Hi, You are Silent Hill 5, A game in a series i have been much a fan of, But you are not allowed in Australia. Because adults dont play computer games here, They are played mostly by Children, Despite what statistics show. Oh did we mention they are NOT a form of art and train all our children to kill things. And its fine to have Violence depicted in art because you HAVE to look at that through a different prism.
But enough of the nannystate bashing.
I have ordered my Copy of Silent Hill Homecoming. It will arrive hopefully today or tuesday (Monday is a public holiday)
What are people's opinions of the game so far? Those of you who have played it
Australians are set to get a Watered down version next year, of course with the standard Being screwed over Regional Prices aswell but fuck you guys
-
I'm really wanting to play this but I don't have any nextgen bullshit and this is not for PC iirc? Not yet at least.
-
I'm not sure about this. It's by another company from America. So, can they keep with the genre, or will it spin off into another realm?
-
australia isn't a nanny state unless you consider the government sponsored racism against some of the people you should be nannying as part of being a nanny state.
vidcons...
-
fuck i want this game so bad :(
-
i hope this one is actually, you know, good.
as in playable.
-
i played silent hill 2 and 3 pretty recently. i really like 2, like a lot. i didn't like 3 very much at all. i watched a interview with the guys who are making this a while ago and they seem pretty stupid so this will need to have a good atmosphere and locations for me to like it. i'm gonna wait a while until i decide if i'm going to get it or not. i really liked silent hill 2, even though it was pretty bad i liked it's intentions. this one seems like it might just be trying to recapture whatever silent hill 2 had without actually understanding it, or at least that's the impression i got from the interview and the fact that pyramid head is showing up in this one. i thought pyramid head was like this manifestation of james' fucked up desires in silent hill 2. if he's in this one then he's just some monster guy. who cares.
fuck i want this game so bad :(
it's interesting you say this cos when i was playing silent hill 2 it was also around the time i was watching twin peaks and david lynch films so i get all of these kind of jumbled up in a really nice way. i watched a bunch of other creepy/nutzo films during this time too like jacob's ladder and cube so there's an atmosphere which, for me at least, all of these things share. that's kind of why i'm worried about getting this, cos i might just be trying to recapture that atmosphere while it doesn't actually deserve my money so i'm gonna wait and see.

Apparently there was a PC version after all (at least according to steam) but the system requirements are twice bigger than what my system has to offer.
Minimum:
OS: Windows XP / Vista
Processor: 2.8 GHz (XP); 3.2 GHz (Vista)
Memory: 1GB System Memory
Graphics: GeForce 7800 GT / ATI X1950 256 MB Memory
Hard Drive: 10 GB Free space

Graphics: GeForce 8800 GT / ATI HD2900 512 MB Memory

There really isn't anything else besides this, left 4 dead and starcraft 2 that I'm looking forward to but they all require me to upgrade my comp/or get a nextgen console so maybe I should but I don't think this alone is worth it.
I've been looking at a walkthrough/playthrough at youtube and, well, so far it's pretty uneventful, and the dumbass who is playing doesn't have the flashlight on for most of the time which results in a completely black screen.
EDIT:
So I watched a couple more videos and there is like 1 enemy encounter per an hour, I don't know if this guy is playing it on easy or something but there doesn't seem to be nothing out there to threathen you at all. I admit this guy is also really lost on where he is supposed to go (I think it's because hes dumb and not because the game is unclear as to where to go next) but the game seems really boring; there's this 10 second ambient sound looping on the background that never seems to stop, everything is really dark even with the flashlight on, all the textures are some shade of grey or brown, and there are no monsters besides 2 dogs that don't respawn.
-
Homecoming is just simply amazing, the enemies are difficult but if you can figure out there attack animation you can dodge everything! The story has been very good so far but I've only made like 4 hours in. The game feels like it could possibly take 20 hours plus to beat though.
-

I think it was actually the Silent Hill series that got me into David Lynch. I remember looking at the Wiki and reading that his movies were an influence on the games, so I guess that's what made me go out and rent Mulholland Dr. And the rest.... is history...
-
the more I hear about this the worse it seems.
:(
-
Heres my advice, don't ever watch gameplay videos on youtube. Seriously watching that stuff just ruins the game, you'd have much more fun playing the game yourself, preferably by yourself.
-
I want to try this. I generally liked every SH game, though 2 really takes first place.
Thank god there's a PC version.
-
I have never played a Silent Hill game.
-
I have never played a Silent Hill game.
well, play 2 if you want to play a silent hill. if you don't, then who cares about stupid silent hill.

Haha, me too.
I really hope they don't mess this up, because the first two Silent Hills are some of my favorite games ever (I didn't like 3 so much and though I liked 4 it didn't hold up to the first 2.)
-
I remember early in development they were going to make it an FPS, but they decided to go with the 'classic Silent Hill' style. However, your main character is a soldier, so he's proficient with guns and you'll get a lot of gunplay in this one. Who needs a board with a nail in?
This game might be made to feel like a Silent Hill game, but I highly doubt the surreal substance and accurate atmosphere can be pulled off by these people. It's like some other writer making a James Bond book. It sort of sounds like James Bond, but it's no Ian Flemming. (Or you can take that with a Wizard of Oz tale comparison)
-

Aw man, a lot of the greatness of Silent Hill was the satisfaction of beating down monsters with boards, hammers, rusty pipes etc. If they make it as gun oriented as like Resident Evil 4 or something that will kill it.
-
I thought you were going to get more close combat moves with all the objects you'll come across. Sides there was a bunch of guns in every Silent Hill game, it's just that aiming might be different. And even if theres guns there wasn't alot of ammo that you could go around going gun-ho on everything you had to save up for the bosses, and if Pyramid Head is in this then he's most likely going to be invincible.
P.S. It's metal pipes man, the metal pipe is a trade mark of Silent Hill it's in every game.
-
That's wrong. Metal pipes aren't in every game. :|
-
Really? Which one didn't have the pipe? If it's that one involving the trucker I havn't played that one.
-
Oh my god, nevermind. I guess I just sucked too bad.
I don't recall ever getting it in SH2. heh.
-
this game is pretty fun so far
-
Oh my god, nevermind. I guess I just sucked too bad.

Don't feel to bad, I missed the rifle in the original game, which made the rest of the game pretty difficult...
Also, am I the only one that found SH2 not as good as 1 and 3? 2 wasn't scary to me, it seemed dull to me. and the story was 'meh' in my humble opinion.
and I played 4 for a half an hour and got sick of it.
-
Well, Silent Hill 2 wasn't as scary per se, but it has one of the best video game endings ever. It also depends if it's your first Silent Hill game. I played 2 first, and since my friend beat it I started a new game and was able to obtain the other endings, the one I got was in the water or something and I gotta say that letter made me cry. And yes there is a metal pipe in Silent Hill 2 you can skip it if you wish though.
I have yet to play homecoming but give us some details or confirm some of the stuff thats buggin' us DietCoke.
-
i went to check a video for this game on youtube. is the opening scene really just a straight lift out of jacob's ladder? cos i only saw a little bit but the camera angles and everything were the same. if it is, then that's just crappy.
-
Apparently this game takes a lot of shit from movies, like Jacobs Ladder, Hostel and the Silent Hill movie. I've only seen the SH movie and haven't played this game but a lot of people who have draw these same connections between the said movies and the game.
-
This looks really good actually, I've only ever played the Silent Hill on the PSP which I thought was pretty cool, I just didn't get to finish it though.
-
Looks good, but I don't think I'll be picking it up. Not my kind of game.
-
Well it might look good as in AWESUM GAME ME THINKS :)))) but as far as real looks go all the characters besides the protagonist look really bad for a nextgen game, like something you'd expect from a PS2 game.
-
the more i hear about this game the more it looks like it sucks. does it suck? i don't want to buy it if it sucks.
-
and the Silent Hill movie
Unless you mean the game looks exactly like the movie's special effects or what
and weren't they all based on Jacob's Ladder
Edit: Also this is the least informative topic ever where the hell are the screens
-
Well yeah, the special effects/the transformation but also there are those cultists in mining suits and gas masks and a few other things that are straight from the movie.
-

eh silent hill has always drawn from horror stories like ringu and uzumaki (the blaring air raid alarms anyone??)
-
Oh he's talking about designs... well yeah they said they would take some designs directly from the movie.
-
Well, Silent Hill 2 wasn't as scary per se,
I never understood when people said this. What the fuck games have you been playing, man. I don't really get scared, and I blame being exposed to slasher movies at a young age, but Silent Hill 1 and 2 were the things that made me the closest to being scared by a medium in a while.
-
the Silent Hill on the PSP
Wasn't that by another company still?
My fear is that they'll take the wrong story out of the whole series and try and make some kind of linking saga that binds this shit together. The movie alone ruined a ton, while not canon I suppose. The less we know about this town and how it's all linked, the better. I really don't want cultists to be explained expansively, or Pyramid turning out to be some spiritual leader from years ago.
Also, if you're not scared by the Silent Hill games; it would have been best to play at midnight with all lights turned out. Especially worth it if the room is wide enough to put a chair before the tv, and have nothing around you. I did that, and found myself quickly folding my legs to avoid sack monsters yanking me under the chair.
Playing with other people nearby makes it a laughable experience, unfortunately. :( Ruins the mood when you can laugh at the ridiculous sack creature design, or make up funny tales about where the odd sounds are coming from -- or why some guy has his front ripped off and sitting infront of a snow channel tv.
-
Reason why I wasn't as scared (except for Silent Hill 1, cause of it's graphics wasn't all that scary for me after I played 2 first) was because of this strange death scene with those four box things (forgot what they were called). Because of that it kinda killed it for me, which is why I say it's not as scary.
Anyways, yeah if you make the same mistake I did with a horror game by watching youtube playthroughs you pretty much ruined the experience. Specifically I watched the first Siren as a play through... yeah wasn't as good as it could've been if I just sat down and played the damn thing after I rented it instead of watching it being played by someone else.
P.S. I've played some pretty disturbing horror games mate, i'm a big horror games kinda guy and let me tell ya it erodes the effectiveness of future horror games. Then theres this one game with a title related to being unable to scream and theres this weird slug guy without a mouth on the cover.

There's no "scarier" game than Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. You don't even pick up guns in the game until much later and most of the enemies are either hallucinations or pop out the corner of the screen and then dart away in the darkness. Things that confront you up close aren't terrifying. Fear lies in the unknown.
And what you're talking about is I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream; a video game based on Ellison's short story that he literally wrote in a night with no changes. Ellison's story is pretty plain but the game is one of those rare occasions where an adaption is actually better than its source material.
-
hahahahahaha you asshole the story is so much better.
and I hate Ellison as a person and I think he's a limited writer so that's something from me.
GO BACK TO 4CHAN AND SPREAD YOUR LULZ THERE.

Ouch dude, that would kill it. :(
I couldn't play Silent Hill 1. Freaked me out just with the demo. Had to rely on my buddy to play it, and even then I refused to watch at times, pretending to be busy with some art. Then 2 came along, and it was My Turn. :S That is such a mindfuck game... There's something about being scared that both thrills and disgusts me. I love it afterward, but hate myself and the game makers while playing it, lol.
Silent Hill 3 was kind of like... Old Hat. Once you've sat through 1 and 2, 3 was just like same ol' same ol'. Finally 4 came. My friend said it sucked, but perhaps that was just him. I watched him play a lot of it, and enjoyed the story. So muchso that I even went on to play it by myself, despite hating being spooked.
I really don't know what to think of this. 5 seems like such a misconseption on the Silent Hill series. I just watched a tv commercial (came on a few minutes ago) and it stinks of "hmm people liked this and this, so we'll do it again. Go find some kid in Silent Hill and get chased by Pyramid Head". Now I've almost -got- to play it, just to know that I dislike it for a reason... or be proven wrong.
-
Apparently that isn't pyramid head, it's some other wierd monster called the Boogeyman or Red Pyramid.
It's amazing what you pick up while on the 4PP Live Broadcast site. Good old 4PP.
-

Maybe it's different in the context of this game, but "Red Pyramid" is just another name for Pyramid Head. If it's not the same Pyramid Head and is in fact a monster called BOOGEYMAN then that's bullshit, what a boring and obvious name.
-
I am not sure if I really want to play this because it is Silent Hill with better controls or if that the reason I do not want to play it.
-
The concept of a better interaction with the enviroment then other games is what attracted me.
-
I played this game twice already, being a huge Silent Hill fan, I went and got it the day it came out. And honestly, I thought it was amazing. The monsters were all new except for the Zombie nurses, but obviously they are a staple in any Silent Hill game. Some of the monsters were extremely hard to beat, but once you figure out thier behaviors, it makes it a whole lot easier to dodge attacks and counter attack. And for whoever said there was only 1 monster per hour or whatever, you were very misinformed, on normal difficulty level, there were monsters all over the damn place, sometimes you would be surrounded by 3 or 4 at a time, and that creates a serious anxiety attack, haha. Some of the bosses were really hard too, some not so much, but I found saving all my ammunation for the bosses was the best strategy, because you avoid alot more hits and save more health drinks, serums, etc. I personally thought the puzzles could have been a bit more difficult, I didnt feel all that challenged, but maybe im just smarter than most ;-) As for the environment, one word, amazing. I thought the environment in this game was spectacular, you can actually move pieces of furniture around, interact with the environment, which was never possible in all other installments of Silent Hill. Another new feature was the lack of a fixed camera angle, which was sooooooooooooooooo nice. You can actually look around at the environment and the bodies of monsters (I think some were actually anatomically correct too, haha). Ax, my old friend, you will so not be dissapointed!!!!!!!!!!
-
So Red Pyramid is actually different from Pyramid Head? How so? Is the Radio in? Hows the story?
Since you say it's good i'm geussing it's not just some stuff slapped together by the guys who did this.
-
it looked like the exact same pyramid head to me...you only really see him in one scene in the entire game, but he looked the same to me...
-

I was thinking, why the hell is Pyramid Head even in this...
At least his appearance in #2 made sense.

Cheri my dear its a pleasure as always.
I forgot i posted about it here.
Pyramid head/boogyman was the same design as the one from the movie, He was different to the one from Silent hill 2 though. His knife also looked like a massive combat knife, But im still not sure he fits into the game.
Ok thoughts on the game, Now that i've had some time to let it soak in and such im kinda mixed on this game, They new combat style with dodging and over the shoulder camera for aiming. What i didn't like is that the Knife, Was the most powerful weapon you had, for its speed alone, The game looked nice, The mood was there but the story was a tad lacking i felt. I believe they borrowed too much from the movie. I would still rank it above some of the other games but I was still dissapointed, The game just seemed to lack that Melancholy flavor the others had,
Also Australia WHAT THE FUCK? You bitch and moan about a person getting drilled or cut in half, Then let deadspace in where the KEY gamefeature is Dissmemberment. Im not complaining deadspace was awesome, but it irks me.
-

Shock value, mister, shock value.
Also it is astonishing how you managed to suddenly post for the first time in god knows how many centuries
infact I didn't even know you had an account here, what a travesty
-
good god, eltee
i was not aware of your guise
how are you my good man
-
I was thinking, why the hell is Pyramid Head even in this...

I know, it confused me when I finished the game, cause you only see him once...but then again, after the scene with Pyramid Head in the hotel, I was scared of moving around the halls and rooms too quickly, certain that he would be around the corner....so it did build up suspense. I was always wondering, where will he turn up next? But then for him not to show up again at all? What was the point? But I guess the Silent Hill series isn't Silent Hill without him.
By the way, did anyone else find the zombie nurses extremely hot in this game? Im a girl, and im not into pussy....but still. Hot damn girls! I wish I had that kind of cleavage, haha :naughty:
-
Im a girl, and im not into pussy....
:fogetnah:
but seriously, if they added pyramid head for the sake of shock value then they made a mistake, because everyone would either be like "FUCK YEAH PYRAMID HEAD" or "oh look pyramid head... why"
-

He showed up twice for me,
Once
in the hotel
twice
when he killed your father who was tied up
And the silent hill series is COMPLETELY the silent hill series without him. He wasn't in 1 or 3 or 4, His bastard younger step-brother was in Zero, And i only think he was thrown in there because the game borrowed heavly from the film, And he was only in the film for fan service. I mean i like the dude and all, But really he doesn't need to keep popping up in everything.
As for the nurses. I went to a party with people dressed as zombie nurses.
They had cleavage of that calibre.......
yep
-
the zombie nurses are a lot more badass in this game... in previous games they would maybe take a swing at you if they got close, but in homecoming they will back you into a corner and break out some sick knife combos and you won't even be able to move
-
So how many of the monsters are actually original? And are any of the non-original ones not out of place if you actually think about it and connect the dots?
I mean oh sure Pyramid Head cameo but Pyramid is supposed to be some kind of punisher right? Maybe he's the punisher of guilt in this one if you actually try to justify it, even if it is just a cameo it'd be worse if you couldn't even justify his appearance.
-
i think all the monsters in this game are just there for shits
the only one i can see that has any kind of relevance is the doll boss because the girl and her dolls and yeah
-
I didn't find Silent Hill 3 to be scary at all! Although it was entertaining, and some of the monsters had interesting designs, most of the time I was laughing! Silent Hill 4 was even more hilarious to me, especially with the weird wheelchair creatures. The only real reason I played Silent Hill 4 is to see what kind of ridiculous creatures they would throw at me.
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 1 might be the only scary ones. They have interesting environments, but they are not very engaging on a gameplay level.
I probably will never play another Silent Hill.
A question I have is why the fuck did they choose to make the controls in these games so damn shitty? I never understood that, at all.
-
Shitty? I found the controls in Silent Hills (not 1 though, I guess) pretty good because
you could choose between 3d and 2d movement. Resident Evil or NOT DUMB movement.
The rest did just fine.
