Title: Are we getting old?
Post by: Albax11 on September 27, 2008, 02:12:20 am
Now, after having lived for two decades, nothing can make me quite as old as rekindling an old hobby (In this case playing and tinkering with RPGMaker games, mostly 2k/3) I discover that most of the games I liked to play are gone... they've vanished off the face of the internet. I was able to find A Blurred Line, but no others. I also discover to my horror that GW.net is a blog, RPG-advocate is shut down, and most of the sites in between are either full of dead links, or dead themselves.

I can admit to some extent that The RPGmaker programs were a fad, yes. But there are alot of games that I have saved ages ago, but have been lost in HDDwipes.

I'll mention a few.

There was one Final Fantasy Fan game that was actually GOOD, it ran as a standalone game.

Another was a game were you were a female pilot, I don't remember if she was actually the captain or not, but I digress. What happens is that they crashland on a very pseudo medieval planet and stuff starts getting interesting. I think it was called Extrenia, but I really don' t recall.

There was another one that was linked on RPG Advocate's page for ages, which I remember had very impressive Facesets. Seriously! Like every character. Battles were a bit boring though, so I never finished it. I think it was a 2k game, which was even more impressive all things considered.

You know what I would really like? For nostalgic purposes, I'd like someone to round up their old games/Resources/Whatever collection of the old 2000 and 2k3 stuff. You know? So that it isn't forever lost in the depths of the internet. It needs to be saved SOMEWHERE.

I suppose a part of me is clinging to this particular point in my life... but I remember how happy RM2k made me. And I miss it. Alot. I mean, heck, they weren't the best games in the world, but some of them were really good!

Anyways, Sorry about the rantathon. If you'd like to chip in, I'd appreciate it. Now I'ma nip off to bed.

It's already been done. (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=7766.0) Also that FF game your probably speaking off is Endless Nova. As for that other game.. It's very common nowadays for people to have Face Sets for certain characters but I do remember a list on Phylomortis on the top right side. One was A Blurred Line, the other was.. Messiah or something I don't know. I think you may be talking about that game but I'm not really sure sorry.

Yeah, Endless Nova is probably what you're thinking of. You're dead right with Extrenia, too; I've got that lying around on an old hard drive....... somewhere. That was an excellent game though!

Isn't their another guy making a game with the same name here. I'm pretty sure I saw someone post something with Extrenia as the title.

Edit - No wait I'm thinking of Excalista.

Wow, thank you guys for the replies... I had no idea there was an actual thread for this kinda stuff. *goes crazy with the downloads*

And yes, I meant Extrenia. I'm suprised how few sites are still alive with rm2k/3 resources and games.  I still can't remember which one that Phylomortis site was. The one aside from Extrenia and ABL.

A blurred line is still effing sexy though, I sure hope Lysander finishes Line's End so his fans get some closure.

Well, having spent six years of my life on GW, putting that in perspective can make you feel old, let alone those who have been here a few years longer.  I haven't played an RM2k game in a while although I played quite a few "back in the day."  Some of my favorites being Erave's Easy Mac series, The Frozen World, The Way, In the Name of the Rose, Naufragar, Demon Blade (though I only ever played the demos, if there is a full game now I may need to jump back in) and this one horror based game for a halloween contest some years ago, forgot what it was called but either Marcus or DrFunk made it.

I have been making games all my life but I only joined here in 2006 when I played ABL and Iron Gaia and I really wanted to make my own science fiction game. As time has gone on my focus has shifted more towards the technology behind making games. I have become more of a coder than a writer.

When you reach university your career (really should) take centre stage and become the thing you practise and think about the most which is why I've been putting game creation on the backburner ever since going to uni 2 years ago. So I don't think it's necessarily age but change in intensity of your primary occupation that pushes it aside.

I know a few mature gamers, my dad likes to play Red Alert 2 a lot and my boss last year had every next gen console because he was stinking rich. Work has gotta come before play though and I sure learnt that the hard way.

I could make a long-winded reply, but I'll just say this instead:
The internet rolls over new content continuously, and in a matter of years to old is gone, the new is here, and you feel old for wanting games made a few years back. No, we're not old. If it's only been two decades for you, then especially no.

I'm going to have to thank you all for linking me back to these games, I'ma have a lot of fun with it. It's still incredible how much of an impact ABL did.

It almost makes me want to put together my own little game.
