am able to see all the "hex codes" mind you, but know absolutely nothing about their meaning. So this .ips patcher thing, should I look into it a bit more?

@Esh: I'll wait for some more responses before starting a new game, just in case this UPRC fellow knows anything.

@Goat: I hadn't thought of that. Thank you, this is most likely what I will do.

@Jeff: Hahaha, now you've got me interested.

this kind of hack requires a LOT of research, time and effort. i don't think anyone is going to do it for you.

Not even for a kiss?! What about $?

I'll settle with equipping no gear, then.

I don't know if this makes it any easier or whatever but you could cut your defense in half and it would have the same effect.
Doing stuff in-game to make it harder is personally more satisfying though.

Isn't there a program that lets you hack SMW and make your own levels and shit?
