Georgia is going to execute this guy based on eyewitness testimony from 9 people, 7 of which recanted. There was no physical evidence whatsoever- no gun, no prints, nothing.
Follow that Amnesty International link to get a form-generated fax. It goes to the Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles, who has the power to stay the execution up until the moment it happens.
Edit for Update:
In case you missed it, the US Supreme Court issued a stay of execution to decide whether or not they would hear his appeal. Today they decided not to hear it, which means there is no court in the world which can intervene in Troy's case.
The decision on whether or not to execute Troy Davis lies entirely with the Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles.
please please please write letters and get as many people as you can involved in this
Amnesty is going to gather all the letters and deliver them to the Board at the same time, they're asking people not to contact the Governor or Attorney General, you can fax letters to the Atlanta Amnesty International office at 404-876-2276 or just use their links on this page to email/fax them directly from the website
-
well, this is pretty horrible if he's innocent. reminds me of how women in pseudo-theocratic Middle Eastern and African countries face similar situations where they're stoned to death for adultery or jailed/whipped for being raped
At first I thought you were talking about the nation of Georgia. However, since this is U.S. Georgia, I'm absolutely horrified! Why won't the Supreme Court grant an appeal or a re-trial?
-
there's a lot to do in the supreme court; they dont see every case that comes to them. it's tragic but it happens, just to speed along decisions.
fyi before anyone gets a chance to say it: yes I'm aware this probably won't work. but damn if that man is going to die and I won't have tried to do even the smallest bit of worthless armchair activism I got asked to do.
-
I read the wikipedia and it said that the event started when he and two friends beat the shit out of a homeless man and a cop got shot trying to break it up.
Whats this dudes story? Is there one?
I don't agree with him being executed but if he was willing to beat the shit out of a homeless man then that doesn't say much about his character.
-
yeah the wiki sounds pretty damning. maybe like a civilized country you should just cut off his hand or something
-
dude.
seven of the nine witnesses claiming he was beating up a homeless man RECANTED. some weren't even there. for all you know, the dude's friends were beating the homeless man up and he was like DUDES GET OFF HIM GET THE FUCK OFF HIM.
and besides yeah it's horrible to beat up a homeless guy, NO SHIT, but it's not something to kill a man for. in fact *gasp* many of us are against the death penalty in all cases.
don't be fucking ridiculous.
-
read:

I already filled out that email thing and sent it in saying I don't agree with it and he should get an appeal. Yes, I think its fucking stupid he isn't getting a fair trial. But I also don't like the fact that there isn't any information telling HIS STORY and WHAT HAPPENED!
If all I see is: "three dudes jumped a homeless man, who refused to give them a beer. One of which shot a cop" and there isn't ANYTHING telling the other side of the story that doesn't help his case does it? You'd think if this guy actually had a lawyer the other side would be in that wiki too.
I'm not being ridiculous, I just think its ridiculous that it seems pretty one-sided
-
Listen up guys ok.
As steelio said seven of the nine witnesses recanted and many said the police tried to pressure them into it. Do you really think a man should be executed if there is in any way doubt of his guilt? We're not saying THROW OPEN THE PRISON DOOR AND LET HIM OUT WITHOUT A NEW TRIAL, we're saying do the fucking humane thing and don't let the state murder a man who is possibly innocent.

BOTH of you aren't fucking reading
NO ONE is saying he shouldn't get an appeal
THE INFORMATION GIVEN IS FUCKING ONE SIDED, SHIT
This is a link with troy talking (http://luxmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o10/clients/amnesty/TroyDavis_edit_4.mp3)
I still don't get why he doesn't tell straight out, his recollection of what happened
-

it's wikipedia
-
Yeah and I'm looking around and I still don't see anything with him recalling what exactly happened, which is pretty stupid imo.
-
dude why does he have to tell anything? argh you're arguing such a bullshit point for some unfathomable reason.
COXSWAIN WHERE WERE YOU THAT NIGHT? OH YOU DONT REMEMBER? SUSPICIOUS. people who don't even have a murder weapon and seven of nine witnesses recant shouldn't face the death penalty.
also yeah its possible he WAS doing something less than savory that night; one of the witnesses that could have cleared him, for instance, was violating parole at the time. who gives a shit.
-
it's called pleading the fifth dude. quit trying to play devil's advocate for no reason! it's within his rights to not have to tell us what he was doing and it doesn't make it HMMM FISHY either.
-
I do?
Like I said I agree 100% with what this topic is intentionally about, but you'd think if he was really innocent everyone would be hearing about this shit and his story would be all over the news and in books and all kinds of other shit.
So what he can't remember what exactly went on that night. He should be able to remember, WHETHER OR NOT HE KILLED SOMEONE!
Thats what I really don't get. He's been sitting in prison for like 20 years FOR MURDER and he's holding shit back and pleading the fifth? WHY? It doesn't make any sense at all.
-
Execution is so terrible. There will always be miscarriage of justice, so there will always be cases like this one where it seems inconceivable that someone could get sentenced to the death penalty based on the flimsy evidence that exists.
It does not work and will not ever work.
-
what the fuck is this. i just got back in from the pub so i can't handle this at the moment but crap i'm worried what the heck is happening
-
this is really terrible. sent an email, let's hope this goes well. :(
if this guy dies that'll be really terrible! i hate how none of the news seems to be covering this story either
-
i don't want to turn this into a death penalty topic but i'm going to say the obvious in that this makes no sense at all and i am unsure how anyone could agree with this. i don't know why it's even legal to get the death penalty for a case with no physical evidence whatsoever (in other words, circumstantial evidence only) not to mention the case looks very shoddy.
do they have something in for this guy (some kind of corruption)? i can't see a reasonably intelligent person saying this man should be executed.

it sounds like his friend committed the murder from what the two other witnesses said. maybe he's got a ridiculous sense of NO SNITCHIN or he doesn't want to out his friend.
or the two more likely options, everyone's downplaying the fact he beat up a homeless guy because, well, that doesn't look good, so his side of the story isn't really a great thing to begin with and/or wikipedia just doesn't know what his side of the story is. this is often the case with...cases.
also if you really think INNOCENT MEN DONT DIE ahahahahahahahahahhaahahahaha dude just google the west memphis 3. just...just do it. I actually read every aspect of the case file in that case.
-
done and done
this is ridiculous
-
dammit steel i cant stop reading the wiki article for WM3 but its scaring me and im alone and its dark and i keep hearing someone whistle outside. i have my chef's knife sitting next to me and im gonna finish that article.
i sent a fax as well. the death penalty is the worst thing ever i cannot believe people can be so rash when utilizing it. this is something that would require HARD, SUBSTANTIAL evidence. like, 100% doubtless the person did it and the crime is ridiculously heinous.
i bet if the bum was the one that was killed this wouldnt be happening, its only because it was a cop that died that this is happening.
-
wow guys its been 20 years, this shit don't seem to matter anymore.........sounds terrible but shit guys 20 years in prison is a long time that is one long intteruption to have in your middle years.
-
GR whats scary about west memphis 3? are you a goth kid or something?
-
i was almost shitting myself last execution date, the one that got pulled 2 HOURS before he was about to have some poison slammed into his veins.
anyone who thinks this guy should die is an ig'nant cracker motherfucker, brother's innocent
peace
-
some buds and I are considering going to the protest in downtown later this month. Don't really have anything to add that hasn't been said before but goddamn this case is ridiculous. I really couldn't be more ashamed of the terrible excuse we have for justice in my state.
-
ahaha no im not goth its just reading about MURDER and MR BOJANGLES is just scary! i dunno i scare easily with that kind of stuff like right now i just looked behind me for NO REASON
like reading about that kind of stuff my brain just plays the unsolved mysteries theme softly and robert stack becomes my internal monologue.
-
http://www.gasupreme.us/pdf/s07a1758.pdf
the whole thing is really unclear, but there's something fishy about 'officer macphail' in butts county court on the internet. i really hope this isn't some something awful power play
i thought you couldn't prove guilt without a doubt just from WITNESSES. like i haven't seen anything evidence wise like oh btw it was cole's gun or yeah we found gun fire residue all over his face. everything is wrong with this
-
ahaha no im not goth its just reading about MURDER and MR BOJANGLES is just scary! i dunno i scare easily with that kind of stuff like right now i just looked behind me for NO REASON
Ya reading Mr Bojangles was the creepiest part... seriously MR BOJANGLES? It seems like a horror film. I was reading about it in the library and had to stop.. it's interesting though seeing how loosely evidence can be construed as pointer toward three people that way... pretty fucked up that the guy bragged about the murders though.
And yes this is pretty savage... I'm going to start going to campus Amnesty International meetings I think, maybe to see what ways to help. This state is pretty IN LOVE with executions though. I sit by an ROTC guy who blames crime and delinquency on the stringent use of capital punishment.
-
abolish the death penalty
-
there's no such thing as an innocent man ¬¬
-
okay i read the stuff and i sent the e-mail. i don't know what else i can do. this has got me thinking about joining amnesty international though.
-
sorry to bump but I found this fascinating article about the death penalty on SA and I had to share it: http://the-urban-monk.livejournal.com/593181.html

This may very well be the case. Cops get apeshit when violence against an officer is involved.
-
That was an amazing article though

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/10/24/troy.davis.stay.execution/index.html?iref=mpstoryview
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay of execution Friday for a Georgia death row inmate who had been scheduled to die on Monday, his attorney said.
...
The court granted a 25-day stay so Davis' legal team can file a new habeas corpus brief with a lower court, Davis' attorney, Jay Ewart, told CNN.
-
That's fucked up, he's been in jail for that long and now they decide to freaking kill him...I already sent a letter even though I'm not from the US I faked the address and hope they considered my letter anyway.
-
I say kill him.

holy fuck whats wrong with you. lying on shit like this might get the whole thing thrown out because HEH PEOPLE LIED MAYBE YOU JUST GOT A BUNCH OF MICKEY MOUSES...JUST LIKE ACORN...
I say kill him.
lmaoooooooooo no not really.
-
I don't think there is any way they could find out and really its not like you wouldn't see that with as much internet attention this is getting.
they way I see it this guy is a part of the human race and our foreign brother has just as much a right as anyone else to voice his opinion even if he's doing so illegally, nothing like acorn.
-
they probably won't find out but please don't possibly fuck up the last resort this guy will have just to E-SUPPORT.
-
i got an e-mail saying troy davis got a stay of execution and he won't be executed on the 27th as was planned.
-
yeah! ASE posted it. I'm going to look into it a bit and see what's up with amnesty/other movements for his life.
-
fun facts from lf:
seven of nine witnesses against him have recanted their testimony, with two claiming that the police had pressured them to testify against him. Prosecutors presented no physical evidence and no murder weapon, and three witnesses have said another man admitted to the murder.
quote:
One of the recanting witnesses, Dorothy Ferrell, said she was on parole when she testified and was afraid that she’d be sent back to prison if she didn’t agree to finger Mr. Davis.
She said in an affidavit: “I told the detective that Troy Davis was the shooter, even though the truth was that I didn’t know who shot the officer.”
Another witness, Darrell Collins, a teenager at the time of the murder, said the police had “scared” him into falsely testifying by threatening to charge him as an accessory to the crime. He said they told him that he might never get out of prison.
“I didn’t want to go to jail because I didn’t do nothing wrong,” he said.
quote:
At least three witnesses who testified against Mr. Davis (and a number of others who were not part of the trial) have since said that a man named Sylvester “Redd” Coles admitted that he was the one who had killed the officer.
quote:
Mr. Coles, who was at the scene, and who, according to authorities, later ditched a gun of the same caliber as the murder weapon, is one of the two witnesses who have not recanted.
from what I can tell yep there's a stay of execution. you'll probably get an email though when it comes time again, in which case if you get it before me feel free to bump this!
-
i at least signed the e-petition thing and all that. i'm assuming checking that box will keep me updated on this case via email?
and i read the whole article on the west memphis 3. it's pretty fucking haunting how they have so much evidence (or rather, so little against the 3) and all the police fuckups. it's like the whole police force and others of the whole town had it set out to get those 3.
it's like one of those eerie movies/shows with a small town where everyone is running their own cult/is fucking crazy. the whole "government" of the town seemed to pin everything up to the three guys, and there's so many blatant errors it sounds like it was planned.
i know that sounds pretty fucking crazy but the whole case is insane.
-
Just kidding. Love Jesus.
