Title: Fracture (360)
Post by: Nigel on September 21, 2008, 04:20:09 am
Did anyone else play the demo yet?
honestly, i would have believed the game was made by valve if i didn't know it was lucasarts. i think it has a lot of potential just based on the gameplay elements available in the demo- terrain manipulation, destructible environments... definitely thinking about buying it when it comes out

Didn't even know the demo was out.. I'll get it tomorrow. Also this is most likely on the PSN as well just in case the topic title fooled anyone.

The dumb AI guy walking but not moving anywhere was pretty bad. Plus the enemies just in general seemed pretty dumb.

the terrain shit looks sweet but jesus christ the ai

no way im gonna get this if the ai is that bad. the demo seems really STALE too, like it seems it's supposed to be a war but it's just OPEN TERRAIN AND A SOLDIER IN A CORNER or something like that.

sucks when games have awesome gameplay elements but are shitty otherwise :(

edit: i mean christ, GOLDENEYE had better AI than this

I played the demo on 360 and found myself pretty bored, pretty quickly. I think the terrain changing element might make for some interesting multiplayer, but in single player, it just seems to be used for crappy puzzles and making your own cover.

I saw previews (interviews whatever) back a few months ago on tv

and I figured appart from watching the ground pop up a few times it'd be a very bland game

am i right

Nice, that terrain thing looks neat.

honestly i only tend to get shooters for the multiplayer, so with any luck it will have more awesome shit in it, but the terrain gun and grenades alone look like a lot of fun

The only saving factor I can see in this is terrain alteration in multiplayer combat. The demo itself was extremely stale even on the hardest difficulty... Lucas Arts trys to be innovative but in the end they'll make a great system for a game that will only take 4 hours to play through.

That terrain thing reminds me of a demo that came with dark basic classic where you drove a tank around and the projectiles would deform the ground.

Lucasarts has become incredibly lazy this generation (like post 2005).  Even their ps2 era Star Wars games were more polished than this.  It's nice to see new things being explored but when it's built around a shitty game it ends up being a poor gimmick that someone else will end up using better.

Haha let me DEFLATE THE GROUND to get through this level

Edit: Also same sound effect from the original Goldeneye

Effecting the terrain is a cool feature but it reuses the rebounding shield system practically started in halo but then reused in a thousand other games following it. Plus, the AI is pants-over-head retarded but at least they shoot and flank you and the AI is a bit smarter than mercenaries 2's dumb AI but that is still not saying much. Fun game but it will probably get lost and forgotten in the oncoming wave of fall shooters which is not suprising

Man I don't subscribe to Penny Arcade humour but I went there the other day to see if they had any comments on the Jack Thompson disbarring, and found a comic on the subject of Fracture and it's sort of true. While I enjoy DYNAMIC DEFORMATION/ALTERATION like Portal and Red Faction and shit, this is an incredibly lame gimmick. WHOO I CAN RAISE/LOWER GROUND. it's like a fucking tool in a map editor except YOU GET TO DO IT ON THE FLY WOOOOOOO. I could do this in Sim City 2000 man. I know the cool gimmicks have been spoken for but still, this is just so LAME. Lame is the best word for it. Just DULL.

I don't want to sound like a dick but yeah. if the game looked promising as a shooter, this would probably be an OK addition, but is rather seems like a completely average shooter that will tote gimmicky terrain modification as its star feature.
