Title: TGS 08 - Wii - "Marvelous"
Post by: Kezay on October 09, 2008, 08:26:34 pm
Marvelous in the title having to do with the company tossing a lot of Japanese support Wii's way with like, five or six games, but there are quite a few other games for the system at TGS even if Nintendo themselves aren't doing anything there.  Will add more media and pics later, gotta split for a bit.

No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle

The follow up to the original No More Heroes, by Grasshopper Manufacture, Desperate Struggle has few details roaming about.  Despite once again to likely start Travis Touchdown as the main protagonist, the trailer shows him ready to square off against a mysterious woman ready to take on his single beam katana, with multiple variations of her own.  Expected to release sometime in 2010.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

An action RPG created by the developers of Princess Crown and Odin Sphere, Vanillaware, Muramasa follows the same direction in design with the producer going so far as to call it the third spiritual successor to Princess Crown. (Odin Sphere being the second)  The player can choose from two katana wielding protagonists, a young man name Kisuke and a woman named Kunoichi.  Based upon japanese mythology, the story revolves around a conflict over the Demon Blades; powerful swords that are the cause of chaos in the land.  The many beasts and demons you will face in the game are actually summoned to the world by the demon blades themselves.  Releases in Japan later this year and 2009 throughout other regions.

Arc Rise Fantasia

An RPG from imageepoch and published by Marvelous Entertainmen/XSeed Games.  The game is set in a world where a type of dragon has the capability to poison the land if it explodes in the area after being killed.  The empire of Meridian has had trouble dealing with flocks of these dragons as they pass by the area but take to action when it is learned that a horde of them is headed for the capital.  Two characters, a mercenary named Bright and a prince named Alse, go to aid in the effort.  Bright is nearly killed in battle until he is saved by a mysterious girl named Ryphia.  Ryphia has the power to control naturally forming storms of magic that appear as luminous rain.  Details overall are few and far between (at least until TGS yields a bit more), but otherwise the game's main character designer is the same one that did the character art for Eureka 7.  Arc Rise Fantasia is expected in 2009 for Japan, TBA for all other territories, although Marvelous has gone on record stating it will localize nearly all of its titles, including this one, outside of Japan starting in 2009.

Little King's Story

Developed by Cing and published by Marvelous Entertainment, LKS is a simulation RPG where the player takes control over a young boy that comes across a mysterious crown.  The crown gives the boy the power to charm people and make them follow orders and as such is made king of the world he's in.  Using his powers, his aims are to grow the town and make his subjects happy.  Players will send or lead groups of townspeople to build up the foundation of the village and to fight monsters and gathers resources.  It has a very Pikmin-like aspect to it, even various townspeople have their own weapons, skills and abilities to help in the effort.  When roaming about the town itself, npcs will go about their daily lives with actual goals and interactions that affect others in the village as well as your decisions in issuing commands.  This aspect of the game was noted as an important task for the developers early on when the game was first announced in 2007.  The player, while playing the role of the king, will also have other jobs they can specialize in as they too will have to get their hands dirty in helping to make progress in the village.  In addition there are seven other kingdoms all with their own specialities and people that the player will travel to throughout the course of the game.  While noted as an RPG, a variety of genre sub types such as life simulation, god game and RTS make up the complete foundation of the title.  The game is expected later this year in Japan and early 2009 in both North America and throughout Europe.

Rune Factory: Frontier

Developed by Neverland Co. LTD and published by Marvelous Entertainment, Rune Factory: Frontier expands the Havest Moon/RPG hybrid concept beyond handhelds and to the Wii in this all new adventure.  Following the original Rune Factory on the Nintendo DS (with the sequel expected... eventually) Frontier is placed in the middle of those two games allowing players of the original to interact with characters from that game.  In Frontier however, the game more closely resembles the original Harvest Moon games as you are able to manage and cultivate a farm but also, as you take care of your farm and expand throughout the environment, the town you're in will begin to grow and more people will begin to move in.  The main character, Raguna, in this game is on the search to find a missing girl and a mysterious floating island in the shape of a whale may hold clues to her whereabouts.  Outside of taking care of your farm and interacting with the townsfolk, Raguna will have to venture out to fight monsters which he can then befriend and use them to aid him in battle or provide goods and services back home.  In the game, stamina and magic are defined by a system called RP or "Rune Points."  As you use magic in battle or work the farm back home, you'll use up Rune Points.  In game you'll able to purchase a variety of equipment and items to help out Raguna, pretty much like any RPG out there.  The game is expected later this year in Japan and 2009 for North America and Europe.

Hey that Sonic game doesn't look terrible. Not great, but it looks a little bit different than their other recent offerings.

It will still probably suck though. We'll see.

I'm interested in that Klonoa 1 remake but I'm like one of the 10 people on earth who have ever played the original.

EDIT:
Judging by the "new" level design they are toning down the difficulty which really blows, the original already had a really good difficulty curve, imho.

Despite that horrible name, Muramasa looked pretty cool. I'm not too fond of the overall style, but it certainly looks great.
The rest look pretty lame to me.

Edit: oh it's from the creators of Odin Sphere. Neat.

If I had to pay for it i would not play it.

I was a huge fan of Tenchu on the PS1.

Tenchu 4 on the Wii.. Ugh. The comments on the Gametrailers page are saying "this looks good for Wii!" but uhh... It looks like a Gamecube game to me. I'm not impressed with that at all.

I like NMH and if i had a Wii, I would own it and i am looking forward to NMH2, but I'll probably be spending a hell of a lot more time on MH3.

you could fight each other's monsters in MR, but i can't imagine that being exciting for more than like three battles unless you had a shitton of friends playing and did a dang TOURNAMENT or something

but yeah MH is something else but i always heard it was pretty shit?

Monster Hunter is one of those series that's huge in Japan. The game sells PSPs by itself. It sells more than Crisis Core(maybe even MGS4), and is probably one of the most popular games in Japan. They're addicted to it. It's an online action RPG.
edit: Yeah Monster Hunter 2 sold 700,000 its first week. Ridiculous.

There's a pretty large fanbase in America too. It doesn't sell consoles like it does in Japan, though.

If I recall correctly, MH is like, non-mmorpg grindfest and you mash real huge monsters with the right assortment of magical swords and amulets for about 600 hours per monster cause they're huge

but yeah nmh2 is bound to be cool, i still have to play/beat the first one

and i need to check out muramasa, despite the orrendous repetitiveness, i liked Odin Sphere an incredible lot

edit: hahaha nmh2 looks like the previous one basically

but uh muramasa looks interesting. i'll probably give it a go anyway since it's a vanillaware game

monster hunter would be a lot cooler if they just let you play ACTUALLY online, it's a pain in the ass to organize MEETS with friends just to kill certain badguys.

the ps2 versions both had online and the newest psp version(monster hunter freedom 2 unite) will be able to go online though a ps3(somehow). Its pretty much a sure thing the wii version will be online as well(i just hope they don't use friend codes), and they came out of nowhere and confirmed there will be offline split screen play.

I'm all up for another Crystal Chronicles, I actually enjoy the zelda style combat. That and the two sonic games look good for a change.
Also I might get the Arc Rise Fantasia 'cause it looks intresting.

I might pass on MH3 though, even though I enjoy the first, it just doesn't look like anything has changed. It still looks like a bog standard Monster-Stabbing-Till-It-Dies simulator. if they actually had things like leveling in it, maybe I would get it though. Thats my only problem with MH1, the lack of statistic improvement from my mass murderous ways.

Personally, NMH2 doesn't intrest me at all, just like NMH.

A standard rpg style leveling system would be use-less in mh, increasing stats and gaining skills is already done by making better equipment and adding xp levels would remove the ability to go into a battle with a chefs knife and hunters armor just for a challenge.

Though the game will always be a Monster-Stabbing-Till-It-Dies(or is captured) simulator, there have been plenty of changes since the first game, just from the video you may have noticed the under water segments and if you were watching really closely, some of the weapons have new attacks and combos.  Other then that, there are several new weapons types(Gun Lance, Tachi, Hunting Horn and Bow and arrows), armor skill values(in stead of just getting skills from have a specific set of armor) as well as gems that can add to armor skill values(giving you skills you may not be able to get other wise), guild trial quests(you chose from a set of equipment to complete special mission, that work a bit differently from normal ones), Monster pvp(capture monsters can be used to battle against another players captured monster) and probably some other crap i can't remember.

think this went on a little longer then i originally expected... in short, i'd say give the game another chance(try out the newest psp version or something maybe), there might not be anything mind blowing, but if you haven't played since mh1 there might be enough new stuff to get you into the game again.

Medal of Honor Heroes 2 had no friend codes for it's online, 3rd party titles can use whatever servers they want to use so capcom will use their servers most likely just like EA's servers(even though most of their online games suck, this server blows nintendo's friend codes out of the water). By the way, the link for the video under FF:CC brings me to a sonic unleashed video O.O
