Title: RIP Toonami (1997-2008)
Post by: Kitsune Inferno on September 23, 2008, 04:31:29 pm
For those of you who don't know. Our childhood has been officially erased. Cartoon Network cancelled Toonami as of last Saturday. Even though it's been nothing but shit after they took One Piece off the air, it still holds a place in my heart as the ONLY thing I watched in my younger years.

Discuss. Glad it's gone? BAWWW that it's gone? Remember fond moments?

when did dbz finish in america?  like 2000? should've ended 8 years ago.

This.

DBZ was the most awful anime I have watched. The animation and art style was absolute shit and the story was staler than fuck.

Well maybe if you watched DBZ when you were 8-12 like you were supposed to!

And don't tell me you did, because nobody would notice a shitty story and terrible animation/art style when they're 8-12. Unless they are some kind of super anime conneissuer(don't know how to spell that shit).

It's your fault for not watching DBZ at the appropriate age.

My friends got into DBZ when we were 17. I never saw the appeal other than rather muscly men ripping their clothes off and grunting like a T rex engaging in coitus with a military frigate.

Only one anime has ever really interested me and that was Cowboy Bebop. I think I am too old to appreciate it now.

Toonami went from having teenage anime to having kiddish anime like the butchered english dub of naruto. I missed the old days where cool anime like Gundam Wing, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, and Gundam Seed(i wish they finished some of these that were mentioned). They just went downhill after that, and the only time it truly shined recently was when they aired the funimation dub of one piece but due to "explicit language" and what not, they removed it. I think it should take a nap, but the reason they shut it down was because they ran out of shows. Here would be my solution: Put shows from Toonami Jetstream like Mar(they did have that on air for a little while) or Eye Shield on your show making the excuse of "running out of anime" bullshit.

Did toonami do pick up that lame one piece show? They should've just redone dbz, outlaw star (which was actually pretty good), and one of those gundam shows in all there anime slots for all 11 years instead putting crappy shows like that up.

For all intents and purposes, yes, One Piece dub WAS crappy, up until its 105th episode, when it became one of the best dubs I ever watched. I strongly dislike FUNimation's VA pool (all too stuck up on the "DBZ is god" bandwagon), but they actually pulled off something that was magical. Too bad CN cancelled it after 24 measly episodes. :(

We didn't even have toonami here, just the local TV station which has a "children's time" from 4pm to 5.30pm" and showed various stuff like Zeta project, Batman, Superman, Justice League, Reboot etc, and back in the day other stuff too, like all those kids stuff like barney or sesame street whatever.

Although, I haven't watched TV in such a long time, I dunno if they still show that stuff. So yeah, it never really showed so I guess I can''t miss it :\

Cowboy Bebop never hit toonami, did it? Adult Swim, yes, but never toonami.
What about that ronin warriors show? Whenever I think back to watching it, I didn't like it at all, but I also realize I had no taste when I was younger, so maybe it was a really good show?

Also Cyborg 009 or Cyborg #9 or whatever. That show was AWESOME. Two drunk robots fighting and army of MAGIC ROBOT KILLING BEES? How can that not be good?

yeah tenchi muyo is one of those typical harem things where all these girls want the main character for some reason, but the guy's gay or impotent or something so they just scare him. it had battles and futuristic stuff too tho and I remember liking it back when it came out.

Outlaw Star was ok but it was just such a proto-Cowboy Bebop

it was made by the same writer/artist right? I think the same person was responsible for a lot of decent animes, like The Big O too I think

also I vaguely remember some anime called Ronin Warriors, was that any good?

Edit: Oh they all came from Sunrise Studio, I thought it was the same director though. Shinichiro Watanabe is the Cowboy Bebop guy

big o was good.  i never really watched it but it seemed cool and it had that quality of not being like actual anime which is basically required for me to watch something.  bort once told me that adult swim like FINANCED IT after the first season and i always thought that was p cool.  i dug the fact that they didnt overplay the whole mystery thing (not that i recall, anyway), and it seemed more western (specifically, like batman or something) than anything else.  maybe i will download it.

Yeah, the second season financed by Cartoon Network was pretty awful. Multiply said awful by eight hundred if you hate anime. The first season was quite good, however.

if you dont sit through more than an episode, i think thats the impression.
after that theres a bunch of star wars-esque plot with lightsabers and galaxy cops and stuff.

also, big O is my least favorite toonami show of all time. I really appreciate the theme song being so bad, because every time I hear it, it's like a warning siren telling me to change the channel.

Well new Naruto eps are still being shown on CN for now so I don't care about the rest atm.

Yeah, I'd be much more willing to blame Spongebob for FlapJack than I would One Piece. (I can gurantee that's the reason the CN execs put the show into existance. Anyone should be able to see that.)

Maybe if Flapjack had more of a competivive spirit, or started beating people up when faced with a problem, I'd be more willing to tie it to One Peice specifically. Although technically, all three can be lumped together in a general sense.
