Title: What creeps you out?

What kind of things creep you out? Whether it is a phobia you have, a picture, sound, anything that creeps you out! Tell about it, and try to show it, too. I'll start out with a picture that I suppose is normal to most, but I find it creepy looking.

The other thing that creeps me out, probably more than anything, is the "Unsolved Mysteries" TV show theme song.
Robert Stack's(RIP) creepy voice doesn't help matters much.

Lol. Seriously. Then the string progression they play in the backgrounds of their stories doesn't help either.

Heights, Water, and Spiders.

By water, I mean swimming, drowning, and such.  Spiders scare the fuck out of me for some reason, and heights, well...  I don't like not touching the ground

I don't think that I have any phobias of snakes or spiders or stuff like that, but I
get really freaked out by people who you think you know that suddenly show a
very different side of themselves.

For example;
There's this guy at work, k? He's like pretty stupid, but always nice to everyone. Once
he told me he'd like to blow up the whole working place and laughed his nerdy kind laughter.
There was something in his way of saying it and his expression that gave me this feeling that
if he had the chance, he'd most likely do it. That was a very creepy feeling.

water i can't see the bottom of, i'm like a fucking dog. even in video games it creeps me, something could come out of no where and swallow me alive or bite me and half, or just plain drag me down a thousand feet to the bottom of the ocean.

man that would be so sweet if in something random like gta if you get too far out in the ocean on your boat or while swimming you end up getting attacked by a kraken and dragged down until you run out of air.

Creeps me out just seeing middle-aged men in the mall sitting by themselves and watching young girls walk by and smirking.  I've seen this a lot and I can usually pinpoint a few key features that give them away, too.

But besides that, people I see walking alone in the dark freak me out. Or, walking alone at night outside on the streets, when I'm driving by.

Fold-out couches (sofas if you are a "sofa" person)  freak the shit out of me. I'd tell you why, but that's a story for another day.

Also, now that you all think I'm weird, I'll give you some normal freakouts of mine: Spiders, sometimes. Um, I dunno what else. We don't have much freaky shit in NZ. Oh yeah, cars coming towards me too fast (Some dude ran a red light once and I got completely owned, skin ripped off my legs and everything :S).

The basement levels of The 7th Guest made me horribly afraid of small, narrow basements with no windows as a child (and they still freak me out, luckily that's not something I am ever in).

Also I can't stand missing finger or toe nails.  It CREEPS ME OUT LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS and I don't know why.

I think I should mention that I used to be deathly afraid of thunderstorms. Like, you know that lightening you see in the distance, usually in the Summer? I would see one flash of lightening, then I'd run and lay down scared. Also, heights, but a lot of people don't like heights.

I thought I posted last night? Oh well.

Corners are what scare me. I am very afraid of corners and doors open behind me. Any noise from around a corner or behind me will make me jump and look and try to ascertain(??) what it was. Now, take light out of the picture, and I will not even BLINK without somebody else near me.

One time I was at my dads house, and needed to get my contacts out of the bathroom. Well, the bathroom is upstairs, and the lights were all off up there, so it was all creepy just looking up. I tried going up myself, and just turn on the stairs light and the hall light, but when I looked into my bedroom or down the hall into my dad's room it was just pitch black and scary as all geddup, so I run downstairs, into the computer room where my little brother is playing WoW, and demand he goes upstairs ahead of me and keeps guard while I grab my contacts and rush down stairs again. Sure, grabbing my contacts and fleeing only took 3 seconds, but I just couldn't do it because of the air of oppressiveness and fear up there. :( :( :(

Hey now, what. I am also really creeped out by deep-sea critters. Whenever I see, like, lobsters or prawns and shit in those huge tanks in fish stores/chinese restaurants and shit, a massive tingle always runs up my spine. Is it their beady eyes? Their weird little pincers? Hell if I know, but the genuinely creep the shit out of me.

I am phobic of vomit.  Since I live in a college town, I have to deal with it all the time.  It's so ridiculous how much puke is always on the sidewalk or on my car or something and seeing vomit makes me shiver.

I am also phobic of groups of young men walking around together.  This is because I was savagely mugged by a group of teenagers and now I am always afraid that groups of teenagers will beat me up with a baseball bat again.  The muggers were black and I am not sure if I am especially afraid of black teenagers or not.

People driving by when I'm walking alone at night outside in the streets... if you get my drift. Seriously, unidentifiable car drivers are scary as hell. Please stop doing that.

In other news, I don't so much have phobias, I'm just an all-round easily frightened person. Generally, all my fears fall into the "I'd really rather not get eaten, please" range. I'm afraid of stalkers, hungry lions and similar predators, dangerous criminals, poisonous animals, unsafe heights, very turbulent water and brandished weapons, to name a few.

Mostly what freaks me out is the undersea. Its a whole different world down there, one that we were not meant to experience or survive in, and the terrain and environment is so alien to the modern human that it might as well be a different planet. Not to mention all the goobaly woobaly tentacular things that exist down there...

I really don't like millipedes either.

I figured I'd elaborate on my fears a bit more than just listing them.  My fear of water stems beyond "I can't swim, if I can't touch bottom I panic", but an all out phobia of deep water.

As some of you may remember from the death topic a while back, I have nearly drowned about 6 times in my life, and so I'm afraid of water and can't be taught to swim.  If the water is higher than my armpits I freak out (so...  5' deep water I panic), and there are some game I can't beat because of this fear.  I'll list some I can recall right away.

Seriously, the last person to attempt to teach me to swim told me I have an irrational fear of deep water, and that I need to get over it.  Theres a reason I can't get over the fear, it's an IRRATIONAL fear

im actually creeped out by deep water too, but it needs to be a VERY SPECIFIC TYPE. its actually deep water with sheer walls. only three games have done this that ive played, and i havent come across it in real life yet so idk how id react to it there:

- that bit in Oblivion thejackyl said, the giant slaughterfish is at the bottom of a very long well like drop
- WoW's oceans suddenly BOTTOM OUT when you get far out to sea, that creeps me out
- i found this one yesterday: the edge of the map in Garry's Mod Flatgrass2008 map. literally sheer drop with no visiblity in the water, i BRAVED MY FEARS tho and found the bottom is only like 5 seconds swim away.

I can play games with deep water, it's just I have a really bad feeling of unease when I enter those area.  In fact, I have played most of those games past the deep water areas, but I still feel uneasy about playing those area.

Oh, another game that freaks me out: Half-Life, the multiple underwater areas that contain those shark-mutant things, that make a weird noise when they charge...those things make me hate the underwater areas in that game.

yeah if I see or hear someone vomiting I usually at least gag a little bit

well that's nice you obviously don't know how good i am at lying.

sea mammals aren't creepy, it's every other thing. i went on a deep sea fishing trip and that's how i found out i really don't like sea things! the boat floor was covered in sea slaters, these giant trillobite things, and then the fish themselves were frightening.

I'm afraid of snakes and heights.  I tend panic whenever I'm anywhere near a snake.   Which is bad for the snake, because it means he's about to get his head bashed in with the nearest blunt object.

 As for heights, it seems they only effect me when I'm out in the open.  I tend to get dizzy and start to worry about falling off of whatever I'm on.  If I'm on an airplane though I have no fear of them, and actually enjoy looking out the window.  That strikes me as totally fucking weird.

Yeah it is. When I used to do ambience themes, I always used it because it's good for building suspense. It's used a lot in horror movies for that reason. ;)

Or when you RUB THE PAPER TOWEL AGAINST YOUR EAR REAL SLOWLIKE. You should also try it with 1-ply toilet paper. Gets stuck in your ears and is freaking annoying.

I don't like a lot of things. I take off my glasses before I go to bed, and I see all these bullshit figures MOVING AROUND in my room, esp. when I'm half asleep, because then they turn into stuff and tend to EAT ME or something. Fricking hell. Hate heights too, with a passion, although I don't mind being on rollercoasters (well, that was before Final Destination III).  Also, I don't like walking on the left side of a road (or the right, for you Europeans) -- don't like the oncoming cars (developed a phobia after flipping signs on the sides of roads. And hitting people's cars. But that was only once).

Speaking of which, I also hate walking across a crosswalk when a car is about to turn and the dumbass driver ISN'T LOOKING at me, but in the other direction. I also hate swimming -- we were given two feet, and not flippers, for a reason. I also don't like guns. Don't mind playing videogames, but if I'm around a real gun I can hardly stand the sight of it. I used to have a roommate who was in the military and brought home a sub-machine gun, a couple of supposedly "dead" GRENADES, and this fricking huge rifle. And he puts them ALL right on the dining room table. What if the damn cat pulled one of the pins on the grenades or something, geez?

But what freaks me out most of all are those pictures of those stupid deformed newborn babies with red eyes and..freaky...whatever I havne't even looked at one long enough to know what the thing looks like, that's how fricking scary they are. If my wife had one of those suckers I owuld seriously have to go to the psychiatrist or something. Holy mother of shit, I've got shivers just thinking about htem.

The plane thing is the same for me, but even if I'm on a rollercoaster or inside somewhere and looking down, I get really afraid. It's only on planes that I don't, and am instead very interested in looking out.

I'm also oddly afraid of when I'm walking near a car, for the car to run over a small object or rock and have it go flying at me.

I like swimming, but not when it's deep. I like to be able to touch the floor.  I'm afraid of a lot of other things too.

I'm not good with things around my neck. Shirts and collars are OK, of course, but TIGHT stuff is awful. I can't wear ties or anything, and I hate it when people's hands are wrapped around my throat. After a short time I usually start gagging, regardless of pressure.

Oh and a weird one: you know those cotton ball things? They're fine to see, but I CANNOT stand the texture. It makes me shudder.

Silk does the same thing to me that cotton balls do to you.  A few other fabrics do that too, but most of them are somewhere near silk.  It kind of makes my teeth hurt to feel them and I don't get why.

also Sim Ant scared the hell out of me, with the fucking spider that takes up half the screen and then if you die you hear little cute ant noises as it's chomped to death :( and like, the sound of antennae snapping. That eel from SM64 was pretty creepy too

the only problem is that the first part of your post contradicts the second part of your post because i loved sim ant (although the spider was not ENJOYABLE it didn't freak me out)

oh man, one time I took a little speedboat out to lake yellowstone and we went out way in the middle of it. it took us like an hour to get where this happened, so we were pretty fucking isolated which had to do a lot with why I freaked. so anyway we got close to this huge island and the lake started getting shallower.. maybe to about 50 feet deep or some shit. the problem was that the water is so fucking crystal clear you can see all the way to the bottom in great detail at that depth. and there was some cutthroat trout way down there at the bottom that was bigger than our boat and that just freaked the living fuck outta me. I grabbed control of the boat and got the fuck out of there.

The first few years of Jonbenet Ramsey's disappearance, I was scared to death to look at her picture. Her picture would scare me for some reason. As a matter of fact, anytime I see "Missing person, have you seen them?" on TV, it's a little scary. I feel like that person is going to appear at my window or something.

I'm really claustrophobic and I'm not exactly sure why, it's just always been like that. I used to be scared of heights but I'm not too bad nowadays (barring planes which are ffffff). It's strange because I've always loved jumping off really high places into water.

I have a real fear of wide open spaces - I'm not sure what it is because there's nothing really scary, it just makes my heart race and I feel a bit dizzy. Kind of like vertigo except from looking out in the open rather than looking up or down or whatev. It sucks because I go out to the country with friends quite a bit and I always get uncomfortable nowadays. It only really started earlier this year.

Apart from that I'm not too bad. I'm generally a pretty anxious person but apart from those things nothing really bothers me too much. I've never had a problem with spiders or snakes (I used to live in the bushy area of Queensland so there were heaps of both around) or any animals generally considered 'scary'.

Well, the picture looks like two camel spiders...one holding onto the other one. I tend to kill spiders unless I know them to be 100% non venomous. Phiddipus Regius are fine by me (sp).

The water thing - that is me also, but for some reason more so in video games then in real life. Even back in Jedi Knight days, I'd put in a cheat code whenever Katarn had to swim around, especially that section with the water cycs and the cylindrical "puzzle" on Sulon, because that drowning sound effect and the whole concept just got to me.

Actually they both arn't fake, that "bite" one is just totally unrelated to the Camel Spider. To be honest only jumping spiders get to me.

Another fact, Camel Spiders are not spiders. They are Solifugae, which is an Arachnid but not a spider.

EDIT: That Bite picture is from a spider, the Brown Recluse Spider ussually it wouldn't be that bad unless you don't get it treated which is mandatory when bitten by them.

I am not scared at all about things COMING FROM THE WATER but I am scared of water I can't see the bottom of. Even water I can see the bottom of, if the bottom is murky enough. I am pretty s-m-r-t and I know what is IN the water (maybe not the ocean but I am like 99% sure about the stuff in the lake at my cottage) and that doesn't freak me out, but for some reason I just can't go into water unless it is really shallow or a pool or something.

What I am really terrified of is when I am out in the boat and I see things just under the water. God damn that scares the shit out of me. That is pretty much it! I'm a little bit scared of the dark too but only if there is a bit of light to cast spooky shadows and shit. I guess I'm afraid of the unknown!

Oh, and fucking centipedes. JESUS CHRIST THEY ARE SO CREEPY!

you realise it's not a topic about phobias or scary shit, but just things that creep you out. and hell, I'm certainly not afraid of cotton, sheesh. but the texture of cotton balls genuinely IS awful to me. I think that qualifies as "creeping me out."
the same applies to things around my neck since I get sick/nervous from them! given that most people wear ties with ease, it's just one thing I find particularly bad. my mother is the same. again, it's probably no phobia, just a problem we have.

Knives creep me out.  Maybe I've watched too many slasher movies but every time I see a knife, I imagine something REALLY bad like in Happy Tree Friends is going to happen and the knife will end up stabbing me in my stomach.

Height also creeps me out. And scissors too...most of the time when I see it I cannot stop thinking that some accident will happen and it'll cut off my penis. I know it stupid, but when this happen I have to take scissors away from my sight or I'm gonna go insane.

With all the talk about fear of water, and even fear of video game water levels, some of you would have never braved the Sewer level in Shadows of the Empire for 64.  That shit was damn creepy.  The whole level is dark as shit, and there are constant nasty pipes you have to swim through.  That was nothing, though, because you'd encounter the hellish DIANOGA, which you could hear fucking screaming from a mile away before it swam fast as fuck up to you and started whipping you with it's seven penises tentacles.



In case that didn't make you shit your pants, the end of the level had you thrust in this water-filled chamber with a goddamn GIANT dianoga trying to drag you into its mouth as you shoot off its tentacles whilst trying to swim around on the surface.

Now that I think of it, that whole game was pretty delightfully scary.  It's like fucking everything is out to get you.  If it isn't some trooper jumping out from a random dark corner, it's some freakish hellbeast or death-robot complete with creepy sound effects.  I remember the IG-88 battle giving me goosebumps because that motherfucker would jump out and start babbling, obviously possessed by Satan.  Also, opening the Wampaa (?) cages in the Hoth level before running like a pansy because those guys took like a hundred shots to kill.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the 64 was FUCKING AWESOME. Also, yes, I do remember that boss. He was rather large and creepy, but awesome. I remember the last boss, it was Xizor's droid.

EDIT: Playing Perfect Dark 1v1 against a Perfect or Dark sim with no radar is also creepy.

That's pretty cute, actually.  What's creepy is when you have a standard earthworm and poke it or something, they start wriggling and whipping their body around really fast, like the tentacles on The Thing.  I hate to think about one of those crawling in my stomach and doing that.

edit: Okay, just noticed his "attack", pretty weird, but kind of cool like "String Shot" attack on Pokemon.

Enviroment is also a heavy factor involving "rational" fears (except needles, it is pointy and sharp so it would take experience taking a needle to not be scared). I know there's nothing at the bottom of an Ontario lake. Yet, when I was a kid, one of my scout leaders caught one of those long baracoda fish or whatever it was called (long, thin, nasty ass crocodile-like mouth) and yeah. Since then I always get this chill or sinking feeling. You never know what your feet brush against, and it creeps me out. Then of course, the ocean we don't KNOW what's there. We assume we know, because we're scientific. And yes, I understand it's a purely irrational fear. I'm fine when with someone, or out past the beach or whatever. But I'd hate to be stranded in the middle of the ocean. That fucking Mountain Dew comercial annoyed me too. There was some dude canoeing across some water, and he cracks open a mountain dew---and this big freakin' whale/seacreature crashed out of the water and gulps the motherfucker down like a pill.

yeah dude i think most people are looking at different definitions of creeped out here. some are going for fear, but shit like the texture of cotton balls is unpleasant for me. and i see "creeped out" as being a good enough description of how i feel about that thing.

also cotton balls in someone's mouth would be gross no matter who you are.

Spiders for the most part, especially the kind that are so big that there are times they seem to fall off the wall, but before falling it's like they hang on by one or two legs for half a second.  Creepy, in the sense, that it's too damn big to be falling off walls and it must die as soon as possible if it's in my house.

Other than that, there is the girl at work that can make this wavy, undulating motion with her thighs with the muscles under her skin by flexing and unflexing in some weird manner.  It looks so... unnatural.

in relation to the video game thing i wouldn't say i get scared or even very creeped out, mainly just tense, or cautious idk. "fuck some things gonna pop out of the fucking depths of the ocean and kill me". but in a real life setting its definitely scary for me, partly because i didn't learn to swim until my late teens, and even now i'm not a very good swimmer, so it only adds to my uneasiness.

but man i can take a needle in the arm, or even the neck like nobody's business.

Dude the Eel in Mario 64 used to scare the bajeezuz out of me.  I simply refused to play that level Jolly Roger Bay at all, I'd just collect enough stars to avoid it completely.

That thing was fucking scary, and 3D 360 vg graphics were new to me.  Also I'm afraid of large bodies of water... any game that has them, that you can access, I'm always just like "jesus what if a shark just comes up and nails me."  If it was quick enough, graphics are good enough these days that a shark attack in a first person VG would be absolutely terrifying.

To clarify a bit more about what I said  about being afraid of underwater levels in video games:

I'm not necessarily AFRAID of those levels, but those areas give me a huge feeling of unease, and I'm afraid of water in real life because I've nearly drowned 6 more times than I should have. (I've nearly drowned 6 times)  So I think that's part of it.

I can still play games with the huge underwater areas, but I have this weird feeling whenever I have to go through one of those areas.  The only game that I actually bypass the underwater area is Oblivion.  The giant fish...  well, I can't tell if its the wall, or if its the fish until it's too fucking late, and is already attacking me (I think it's more the suddeness, than it is the whole underwater, but still).

Yeah, it's not really fear, but a severe feeling of unease.

I'd only get that feeling if the underwater level is say really dark deep water or dirty water where can't see anything more then three to four feet in front of you (in game terms). Seriously if someone could perfectly imitate dirty water and make an entire underwater level out of it i'd garruntee it renown.

Sure it's 2D, and the whole 3 to 4 feet vision cutoff is due to the limited screen size.  But it nailed the whole dark and dirty, and genuinely creepy aspect perfectly.

I used to be get pretty freaked out while being high up.

Like, I couldn't walk along a high bridge without getting scared as shit when I was younger. Thankfully my time at sea has gotten me over it for the most part though.

Crawling up masts and on top of mounted lifeboats that sway a little bit when you're working on em' can be a bitch

I'm also pretty wary about flying. Mostly because of the fact that its out of my control though. I can jump ship if shit gets too rough and atleast I've got a CHANCE at living but if a plane goes down you're pretty much fucked.

Cockroaches scare me half to death.  I can't even look at pictures of them without chills going down my spine.  When Orkin ran those commercials with the cockroach that crawled across the screen like it was ON the television, I flipped every time.  I'm definitely the person that has to stand on the furniture and shout for someone else to kill it.  I'm creeped out, but to a lesser degree, by any insect that can fly or run fast, as well as spiders that run fast whether or not I know them to be venomous.

Small dark places creep me out because I'm claustrophobic.  My friends tease me because I'm afraid of elevators.  I cram myself into the corner as soon as I get in and death grip the handrails, expecting to plummet at any minute.

Also, because I get very immersed in video games, I can't play scary games without someone in the room with me and all the lights on.  I've managed to complete the Silent Hill games I have, but I can't make it through Fatal Frame. >.<

Coxswain you do realise that public airplanes don't drop like a rock right? Unless the wings are somehow badly damaged or the pilots don't know what they're doing it's safer to stay on the plane because those big planes rely on the air to keep em' up there, and if the pilots are good enough can do a crash landing by keeping the angle just right. Not jet planes though, they rely purly on propulsion for their lift, so if somethings wrong then yeah your gone.

You're more likely to survive a plane crash if you are in the: front, back, or middle of a plane. From what i've read, 2/3 of people in a plane crash survive. Some studies have reported 90% in a certain time period. The ones that did die, mostly died from smoke/fire and if you read an article about "Surviving Plane Crashes" or something then you can increase your odds of coming out alive.

Still, a plane crash would be a very scary experience!

I used to be afraid of heights as a kid. Not now however. I was not afraid of being high up in a plane, since it's 'enclosed' if you know mean. If it was a bi-plane with no roof etc. it would freak me out. Like the top of a 100m cliff would freak the shit out of me, but in a plane at 30,000 ft, no biggie. Same goes for elevators, i was never really afraid of them, but standing for a second at the top of a flight a stairs... hoooly shit.

Speaking of creepy shit and cats I had to dissect one in HS and they have this really strong distinct smell with the formaldehyde pumped in them and it made me sick to my stomach I was smelling formaldehyded cat for a few days on and off.
