i dont care if im gay, i love tori amos!!!!!! like really though i like her quite a bit. her music is weird and cool and doesn't really sound like anything else, or maybe it does, and i just don't know much about weird piano-driven shit. anyway she is also WAY FUCKING OUT THERE and strange as hell, which is great i think, and it helps that she is a real MiLf (seriously). a lot of the time it will just sound like a crazy sort of frantic but ornate wall of sound i think, but she can be really simple, too, and pretty EMOTIVE, vocally (the piano helps here, i think). like she has a very intense voice at times, i would say. anyway i have literally never seen her mentioned here, and basically the only reason i even know who she is beyond SOME WOMAN is because my brother listened to her nonstop when i was a kid and we shared a room. her slow songs kind of give me a headache after a while but aside from that she's ace imo
so yeah who likes tori amos!!!!!!!!!
-
oh and also heres some youtubes i guess???
-
now that you mention it she is a pretty big milf. i've never really listened to her music tho. the only thing i remember hearing her do was a cover of smells like teen spirit lol
-
The youtube's don't work and I have to be completely honest: I have never listened to Tori Amos. But milf's are my favourites so hook me up.
is most of her stuff like this?
i would so much eat your shit girl! you are the best out there!
hmmm....
-

yo i thought that was a good cover. darkwhite said TOO SERIOUS but i thought it was pretty intense/urgent, which i thought was a spin that was kind of similar to the original intent of the song.
also afura they work for me! did you try just double clicking them and bringing them up in an actual page? anyway, there is no way all tori amos sounds like. her music ranges from fairly traditional piano pieces to weird shit to other kinds of weird shit. she's a pretty experimental/varied/eclectic musician, i think, which is a large part of the reason i dig/respect her (as a woman.........)
-
I love Tori Amos!
Most people don't know her beyond Cornflake Girl or the Armand Van Helden remix of Professional Widow but she is truly an amazing artist.
Granted, some of her newer stuff isn't that great. But her first album is AMAZING!
-
if you've ever met her fans its pretty easy to hate her. like, she's one of the most overrated musicians there is, and its solely because of a fanbase that goes COMPLETELY FUCKING INSANE for anything tori omg toooori i love you XD!!!
also her vocal styling shit gets kind of annoying imho, I still think she says I NEED A JEW BOY during Blue Skies.
but yeah shes one of those artists I have a lot of trouble separating from the culture that surrounds her, and since its so incredibly disgusting (FAIRY GIRLS) yeah not a big fan I guess.
really like that song Seaside though.
-
heh.......NOPE i dont think so. better luck next time. :colb:
but yeah I don't dig it at all. she's talented, and has a strong voice in most of what I heard, but it all bugs me. that's really all I can say since she's obviously good at what she does. oh and sometimes she reminds me of Kate Bush who I think is REALLY bad.
p.s. you know who DOES like her a lot? MY GAY COUSIN.
-

THIS TOO
-
remember the time Chef became a Kate Bush fan? that was some weird shit.
-
her voice is way too wispy i think. i listened to the two youtubes. i don't really like the first song - it's pretty, yeah, but i've heard things like it just done a lot better. the second one i really like the music but her voice i don't. i'm going to get an album, see what i think. i could possibly get into this, maybe her voice just takes some getting used to. i don't mean to say i think it's original or anything, i think the problem is her voice is like the worst parts of traditional female ballad voice just amplified. but heck i like people like joanna newsom so the whole separating musicians from their fans isn't such a problem for me.
i just listened to the third youtube. it's a lot easier to listen to her singing if you don't watch her sing at the same time. her voice is pretty annoying in this song, in a different way from the other two. it's not a bad song.
-
remember the time Chef became a Kate Bush fan? that was some weird shit.
haha yeah. i saw his lastfm and it was just Kate Bush - Jig of Life on repeat (or at least played a lot in a short time.)
hey chef... you're a nut!!!!!
-
t-pain feat. tori amos lets do it people.
-
this song rules because it has lyrics that make sense and no squiggly voice antics.
-
yeah that's easily the best so far
-
whats wrong with kate bush? not that I listen to her, heh. come on now guys.
dude pidgeotto where'd you get that quote in your sig
-
I know she did "Muhammad my friend" live with Maynard and I thought it was pretty good.
I might listen to some more of her stuff but I don't want anyone thinking I'm gayer than I already seem what with the music I listen to now.
-
seaside is really good. i think ill check her out i am a sucker for hot chicks and pianos.............regina spektor im lookin at you
-
wel well well... looks like we got ourselves a formal debate..
-
I would debate but unlike some I'm not willing to do it at just any time.
-

really like that song Seaside though.
yeah its not really fair to judge someone based on their stupid fanbase, though! i can see how that gets annoying, and i didn't know anything about her fans, although none of this really surprises me, but i don't think it's so difficult to distinguish between her and the fairy girls that like her. i don't think any artist really appreciates people judging them based on something so unrelated to their work.
also i like the QUAVERING VOICE shit, you know? like she is a good vocalist so i think it is less like this tiresome attempt to be original and more a legitimate stylistic thing, and on the whole it contributes to the sense that her music is weird as hell. plus she was IN BEFORE THE RUSH of unexceptional female singers, so i kind of give her a lot of credit for being a progenitor of that entire thing probably. it would be like lumping pavement in with all the random boring alt rock bands they inspired! i could see why you wouldnt be a fan of her voice though, or any of her shit. it is kind of separate from most other stuff i listen to.
anyway yeah you shouldnt judge her outside of her own context i think. like i maybe more than anyone am sick of uninspired female vocalists, and there's a slew of them around, but it's not so accurate to take a song from 1992 and sort of hold it up to the same standards. jamicus if your problem is how WISPY she is (was this even something women did in 92 or is this also more recent? i really don't know) then you still might like her. she tends to do it more in live songs, and there are quite a bit of songs like seaside where it is stronger and not wispy/quavery.
also yeah kate bush is exactly what i'm talking about when i say bad female vocalists. but all of those women usually have really uninteresting music, and if you take a song like caught a lite sneeze or blood roses it is a lot weirder/more interesting than LOOK HERE IS MY ACOUSTIC GUITAR i think.
also also i think that just because the lyrics are not as CLEARLY APPARENT as they are in seaside does not necessarily make them nonsensical. it is kind of a hazy line between stuff that's just sort of obtuse as hell but still understandable and stuff that only makes sense to whoever wrote it, but even as long as it makes sense to them, i wouldn't call it nonsensical. i think as long as you can glean even some sort of intent/emotion from them, if not a direct literal meaning, they're somewhat effective.

bzz bzzzz look at this
you were going ok but then WHAM!!! right into a wall of bricks...
edit: looks like another successful trolling by Ear Chips
-
what?
i mean i assume you aren't serious, but i don't even get the joke!
-
did you remove the l in earl becuase I'm pretty sure I didn't type ear chips.
I'm not really sure, have you listened to kate bush? or were those two disconnected thoughts placed next to each other. cause while you might not like her vocals, comparing the music to some girl hammering on an acoustic guitar is pretty odd. call the music GAY if you want, but unoriginal doesn't really fit at all
basically not the best thing to do when defending tori amos  i think she is OK
edit: are you thinking of kate nash? she blows she's ok but she blows
-
yeah sorry kate bush is not who i thought she was, but i didn't realize it until i just youtubed her. i have her confused with uh some random young thing that's doing shit now and is from england, who is just another one of those boring female singer/songwriters. i've never actually heard her before but you're right, her music isn't really unoriginal at all! i am not too big on her though as it really does kind of feel a little too BALLADish i guess. maybe that is just the 80s though.
yeah, kate nash is who it was, thanks! she is terrible though for real, but i guess its okay because shes hot as hell (lol...)
-
how'd I know!!
yeah kate bush is described idiosyncratic, eclectic etc. ok now your post makes sense!!
stuff from the Kick Inside is more balladish but her later stuff is more experimental and weird. check out her hounds of love album it's a Fan Favorite
edit: I mean her music is called eclectic not her.
-

i dig this man. my friends always make fun of me because i listen to regina spektor who does a lot of weird voice shit but i dont care..... i love it anyway
-
Aren't like all of her songs about getting raped and having a miscarriage? I dunno, I've never really been a fan of her music, but she's not bad.
But anyway, she's pretty hot (or at least she used to be)
-
I don't think Kate Bush is too bad.
-

yo just dropping in to say that both Nash and Bush are bad, but at least nash is kinda hot i agree :fogetcool: to me kate bush is just shriek shriek shriek im 'out there'.
welp im out, peace. maybe you'll learn in time...........
-
its caled an opinnon -_-
-
kate nash ugh I don't know.
note that baseball19225 doesn't like any female vocalists. heh, big surprise there....not
seriously tho kate bush rules and she looks like sarah palmer's cousin
-
well, to be honest, i don't like a whole lot of female vocalists, either! i mean i like SOME (adeline do you really not like any????), but not nearly as many as i do male vocalists.
-
remember the time Chef became a Kate Bush fan? that was some weird shit.
kate bush has some very good songs man. i don't want to derail the topic but......................
a couple of her albums are pretty good (hounds of love is 80s as fuck) and i like a lot of her songs. also cool dancing!!! that's not to say i'm crazy about kate bush or anything (heh... just peep that last.fm. i don't even think she's in my top 50!!!!) but i like to listen to some of her songs every once in a while. i would say she is slightly more tolerable than tori amos.
-

all things considered that's not too surprising, for anyone. I have 1/3 of a topic on vocalists typed up in notepad but I never post topics
-
(adeline do you really not like any????)
no??? I don't know where render's getting his facts cos they're WRONG. i mean, i like more male singers than female (as is the case for lots of people), but i got nothing against female vocals.its caled an opinnon -_-
go to hole..
-
dunno I think the whole woman with a piano thing is really just a bunch of people trying to be Joni Mitchell
-

heh, name one then
yea, just like I thought....you can't. oh brother
-
this is probably my favorite tori amos song
-
you's a dick
also real_jamicus what do you think of this vocal-wise???
-
heh, name one then
yea, just like I thought....you can't. oh brother
Magic Dirt................bitch. dont try that stunt again :fogethuh:
-
I quite like Kate Bush :(
-
you's a dick
also real_jamicus what do you think of this vocal-wise???
i really really like the chorus in this song. i got this album now, too. i like her voice here the most i've heard it anywhere so far i think. she has this twinge of an old english accent on some words, usually around "ah" sounds. that gets on my nerves, because it just sounds pretentious and haughty i guess. i dunno how she actually talks and i'm not one to talk about fake singing accents but what can i say, i hate it when frank sinatra does it too, a lot of singers do this although it's mostly older ones.
but even though i've got my stupid little complaints about her voice, this music is at least interesting to me. listening to her voice is good and bad, not just ugh yuck, and the music itself is often pretty good, too. it's a little bit cheesey all round but i like that. the music is obviously nothing like this, but i mean one of my favourite albums is smile from the streets you hold by john frusciante and a lot of that album is pretty damn bad just from how it sounds but it's really interesting to listen to and there's a whole atmosphere about it. so it's a similar deal here, although instead of being abrasive at times it is haughty and generic, but there's also good stuff.
-
part of my problem with amos and her lillith fair ilk is I've always had the impression their music is more about keeping a certain aesthetic rather than being, you know, good. amos, ani di franco, and a lot of THEEEEM have huge discographies and a lot of the albums suck but try telling a fan that. they even respect Y Kant Tori Read?, an infamously terrible first effort ruined by studio interference, because it comes from TOOOOORRRII.
a lot of the time I listen to them it's clearly more about catering to some fanbase that I really want no part of. I've been fans of groups with ridiculous fanbases before (Marillion just leaked their new album guys!) so its not just FANBASES EW but the degree to which they are obsessed over. whether it's intentional or not, every fucking thing Amos does, from her music to just her LIFE WORK (does it surprise anyone she's friends with Neil Gaiman and they're doing a comic book together, no doubt based on her works?) is all about her fanbase, not about making good music.
and she can make good music, she's clearly talented, but when you hear a song like Me and a Gun, you have to wonder at the genuinity of writing a song about being raped in first person and whether she's just really talented at channeling rape victims (and I mean, the band I just mentioned, Marillion, wrote a brilliant album about suicide so it's not like it's impossible) or whether it was just the setup for an aesthetic that she keeps today, and that's really not a problem I have with most artists so like I said, music for a fanbase, not music for music's sake.
-
that and its really gay music and if I'm going to listen to that shit I've got other bands.
*turns on Sufjan Stevens, moans along to the lyrics*
-
dunno I think the whole woman with a piano thing is really just a bunch of people trying to be Joni Mitchell
Joni is pretty awesome!
I like Kate Bush and Tori as well :) But then again I like this style of music (chicks at piano) so I dunno. Within Temptation did a pretty nice (at least I think so) cover of Running up that Hill by Kate Bush.
Also she's vegan lolz
-
that and its really gay music
this too. i'm gonna go listen to a song about guns now, just to recover from this topic.
(Marillion just leaked their new album guys!)
hey what's the go with Marillion's fans? i like the group, but are the fans really obsessive and nerdy?
-
hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah maybe but you know, it's not like this is anything beyond an impression. i don't have it, but i have never listened to any of those other female artists that she gets grouped with. tbh, though, i sort of like the idea of maintaining an aesthetic in spite of it having a negative effect on quality. like i've always gotten the impression that her music is very much an extension of herself, and her personality. a change in aesthetic would be pretty inappropriate and, i think if given a choice between making an album that was representative of me but not that great vs an album that was better but with which i identified with less, i would probably choose the former. i'm not saying the album will be GOOD or should be considered good, but i can understand the urge to maintain an aesthetic.
whether it's intentional or not, every fucking thing Amos does, from her music to just her LIFE WORK is all about her fanbase, not about making good music.
how do you even substantiate this as a statement? its very BOLD CLAIM to make, you know, and it kind of seems like you're basing it off stuff that is wrong! like you mention me and a gun as an example of a song that sort of throws her sincerity into question and makes you wonder whether or not she's just pandering to her fanbase, but you know she is not just CHANNELING RAPE VICTIM right? like the song is based on her own rape, i think. i don't really think the fact that this isn't a problem you have with other artists really makes it any more of a legitimate claim, either! like you can't just say whelp she's the only person i feel this way about so i guess i'm right
-
she was never raped bro.
she was kidnapped by some guy after a show who threatened to rape her but as far as I know didn't actually touch her and then threw her out of the van.
she also said that man and a gun isn't about her in interviews.
b*tch I dated two fairy girls you tryin to step on the useless tori knowledge i've gathered....think again.
-
i saw an interview where she said pretty explicitly that she was raped and in another one that songs like that were more a way of TURNING UGLINESS INTO SOMETHING GOOD than channeling rape fans. seriously i think you're wrong! even wiki says she was raped.
-
oh i guess i misremembered it, apparently the discrepancy is whether she was raped at GUNPOINT or not.
but i seriously could swear MULTIPLE TIMES hearing she wasn't.
im gonna investigate this more!!!!!!!fuck tori amos (because shes a SLUT lol)
edit: think I found it
The song was inspired by a real event in Tori's life, an event refers to as a rape in some interviews, and a sexual assault in others. For years there has been discussion on the net about this song and how much it has helped others who were violated. However, there are also some postings online that say that Tori was not really raped. This has caused a considerable amount of confusion among some Toriphiles, and to this day I still get emails that ask, "Was Tori Amos Really Raped?"
thats probably what happened; conflicting interviews. I knew the Tori fans on SA were also saying she hadn't been raped, so I guess it all stems from this.
-
she was prolly beggin for it with that sensual piano p[layin of hers....
-
y kant tori read? because shes a woman and as such spends her time in the kitchen making meals for men.
-
all tori songs are about being raped except im the victim
