Title: RAM for laptop
Post by: Ragnar on September 02, 2008, 01:43:14 pm
Well my laptop has like 64 MB of memory not counting that 'page-file' shite and I figure I should get some memory. How much would I need to work comfortably, and I think the RAM chips for laptops are smaller too, right? Are they all the same size or what? (probably a dumb question) Also what should I expect the prices to be

If your computer came with 64MB of RAM, that's probably enough for anything that it can actually handle.

if you've only got 64mb of memory, unless you're really low on budget and time, you're better off just getting a whole new unit, because there is only so much that you can to do to a computer of that age

oh wait it says 192 MB

I got 64 MB because all my programs were around 64 MB and then it said I only had such and such memory left

or something

but the processor is 2.80 Ghz it says

is Windows XP like 128 MB of ram or something

256mb is the minimum recommended for xp, try to get something over that amount and it should feel noticeably faster. Ram is so customized for laptops you need to look online for modules for your specific laptop model, either at your manufacturer's site, or a big name memory site like crucial.com or kingston.com

To check your ram, just right click on My Computer and click properties. It will say in there. If you have a 2.80ghz processor I'm doubting you have 192mb ram.

Windows XP needs 256 MB of RAM to run like at all so what OS were you running?

Well to seriously answer your question about 1 GB is fine for just about anything.  It would cost about $50-$100 tops depending on brand.  For running music programs and such you would want at least 2GB (I doubt your laptop's motherboard supports any more than that).

Do you mean music players or things for making music? Because Buzztracker works fine so far, it gets a little bloated with VSTs but maybe the soundcard handles a lot of it

Vista should be at least 1.5GB (just making a point)

I meant this.

Keep in mind I don't use 500 TB orchestral soundfonts, it's not really that taxing on memory I don't think

I know.  I would have recommended more if you did!

Also most of those huge VSTs like eastwest stream from the hard disk so your ram isn't really that important.
