Title: [GW Olympics] Trackmania Racing
Post by: Carrion Crow on September 08, 2008, 09:34:24 am
Trackmania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trackmania), as featured in Freeware Fridays (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=71042.0) is a fantastic Hot-Wheels style racing game. The point of each game is to get the best time on each track from start to finish, but it requires fast-reactions and moderate short term memory to succeed. Be warned: It is incredibly addictive.

I had a game with Rockman last night and before I could win he shut down the server, so I thought - with such good sportsmanship why not have an GW Olympics Event?

OK Cool I'm sold already gimme the download link!
Your best bet would be to get it through Steam (http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=11020&cc=US) as it is very fast.

Can we suggest tracks for the events?
By all means, but it has to be a valid track of a high standard that has no annoying pitfalls.

When the tracks have been chosen, they will be posted here so you can download and practice them before the events.

When will we hold the events?
Next weekend is looking like the best time to do this so we will aim to have everyone playing the practice tracks beforehand and then we will have a sequence of 10 minute tracks (say 5) and the scores will be tallied via screenshots and afterwards I will apply a MarioKart like points system to see who gets the medals.

Anything else?
If you're still not convinced, here's a snazzy video.

List of competitors so far
1 - crumply/ed
2 - Esh

This is a pretty good turnout already. Good job guys. Be sure to save tracks that you think meet the above criteria and we shall move into phase 2 of suggesting tracks. Sign-ups still welcome.

This is called good black track design. You are basically saying "lets not do black / Rockman's tracks they're too hard" you big pussy

Well you had already won, it just wasn't happening for me

I am preemptively uploading the AWESOMEPLEX because it is fantastic, no "pitfalls" (difficulty) and is p. fun too.

FEAR THE BLACK CAT

FINEST CAR IN THE WEST

Well Sare I'm pretty sure the game ends when one person reaches it? idk how that would work for doing medal positions.

You get time based on how long the race is to finish (usually 10 - 30 seconds), and then it's done by the amount of checkpoints passed.

There's also laps which is quite simply...a PROPER race with laps

Okay so I hit a snag, during the day time (onpeak) my internet has been capped because I downloaded too much shit, I'm still counting on my night time (offpeak) limit but I know it has also almost reached 10 gig.
Basically what I'm saying is that I can only schedule races between 1am and 5am GMT+8
Title: [GW Olympics] Trackmania Racing
Post by: Sarevok on September 09, 2008, 12:45:53 pm
It doesn't matter. Trackmania does all the racing locally so it doesn't matter how slow your internet is.

Also I am PAINTBALLING this saturday but cool I can do anyime after about 5pm GMT (and I have my cousins here but w/e)
Title: [GW Olympics] Trackmania Racing
Post by: Carrion Crow on September 09, 2008, 03:24:19 pm
The only thing that will suffer is the mirrored ghosts of other competitors which mean jack shit in the context of racing to get the best time.

The events will be held about 5PM and no later to be fair to the aussies really. It will be 11pm at that time in Perth.

Shouldn't be a problem making it for 6 or 6:30 if it gets bumped back, hell, that's only like 1am in my time, it's 3:30am at the moment and this is a work night.

-------------------------------------------------------------

We train hard
We train all night
We seek the ultimate prize
GW's Trophy shine's so bright.

Carius the Dingo
Crumply the Skank
Training together
Securing high ranks.

We stand as one
But race as a pair
The cup will be won
But victory we won't share.

I can't write rhymes btw
The end and shit...

Here are a few of our training sessions of the green tracks, highlighting B06 and B07

Thanks for ignoring my post

Seriously green tracks are not difficult / competitive enough.
Title: [GW Olympics] Trackmania Racing
Post by: Jayce on September 10, 2008, 08:40:02 pm
They are difficult when you are competing for the best time, they are of average difficulty and get increasingly harder toward the end, there aren't as many traps and pitfalls as other colours but it's by far the most balanced for anyone to play, even beginners.
But well, I'm sure with that statement you intend on beating all of us on the "easy tracks" huh Rockman?

Thanks for ignoring my post

Seriously green tracks are not difficult / competitive enough.

I think to make the competition accessible to everyone and not people who have been playing for a while now it's important that medium-difficulty tracks are used. Your argument that they are not competitive does not stand as no matter how easy a track is, the skill of the driver determines the time taken to complete it - unless the track is a straight line.

Sigh this sucks man. I finish work at -6- and you're going to do it at bloody half 5

We'll wait for you man, those Aussies will have to stay up late. 6.30 Sunday is what it's looking like atm.

Edit:

A friend linked me to this video on youtube which is the most insane TM related thing I have ever seen

On the weekend I most likely work 4pm-10pm EST on Saturday and possibly Sunday

I might do 11am-5pm on Sunday tho, still unclear

ps all the merit on a track like that goes to the maker

you guys know all the player has to do is step on the gas, right
the track plays itself.
nevermind i guess this isn't youtube

I can see him adjust his position many times during the video, I doubt it's just step on the gas. If it is, it's still very impressive. If it isn't, it's the most insane thing I've ever seen in a game.

rami, he doesn't adjust his position ever. It is just the way the car lands that makes him move a tad. I've played tracks like those before. It is pretty insane though, yeah.

It is a press forward map but apparently it only works with older versions of trackmania because the physics in the new one is different. Either way it is still jaw dropping!

He definitely adjusts it in 0:45. It moved a bit when it hit the floor, and he adjusted it again _after_ that. That or I'm blind.

nah, it's just how he lands. He doesn't land perfectly even, so he turns a bit automagically. It's a press forward track, all you have to do is press forward. :P It doesn't work in the newer Trackmania tho, but yeah he doesn't ever change his position, it's just how he winds up landing that gives that illusion.

I have tallied the results and I present them in tabular form:

The yellow represents the points gained for a track, the white is the cumulative score for that racer.

The bottom screen is shows the final scores in white with myself getting gold, Carius getting silver (by one point) and Sarevok getting Bronze.

We should do something different for another one. Maybe a team event or something, where we buddy up with same nationalities and add each team's scores together. (we could even do another Olympic one since there were two speedrun events)
Title: [GW Olympics] Trackmania Racing
Post by: Carrion Crow on September 14, 2008, 10:30:48 pm
That's a pretty good suggestion, I reckon we can do just that. I guess the hardest part would be making sure the rest your team turned up so there isn't an imbalance. Also we could perhaps have 2 trial runs to start off with, tally the places then go down from first to last splitting the odd and even places into two teams (so the competition is balanced).

The green tracks seemed to work pretty well although with planning we could use more interesting maps of similar difficulty to spice it up a bit.

I might let it die down for a few days then create a topic for a phase two or something (New topic = more attention) but yeah it worked well and the server behaved - all good!

The trouble with national teams is that some countries are only represented by one person. So unless Grindie shows up I won't be able to compete (not that I'd win anyway).

Yeah, that's true of course, I guess I was just thinking that since we already have at least two Brits and two Aussies it wouldn't be so difficult to rustle together more teams. I can see why you specifically (and I'm sure quite a few others) would have a bit of trouble. I'm not sure how scoring would work with mixed teams though.

EDIT: Wait a minute Harland surely you qualify for the GBR team? (I read that as just Ireland which would cause trouble!) unless there's some circumstance I'm unaware of.

Man, racing with all those britfags last night was awful, I was bullied heaps, they all circled me and put on hacks that stopped me from passing through them and then they ALL started blaring their horns, (which one of you had the dukes of hazard horn?) and yeah.

Too much britmeat at an already cramped sausagefest.

GBR and IRL are seperate.

Yeah but Great Britain and Northern Ireland aren't! (way to read you made the same mistake I did)

EDIT: well fuck Harland is actually representing the Republic I had no idea.

EDIT EDIT: I am willing to pull out my Tipperary heritage in order to preserve your participation Harland!

also if rami can get another Flying Finn on-board we have a Finland team too! (I could get one on board but a) he's not a GWer and b) he would kick all our asses)

Does this mean I have to be in a team with Sarevok or esh. They both drive like Honda grannies.

Green tracks sucks, you should do the harder (maybe not black) tracks.

Yeah, teams would be better. I mean, if we did it exactly the same then the medals would just be exactly.the same. Seems kind of pointless.

If you mean the original event, then it's already finished.
As far as things go for future events it comes down to whatever the hell crumply decides on.
