Title: Skin problems help!
Post by: AdderallApocalypse on September 14, 2008, 07:19:54 pm
Ok, so I have a few skin problems, and maybe you guys can help me? First of all are blackheads on my nose. Why do they appear there, what is a good way to get them all gone, and how do I prevent them? Next, on the back of my lower arms I have pimples and some blackheads(actually they might be whiteheads). Same thing, how to get rid of them?!? Thanks for any helpful advice.

Well wash it, if you have sensitive skin then don't use manly soap. Be sure to rub/scrub in soap for 20 seconds before rinsing.

Is there really anything else to say? Here I thought it would be boils or something.

I would seriously recommend that you follow this link (WebMD- Questions and Answers About Acne (http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/qa-acne))for some very good information on dealing with acne.

Oh, and whatever you do, DO NOT POP YOUR ZITS/BLACKHEADS.  You could end up scarring your face by popping them.

yeah dont listen to everyone else in this thread because just WASHING YOUR FACE will not get rid of acne, that's stupid. if it was as simple as just WASHING i have to believe very few people would have acne, since everyone washes their faces. i keep my face very clean and never touch it and i still get acne here and there GUESS I BETTER WASH MORE EH

yeah, you dirty guy.

seriously unless you are really trapped in the ravages of puberty or have a serious acne problem (not a few blackheads here and there) just use a facial scrub or whatever.

Alot of it has to do with diet and hormonal balance, so I suggest you look into that.

Yeah, don't eat too many fatty foods. Also, exercise well and make sure you're not stressed. Fatty food and stress + not going outside once in awhile is not good for you anyway. Might as well get rid of the acne in the process.

<sarcasm>
Also, popping zits is a sign of manliness do it whenever possible -- even the ones that harden because you mess with them all day and they don't have a hole to bust the...whatever the hell that is; for those you take a needle, burn the tip of it, wet it with rubbing alcohol, and bust in there like Chuck Norris's awesomesauce roundhouse kick (tm).
</sarcasm>

Mm...awesomesauce.

well yeah i mean but how old is omcifer? i figure if he's 15-19 he's going to have some acne and unless it's like HORRIBLE (which the way he described it sounds like normal acne) then he's not going to get rid of it completely. the only thing he can really do is wash his face and not eat shit.

I'm 18. Yeah, I guess it's the whole "oily teenage skin" or something, but so far I think I've found out what I wanted. Anything else that you guys want to tell me is definitely wanted.

Okay, your skin needs to breathe and you might have to teach it to do it properly. To do that whenever you've had a shower put cold water on it, whenever you've shaved and put after shave put cold water on the hot areas. Basically always put cold water after your done cleaning yourself with war/hot water. Assuming you shave or bathe every morning, if not then just put some hot water on your face and/or other areas of your skin. Wait a bit (10-30 seconds) then place cold water on your face and/or other areas of your skin. Causes your skin to expand and contract to the temperature.

Also make sure your hair isn't covering your forhead cause it actually does block off alot of oxygen for your skin (atleast thats what happened with me, short hair acneless forehead long hair over forehead acne all over forehead).

well yeah its not a CLEANLINESS problem really.

myself, i've been on like 5 different types of antibiotic (i had it very bad in my early teens, its much better now though) but if it does get TERRIBLE go to your doctor and they can normally prescribe something. i've exhausted everything now, but luckily its beginning to go away on its own.

my only other option is roaccutane.

I use Bioré's Nose Trips:
(http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/24626/biore.jpg)Be sure to read the instructions, and after you're finished use some balm to close the pores and prevent further white heads.

Use neutral sope to clean your face, avoid milk soaps. When possible exfoliate your face.

Proactive works like shit. As do 99% of over-the-counter medications. Go see a dermatologist.

I went to a dermatologist for my acne, and she prescribed me Retin-A Micro. Pimples and blackheads= gone. It may be expensive to set an appointment and for the medication, but you'll end up spending way more on over-the-counter stuff in the long run.

Retin-A worked for shit for me. I read that your suppose to break out a lot for like the first 5 weeks or something, then you'll be good to go after that, but that never happened, it kept getting worse. That was a long time ago though.

Make sure your getting enough Vitamins and Minerals, in either food or tablet form (food form is better). Also you could take some sulfur tablets.

And drink plenty of water everyday.

I had pretty bad acne when I was a teenager and the only thing that worked was not fussing with my face all the time.  I started washing my body and my face with plain antibacterial bar soap and have never had acne problems since.

Another thing that worked was Accutane but it is an extremely dangerous and expensive medication and I got very sick when I was taking it.

No trouble telling your Newfie aha!

But in all seriousness, Cut out sugary foods as much as possible. I stopped drinking pepsi and Coke (now drink 7up,sprite,ginger ale, root beer) and I cut down on chocolate to hardly ever. Not only is it helping me shed pounds but It made my face a lot better, Now I use a facial mask cleanser rather than proactiv or those crazy psycho meds accutane.

Well I guess this is sort of on topic.

What do you guys do for eczema? I have this bastard itch on my neck + lower stomach. The lower stomach I took care of by not wearing a belt (I'm allergic to nickel apparently) -- instead I use shoe strings (pretty ghetto, huh.) As for my neck, it pops out whenever I'm stressed for long periods of time, or if I sleep on my stomach. I used to use cortaid to stop the itch but it doesn't work. Recommendations?

Proactiv actually worked for me, you just need to avoid their "repairing lotion" crap because it seems to do the opposite of moisturizing your skin.  You're already applying two topical treatments with a higher than average (and by higher than average I mean compared to most treatments over the counter/ on the shelf) benzoyl peroxide and the lotion still contains more of it.  If you can find a lotion that actually does moisturize your skin with no real risk to add to the drying out of your skin, it works like cake.  Proactiv is way too expensive for people to be using it and getting worse results if not any to begin with.

This isn't exactly a skin problem, but does anyone here suffer from dark circles under their eyes? I have them, and I play on the computer on average 10 hours a day. Could this be the cause?

My boss had this she just got plastic surgery to remove them.  She's weird though because she is one of those chicks that always thinks they are fat and she spent $5000 (I believe) on plastic surgery to make her nose a little smaller (she's not even jewe).

if you use an oil free moisturizing lotion on top of the repairing lotion it works fine.

yeah it is, also it could be a blood pressure problem. Another reason could be the genes you got from your family(the women on my father's bloodline also have this shit so I got it from them) You can't do much about it, it's really hard to get rid of it(surgery). Personal experience: put some grated potatoes under your eyes, it helps a little

edit:

oh yeah, i forgot. I use this shit and my skin is like babies' butts.

seriouspost: It's a little known fact that the protein found in male ejaculant has skin rejuvenating properties. If you dab a little coat of semen over the effected area of skin before you go to sleep and once in the morning, you can clear your skin in like 2 days. The down side is that you have to put cum on ur face

Oh, OTC derm questions. This is right up my alley.

For blackheads I'd personally go with 2% salicylic acid - apply to the affected area twice daily. Salicylic acid is an exfoliant, meaning that it'll peel of the superficial layers of the skin. Blackheads are open comedos, oxidized keratin causing the colour to be black. Acne hasn't been shown to be related to diet, so unless personally certain foods do cause you to have more acne I wouldn't bother changing your diet.

For pimples the best over the counter option is benzoyl peroxide 5%, applied twice daily. The gel formulation is the best in terms of effectiveness, but it is the most irritating due to the alcohol it contains. You should start off using it once a daily for the first week and then going up to twice daily. If even that is highly irritating for you, there is an alcohol-free formulation.

With all acne treatments, you're not going to get miracle results over night. Most of them will take 1 or 2 weeks to see effect, with the most beneficial effect commonly seen in 4 to 6 weeks. Just make sure that you stick with whatever product you go with and see how it works in a months time. If the over the counter products just aren't cutting it for you, talk to your doctor and they'll prescribe a topical product for you to try. There are a variety of options available.

Sorry if this has been said already.

What's on the back of your arms is most likely not acne, but a form of emphyzema. There are creams made specifically for the condition (I can't remember the name, but if you look up upper arm rash or something yous hould find it).

As for your blackheads, unfortunately there's not much you can do as acne is genetic. But if you want to ease it a little bit, you're going to need to know your skin type. If your skin is dry and you're overwashing you can be drying it out. If skin is dry it will produce excess oil to try to counter it.

Okay, so if you have dry skin, use a mild cleanser (non foaming or cream based) and then an exfoliant once a week, follow with a moisturizer. Make sure your hands are clean when you apply it. You might also wish to use toner.

If you have oily skin, use a cleanser (gel or foam based), and then exfoliate twice a week. Apply moisturizer as well, but you don't have to as often.
