So yes. You read right, yet another Nintendo DS redesign, this time called "Nintendo DSi". I'll copy and paste the most important features and post some pics:
- 12%, 2.6 millimeters lighter, no more GBA slot (no more Guitar Hero)
- bigger screens, better speakers
- Camera: two cameras - one inside and one out - 640×480 resolution
- screens are 3.25 inches
- camera and audio functions
- only one touch screen according to Nintendo UK spokesperson
- pictures taken should be able to be manipulated via touch screens
- pitch and sound playback speed can be adjusted
- SD card slot
- store then view pics on Wii Photo Channel
- internal memory for apps
- built-in web browser
- download DSi Ware with Nintendo Points (Wii points renamed)
- apps will cost free/200/500/800 points.
- download via the Nintendo DSi Shop.
- owners that connect by March, 2010 will receive 1000 Points as a gift. (Japan)
- Hits Japan on Nov 1st for 18900 yen…2009 release for rest of the world
- colors: white and frosted black
- Games due out around launch: Valk Profile DS, Kirby (most likely SSU), Kyotaro, Rockman (most likely MMSF3), World Food, Phantasy Star Zero, Momotaro Dentetsu, Mario and Luigi 3
- AAC playback for DSi
- DS browser will be Opera

My opinion: it sucks.

What?
I don't have a NDS now. I sold my old one. Maybe the next one I pick up will be this one.
-
Well, if I didn't have a DS Lite I would go for it.
-
kind of cool i guess but really maybe its time they thought about upgrading hardware?
-
I was wondering why nobody had posted this here yet.
I'll be getting one of these. Mainly because I have been meaning to upgrade from my DSPhat , and I haven't bothered yet. These look pretty good, and there is some potential for homebrew with those cameras.
Really crappy video chat, anyone?
-
I will probably buy this (maybe after the first price drop, it's not urgent). The built in SD slot means homebrew will probably be a lot easier, I love the idea of downloadable content, and the size change makes a big difference when you wear girl pants and have pockets that basically cannot hold a DS. I have very, very few GBA games and I still have my actual GBA (though the screen is smudged from the inside so it's a little hard to see), so the removal of that slot is no big deal. All in all this seems like a great improvement.
Kind of a weird thought, but I remember there being a cell phone version of Fatal Frame that would use pictures you take and put really cheesy, bad looking ghosts over top of them as part of the gameplay. Even though it's a really hilariously bad idea, I would probably buy this same game for the DS. I don't know, I was just trying to find a way that the camera could be incorporated into a game and that's all that I could think about. I want to take a picture of a box and have GHOST HANDS coming out of them (i think this was a real screenshot from that game)
-
I'll probably get this as well eventually, the idea of downloadable content and SD card support seems pretty cool to me (cave story ds? it's definitely a possibility) and a ton of more accessible homebrew is pretty great. I also still have my GBA so yea I don't really need a slot for it, and guitar hero on the ds seemed pretty horrible. it's weird that they're waiting so long for a US release though (past april according to a recent interview with reggie)
-
The only thing about the GBA slot going that I could imagine being an issue is that I think Monster Rancher DS (which I'm pretty sure isn't even out in the US, I think it's out in Japan though I don't really keep up with it) used the GBA slot as sort of a replacement for CDs...however, I think it still had the code system so it's not a very big deal.
-
-bigger screen
-better speakers
-external storage
-web browser
-aac playback
-downloadable apps and connectivity with parent console
is nintendo feeling threatened by the PSP?
-
looks like I'll be getting a DS lite (the last one), sooner than I thought. (New design usually = price drop for older models)
Honestly, I don't see why they felt the need to redesign the DS. Most people I know don't need the extras Nintendo added on to this (I'm looking at you web browser) and the removal of the GBA slot? Why?
Oh well, my bitching isn't gonna stop it from being made, so... I'll just leave it at that.
-
The lack of a GBA support is something of a bummer as I still play a few of my GBA games. With that said, I haven't really been heavy on multimedia in my gaming devices so a lot of what the DSi has I don't care too much for. Still, the prospect of a WiiWare like service on the DS is pretty cool. I'll see how things go though, it certainly looks nice and the matte black model is jawesome.
-
man does Nintendo have to redesign every one of their portable systems like 57 times or what
anyway I'm glad I didn't get a DS up until this point, except I /do/ care about GBA compatibility because my GBA is the stupid first model GBA with no fucking backlight
fuck you nintendo
-
well, I might buy a lite or phat now that they'll be going down in price. That's why I love console redesigns.
-
No GBA slot means I'd never bother to get this. I have a Micro, so GBA games are all I play (and they're the best).
-
man does Nintendo have to redesign every one of their portable systems like 57 times or what
3 redesigns will do.
Anyways this is really dumb imo! I want a successor to the DS/GBA, not another remake. The DS hardware is incredibly dated and I don't know how much longer people will keep paying for its underpowered hardware!
-
Just thinking about all of that raw, surging power makes me wonder why I should give a damn.
Personally, I don't really think this is going to go over as well as the other DS updates; however I could very well be wrong.
-
god I still have a DS phat.
I see no reason to upgrade.
-
you guys seem to ignoring how easy it will be to pirate ds games now. i have no intention of paying for square's overpriced ports but this will make it worth my while (and the ds is region free so a japanese one isn't going to do any harm).
-

Isn't it easy to pirate DS games now? If anything, it should be a bit harder to pirate on the DSi, since it will probably have countermeasures for existing DS piracy methods (R4, etc). I'm sure getting DS games to run from the SD card slot is no small task, either.
-
I don't like this too much but there's one thing I saw in a vid and in this thread that is definitely worthwhile
mario and luigi 3 oh greeeeeeat :D
-
"haha let's redesign it with a camera and built-in web browser. we'll never be accused of making paedophile tools ever again!"
-

If they do, it will be cracked within a week. Nintendo makes it too easy.
When this comes out, I won't be getting it. I already have a phat DS, so I might upgrade to a lite if I have any extra cash. The upgrades seem pointless, since my other handheld devices already do the things listed.
-
I'm not one to get mad (or care too much) about vidcons, but it's really dumb that this will be backwards compatible with NOTHING.

You need a custom made micro-sd card to pirate ds games now.
the dsi runs standard sd cards meaning anything you can pick up for 20 bux at the local wal-mart. early cards required use of the gba slot to boot the disk but now the disks are self-executable.
it's only a matter of time (i give it 2-3 days) when someone releases an exe that lets you run ds games off the card and then people will no longer have to scour the internet for 100$ cyclone ds/r4 cards.
-
I just hope you all transferred your pokemans over from your old games. Now they are GONE FOREVER.
Or you could just skip this and wait for the next handheld in 3 years.

yeah seriously. i feel bad for the pokemans players and geetar hero. heck, i actually USED my rumble pack for the games that supported it. removing the extra slot was pretty dumb and i can't imagine it saved nintendo a fistful of green.
seriously, every time these guys redesign something they add a bunch of stuff then remove all the good stuff. can anyone even offer a legitimate explanation why the gba sp lacked a headphone adapter??????
-

As long as the appeal is there people will continue to keep buying and with the DS on pace to outsell the entirety of the original GB line in nearly half the time we likely won't see a true successor until things fall off in a big way.
-
If they made a handheld that was completely backwards compatible: GB, GBC, GBA, and DS. I would shell out 250$ for it in a heartbeat.
-

Haha the GBA SP wouldn't allow headphones???? I mean the Wonderswan didn't either but it's HOW MUCH OLDER? That is ridiculous.
Anyway, the biggest reason the GBA slot is gone is that it allows for the DSi to be a lot thinner (which like I said before it matters in my case but may not to any of you). I also have a GBA with no backlight, my brother and I put in an aftermarket backlight and that's why my screen is smudged. Also the backlight doesn't work anymore so there is no reason for it. But anyway, I don't have many GBA games so it's no big deal.
Plus, if the downloadable content turns out to be good, then that right there is a BIG reason to buy this over a different DS.

It's not copying the iPhone... seriously... It's a DSi... not an iDS
-
It's not copying the iPhone... seriously... It's a DSi... not an iDS
Who the hell said it was copying the iPhone?
This is great and all, but what the DS really needs is GOOD GAMES.
I think I'm going to skip on this and get a PSP. I fucking hate my old DS.
-
ur dense xanqui
-
This is great and all, but what the DS really needs is GOOD GAMES.
The DS sure as hell does have a lot of shovelware but to say it doesn't have GOOD GAMES is a bit of a blanket statement IMO.
off the top of my head, trace memory was good, hotel dusk was good, the ace attorney games were samey but good nonetheless, shiren was good, New SMB was good, advance wars was good, and there were a ton more that I can't think of ATM.
When it comes to GOOD GAMES most people argue it's the PSP that's lacking, not to say they're necessarily right.
-
Are nintendo gonna let people keep the old gba games on their SD card?
I have the original DS and as far as I am concerned it does it's job and fits into my hands nicely (I am a bit too ape-like for the smaller, more slender DS).
Adding cameras just seems a pointless addition unless you really want to cyber with people near wireless access points. If you are gonna put that much time and effort into something you may as well sit at a computer!
I mean unless it sucks me off and cooks my dinner, this is a totally pointless upgrade.
If it had a more powerful processor (say those new mobile TEGRAs that Nvidia are touting atm) it would be so much more badass and worthwhile.
-
Maybe it's just me but it doesn't look THAT much different from the DS Lite in the first place, I have no reason whatsoever to get a DS because I don't like the games on it except maybe that FF4 remake and I'd rather wait for a NDS emulator to come out for the PSP than buy the DS for the FF4 remake.
-

good luck

Yeah, the PSP - well known for it's lower touchscreen.
YOU SILLY MAN.
-

Actually there is a DS emulator for the PSP and it uses the analog stick as a "mouse" but you get maybe 2 frames per second on even the test games. Some hardcore nerds made it just to piss off ninty fanboys.
now, Open Pandora (http://openpandora.org/) is probably capable of emulating the DS...
-
My NDS is rarely used, and when it is, I need headphones (at work). So... I really don't care about this.
-
One of the heads of Nintendo came out to say that it's not copying apple, even when very few if any were claiming it was.
Seems suspicious.

if anything it's copying the psp jeeze
-
it was about both actually if I recall, just the whole iPhone thing is really fantastic.
-
BTW is there a reason for the "i" at the end? DSi...wtf!
-
I don't see why it's fair to say it's copying the PSP when everyone else is complaining that it lacks features the PSP has. It's like frowning at them for DOING WHAT YOU ASKED THEM TO.
Also: maybe this will mean less new separate Phoenix Wright games and instead just downloadable cases. It would mean no manufacturing costs and with downloadable content it's not really necessary to have to buy a new cartridge for games that function exactly the same (so until some huge gameplay update comes, there's no reason to need to physically buy a new game).
-
You know what would be a plus? If the DS and the PSP had some kind of shop like Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network, that way they could charge us for downloading games for our portable consoles without having to carry a shit load of cases or cartridges for the amount of games we have...I don't see why it won't work since the PSP and DS both have wifi capability. It would save resources I guess since they wouldn't need to manufacture game manuals and plastic game cases.

Actually the PSP has a downloadable store but you have to have access to PSN over the PS3 to get stuff for it.
MONEY IN THE BANK
-
maybe it's the DSi because it has an eye, as in a camera.
THATS THE EXCUSE THEY SHOULD USE.
-
doopz for nintendo marketing director
-
at least it's not the DSii

Yeah that's the thing you have to have a PS3. Nintendo should have something like this.
-
This is just like what happened to the GBA, first the shitty first model, then the SP model w/ a back light, then the pointless micro. With the DS its now the shitty phat, the superior lite, and now the DSi. I still have a phat and might get a lite soon, or wait for the DSi instead. I think the DSi should be a next gen portable console instead of an upgrade....
-

I think the DSi will have the capability to download software, although they will be its own applications (as far as I know anyway). I wouldn't expect full retail like games if that's what you mean, more of the kind of stuff you usually see on these download services save for some exceptions.
-
The i stands for internet probably. At least it takes cheap sd cards. And who cares if the gba slot is gone, just download them to your sd card.
-

And the shame here is the amount of utter SHIT that is on the DS that appeals to the broad market of soccer moms and old people. Seriously, fucking HORSE videogames and PETZ and OH LOOK NOW YOU CAN LIVE YOUR DREAM OF BEING A CAREER DENTIST. Christ, for every neat game, there's 50 shovelware titles that move units to people that have zero interest in any of the things that made the gaming industry in the first place.
-
you know what i do? fuck around and do shit with my ds just cos nintendo don't want me to (plus cos i feel embarassed i have one and don't wanna have totally wasted the money) so i download game after game...emulator after emulator....usin all their software, all the hardware all of it all the time fuckin' with nintendo on the Antitendo Express fuck em hate nintendo
this DSi thing is just irritating. it's like, i could formulate a reason why but i gotta go to a lecture just now so i will maybe come back and do it later.
-
kind of cool i guess but really maybe its time they thought about upgrading hardware?
yea, are they not upgrading the cpu or video or mem at all?
-

all these goddamn little girl horse games and not a single non-arcade horse racing/training/breeding sim that comes to the states because apparently WE DON'T LIKE HORSES ENOUGH
-
yea, are they not upgrading the cpu or video or mem at all?
I think they are actually in order to power the new features. It is still a Nintendo DS though, not a Nintendo DS 2.

True, but what core gamer is buying a DS for those kinds of games anyway? The only pet game I have on the DS is Nintendogs and that was a Sage program gift, otherwise the kind of "gamer games" I've been playing are the only kinds of games I'll continue to keep buying and I imagine most Nintendo DS owners who aren't part of that broad market sector are in the same boat. There is a lot of software love spread around the DS across a large majority of genres out there, although as of late it does seem to have been a haven for RPGs compared to most. Although I did have the misfortune of seeing shipment after shipment of Imagine and Petz games come into our store last holiday season while our first shipment of Contra IV (only eight copies) took nearly the entire time to sell through and our second and last shipment didn't sell through until a clearance period we had earlier this spring. Such a shame.
Still, as long as it doesn't screw with the games I like to play, I've no real issue with non gaming types finding some avenue of interest into gaming.
-
So can you download games for it? Like, download old GBA games like you can on the Wii Shop Channel? That'd be rad.
Also this looks pretty cool, but lack of GBA support sucks... I love my DS Lite though. aweorhf45
-

GBA games? Ah, I wouldn't expect something so ambitious. There descriptions thus far seem to lead more towards WiiWare-like content whether it be games or applications. But nothing really pointing towards a handheld variant of the Virtual Console. Even if that were to happen, I'd sooner assume pre GBA material to crop up more than anything else.
-
You notice though that about a good 80% of the shovelware bullshit comes from one fucking company. Ubisoft. Someone should knock some sense into their heads.
Anyways, I think I'm going to hold off on getting a new DS. I want to see if the hinges on this new one are as shitty as the ones on the Lite (seriously, $80 to replace a damn hinge. WTF?).
-
Shovelware?
-
I'd get this, but then I'd have to spend a few $100 on a supercard that works off the DS Slot alone, and I'd need a mini-SD card as well. :(
-
Shovelware is basically shitty, low quality, worthless games.

isn't it just a normal SD slot? You could get a cheap $20 one at walmart or something.
-
It's normal SD. Also, as long as this gets the homebrew treatment (which is INCREDIBLY likely), then there's no reason to be buying separate cards for it, it will just be straight of the SD. At least that's what I would expect.
-

He's saying the current way he pirates games uses a Slot-2 (GBA) device, and the DSi lacks a Slot-2.
-
Yeah, but it seems like you could pirate games directly from the built-in SD in this one, so if he got this he would not have to buy any new device. That's assuming there's nothing big blocking homebrew stuff (which knowing Nintendo, there's not)

Current piracy methods can't even run GBA roms from a Slot-1 device, what makes you so sure that running games from an SD card is so easy?
-
Nothing. Because we don't know what we can do with the DSi yet.
So technically neither of us know what it'll be able to do.

what, i just walked into the nintendo place and said "hinge cracked" and they were like "oic......brb" moments later "here u go" "thx"
(of course, this was before the warranty expired)
also i wouldn't count on ever running GBA roms without a slot 2 device on either DS or DS lite
-
I never got that GBA Advance with the backlight... I kind of count on my NDS to play GBA games now. Having fully overlooked that point in the main post, I have to now restate how much I will not be buying this.
Also, I'm not sure if it's still running, but the PSP had a store you could access from the PSP browser to download content. I haven't been on in ages, so who knows if they've dropped it or not. As far as I know, using the PS3 to download content is only one way of doing it. (As for old PSX games, it's actually preferable to do it over PS3, since you can just play it on the PS3 also or re-download at anytime.) Still, I do recall downloading crap from the PSP site at one time. Anyone know for sure?
-
it's pointless to buy another ds if you already have one
it is that simple
dead simple
oh shit
-
It's about time. Now I'll be able to buy the DS lite for cheap. I loaned someone my original DS and she accidentally cracked the top LCD screen, and I can't find LCD topscreens for the original NDS ANYWHERE. Very frustrating. I haven't even started the third game of Phoenix Wright. *withdrawals*
-
Well, I've been trying earnestly to play this Phoenix Wright game everyone seems excited about. It's like a less funny, more fun-to-play Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law (which subsequently probably stole gameplay design from Ace Attorney to be witty/lazy). Yet, the wonderful thing about CraptendoDS is that when you press at all on the cart, it pops the eff out. I put it in a bag, and pulled it out just now, and voila; cart popage. When this happens the system shuts down and cancels anything that happened before your last save.
Does the new NDS fix this idiot build (for a portable system, SERIOUSLY WTF)?
-
But why did you press on it? From personal experience, your fingers aren't meant to be even close to it.
Regardless, I never had any cart pop from it when I touched it, anyway.

a) pw is way better
b) harvey birdman was made by the same dang people, it is supposed to be based off the same gameplay system
3) you are wrong about everything here are my apinions
edit: i have never even touched the cart when holding my ds, much less popped it out, what is wrong with you
-
- SD card slot
This means ill never have to buy another ds game again! ROM HEAVEN!

Oh yeah, I never noticed it was the same people. Nice! Also: HB was way funnier. :( I hate anime, and the overdone anime expressions in pw ruin any attempt at humour.
@3) I don't pop it out while playing. I pop it out whenever I have to shut the lid and do something. I don't sit and play NDS like a console. It's like pulling out a book at work or whatever when I have a few minutes to kill. Then whenever or whereever I put the damn thing, the cart pops out. I could save every time, but I seriously mean I pull it out for a few minutes at a time. PSP wins in this area of annoyance. Even if the UMD pops out, it doesn't fuck up the gameplay.
Maybe I should just jam some ducktape on there, and send fashion to the wind. Red Green is right.
-
Err, but it did ruin the gameplay. I do remember the era of UMD shooting PSPs and well, games fucked up. ;/

I don't know why this is. I am rough as shit with my DS and I have never had a cartridge pop out. I have no idea what you are doing.
-

I never had any trouble with this, leastways. Then again, it both wasn't as big a problem / easy to pop out as the DS (I found)

Well, this one guy was mentioning how I shouldn't use my penis as a stylus. I have no idea what he was talking about though. The stylus isn't big enough.
-
HEHYE HILARIOUS HUMOR
-
Shame you ruined the joke by implying that the stylus isn't big enough and you're using your dick as one...
-
No, the real shame is that I posted at all. I have no excuse why the DS pops out. Maybe it's just some insane nintendo hating braincell that always tells my hand to grab the folded DS around the middle, which in turn causes the damn cart pop. I dunno. I just hate it. Spring loaded pile of annoyance.
