Title: Planning to buy... (PS3 vs. XBOX360)
Post by: thejackyl on September 18, 2008, 04:25:41 pm
Alright, So I have a Wii, and so far only one game coming to it interests me (Mad World).  And none of the other games that have been released, that I don't have look very good.  So I've been thinking about getting one of the other current-gen consoles.

I'm still currently undecided about which one to get.  (I can only afford one right now), and my friends around here are baised morons, so...  I'm looking for which console is better for me.  Things I'm looking for are:

- What games are exclusive to each console
- Price
- Games worth buying for each system
- Anything else you want to add

Help me make up my mind.  I'm currently leaning towards the PS3 though

360 will have a price drop this or next week (I think), after which you can get the premium for like 200 bucks, and Elite for 260 (I think). So considering the price, 360 wins hands down. Both systems have many games worth buying, I think the 360 might have a bit more because it's been there longer. PS3 has exclusives like MGS3, Little Big Planet and Uncharted, while 360 has exclusives like Mass Effect (well it's also for PC), BioShock (also for PC), Lost Odyssey, Gears of Wars and Halo 3.

One thing I absolutely love in 360 is Live Arcade. There's tons of great games likes Castle Crushers, Braid, Symphony of the Night, Bionic Commando Rearmed and more. I don't know very much about the PS3 "arcade" games or whatever they call it.

They're both great choices, but I'd go for 360 only because it's over 2x cheaper (the premium one anyway, unless you want elite) than PS3.

I have a PS3, and I'd say get a 360. Unless you could wait another 5 weeks to see if Little Big Planet is as good as it looks (remember Spore???) MGS4 was pretty disappointing (the gameplay parts are good but that's like 6 hours in a 15 hours game), and Uncharted is decent but everyone makes a big deal out of it because it's one of the few good PS3 exclusives. Anyone wanting to buy a PS3 should definitely wait.

I say go with Xbox 360 but because I have one, so I know it's kind of worth buying... I don't know about the PS3 but I heard that going online on it is free, where as the xbox live you have to pay which is like £40 a year which is also the cheapest option. If your going to get one of these consoles you HAVE to know that if your not planning to play online then it's not really worth it, it's all about multiplayer when getting these consoles because that is where you get entertained the most.

Recommended games for the Xbox 360:
Saints Row
Halo 3
Gears of War

Recommended games for the PS3:
Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGO is really good especially if your a MGS fan)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Resistance: Fall of Man

I would hold off for a while and see when the ps3 exclusive franchises will be coming out (Final Fantasy whatever, God of War 3, Kingdom Hearts 3, etc.)

One of the biggest reasons to get 360 is that if you're uncertain which one you should get, is that you'll regret a lot less spending 200 bucks, than you'll regret spending 500. ;-)

XBOX 360 all the way!

If you like RPGs, XBOX has Lost Odyssey exclusive, the Tales series exclusive, Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant exclusive, Star Ocean 4 exclusive, and FFXIII is coming to it as well! PS3 got nothing on that!

I bought a PS3 for MGS4 and I haven't touched it in 3 months.

I want to play Castle Crashers so bad too..

The library is so limited and everybody plays multiplayer on 360.

Btw MGS4 sucks balls.

What games are you into because each console has it's own like.. Territory. An avid Rpg player then your choice is the Xbox 360 hands down. Just this year their have been more Rpgs released for it then Playstation 3 has all up. If your more the action guy then either one of them would be a good choice as both have a good selection.

Also gotta think about lasting appeal such as DLC. Xbox 360 has more, also Achievements for all it's games. Only some for the Playstation 3 but that will change with time. I'll just bring up a list of games out and up coming for each console..

-Xbox 360-

Gears of War - Great 3rd person shooter with some pretty good online. Excellent co-op.
Kameo Elements of Power - 3rd person adventure/platformer-ish game that is very well done and unique.
Lost Odyssey - Just a great Rpg, Four discs long and has some well worth moments.
Eternal Sonata - I haven't played this but hear great things about it. Beautiful graphical style to it and apparently based around music.
Halo 3 - Although overhyped really badly still a good game to play. Has a great online and a lot of little extras that make this game overall a good purchase.
Crackdown - Like Grand Theft Auto on crack. Plus your a cop. Great fun gameplay but story and missions are pretty much the same all the way through. Fun co-op and DLC such as Keys to the city give it a bit more lasting appeal.
Mass Effect - Although a bit buggy still a worth while game to consider. Alien sex scene if that's your thing haha.
Command and Conquer series - Great strategy future war game that works amazing on the 360.
Dead Rising - Run around grabbing anything you can use as a weapon in a mall full of zombies.. With a twist.
Forza 2/Test Drive Unlimited - These over Granturismo anyday.
Ninja Gaiden 2 - I haven't played it yet but I hear it's really good.. And challenging.

Plus backwards compatibility with Xbox One games. Plenty of arcade classics as well as stuff like Braid.

Upcoming games..

Fable 2, Gears of War 2, The Last Remnant timed exclusive, Banjo Kazooie,  etc.

-Playstation 3-

Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots - Not much into this series but you may like it. Be warned over 30 minute cut scenes.
Uncharted - Fucken awesome game, creators of Jak and Crash Bandicoot. Funny and almost feels like a younger Indiana Jones.
Resistance Fall of Man - One of the best FPS's Ive played. Definitely worth a play.
Heavenly Sword - Very short and not really worth full price.. But it's pretty well done and worth a rental at least.
Ratchet and Clank FTOD - Great game if your into platformers or the Ratchet series in general.
Warhawk - Just fucken fun online war. You get a choice of planes, ground, vehicles all with 16+ online matches. Downside is it has no single player campaign.
Motorstorm - I hate this game but you may find it alright.
Granturismo 5 Prologue - If you've played the 4th you've already played this. Amazing visuals though.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma - Just a port of Ninja Gaiden from the Xbox one but with a few added extras and side story.

Upcoming games..

Resistance 2, Littlebigplanet, Infamous, Killzone 2, Tekken 6, White Knight Story, God of War 3, etc.

I believe that one version of the 360 dropped to $199 recently. (It's on sale now at wal-mart, where I work)
One last thing about the 360, is the RRoD still as bad a it used to be?  I have a friend who's on his 6th one, and now he just game up owning one.

Edit: For games, I mainly play FPSs and RPGs, however I like most genres except racing and fighting(beat 'em ups are fine, but I could never get into Street Fighter and those games)

Edit2: I probably will get both eventually. unless the next-gen consoles get released within 2 or 3 years.  I don't see that happening.  Announced, maybe.  Released, no.

After some consideration, I'm leaning towards an XBOX.  One last question before I go to bed...  How much is XBL monthly or yearly.  I heard from one person it's $40/Year, and another $50/Year (not really bad), and how is it billed.  I'm just curious about whether or not I can have them take the price from my credit card, so I don't have to waste a check.

After looking at the site, it seems you get XBL Silver for free, and XBL Gold is estimated to cost $49.99 for a year.

Personally, I'm thinking of getting one if I save up enough for it, but I'm also wondering about the RRoD, it's the one thing that's stopping me getting one, I don't want to get a console that's gonna give up and die within the first few weeks. I was thinking of getting an Elite or failing that the Premium.

Microsoft have fixed that Red Ring of Death, so all new xbox 360 consoles don't have or shouldn't have that problem, I also was scared of that problem but I got one and it's been like a year now and I haven't had any problems.

Oh by the way something that you might want to hear, Xbox live Silver lets you play cross platform games for free online, which means any game on the xbox 360 which is on the pc will be free to play online. I'm not sure if this is true or not because I don't haven't hooked up my xbox 360 to the internet but if it is that's really good news.

http://kotaku.com/5029541/rumor-xbl-silver-now-allows-free-online-play

EDIT: only Lost Planet: Colonies, Shadowrun and Universe at War: Earth Assault will be free to play if you have xbox live silver, sorry guys my bad...

It's $50 (at least here). You can pay with CC, or you can buy a pre-paid code from a shop (which I did). I use my CC to buy microsoft points from the live though. Anyway, it's totally worth it, because some of the best games for 360 are on XBL.

I'm not so sure about another price drop for the 360.  Microsoft literally just (like in September I think) dropped the prices of the consoles.  Arcade=$200, Pro=$300, Elite=$400. (CDN)

I would think this drop was for the Christmas season.  Microsoft was promoting it like mad because it makes the arcade the cheapest next gen console out there now.

I personally just went out and got an Elite (I had a Pro but liked the larger harddrive and HDMI capabilities of the Elite).  I'm enjoying it thusfar.

I also have a PS3 which I like a lot.  I do think that my Xbox has a lot more A+ games though.

Yeah, the price drop came as a surprise. In one of my free lessons in college I walked to town today and looked at the elite price.

First thought that came to my head? 'Holy fuck that just got cheap!' £229.99 ish for an Elite with controller, headset and xbox live trial + 3 selected games, which for me would be Halo 3, Mass Effect and either Lost Oddeysey or Forza Motorsport, which would be before save up for the other 2 Halo games, just so I haev the full set, and the fact that Halo 1 is the best!

Buuuuuut, I'm going to be saving up for the 360 after I get the new Warhammer 40k Starter set, Orks > Master Chief anyday!

I've decided that this gaming generation sucks balls. And yes my word is absolute and definitive.

Anyways, I'd go for the 360 by far. I can't think of any worthy PS3 exclusive, besides MGS4. I played Gears of War and it's awesome.. so  buy that.

XB360 doesn't have many true exclusives, you can get most of its lineup on the PC (It's Microsoft, so go figure.), with free multiplayer you don't have to pay monthly for. The XB360's best exclusives are all on its arcade, and Halo 3 (which will hit PC's soon enough, believe it.)

PS3 has LBP, MGS4, and the side FF13's and other stuff coming up, and none of those are bound to hit PC any time soon.

there's way more to LBP than side scroller. just like there's more to Half-Life that makes it an FPS that breaks the mold. LBP is pretty much breaking the mold of side scrollers/games in general. it's one of the few games that is going to change how developers think about games.

mass effect owns the fuck out of stupid sidescrollers you heard it here first.......owned...

ps innovations that stay exclusive to one console tend to stay that way. hello nintendo wii.
Title: Planning to buy... (PS3 vs. XBOX360)
Post by: HL on September 19, 2008, 09:40:01 pm
it's not exclusive to one console, the idea of giving the player the tools to change the game however they want in a casual convenient way, letting them direct the game's direction, is not exclusive to one console and has been a movement that has been happening in the industry for some time now. Mods, etc. This is just the first time it'll be done in an easy to understand way so that even my grandma can make something.

if lbp does well it's going to signal other developers to follow.

Motion sensoring in the Wii is an entirely different thing because it's not an innovation to begin with. Motion sensoring has existed for some time before the Wii, the Wii was just the first time to use it as the focus for most of the games in a major way instead of being a side peripheral for a small list of games. ie: just a gimmick to base the console around.

this is an entire change in development thought.

^^^OKAY CALL ME IN TWO YEARS WHEN ALL THESE INNOVATIONS HAVE PAID OFF AND GAME DESIGNERS AREN'T LAZY SHITHEADS AND GAMERS STOP BUYING SHITTY REMAKES OF CHRONO TRIGGER AND THE PS3 HAS ROCKED THE WORLD FOREVER KILLZONE SUPREMACY.

i kind of hate these threads btw because the jackyl, its all pretty much up to your individual circumstance. do you really really care about online shit? the ps3 has free online stuff. can you actually afford to blow 500+ dollars in one go? if not, get a 360. the ps3 has a hell of a lot less going for it as far as games go, if for no other reason than that it's younger than the 360, but if you are all about FINAL FANTASY and MGS or whatever, don't let that stop you. I think both series have had the most disappointing releases ever as of late, but different strokes.

I just personally think the whole ITS ON PC TOO argument is pretty tired at this point because if thejackyl doesn't know that already telling him probably won't help since he clearly aint keeping up to date with PC games! w/e ps3 blows because it's way too much goddam money imho but nothing any of us say will matter or influence you because lord knows what REALLY will push you over the edge. SOULJA BOY REVIEWED BRAID AND SAID IT WAS BAD GET A PS3.

hahahaha that's true.

also you're always going to have bad stuff man, you know that, you should, there is still TERRIBLE stuff in the movie industry, but that doesn't mean it hasn't made any strides what-so-ever in the past 10+ years. You're still going to have lazy shit head game designers and gamers are still going to buy remakes of Chrono Trigger, bitch about Mother 3, and buy Mortal Kombat games, but it doesn't automagically make the innovations mean nothing.

My wife bought a PS3 because she likes spending her money on frivolous shit and it seems alright, it's also a decent blu-ray player and the movie rental selection on the playstation store is pretty good. Some of the downloadable games on the store are really fun too, getting high and drinking while playing Echochrome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew7L0FlrMu8) is a favorite after-work activity among me my buddies right now. I personally like the types of games exclusive to the PS3 like MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet. Xbox didn't really have anything on it that appealed to me, I can pirate all the neat games like Bioshock and MassEffect on the PC and I don't care about Halo.

I think that the PS3 is a more interesting piece of hardware and feels a little more like a multimedia center than just a game console. It's also a lot easier and cheaper to upgrade/swap harddrives, you can get a 320GB drive in there for less than you'd pay for a 120GB Xbox drive.

PS3 has/will have some neat games for it, but you can't go wrong with the 360. It's got a huge library already and some great Live Arcade games too. But either way, you'll have good stuff to play since a ton of games this generation are multiplatform between the 360 and PS3 (you're only SOL if you get a Wii because many of the big ticket titles are watered down/not released on the Wii.)

I recently spent 500$ building a computer that can run shit like Crysis at very high settings with 1280x1024 resolution (my monitors max) and i have no idea why i ever bought any console from this generation.  aside from the wii (which isn't worth owning unless you hate video games or you're 80 years old) there's like 3 exclusive games on each system.

Crysis is still used by the "professional reviewers" as the standard benchmark test outside of 3dmark.  Crytek built the engine knowing that no commercial graphics card in 2007 could handle it and even the latest cards barely run the thing at 40fps with all the settings turned up.
