Long ago in a galaxy far far away, a famous company created a game called King's Bounty for the NES, where you and your 10 trillion soldiers killed stuff in real time. It was then later made into the Heroes of Might & Magic series by the same company, and everyone forgot about King's Bounty while HOMM sold 102342904812903812983901283901839014904890189013 copies.
The license was purchased by the company that made Space Rangers (a B game that tried to be like 19 genres at the same time but was freaking amazing), and they've made a new sequel to the NES game, and it is fucking awesome and triple A material.
The game has an amazing graphical style (the title screen is really well drawn too!), uses RAM really well (if you have 2GB or more, expect like no load times!), and is real time RPG with turn based strategy combat.
If you've played HOMM, it's like that, except no insane micromanagement, but you're free to explore the massive map (with random stuff in it each game) in real time (unlike HOMM which is turn based.).
If you haven't played HOMM, picture an RPG where you control a gigantic army across a massive world instead of like 4 people.
There's a lot of funny quests, a massive world, no random encounters, battles have traps and treasure in them, tons of creatures to choose from in your party, character customization, a great Engrish story, 3 character classes to choose from, the ability to get married and have kids (that give you stuff), randomly generated world, bosses, and so much more. Plus you can totally get a zombie wife and ask her if she wants kids and she'll talk about eating it, and what's better than that, huh? (Plus it has a skill system like Diablo 2, and these spirits with powerful magic you can upgrade, and stuff like that.)
Here's some awesome screenshots:

I dunno what to say, except to try the demo out if you like this type of thing. The demo is massive, coming out at 3-5 hours for one playthrough, with the game being ~x10-15 times larger, with tons of replayability since it's random! Time seems to fly by when playing too, and it's really just solid, well made, fun, and it's different enough from HOMM to be a solid sequel to the King's Bounty series and take a new direction with it, without seeming like more of the same.
You can try out the updated demo here: http://www.worthdownloading.com/download.php?gid=1963&id=16403
You can buy the game online or in stores for 40$! (http://www.atari.com/us/games/kings_bounty_the_legend/dvd_rom)
Also the game has a crashing bug you can fix by downloading this: http://www.kbmods.nm.ru/eng/mod_16_eng_fix_mirabella.zip
Warning tho, this game does use SecuROM as DRM, so anyone who hates DRM should be wary and get the game from other means/avoid it!

This looks awesome! I remember playing HOMM2. I'll look into this. thanks =)
-
Yeah no problem, it's definitely up there with HOMM3 with the AB expansion quality, and if you're a HOMM fan you know how awesome that is, so.
It's snagging really good reviews! I also learned to take all the items off your wife and shit because she takes like 1/5th your gold and runs away with all the shit on her if you divorce just like real life! Even the zombie one does and it's a freaking zombie why is it stealing my monies! :(
the Fighter really seems to suck tho, maybe he gets better at the end but the Mage & Paladin seem to rock quite a lot.
-
Wow this seems great. I will definitely get the demo tonight!
-
yeah i've been playing this on and off for the past week but:
The license was purchased by the company that made Space Rangers (a B game that tried to be like 19 genres at the same time but was freaking amazing), and they've made a new sequel to the NES game, and it is fucking awesome and triple A material.
i didn't know it came from the same company (and this is coming from a guy who looooved space rangers). It really is a fun game; it's really simple yet deep but not overly complicated... eh, it reminds me of Age of Wonders, another game that combined turn based strategy with city building. The dialog is intentionally laughably bad but unlike Space Rangers the game isn't riddled with bugs and this game is getting some really high reviews.
the Fighter really seems to suck tho, maybe he gets better at the end but the Mage & Paladin seem to rock quite a lot.
the mage. wow. the mage WOW. Rock everything by spamming fireball. the only bad thing about him is that, for whatever reason he gains more might runes than mind runes (how does this make sense???) and all of his skills require a smattering of both but mostly mind runes.
also, WHERE ARE THE PLUGENS??? i've skipped the quest for 10 hours because i only have 390 plugens and there's 10 of them stashed SOMEWHERE. i've defeated the bandits by the wagon and picked them up around the area but there's 10 of them just lurking somewhere URG
-
ya, well it's MOSTLY the same company, Elemental Games were remade into this one! they got a lot of financial backing this time around and it really shows.
also yeah the mage owns really hard, the paladin gets pretty good, and the fighter i haven't even bothered with past an hour.
Also the Black Hole rage Spirit spell. jesus. that spell owns everything.

If I'm thinking right it had a PS2 remake before? If so has the annoying time limit gone, I hate having a certain time limit to dash around the map and do stuff.

it did but it wasn't an official sequel or anything. also there's no time limits.
also this game is hard. and i'm on normal.
impossible must like uninstall the game or something.
-
Good to know the time limit's gone. I just installed HOMM 1 from the compendium disc I have.
Lo and behold, the MS-DOS Kings Bounty, I ain't gonna play, I hate the time limit with a vengence!
-
This looks awesome. I have one qualm with this game, however. I hate randomly generated enviroments, besides that it looks fine. I might check out the demo soon.
-
Well everything but the environment is randomly generated. The world map itself (and story) will always be the same, but items, monsters, shops, etc, will be different.
-
marcus have you found those 10 plugens yet i am in the same problem

Yes. Turns out it's right next to the windmill in that little town outside the main castle. I don't know how I missed it so many times before but sure enough it was there.
I think you get 300 plugens for defeating the bandits and then they're scattered along that eastern road and the last one is located near the free peasants going north off a little sidepath leading to the coast.
I'm currently getting my ass kicked in other places and wish the game wasn't so hard.
-
I downloaded the demo for this and played a bit of the tutorial. It's pretty decent so far I guess but I don't know how the real game is. I liked HOMM games a lot, so I will probably like this even more - I always thought HOMM would be better if it was a full-fledged RPG and not a half-RPG half-turnbased strategy.
-
I don't want to be a fucking TREASURE SEARCHER.
Other than that I do quite like this.
-
where do i get these creatures of rage? been playing 10 hours and still nothing. is it a scroll or spell?

do the king's quests, they're spirits which you use with rage and they level up and gain new abilities.

I probably should as I've done everything BUT the main quests.
No wonder these battles are so tough. I've mostly been winning by building up shock troops and pumping up their defenses with archmages while I toss fireballs and spinning blades around. I can know understand the appeal of the warrior because when I go up against an enemy with three troops containing 400+ enemies each it makes my 750 leadership look pitiful.
-
Graphics look very vivid and colorful. How is this game in co-op, if it has it?
-
It doesn't have any multiplayer because of it's mechanics, strictly focused on the single player experience, but it's REALLY good.
-
this game looks like it'll make me fail university.
-
So I got the demo based on your recommendation and I loved it. Before I knew it, the demo was over. It was pretty funny when the king was like, "I am sorry, but I can not give you any more quests because the demo version of King's Bounty does not go outside of this region".
I just bought it on Direct2Drive. Downloading now!
EDIT: Has anyone noticed that ATARI is basically the official publisher of PC rpgs? Basically every PC RPG I buy (The Witcher, this, Neverwinter Nights, etc) is published by them. It is sad to hear that they are having financial trouble because they are actually one of my favorite publishers now. :-\
-
I'm glad you enjoyed it mala! :D
Yeah ATARI is one of the bigger PC RPG developers, mostly because everyone else moved onto MMO's or other genres. Console RPG's seem to be more profitable atm.
-
Neato. I'm not much into ye olde fantasy... but this looks awesome. Definitely getting this.
-

I can't wrap my brain around this because I'm pretty sure they still have the rights to the Dungeons and Dragons computer games and they release a butt ton of games every year. As far as publishers go they're at the top but man it's like every PC RPG Publisher magically suffers from financial shit regardless of their profits.
On a lighter note, King's Bounty is a really misogynistic game. Every 5 seconds your wife talks about how lonely she is and how making a baby will fix that (only to beg for another child 10 battles later). If you dump her she instantly becomes pissy and complains about how you treated her like shit and then leaves. I dumped zombie wife for frog wife in a heart beat and I feel kind of sad that I basically kicked 4 kids and a woman out in the cold but oh well I'M A FUCKING BARON I DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP NO BULLSHIT, SON!

marcus:
having babies with a frog furry since 08
-
can you call it a furry? more like amphibi or something.
okay guys, i am tasking you with finding a word for amphibian love fetish ready set go
-
I think my hero died, how do I ressurect him? Or is he an actual 'piece' in the battle?
Also is there a way to get multiple mage 'pieces' instead of having them stack? Advantages? Disadvantages?
-
This confused the heck out of me at first. Your hero is the commander and he's too high and mighty to be battling amongst the common folk. Your stats (as seen in the hero screen) which are influenced by your skills and equipment directly influence every single unit in your army and no you can't get multiple pieces of them they always stack but some units do have the ability to "split" in combat. You can't really die in the game; if you lose all of your units you return to Darion and the King funds another journey and gives you some cash to build a crappy army.
-
Oh, I'm starting to understand. I thought my 'hero' died, but I guess it was just a knight. I didn't understand how increasing my stats worked, but now I do!

You think you have it bad my Wifes a Zombie. Although I can turn her back and forth at will which makes life easier.
Edit: Ah read your last post, if you didn't like your wife complaining you should have turned her back into a Zombie.
Anyway excellent game, absolutely loving this.

hexagonal tiles! takes me back to my warhammer days...
-
Will it be beatable in 10 seconds?
http://tasvideos.org/1145M.html
-
It is impossible to beat this game in 10 seconds, even if you use every cheat.
-
I played this all day and my quicksave wasn't saving for some reason and . . .
. . .
Man . . .
-
I can't read Russian but apparently they released a new character for download. Instead of a rage box, she gets a dragon with special abilities (who looks suspiciously like Stitch).
Disney Will Sue (http://www.kingsbounty.ru/princess/)
Also, there's rumors of an expansion which will include a random map/quest generator for full replayability. Sounds fun.
-
Just got it... I'm going through the training battles but I have no clue what I'm doing. This game does a bad job of explaining stuff but its pretty fun. *goes back to playing*
-
Uh...it's pretty obvious, and the game tells you what to do.
I actually ended up buying this a week ago and was a bit disappointed really. I loved the demo, but I got bored pretty fast of constantly having to go back to the start to get troops after every battle. I find myself trying to skip battles whenever I play it instead of fighting them now. :(

In text boring text not in a battle, I normally skip over long winded shit.
-
How can you complain about not knowing what to do if you're skipping people telling you what to do?
There's barely any dialogue at all in this, everything is pretty much just people saying "go here and do this". It's not long-winded.

I ppretty much figured out how it works, its an excellent game it's just a preference to be told about how the battles work while im in battle and do through some long explanation.
-
If you can't work out how these battles work without someone telling you than you really shouldn't be playing this sort of game. It's as arcadey as hex-based battle systems get.

WTF man, I just SAID that I figured it out. You know.... In post above yours? The one with my user name on it?
