Title: Gimme your remedies
Post by: Carrion Crow on September 29, 2008, 04:30:22 pm
Alright sausages,

I went and got myself the freshers' flu and now I have a sore throat, bad cough and a nose that runs like the river Mersey.

Do any of you have any interesting remedies for when you get all ill and snot everywhere?

Tasty huh!

If you're coughing a lot, apparently a good thing to do is rub some vick's vapo-rub on your feet and put socks on. I have no idea how it works, but it certainly does a treat.

See with me that would just result in a rancid minty smell.

So far I have had ibuprofen, shitty lemsip (wtf shitty), coke, a kebab, some potato cakes, several cups of tea and an elixir but I am still snotting like nothing on earth.

I could put a buttplug up each nostril if I owned any. Someone paypal me money for buttplgus

Sleep, tea and getting a grip.

I have a grip boy - climbing society innit.

I am on my 5th cup of tea. The bogies have begun to get thicker, like jelly setting. An episode of traffic cops eases my sore head.

I am going to read in my bed and revise phasors.

PHaaaaaasorrrrs.

Drink plenty of water or juice, eat some soup, use cough drops (do this do this do this), take hot showers, be gentle about blowing your nose so as not to irritate the inside of it.

chicken noodle soup, relax, etc. etc.

if you use any decongestant spray don;t use it too often because it can make it worse.

Try making a hot drink of ginger, honey, and lemon and drink it for your cough :)  Licorice has been used for awhile to soothe chest and throat pains.  You could try taking Ginger and Garlic since they both have antiviral properties (garlic the best).  Also, Peppermint may help because it supposedly helps reduce body temperature.

like what dok said, at a lot of grocery stores they have boxed tea that's a mix of chamomile, peppermint and some other stuff, drinking that with honey should help with the symptoms

or take alka seltzer

this is dangerous. earlier this year i discovered what i named "juice sickness." if you drink too much juice, apple or orange (it was orange with apple base, so the apples may be the cause), you will become 'juiced,' a sensation of being kicked in the balls and having stomach cramps. i think it only happens if you have more than a litre in a sitting.

i would be interested in other people that have suffered this horrible affliction

If you drink to much carrot juice (and I mean a lot) you will start to turn a tint of orange.

water is best to drink, i've always heard either water or juice but i don't like juice so i've not heard anything about this

but by "plenty of juice" i don't mean a RIDICULOUS AMOUNT, i mean just stay hydrated with either water or juice (or both)

i usually have sinus congestion instead of a runny nose (i'd RATHER have the runny nose to get that shit out of there, sinus pressure's the worst

Although the mechanisms aren't full understood, honey is excellent for sore throats and has strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. What you need to do is mix about a quarter of honey with boiling water and then add one or two tablespoons of pure lemon juice. Drink this slowly so the honey can stick to your throat.

i heard the phrase freshers flu today and i thought it just meant a hangover but weirdly me and another guy in my flat are kind of sickly today so i guess if it's actually a kind of flu you get cos you're in amongst a bunch of young folks then i guess i got it, too. it's going away though.

Luckily I packed some olbas oil. That stuff is so damn potent in hot water it makes your eyes burn. Now the right side of my head is free but it aches like a bitch and the left side is still an anvil.

I have been referred to see an ear, nose and throat specialist but it is on a uni day which is just a pain in the arse with this whole I RESOLVE NOT TO FAIL thing. I've been in bed since I last posted and I couldn't take the lying down like a snot fountain anymore.

Not getting laid all summer then falling ill during freshers week. What an utter pisstake!

Req goldenratio dressed as a nurse with hot ribena please.

haha yeah this happened to me when I did mescaline once, I had about a whole carton of OJ in the span of maybe an hour and I got so sick haha

cramps and farts were just the most pleasant of the things that happened to me

This, and you don't have to be naked.

Have you heard of a neti pot (http://www.himalayaninstitute.org/store/product/72e928d0-6895-4c53-8f8f-ee02fc0b0709.aspx)? Not sure if you have those in the UK, but they work quite well. If you can't find them there, I guess you could order one and use it in the future(they are great).

EDIT: Jesus christ, the one I linked you to is pricey. In the US, I can find them in a drugstore for about 10$-15$.

Large doses of vitamin C usually help me (around 1000 mg, which roughly equals 3.5 ounces). Effervescent tablets are most effective.

Vitamin C. I usually try to drink orange juice when I start to feel a bit sick to fight the sickness early. It works.
