Title: Guild Wars Megathread v3.0 [3rd YEAR OF GUILD WARS WOO]
Post by: HL on October 29, 2007, 10:48:07 pm
Guild Wars is a CCORPG (Cooperative Competitive Online Role Playing Game) made by ArenaNet. It is their first game.

Here is what makes Guild Wars unique:
*Free to Play game with quality of Pay to Play games in the MMORPG genre
*PvE actually has a storyline, with cinematics etc. And pretty awesome Voice Actor's too!
*Indepth FAIRLY OK balanced PvP which is pretty simple to learn, but very hard to master.
*There is little to no forced grind. (and grinding doesn't give you much of a benefit (and if it does its only in PvE) over players.)
*: The max level is 20, but its really easy to get there, and once you reach it thats where the game actually STARTS cause the difficulty and cool quests and shit kick in.
*8 slot Skill Bar. You can change skills in towns and there is like ~1000 of skills too, so yeah.

Current Players on GamingW:
HL
Raziel
spacelion
lord_scott_
warv
nikuru
goldenratio
farah
Eric
Severus
Rowain

So this is a topic to ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GAME / DISCUSS / ETC

EDIT: thehunter has trial keys if you need some.

How much is it to play these a month?

Also this makes me miss Hiretsukan. I remember helping him apply for his job there.

Hat stealing emu-creature..... *sigh*

edit: oh the top of your first post says free. is that right?

you buy them and its completely free (except for other chapters+expansions/stuff you can buy in the online store which is just ADDITIONAL CHARACTER SLOTZ at this point)

and hiret did get the job, but he quit awhile ago.

EDIT: Oh yeah and here is a video of some okay Guild Wars PvP this is 4v4 Random Arenas (randomly made teams)

Yeah, last I checked Hiret was working on IMVU.

I've been kind of interested in Guild Wars for awhile, but I haven't really had the free time to dive into it (other games are always coming out and sucking up my time, so I don't get around to trying some of these older games).  It seems like a neat idea, and I think the core design of an MMO that doesn't revolve around a payment scheme has every chance of being fundamentally better.

Well to me, I like how even though the game is B2PF2P, they still managed to keep the grind 99% optional, and grinding doesnt give a bonus / a very dumb or low bonus (YOUR LOCKPICKS BREAK LESS). Max level is easy to reach and thats where the game really begins! (by the time you're level 20 there is still like 70% of the game to go in Prophecies)

Also they have a fantastic server, their server like...NEVER goes down. They dont have to do weekly 6 hour maintence or anything. I think the server has been up and stable for like a year now with no down time, and it is like that even when they pull in lots of people during holiday events like right now too. (I think Lions Arch is up to 64 American districts, which is like 4096 people all in the same CITY)

EDIT:
So I went to see Mad King Thorn who is an NPC who hands out Halloween gifts today, every 3 hours, and there was a total of 140 Districts in America/Europe/International combined, which is 8960 people in the same place!!

there's nothign like "you can't go to x part" in any campaign. all the campaigns are separate, but you CAN take a high level character from one campaign to another through quests. only things you will be missing out on will be the new skills added in those expansions, Heroes, being able to join a faction and such things.

you can still enjoy the game if you buy Prophecies or Factions or any other expansion just by itself though.

oh ok, they are all standalone but you can link characters between them? interesting.........

kinda like cov/coh then

well the original is still the cheapest so i think i will try that one

edit: actually ebay has a cheap copy of factions, so one more thing: if you get factions but dont have the original, how many classes can you pick from? factions unlocks 2 more, but if you dont have the original can you only pick from those two or what?

You get the core 6 + Assassin Ritualist.

Jester, I do have a trial key as I said at the end of my first post if you would like to try it out? See if you like it etc?

EDIT: I really recommend Prophecies first btw. Its the most new player friendly.

But each campaign is stand-alone yes, but if you connect them your characters from a campaign can travel to another campaigns areas and do its stuff too.

WarV: Awesome! Cyndr was a bitch. We need to group for some dungeons or do Hard Mode sometime.

EDIT:
Oh yeah

Prophecies = Longest storyline, most content (argueably) from the get go, very long to level 20
Factions = shortest storyline, more high end content than Prophecies, easy to get to Level 20
Nightfall = inbetween of the above 2
Eye of the North = don't worry about this for now

So yeah, that'd be really awesome, thanks!

In my opinion I would go for Nightfall unless you plan on buying them all at one point. If you just want one Nightfall is the best for the fact that it has alot of powerful skills and it has heros. You also get Paragons and Dervs unlocked which are great classes.

Becarful on buying it from ebay since when you buy Guild Wars you are really buying a CD-key for an account. You can download the client online from the Guild Wars main site, but you need a key in order to actually play in factions. If someone already used the key then your SOL.

Also EotN is not $50 when I bought it. I think you need to check out the price.

I played the 10 hour trial DN gave me and I did the first 3 or 4 missions in Prophecies. It's pretty cool.

The controls are very, very weird if you are used to other MMOs. You can't jump, which I think is a huge setback for the interactivity in the world (you also can't fall off cliffs or anything like that), but the world itself is nice and detailed. The pretty areas are really pretty, and the drab areas are really depressing (which is good for atmosphere but bad because you actually get depressed and want to leave).

The gameplay is pretty good, for a MMO, anyway. You only have 8 skills at a time so you have to change and prepare them in towns before going out to fight things. You get like a zillion skills very very fast, too. It's more interesting in the actual fights, too. There are a lot of them, though. More than most MMOs, it feels like. Every corner presents 5 more scorpions to kill.

Apparently the game really starts at max level, which is really weird for me, but hey what are you gonna do. I think I'm gonna buy Prophecies and see how that works. If it's good even at level 20 I'll think about the others.

handsome lamb your class over view can be a little misleading. Pets on rangers can be very powerful, they can do more melee dmg then some warriors since they don't have adren and can spam more. The only draw back is you have to keep yourself and you pet alive. You also didn't give an example of a thumper.

Ritualist also do a TON more then spirt spam. I think of them as more of a like a Monk 2.0
They have Weapon spells which act like enchantments, but they can't be removed. Also they can out right heal others and can ever spike for dmg. You can also say more about the assassin as well.

Pets generally suck in PvP, and yeah I didn't give an example of a thumper etc. And Ritualists are spirit spammers mostly, they blow shit up at VoD in PvP with Splinter Weapon and Ancestor's, and I could say more about the assassin, but the class overview was a generally overview not an indepth one. Necros can be more than hexmancers and MM's too but I'm not going to go indepth and list everrrry single thing the class can do, just what they are popular for.

I pretty much only pvp on wow and even though I can't help but compare every fucking detail of this game to wow it's quite interesting still. How long would it take to get a character ready for 20 pvp or whatever? I'm not interested in pve one bit CUTSCENES or not.

Isn't the 8 abilities at a time thing a little limiting and gay or does it work fine really? I can see myself thinking GIMME BIGGER BARS FFS but then I have one hundred million spells in wow it might be nice to have a change.

My biggest issue (this issue is big) with the game is that people are actually allowed to call their characters shit like  I WILL CAST A SPELL. I can't see that not annoying me.

Post by: Jester on November 11, 2007, 10:20:54 pm
well mark the spells thing is uh.. on purpose. the game is built around the fact you can only use 8 abilities at one time. so yeah, that isn't a factor at all.

and the name thing i dunno. tbh i find it cooler that i am able to call my guy whatever i want rather than limited to ONE WORD FANTASY NAME and think it's a worthy payoff having to put up with Buffy the Vampire rather than Buffysummerthevampiresl who I actually saw in WoW once.

Hmmmm, I just don't see Buffysummers (which is the wow name length limit) being worse than X Autumn Leaves X oh god I bet they let you have the Xs and everything.

I knew 8 spells THAT'S IT was a design choice, like it didn't happen by accident. I meant more does it play well. I guess if 8 spells is what you're used to and everyone else has 8 spells it's all fine and dandy

Will probably give it a go soon, look out for The Mighty Odin XI

The whole deal with 8 spells makes it more tactical and skillful. If you could have every spell in the game on one guy, then the game would be horrid and unbalanced.

tbh you only really have to put up with your friends names anyway, everywhere is party-instanced apart from towns (which are really literally just SELL GET QUESTS GO areas) so yeah the name feature is really not that disasterous

and on the skills it plays fine. it's just a game thing, it plays the same as any other mmo with their little quirks like CAN'T CHANGE EQUIP IN BATTLE etc.
Title: Guild Wars Megathread v3.0 [3rd YEAR OF GUILD WARS WOO]
Post by: Grogrog on November 12, 2007, 01:33:09 am
The point of the 8 skills is you build a strategy. You don't have all the skills avaliable. You pick what skills go together, and grab one elite skill, and build your "build" around it. Hell, you could even say you have 7 skills avaliable, because if you don't take Resurection Signet into random arenas then people will probably call you a noob. But yeah you definitely have enough skills at your disposal.
Title: Guild Wars Megathread v3.0 [3rd YEAR OF GUILD WARS WOO]
Post by: HL on November 12, 2007, 02:16:02 am
Yeah Mark, the eight skill thing is probably the weirdest but best part of Guild Wars, espically in PvP. It seems really limiting and less strategy-like when you look at WoW which has tons of skills and item ability's flying around all the time, but I'd say its more strategic, because if you fight say...a Warlock in WoW's PvP, you can pretty much guess what he's going to do pretty quickly because all Warlocks have access to the same skills, it pretty much just becomes an issue of "is he Destruction, Demonology, or Affliction..." overall. But in Guild Wars, with 100+ skills for the Necromancer and 100+ skills for whatever his secondary is, there is a ton of possibility's on what that Necro could be. He could be degen, life steal (ignores most Monk protection spells), minion master, hexmancer, etc. And even in those different subtypes there is many different builds for each of them.

That isn't to say you won't find a lot of people running the same build though, you will find people who run "cookie-cutter" builds, just like you find people in WoW running the same talent builds because they are optimal builds that win a lot.

Also if you got Prophecies, it would take maybe 30 hours to get to Level 20, but even then you won't (generally, you could get lucky) have max stat equipment either. Factions is quicker, NF is a bit longer than Factions but shorter than Prophecies, however I always recommend Prophecies since it basically teaches you the entire game (even the PvP modes) in a decent story mode. Its also the only campaign that will give you skills for quests, so its cheaper to be PvP ready as well.

Hmm seeing all of this discussion almost makes me want to get back into it. Is Eye of the North worth getting, or should I just wait for Guild Wars 2?

Also I think I already have DN on my friends list, but I main a 20 SS Necro, unless they nerfed that and I need to get one of my other guys up to 20.

SS Necro still works fine.

I'd recommend getting Factions/Nightfall first unless you have them already, then get EotN. I only really recommend EotN to people who have all 3, simply because EotN's PvE is actually pretty hard and other campaign skills help greatly in it. And the skills it does add aren't really into the PvP metagame yet cause most of them aren't too hot.

EDIT: NP, whats your IGN? I cleaned my friend's list like a couple months back.

Well I have Factions, but I got bored with it pretty quickly (seriously the new classes aren't that fun). I played the open Beta for Nightfall but I don't actually have it. I never really got into PVP when I played it before, and I doubt I will this time, so that doesn't really affect me much.

They really buffed up the new classes so they dont suck so much ass as they did when it was released, but I find Factions in general boring (got it for Alliance Battles), Nightfall is really really good though and the new classes in it are pretty good. Plus so many skills in it are realllllly good. I'd recommend getting NF for sure. NF added a lot of utility spells to the Necromancer, and gave it some new Minion Master capabilities, EotN added a lot of strong Hex's to their arsenal. The NF skills that got added for Necros see a lot of play tho.

If Jester bought a boxed version of Prophecies it should of came with one, but if not you can PM thehunter for one. (ask if he has a Prophecies one!)

EDIT: Oh yeah, since I know you like PvP Mark, here's a good PvP video of Guild versus Guild, which is one of the two high level PvP areas in the game (there is also Hero's Ascent, but GvG gets more recognition and is used for tournaments etc)

Its split into 3 parts (for a total of 3 hours of footage), and is in DivX format, this was aired on US TV, but is up for anyone to watch. It is of one of ArenaNet's world tournaments. It explains how GvG works, and has interviews with the players and gameplay footage etc.

They actually upgraded that feature so now you can see what your cloths look like before you dye them. You can also see how different dye mixtures look on your cloths. Its very nice.

Yeah, thanks for that HL and thehunter :D

I had a small go today, I rolled a ranger. It gave me two options: "roleplaying faggot" or "pvp masta" so you KNOW what i had to pick but I don't know if I did it right. As I understand it pvp characters are premade level 20 characters with predetermined stat points/gear or whatever that you can only enter pvp instances with and roleplaying characters are ones you can do anything on but start from level 1. Is that right? If so is there any benefits to rolling a character from scratch for me?

All I did so far was to speak to all the Masters of Learn to Play and play some trial arenas with some bot friends against bot enemies but the game seems quite cool. The controls are REALLY unnatural for me at the moment, it's the WORST that I can't swing my camera around with left click while I'm attacking. Seriously, is there anyway I can do this as I would in wow? The camera seems DETERMINED not to let me see anything good, when I start shooting it sometimes swings to the side and shit to give me a better look at my characters chest but no opponents. The only thing I've found useful in this department is Z to look behind me.

That guild vs guild looks pretty great. Am I right in thinking you get different abilities in the different games? Doesn't that affect pvp at all, like DAMN I WISH I HAD EXPANSION N THEN I COULD HAVE MORTAL STRIKE? Or have they made it so that builds made with prophecies abilities can be just as effective as ones in the rest

the way arrows work with damage and shit changing depending on height advantage is fucking cool.

The camera will auto move unless you hold down the right mouse button, which can be annoying sometimes but you get used to it. The controls ARE pretty weird, but when you get used to them its really fluid and natural!

Also I would recommend you do SOME PvE for the class/subclass you're most interested in because you will unlock item mods and skills a TON faster than you ever will in PvP, which is the main advantage to PvEing.

As for the skills, yes, there is a set of skills that every campaign has called the "Core" skills, and Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall all add their own skills to the game. There are lots of builds that require X skill from Y campaign mind you, and you won't be able to compete at the highest level without having all 4 games because thats just the way it is, its not that say you're less effective, its just that all the reallllllly good builds have skills from multiple campaigns! You can play low level with only 1 campaign easy though (you can win in RA with just core skills actually) I would recommend you keep playing a bit to see if you really like it though obviously. The online store is going to be adding a PvP pack sometime "soon"(TM) according to Anet that will let you unlock all the skills/gamemodes/item mods/heroes so you can compete without buying the PvE mode if that is what you so desire. I don't know when that'll be though! :<

Also, I also like the arrows height change and stuff too, its really neat how the arrow system works, it feels a lot more natural compared to WoW's, but then again in WoW your arrows always hit, whereas your arrows can be dodged in GW.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I can do a Faction Farm with you. If you get good teams you can get 6000 Balthazar Faction per day (its the cap in the training arena you faction farm) by doing it, which is enough to buy 6 non-Elite skills (1,000 faction per skill), or 2 Elite Skills (3,000 per skill), or 6 basic items mods (1,000 per skill).

You said you rolled a ranger, I'd recommend you get Savage Shot and Whirling Defense thru a Priest of Balthazar as your first two skills once you get 2,000 Balth Faction. Savage lets you interrupt another player's action, and Whirling protects you while you lay a trap. Its a really really really simple Ranger build, but it works. *shrugs*

EDIT EDIT: Oh yeah Mark, you can hit B in an outpost and view Guild versus Guild matches in Observer. Its a really fucking awesome feature.

I ould recomend doing alot of Heroes Ascent before you do Guild Vs Guild. GvG is very tough and it can take awhile to get good at it. Not to mention only low rated guilds would let you GvG with them if you just started.

I Guild Wars and the Factions expansion, I use to play ALOT(clocked in over 100 hours). But once I got a character up to level 20(If I remember right he was a Ranger/Mesmer), my character totally sucked it up in PvP. So I started another, then got disctracted and stopped playing basically because my character sucked. Then I bought the Factions when it came out, played again maybe another 20-30 hours or so and quit again. Last I played was about 6 month's ago, but I am starting to get back into it again.

*Edit: Woah, how many expansions are out now? I have the original, and Factions.. Factions just came out like a year ago when I bought it.*

Prophecies + Nightfall if you want the best "competitive skills", since Nightfall skills see a lot of play, however Prophecies + Factions is good if you want to play Assassin + Ritualist. Factions + Nightfall is good for Assassin/Ritualist/Paragon/Dervish since those 2 campaigns have all their competitive skills, their Eye of the North skills arent that great...

Eventually you'll want to get all 4 though!

Recently the Bonus Mission Packs promotion finally pulled thur and those that were able to ment the requirments of it got four very unique new missions each featuring a character from Guild Wars lore. Saddy if you are new to guild wars will not beable to get this right now, but I will review it anyway. Now in no real order:

Turi's Mission:
Turis Ossa is known in Guild Wars as beating Palawa Joko, but what most people on't know is that he then went on and built a portal to the Hall or Heros. This pissed off all the dead warriors that died to get there so they killed him. Since they couldn't undo the portal they decided to let people in by having them fight and taking bets on it. That is how Hero's Ascent was born. Also a fun fact is that the Ghostly Hero is in fact the dead Turi  helping people get to the HoH.

Mission: In this mission you get to play as Turi as he fight Joko in Elona. This is actually the easiest of the mission since you get a team of 8 other NPC who are all level 20. Even though its easy it is still fun as you walk up this ridge and get to see this giant battle down below. you fight your way thur monsters till you make it to Joko. You then one vs one Joko on top of a bridge just below the battle field. When you beat him you get to see a cool 300 inspired battle scene.

Togo's Mission:
Master Togo is know in factions as beginning this useless old man who cast spirit rifts on monsters as you protect him in about 9 of the 11 faction missions. Well it seems when he was younger he was ALOT more powerful and actually useful. I will not go into his back story as it is not interesting at all.

Mission:
In this mission Togo is attending the human-tengu peace confers. Then as soon as you enter the temple of the war minister, he betrayers you and sends in a bunch of assassins to kill Togo and all the Tengu.
Togo then becomes Kill Bill as you and one of the Tengu go on the hunt for the Minister of War. Along the way you meet a bunch of guards and assassin that are easy to kill, but then it gets better. You get to fight 4 bosses who are all Kill Bill inspired type fights. You kill the Minister and save the day.

*Post the last two later*

I don't have anything left to do in it anymore. Except buy armor that looks cooler which doesnt matter if you just wanna kill crap like I do.  But yeah, WHATS THE NEW ONE LIKE?!

ya, EotN is the best I love it so much cause its actually hard and the dungeons are cool.

You will want to get EotN for the Hall of Monuments, that way you can earn rewards in GW2 for doing things in GW1, mainly having certain armor sets/weapons, title tracks, etc.

Bwraaa! I forgot about my review of the Bonus Mission Packs.

Anyway here is a small bit on the other two.

Saul's Mission: This mission is about Saul. He was the one who created the White Mantel during the Charr Krytan invasion. If this is based off of a movie like the first two, then I don't have a clue what movie it is. I don't think this is based off any movie myself, but more as a lore serving purpose.

You start with a small team of NPC who range in level. This mission is actually the hardest of all the missions as you can't just run over monsters like the first two. After you take out a group of charr, you must make your way thur shit loads of charr without getting aggroed. This requires timing to make sure you can get your group around each charr group. You keeping doing this till you make it to the end where you face 3 giant charr bosses. After you kill them the "Unseen Gods" apper. They give Saul their "agonizing touch"(Its a power hex skill) and you go on to fight wave after wave of charr. After you killed all the waves the "Unseen Gods" take their pay by killing off all, but the most loyal Mantel. Then to make sure no one finds out, they take Saul away and the mission ends.

Gwen's Mission: Not a whole lot to say about this mission. You start out as Gwen with a few skills that let you play dead, hind, throw a rock that you have in hand. The charr are all gathered around testing their siege weapon(the one found in EotN) on human prisoners. After you see one guy go in, give you the massive hint that you have to throw a rock at a plier to make it fall on the siege weapon, he gets blown up and they send Gwen in. You run around trying not to get hit and then do the said hint. After that the charr get angry and run after Gwen. You then have to run into the tunnel and lock the door preventing the charr from killing you. You run around a tunnel gathering mesmer skills and watching ghost humans fight ghost charr till you get all the skills and make it to the end. When you make it to the end you then run around using all the mesmer skills to not get killed by the charr till you find the vanguard and the mission ends.

I'm personally waiting for GW2.  Though I might make another char... I never created a paragon primary.

I think having every armor in the game would be extremely hard to do and overall not worth it, so I don't believe you sadly.

Don't bother, theHunter's definition of every is crap, he said he did everything in Mass Effect but in reality obviously didn't given his playtime.

and yeah, getting every armor in the game would be the dumbest thing i've ever heard, why did you keep crappy AL8 Ascalon armor or whatever, and more importantly where do you find space for 725 peices of armor? (and 725 is assuming you only took 1 set of each individual type of armor, ie: Charr Hide for Prophecies, in reality if you had every set of armor for each of those classes you'd have some 2000+ armor peices.)

Every basically means "all Elites, Obsidian, and Eotn".  If it was anyone else who played the game they woulda know what I meant. Do I have to spell everything out now or will you continue havinf your id 10 t error?

No, every means every armor.

And Obsidian/EotN IS elite armor.

So lemme get this straight:

You have all of the following:

That is all the elite armors for the classes you listed, you said EVERY, every means EVERY SINGLE ONE. If not, then don't use the word every, ok?

Have you got God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals yet?

EDIT: the problem is when you use the word every, you use it in ridiculous situations. If you're going to say every it should mean its english definition not some weird definition where you cut out half the armors, or half the content of a game for some WEIRD reason. Like you can say "I've gotten 1 of every Elite Armor in the game" THAT WORKS, or "I've done every main objective in the game" THAT works, but saying you've done "everything in the game" and then getting pissy when someone calls you out on not doing that is silly when you're using some definition of every that no one else knows.

I've had sex with every girl in the world.
"lol no you haven't"
yes i did but only the ugly ones!!!!!!

EDIT #2:

Oh yeah, and I am working on God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals, I am pretty close got 28/30 titles maxed, unfortunately I saved the 2 longest titles to max for last...I don't have any elite armors cause elite armors are retarded. Normal shit works just fine kthnx.

<---will be only GWAMM with normal armor.

So you spent over a billion + gold, on buying armor that does nothing for you.

....

And then spent USD to buy character slots to mule all the inventory peices for all those armors, cause theres no other way you'd have room for them.

...

and you got GWAMM tho I am just assuming you're using all wrong again and mean all PvE titles, cause gl trying to max 99% of the PvP ones right now <.<

Some of the elite armors are actaully nice so its not wrong to have one or two sets. I have 4 sets on my Ele, Elite pyromancer, Luxon, Ancient, and Dwarven. Along with a cool pair of Dragon gloves. Right now I am also working on my destroyer gloves.

They are nice but they do nothing for you.

I'll buy them once I get GWAMM, cause GWAMM will do more for me than the elite armor will! (here's to hoping that GWAMM gives you the ability to summon a fucking dragon or something.)

Godddddd, Wisdom is the worst title in the world, seriously.

EDIT:
73 armor sets x 5 slots = 365 inventory slots.

80 slots in storage
45 slots per inventory

Assuming he filled his storage full with armor peices, it would take 6.3 characters of inventory space to fit all those armor peices in. Which means you'd have 7 characters dedicated to holding armor.

Um...yay?

EDIT #2:

Ancient Elementalist?

Snowball Arena - Indepth Guide to Winning
Snowball Arena can be played by talking to a Wintersday Priest in Lion's Arch, Kamadan, or Great Temple of Balthazar.

It is a 4v4 Random Teams PvP mode, race to get 5 presents to your side's god.

Rewards for Winning:
    * 100 Balthazar Faction for each unique kill
    * 50 Balthazar Faction and 3 Candy Cane Shards for winning
    * 50 Balthazar Faction for a Flawless Victory
    * 50 Balthazar Faction for 5 and 10 Consecutive Wins
    * Gladiator points are NOT awarded while participating in this arena.
    * 10 points toward the Gamer title track are awarded for each victory

A Look at the Skills:
Not Dependant on Class:
*Snowball: 1s Recharge Time. You throw a slow-moving snowball at target foe. That foe takes 50 damage if it hits.

This is pretty much your standard attack. Use it when needed.

*Mega Snowball: 4 Adrenaline cost, 1s Recharge Time. You throw a very slow-moving snowball at target foe. That foe is knocked down and takes 75 damage if it hits.

This is useful, but a neat trick is to use it when you are Dazed. It can't be easily interrupted for some strange reason!

*Snow Down the Shirt: 3/4s Activation Time, 20s Recharge Time. For 20 seconds, whenever target touched foe takes any damage while suffering from this Hex, that foe is interrupted.

Use it on present carriers so with Dazed they can't get off their healing.

*Hidden Rock: 2s Activation Time, 10s Recharge TIme. Your next snowball knocks down target foe and causes Daze.

Useful. Use it WHENEVER you can. Target present carriers and steal their present!

*Avalanche (Dwayna side only) : 1s Activation Time, 30s Recharge Time. Target foe and all nearby foes are Crippled for 10 seconds.

Amazing. Use this on flag carriers.

*Yellow Snow (Grenth side only) : 2s Activation time, 4s Recharge time. Lose one Condition. Your next snowball causes Disease for 10 seconds.

Complete and utter crap.

*Ice Fort: 1s Activation Time, 60s Recharge time. For 10 seconds, you block all incoming projectiles. Ice Fort ends if you move.

Useful when you have a present.

*"Mmmm. Snowcone!": 60s recharge time. You are healed for 300 Health, and all your attacks are disabled for 10 seconds.

Use only if you are carrying a present or under the effects of Ice Fort.

As for Class Specific Skills...
Warrior: Very very very useful. Combos with Mega Snowball, useful for present carriers. Its one of the best class specific skills.

Ranger: Hmm...you can use it while carrying a bundle, and it can't be easily interrupted while Dazed. Also, it deals more damage than Snowball over time to an entire enemy team. Handy.

Elementalist: Combos with Avalanche if you're on Dwayna for amazing present carrier ownage.

Ritualist: Useful if placed right. Otherwise? Complete crap.

Necromancers: Horrible. Just horrible.

Paragon: Worse than Holiday Blues.

Mesmer: Good for the interrupt, and Blind makes projectiles (Snowballs) stray from their target, making them easier to dodge. Plus its a nice cover condition.

Monk: Amazingly useful.

Assassin: Crap. Don't even bother.

Dervish: They both suck.

Tips:
    * Before the doors open, pre-load Hidden Rock. This will allow you to knock down the first opponent you attack.
    * When the game starts, it is common to spread out so each player is coving a potential present spawn point. This way, once the present spawns, someone will be nearby to pick it up.
    * The Target Closest Item bind (default ";") is extremely useful for locking onto presents. Follow with the Interact Action bind (default spacebar) to run and pick it up.
    * The easiest way to steal a present is to use a Hidden Rock loaded Snowball or Mega Snowball when adjacent to the carrier. Target Nearest Item and pick it up before they have a chance to recover.
    * Long distance Snowballs, especially Mega Snowballs can be dodged even if you have a present. Target the player throwing snowballs at you and time your sideways movement to dodge.
    * The snare effect from the frozen stream can sometimes be avoided even when picking up a present if you immediately start moving as soon as the pick up animation begins.
    * The Ice Fort is useful to prevent knockdown when you know your opponent is about to hit you with a Hidden Rock. It will still drop your present, but use the Target Closest Item to immediately pick it up again. Remember, you can still use actions while in the fort, so use it to ready your own glyphs or activate spirits.
    * The combination of Snow Down the Shirt and the dazed effect of Hidden Rock will render the player helpless if kept under pressure. It is very useful when defending your present carrier against an opponent. The Ritualist's Jack Frost can also act as the cover pressure for this.
    * Avalanche is very useful to help delay an enemy present carrier. If you're crippled from Avalanche, use Yellow Snow to remove it.
    * Knock down players on the frozen stream to guarantee a short snare from it.
    * While blacked out from Snowcones, you can still body block to hinder a present carrier's advance.

Yeah! It's actually really fun too, especially if you get a group who knows what they are doing!

It's a nice diversion.

Update - Thursday March 6
Skill Updates

    Guild vs. Guild

        * Victory or Death: reduced damage increased to 10%; this skill now reduces healing by 10%.
        * Victory is Ours: both teams now get this bonus at Victory or Death, regardless of how many NPCs either team has; increased damage to 20%.

Very nice....

    Assassin

        * Shroud of Silence: decreased duration to 1..3 seconds.
        * Shadow Prison: decreased duration to 1..7 seconds.
        * Dark Prison: decreased duration to 1..6 seconds.
        * Siphon Speed: increased recharge to 30 seconds; decreased duration to 5..15 seconds; this skill now recharges 50% faster if cast on a moving foe.
        * Augury of Death: increased recharge to 20 seconds.

Lol no more instant gib Assassins.

    Mesmer

        * Imagined Burden: decreased duration to 8..20 seconds.
        * Enchanter's Conundrum: functionality changed to: "For 10 seconds, target foe casts enchantments 100% slower. When this hex is applied, that foe takes 30..120 damage if not under the effects of an enchantment spell."
        * Psychic Instability: this skill has been moved to the Fast Casting attribute; decreased casting time to .25 seconds; functionality changed to: "Interrupt target foe's action. If that action was a spell that foe is knocked down. (50% failure chance with Fast Casting 4 or less.)"
        * Power Lock: decreased recharge to 12 seconds.
        * Cry of Frustration: decreased Energy cost to 10.
        * Simple Thievery: decreased casting time to .25 seconds; increased recharge to 10 seconds; decreased duration to 5..20 seconds; changed functionality to: "Interrupt target foe's action. If that action was a skill, that skill is disabled for 5..20 seconds, and Simple Thievery is replaced by that skill."
        * Power Leak: decreased Energy lost to 3..17.

Some buffs, some nerfs....should be interesting.

    Necromancer

        * Foul Feast: decreased casting time to .25 seconds; this skill has been moved to the Soul Reaping attribute; changed functionality to: "All conditions are transferred from target other ally to yourself. For each condition acquired in this way, you gain 0..45 Health and 0..3 Energy."
        * Enfeebling Blood: decreased Energy cost to 1, decreased casting time to 1 second; increased recharge to 8 seconds.
        * Enfeeble: decreased casting time to .25 seconds; increased duration to 10..30 seconds.
        * Plague Signet: changed functionality to: "Transfer all negative conditions with their remaining durations lengthened by 100..200% from yourself to target foe."
        * Strip Enchantment: functionality changed to: "Remove 1..2 enchantments from target foe. If an enchantment is removed, you steal 5..65 Health."
        * Weaken Armor: decreased casting time to 1 second; this skill now affects all adjacent foes.
        * Plague Sending: decreased Energy cost to 1.
        * Wail of Doom: decreased Energy cost to 1; decreased recharge to 10 seconds; decreased duration to 1..4 seconds; changed skill type to hex; changed functionality to: "For 0..4 second, all of target foe's attributes are set to 0."
        * Rip Enchantment: functionality changed to: "Remove 1 enchantment from target foe and that foe suffers from Bleeding for 5..25 seconds."
        * Vampiric Swarm: decreased casting time to 2 seconds; decreased recharge time to 8 seconds.
        * Deathly Swarm: decreased casting time to 2 seconds; increased recharge time to 6 seconds.

I like where Necros are going....wait what? Wail of Doom? Arcane Echo it? 8 out of 10 seconds 1 person is basically disabled. WOO. Totally overpowered imo.

    Elementalist

        * Glyph of Lesser Energy: canceled spells now count as a use of the Glyph's effect.
        * Glyph of Energy: decreased Energy reduction to 10..35; canceled spells now count as a use of the Glyph's effect.
        * Ward Against Melee: increased recharge to 30 seconds.
        * Blinding Flash: decreased duration to 3..8 seconds.
        * Mind Blast: decreased Energy gain to 1..8; increased recharge to 3 seconds.
        * Flame Djinn's Haste: decreased duration to 8..14 seconds; increased recharge to 20 seconds; the skill now recharges 50% faster if you damage a foe with it.
        * Rodgort's Invocation: increased recharge to 8 seconds.
        * Lightning Orb: functionality changed to: "Send out a lightning Orb that strikes target foe for 10..100 lightning damage and that foe has Cracked Armor for 5..20 seconds if it hits. This spell has 25% armor penetration."
        * Shock Arrow: increased recharge to 8 seconds; functionality changed to: "Send out a Shock Arrow that strikes for 5..50 lightning damage if it hits. If Shock Arrow strikes an attacking foe, you gain 1..9 Energy. This spell has 25% armor penetration."
        * Aftershock: removed the long aftercast.
        * Ward Against Melee: removed the long aftercast.
        * Ward Against Foes: removed the long aftercast.
        * Inferno: removed the long aftercast.
        * Flame Burst: removed the long aftercast.
        * Frozen Burst: removed the long aftercast; increased recharge to 8 seconds.
        * Crystal Wave/Teinai's Crystals: removed the long aftercast.
        * Shockwave: removed the long aftercast.
        * Double Dragon: removed the long aftercast.

The removal of after cast, plus the buff to Lightning Orb + Flame Djinn's are interesting. I don't like the nerf to the E/D template in PvP but...

    Monk

        * Heal Party: increased casting time to 2 seconds.
        * Guardian: increased recharge time to 4 seconds.
        * Reversal of Damage: decreased recharge time to 3 seconds.
        * Symbol of Wrath/Kirin's Wrath: removed the long aftercast.

Meh.

    Warrior

        * Magehunter's Smash: increased adrenaline cost to 7 strikes; functionality changed to: "If this attack hits, target foe is knocked down. If your target is under the effects of an enchantment, this attack cannot be blocked."
        * Axe Rake: decreased adrenaline cost to 5 strikes.
        * Axe Twist: decreased adrenaline cost to 5 strikes.
        * Gash: decreased adrenaline cost to 6 strikes.
        * "Shields Up!": increased armor gain to 60; functionality changed to: "For 5..11 seconds, you and all party members within earshot gain 60 armor against incoming projectile attacks."
        * "Watch Yourself!": functionality changed to: "Party members within earshot gain +5..25 armor for 10 seconds. This shout ends after 1..3 incoming attack."
        * Lion's Comfort: decreased adrenaline cost to 4 strikes; functionality changed to: "All of your signets are disabled for 12 seconds. You are healed for 50..110 Health, and gain 0..3 strike of adrenaline."
        * Sprint: decreased recharge time to 15 seconds.
        * Mokele Smash: decreased recharge time to 12 seconds; increased adrenaline gain to 1..3

Warrior's don't even need half these buffs, but ok.

    Ranger

        * Pin Down: decreased recharge time to 8 seconds.
        * Crippling Shot: increased recharge time to 2 seconds.
        * Hunter's Shot: decreased activation time to 1 second.

Useless.

    Dervish

        * Pious Assault: increased activation time to normal weapon attack activation time.
        * Mystic Regeneration: decreased duration to 5..20 seconds; increased recharge time to 12 seconds.
        * Wounding Strike: functionality changed to: "If this attack hits, target foe suffers from Bleeding for 5..20 seconds. If you are under the effects of an enchantment, target foe also suffers from a Deep Wound for 5..20 seconds."
        * Grenth's Aura: decreased duration to 10 seconds; increased recharge time to 25 seconds; increased Energy cost to 15; increased casting time to 2 seconds.

Thank god.

    Paragon

        * Mending Refrain: increased Energy cost to 10; decreased duration to 15 seconds.
        * Song of Restoration: increased Energy cost to 10; increased recharge to 20 seconds; increased healing to 45..110 Health.
        * Barbed Spear: decreased adrenaline cost to 2 strikes.
        * Blazing Spear: decreased adrenaline cost to 6 strikes.

See above.

    Ritualist

        * Ancestors' Rage: decreased damage dealt to 5..110.
        * Soothing Memories: decreased casting time to .75 seconds; decreased recharge to 4 seconds.
        * Death Pact Signet: now resurrects party member with 15..100% Energy, instead of the caster's current Energy; The energy returned now scales based on your Restoration Magic.

Finally DPS isn't overpowered....and hooray for Ancestors.

General

    * Added a set of player-designed weapons and items that were winners in the 2007Guild Wars Design-A-Weapon Contest.

Yessss

Hero AI

    * Improved hero AI for the skill Broad Head Arrow.
    * Improved hero AI for the skill Warrior’s Endurance.

I don't care.

Bug Fixes

    * Shadow Fang: fixed a bug that caused the duration to incorrectly change based on the Deadly Arts attribute.
    * Fixed a bug that could allow Kurzick players to leave their gated areas early in the Alliance Battle map Kaanai Canyon.
    * Fixed a rare bug that would crash the game server.

The last one is important.

Soooo, unless if this update I'm downloading fixes it, you can use Simple Thievery to steal monster skills.

Players using some of them will crash everyone in the instance.

Fantastic.

EDIT: Such as taking a Bodyguard's Oath of Healing, you crash everyone in a GvG match.

Update, march 13th, 2008
General
[edit] Concise Skill Description Option

    * Guild Wars now supports two types of skill descriptions: traditional and concise. Traditional descriptions maintain the classic style and have been in place since the first campaign. Concise descriptions are a new style, and are generally shorter in length.
    * The first time you log in, you get a message asking if you'd like to keep using traditional skill descriptions or if you'd like to change to concise descriptions. Once you make your selection, login will continue normally, and you won't see the message again. To change the skill description style while in-game, use the General tab in the Options panel. (Menu > Options > General)
    * Example of a traditional description for Defensive Stance:
o For 1..7 seconds, you have +24 armor and you have a 75% chance to block melee and projectile attacks. Defensive Stance ends if you use a skill.
    * Example of a concise description for Defensive Stance:
o (1..7 seconds.) You have 75% chance to block and +24 armor. Ends if you use a skill.
    * If you find any problems with the translations of the concise skill descriptions, or general translation bugs, please report them to:
          o French: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User:Jason_Yu/French_Localization_Bugs
          o German: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User:Jason_Yu/German_Localization_Bugs

[edit] Bug Fixes

    * Fixed a spawn bug that prevented bosses in the Domain of Anguish from appearing if everyone in a party had already completed the Mallyx the Unyielding quest.
    * Fixed a bug in Underworld that sometimes prevented mission failure if a Reaper died too quickly after spawning.
    * Fixed a bug that would sometimes allow Necromancers to cast Putrid Flesh and Feast of Death while having no living minions for the spell to target.
    * Fixed a bug in the Tower of Strength quest within the Fissure of Woe that sometimes caused the Tower Mage to become stuck and never reach the tower.
    * Fixed a bug in the Dajkah Inlet challenge mission that could cause teams to crash after a long time spent in the mission.
    * Fixed a bug that caused some treasure chests to not work if more than one player attempted to open the chest at the same time.
    * Fixed a bug in the Moa’vu’Kaal, Awakened quest in Nightfall that caused the starting NPC to sometimes not display a quest marker even though the quest was available.
    * Fixed a bug that affected various sign posts and redirectors in the Eye of the North, Sifhalla, Olafstead, and Gunner's Hold.

[edit] Miscellaneous

    * The daggers known as Dragon Scythes are now named Dragon Kamas to avoid confusion over their weapon type.
    * The axe known as White Scythe is now named White Reaver to avoid confusion over its weapon type.
    * The second RAWR Cup Tournament is now listed on Tolkano.
    * The Xunlai Tournament House NPC now offers prizes for the February tournament and can be found in the Great Temple of Balthazar, Lion's Arch, Kaineng Center, and Kamadan.

YEAH

Been waiting for concise skill descriptions.

WM vs LuM, Guild Wars World Championship, awesome match. LuM takes anti-physical skills cause they know WM has been running tons of physicals, WM runs like 4 warriors, and still win.

Random question, which I hope you don't mind me asking in the thread, but..

Would anyone wanna start a new character with me? I bought the game awhile back, made it past the searing and gave up from there, because of the difficulty of the quests. I've been wanting to play again real bad, but that searing thing is making me not want to at this point, so I imagine that if I can find someone to start playing with me, I may be able to make it past level 8 or whatever.

I like wow an awful lot but a lot of current aspects of the game are really gay and Tom Chilton, being the infinite asshole that he is, just. doesn't. understand what made the game so good in the first place

so yeah I'm very seriously considering giving guild wars another go because it seems to have absolutely everything I want from an mmo (I know it isn't an mmo) apart from world pvp. I really love world pvp.

Can you clarify some shit about the game for me again DN or whoever else:

Is EVERY DAMN THING in the game apart from towns instanced? I do not like instanced content, this is one of the things that makes me want to punch tom chilton in the dick.

Are the people as gay as they seem in youtube videos of pvp? I watched some ridiculous video of some guy doing WHOA 4V1 or whatever and in chat it was a constant spam of "noob runner" etc etc etc. This is not a big issue since there are people like that in wow and cs and tf2 any game that I care to play

In what appear to be instanced matches teams seem to be able to talk to each other. Doesn't this lead to enormous faggotry?

Is there a duelling/1v1 system? I know the emphasis is on group pvp but I do enjoy duelling.

If there is a duelling system, how balanced? I hear very good things about the game's overall team balance but does it work 1v1 too? For example, one of my 70s on wow is a mage. Versus equally geared and skilled opponents, the only things ACTUALLY BEATABLE 1v1 are warriors, paladins and offspec rogues. Obviously the mage can play a vital part in a 5v5 team but 1v1 it's a very different story.

Is it not very confusing that although you can only have 8 abilites at one time (and I do like this idea now), there are 100s to choose from for each profession? For example, a warlock's casting unstable affliction... I don't know what that is, it's not in the cookie cutter builds I'm used to seeing, I have no idea how to counter it until I see its effect. Does success in guild wars pvp require a ludicrous amount of study?

How big a part of the game is gear? It seems like a small part and I like that so much. I've geared up 2 characters on wow and I'm sick of the whole concept of CLOTHES FOR BETTER FIGHTING.

HL said something ages ago about getting rep with Balthazar or something. Does this game turn into a rep grind? The only thing worse than a rep grind is mote farming and I will not do it.

I saw something about catapults somewhere? are some of the pvp or gvg or whatever instances like SIEGES or whatever? Because that is a large selling point for the next wow expansion and it would tickle me pink if guild wars was already doing it in a probably better way.

edit: how customisable are keybindings and the general UI?

edit again: if you do not have a decent guild to play with (and being an absolute new player at this point I'm guessing I won't) are you forced to play in awful pugs

edit AGAIN, jesus christ: as I understand it there is no seperate realms for EU/US and so on. Doesn't latency cause some problems with this setup?

if you could answer those questions I'd really appreciate it alot :-D

Yes everything is instanced. There is no place where you have a world pve.

Quote
Are the people as gay as they seem in youtube videos of pvp? I watched some ridiculous video of some guy doing WHOA 4V1 or whatever and in chat it was a constant spam of "noob runner" etc etc etc. This is not a big issue since there are people like that in wow and cs and tf2 any game that I care to play

In what appear to be instanced matches teams seem to be able to talk to each other. Doesn't this lead to enormous faggotry?

Depended on the person. Overall there is not alot of insulting, but you will see it. The good thing is you can turn off local chats and just ignore it.

Quote
Is there a duelling/1v1 system? I know the emphasis is on group pvp but I do enjoy duelling.

If there is a duelling system, how balanced? I hear very good things about the game's overall team balance but does it work 1v1 too? For example, one of my 70s on wow is a mage. Versus equally geared and skilled opponents, the only things ACTUALLY BEATABLE 1v1 are warriors, paladins and offspec rogues. Obviously the mage can play a vital part in a 5v5 team but 1v1 it's a very different story.

There is no 1v1 so to speak. The closest thing to 1v1 is hero battles where you have 1 person who controls 3 other heros vs the same thing.

Quote
Is it not very confusing that although you can only have 8 abilites at one time (and I do like this idea now), there are 100s to choose from for each profession? For example, a warlock's casting unstable affliction... I don't know what that is, it's not in the cookie cutter builds I'm used to seeing, I have no idea how to counter it until I see its effect. Does success in guild wars pvp require a ludicrous amount of study?

Well I am unsure of how this effects others who just start the game since I have been playing this game for along time. I don't believe you have to study, but getting out and using the skills helps to learn what they do. If someone uses something on you that you don't know of you can read it up in mid battle, by putting your cursor over the icon in either the dmg meteor or hex bar, if its a hex.

Quote
How big a part of the game is gear? It seems like a small part and I like that so much. I've geared up 2 characters on wow and I'm sick of the whole concept of CLOTHES FOR BETTER FIGHTING.

Gear plays a part in Guild Wars, BUT it is not like how it is in WoW. There is no quote "best gear". Its actaully a very smart systems of runes and armor insigs that change your health, armor, energy, or do things like make different conditions fade faster. You will have people brining different types of weapons and shield to fight different situations. You can't change armor in battle though, but you can change weapons.

Also to note there is no armor farming. Armor itself is cheap unless you want fancy armor. Also if you make a PvP character armor and weapons are free as long as you have the mods unlocked.

Quote
HL said something ages ago about getting rep with Balthazar or something. Does this game turn into a rep grind? The only thing worse than a rep grind is mote farming and I will not do it.

People like to PvP with people who know what they are doing. The lower class players will ask for shit like rank, champ, or bath points. If you grind the stuff you missed the whole point of them anyway. Bath just lets people see if you unlocked everything or not. You should aim to unlock everything with Balth faction if you want to play PvP seriously anyway.

Quote
I saw something about catapults somewhere? are some of the pvp or gvg or whatever instances like SIEGES or whatever? Because that is a large selling point for the next wow expansion and it would tickle me pink if guild wars was already doing it in a probably better way.

There are three catapult GvG maps. They don't move and can't be destroyed, but they must be maned to used and you have to repair them with a repair kit first. They are very powerful as they hit the inside on the guild hall they point at and can kill almost anything in one hit.

Quote
edit: how customisable are keybindings and the general UI?

edit again: if you do not have a decent guild to play with (and being an absolute new player at this point I'm guessing I won't) are you forced to play in awful pugs

edit AGAIN, jesus christ: as I understand it there is no seperate realms for EU/US and so on. Doesn't latency cause some problems with this setup?

if you could answer those questions I'd really appreciate it alot :-D

The interface and keys are fully customizable. If you are new you will most likely be stuck in a noob guild if you take the first random guild that sends you an invite. Just look around first, there are some newbie friendly guilds out there.

There are sperate realms so to speak of for EU/US/ASIA(with a internation realms for all), but these only hold true for PvE and not PvP. Also as of now you can freely go to the other realms.

Yes, and even towns are instanced into districts, this is to prevent griefing such as kill stealing etc from happening.

Quote

That's Random Arenas, and like the teams, the players too are random. You can just laugh at the people who go noob runner because its a legit tactic and its their fault for not bringing 1 of the 192128192192898 CC's in the game.

Quote

Yeah you can talk to each other but I don't know why you would and if someone is being gay you can report them for it.

Quote
Is there a duelling/1v1 system? I know the emphasis is on group pvp but I do enjoy duelling.

You can do 1v1's thru scrimmaging 1v1 in a guild hall, but its not a very good thing here because the balance is awful.

Quote

Not even closed to balanced since its balanced towards a 128 Skill Environment (8v8) and not 16. There is a lot of gimmicks you can run in 1v1's to basically never lose ever and it becomes Rock Paper Scissors.

Does success in guild wars pvp require a ludicrous amount of study?

not really.

The thing is, is that unlike in WoW, Guild Wars has definite skill types (Attack Skills, Enchantments, Hexes, Rituals, Shouts, etc.) that all are taken care of in the same way, just their effects are different. Also, out of the 1000 some skills in the game, there are some of them that obviously don't see play anyways, but it's not like you got to know every skill. There's also an intuitive Effects Monitor that you can quickly read what something does if you have to, and with concise skill descriptions that's even easier now.

Quote

I can create a maxed out level 20 char with 4 maxed weapon sets in under 30s.

Quote
HL said something ages ago about getting rep with Balthazar or something. Does this game turn into a rep grind? The only thing worse than a rep grind is mote farming and I will not do it.

It's not really a grind per se, you get Balthazar Faction to unlock skills/item parts/heroes on your account. You can buy the skill packs + PvP kit in their online store to unlock everything though. It's like just below 50$ for everything, but you'll have everything unlocked.

Quote
I saw something about catapults somewhere? are some of the pvp or gvg or whatever instances like SIEGES or whatever? Because that is a large selling point for the next wow expansion and it would tickle me pink if guild wars was already doing it in a probably better way.

Certain guild halls have catapults, that you can use after repairing them, to deal massive AoE damage to select choke points in the guild hall. It's more of a strategic element, but each guild hall has different ones. Some GH's have spores which slow casting time/attack speed, other's have lava + fire golems to watch out for, etc.

Quote
edit: how customisable are keybindings and the general UI?

Keybindings: fully customizeable.

General UI: you can move/resize every element of it in-game.

Quote
edit again: if you do not have a decent guild to play with (and being an absolute new player at this point I'm guessing I won't) are you forced to play in awful pugs

You'll be forced to pretty much Random Arenas/Hero Battles (1v1, with each person having 3 AI NPCs). I'm working on making a decent GvG guild so maybe that'll turn out great!

Quote
edit AGAIN, jesus christ: as I understand it there is no seperate realms for EU/US and so on. Doesn't latency cause some problems with this setup?

Depends really. Most people stick to their own districts, so it's not like a bunch of Korean moonspeakers are going to come to America for serious play (tho it prolly happens).

I stick to America + International (which is kind of like a district decent for everyone), but if I go to europe its generally not TOO bad.

edit:
also i highly recommend you look for buying the pvp kit + everything in their online store. you'll be allowed access to all pvp types, with everything unlocked, no PvE/faction earning required, just straight up PvP goodness.

This was pretty much how I hoped it worked. If I start playing I really don't want to be the chump who doesn't know to save his Blink for Intercept or whatever the fuck.

I just looked on the PlayNC site and the pvp pack seems to only cost £11.99. Even if I don't like the game that is worth my while, I'll buy that now.

yep! And if you do like it, but don't want to play tonsss to unlock everything with faction, you can buy the chapter + item unlocks too! It's not too bad!

If you want, you can contact me in-game (my name is Fall From Grave) and I will be more than willing to answer questions etc.

I think I made an error here, I made a new account on my email address which apparently I used last time I played (it did not have a problem with this) but then I could not log in with my password when I started the game. So I reset my password and got in and it still has the silly ranger I made with a trial key ages ago but it won't me play. Account management is down for maintenance.

Gay.

ouch.

It'll probably be up soonish, with any hope!

EDIT:
Actually, if I got this right, you created an NCSoft Master Account yeah? It's different from your account info on Guild Wars so it would allow it to be the same info, then you have to add your Guild Wars account info to it, THEN it should work, but if account management is down, idk.

If I was you, I'd just login to your trial account, and on the character select screen, go to the store in the upper right corner, and buy the PvP kit from there. Way faster.

EDIT: oh thats down too, ok. They say it'll last 3 hours, so it'll be up in a couple hours I guess.

HL what am I fucking supposed to be logging in with?

my master account is markandahalf. the pvp pack is on that account
my game account (what?) is markandahalf@plaync apparently
I can only log in with the email address [email protected] which gives me my old trial account

Attempting to contact the playNC support will do nothing but give me a form to create a new account which will only make matters worse still.

Is playNC really this retarded?

have you tried [email protected]?

EDIT:
I don't know too much about this, if you have a messenger or something PM me contact info if you want and we can solve this in real time rather than 94490849018309381902381093890128390 posts or something

So I bought the game and crossed over to post at lvl 5 last night. I'm having a lot of trouble finding anything fun to do, since even though it's an MMO it seems to be built heavily for single player.

My name is Chuck Falcon if anyone wants to do something interesting I suppose.

Also I forgot to mention I reached level 20 a while ago.
Tried to reach Droknar's forge from the beacon's perch but even with humans we tend to get killed pretty fast.

This game isn't an MMO, which is something you need to keep in mind. This game definitely isn't for everybody, and if you thought it was going to be like WoW, or any other MMOs, then you will be let down.

The fun part of tihs game for me was going through the PvE and just earning skills and ability, PvPing along the way, then finally getting to level 20 and just PvPing mostly, having fun with the skills.

Oh well, it's kind of retarded to pay more for a game per month than I pay for heating/water.

Guild Wars is all about playing with friends. They don't have to be your real life friends, but guild mates if you get what I am saying. Pug are normally horrid. You either have people who don't know what to do or they are doing it another way that conflicts with the way others are doing something in the same groups.

Besides that you can also solo(when I say solo I mean you bring heros and hechmen. You should never really do a real solo anymore unless you are green farming), but you can't solo everything in the game. Its just impossible.

You can do just about everything.....everything in NM, 90% of HM.....the only stuff you can't really do is probably stuff like Shiro HM, and the elite areas LoL.

Ok so I got a trial and played GW over the weekend. Holy shit this game rules. I really like the balance they have, and the strategy involved in your 8 skills. I played a Monk/Mesmer as my RP char and that is a really fun combo. I made a PvP char (Monk) last night but didnt actually get to do much. I think I had about 4 or 5 flawless victories in the trial things you do or something i dunno. But yeah I really like how you can just get right into PvP action, or play an RP char for a really nice single player experience.

So anyways I'm probably gonna end up buying this game because its awesome. I kinda just want to get prophecies (the first one?) so I have that 1player. If I buy Nightfall or Factions or the other one or whatever is there still RP chars and all that? I really like the PvP in GW (well what ive seen anyway) but I'd rather have the single player stuff at first so I can get used to all the classes. If really PvP requires me to buy a different game that is fine but I think I want prophecies first.

I can't believe I never tried GW before I can't believe I've wasted so much time and money on WoW. I did a netherspite/prince run in kara last night and we played for maybe 3 hours and didn't down anything. Then it was like 11:00 so I created the PvP char and after about a half hour I did those trials or whatever and totally owned and it was so much fun. GW owns.

Alright well it's pretty confusing when you're used to like....MMORPGS....but:

Prophecies is the 1st one and you should get it first for sure. (I actually recommend you get the Platinum Edition if you can find it, it's Prophecies + Eye of the North for cheaper than if you got both individually.)

Factions + nightfall have both PvE + PvP yes.

You can take any PvE char and go between the different campaigns (if you own them + have added their CD-Key to your account) freely, so yeah!

And if you buy it I will add you to my guild if you want A+++

EDIT:
Basically instead of them being expansions, Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall are all independent games that have their own respective areas/classes/skills/etc, but you can link them together and take characters back and forth between them etc. It's cool. EotN is the only expansion.

p.s. what did you think of that healing class hehehehe

The thing is it isn't even that big of a nerf. The GvG NPCs died easy anyways...

Raziel and I decided we wanted to blow up some NPCs.

This is Raziel killing everything with FIRE.

The NPCs were bugged and kept going between two spots healing themselves forever instead of hurting Raziel. So...Raziel vs 6 eles.

And he won...

hmm I don't fully remember the build by details, but its just a bunch of pbAoEs. You make sure your heros are all together and you let the NPC run into you.

Quote
Rather than introducing another skill update this week, we're finishing a new system to balance key skills separately for PvP and PvE. Within the next few weeks, we'll introduce PvP versions for a handful of skills. These skills will work the same way as normal skills, but have different number values (damage, healing, cost, recharge, and so on). We will do this as sparingly as possible and start with very few skills. So that we don't confuse players, we intend to keep as many skills unchanged as we can.

PvP versions are designed to target only specific skills. With such a system we can revert high-impact nerfs, such as Light of Deliverance and Defensive Anthem, to make them strong again in PvE. When we see something becoming severely imbalanced in PvP, we'd like to avoid harsh PvE nerfs without creating different versions of a large number of skills.

Skills that differ in PvP will have (PvP) at the end of their names when in PvP outposts and matches. These skills will automatically be adjusted within PvP outposts and matches. All players have to do is equip the skill as normal, and it will use the PvP version where appropriate.

We've decided to release our next skill balance update simultaneously with these changes. We can take full advantage of the new skill balancing mechanism and avoid multiple balances over a short time frame.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Developer_Updates

Nice.

I beat Prophecies a while back and I meant to ask, is there only one Deldrimor Talisman available per character (I know you can buy them from others though).
I tried fighting Glint the other day but only got it down to half health before it picked everyone off one by one, we weren't prepared at all.

(Thinly veiled attempt to keep the topic alive)

Cool! Whats your IGN?
see how late I reply to you hahahaha

sorry I got way busy and stopped playing for ages since my computer was crapping out every time. but now I'm hopefully back (new computer) and ready to start again! I wanna play some with GWs since it'd be cooler with people I know (sort of) (plus GW's c00l ), though time zones may make that a problem sometimes. HL: did you say you had a guild?
I have no characters now, and pretty much no experience, so how should I begin? (Don't even know shit about CCORPGs.) I only have Prophecies right now, and will probably stick with that at first since I'm new.

I'll probably have to wait until next month too, since my internet is not so hot right now (stupid brother downloaded a lot).

ps whats a ign

dhhh yeah I kind of thought after I posted it probably mean my name. guess I'm not "down" with your "online gaming" terms.

sweet thanks for that. mesmer sounds cool but too hard for a beginner. I might play ranger or elementalist if they seem not-lame enough.

Mesmer is pretty hard for beginners and isn't too hot in PvE until much later anyways thanks to other campaigns.

Ranger / Elementalist is pretty cool.

http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Skills_by_Campaign the first 2 sections (Core & Prophecies) list every skill you can get for each of the Prophecies classes, so even if you haven't played you can see if something sticks out at you for Rangers / Elementalists.

There's also a secondary class you get to pick too so thats something to think about.

There's no torrents for this stuff.

ok well, that's ok I guess. idk why you want to wait but w/e :d

I'll be out for like an hour or two, so if you get a bit ahead of me that's okay.

Just try to do all the quests that you can, explore the areas, have fun, etc.

edit;
ps what class are you

edit edit:
this is very important, make sure after you do your first quest to get your first couple skills, that you talk to Lina the Healer by the rez shrine to the left from where you come out of Ascalon City. She will give you a quest to get a Resurrection Signet, make sure you complete it by partying with someone else for it. It's a must-have-on-skill-bar-at-all-times skill.

In Normal Mode enemies don't flee from AoE, and in HM Spiteful Spirit will rape them because they attack faster and will probably kill them before they run away, so it's still pretty effective.

Naw, not very many people in GW roleplay at all really. PvE is more of an actiony type game, it's really fun tho. Let me know once you get thru pre-searing (you'll know when you're through trust me!!) and I'll help you out at any time 8). Don't do the quest "The Path to Glory" until you are at least Level 8. It'll make things easy for you. (I'd help you in Pre, but I don't have any free slots at this time, need to buy more. ;-;)

http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Pre-Searing_checklist is helpful too. You can make sure you get all the skills and stuff you need with this. I highly recommend doing everything except the Charr Bags, they take forever to drop and are difficult to get.

Someone was selling charr bags for 450 gold heh.... Anyways, is it just me or are the drop rates for dye in pre-searing a lot higher than what they used to be? I've found 2 brown, 1 green and 1 silver dye so I have quite a lot of gold now (over 1k hahaha). I'll probably finish pre-searing tomorrow or something

It's only higher because dyes are now exempt from loot scaling, so they drop more often everywhere compared to how often they used to drop.

Sadly because there's more campaigns etc, there's less new people everywhere. But if I ever catch you on, and I'm not busy, I'll help you through stuff/chat. :) Once you hit the level 20 areas it really picks up, since there is more people around, tbh.

Well right now I only use curses, domination magic and soul reaping. I'm having trouble finding some necromancer wands though, and most players aren't selling any.

Last night I just realized that there's the new search window which is really awesome and useful to search for stuff. I joined a small guild and I'm hoping to find several players to play with often. I'll probably get Eye of the North and maybe Factions later hehehe.

Decided to take Mesmer as my second class. I like being able to mess with enemies and energy. So is there a GW guild or anything? I'd join it or any guild with GW dudes in it.

So, does anyone know if Nightfall works with an ISO or a no-dvd crack, I do have the original authentication key installed and everything? (i want to know before i commit BANDWIDTH to download anything)

You don't need the CD at all. It literally does nothing except preload some stuff. You can just load up Guild Wars and go to Nightfall areas anyways.

By GW, I mean Guild Wars.

I've played Guild Wars a long time ago (Prophecies) when it first came out (or was it beta?), but not too much. Now I'd like to get into it again.

But I'm so confused about the expansions/campaigns and what I need to buy/what I should buy.

When starting at level 1, do I have to start with prophecies or can I play whatever campaign I want? (Out of the three, prophecies, factions, and nightfall.) And should I buy all three campaigns?

Is the expansion necessary?

Thanks in advance.

There is a an official Guild Wars thread in the netplay forum, I'll try to find it but I can answer some of your questions.

When starting at level 1, you can start at any campaign you have activated on your GW account(have bought). If you have nothing else to spend the money on, or really like Guild Wars, go ahead and buy all three (although in my opinion, factions is pretty bad. Like, I really didn't enjoy assassin/ritualist or the story/areas much).

No the expansions are not necessary unless you want to, you know, play them.  They don't really add anything but story and classes (if you buy an expansion I think it comes with all the base classes like warrior, mesmer, ranger I think).

Edit: Here is the official GW thread http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=8286.0

Okay. Well I guess I'll start in one of the new campaigns because I haven't played them before. So you recommend Nightfall then?

I can just get nightfall and start with that right, without the original game?

(I played originally on my brother's account btw)

yeah you can buy any one and start playing. obviously nightfall and factions have a few added classes, and different areas/story, but they are basically separate games and you can buy any combination of them and play.

Get Nightfall, then Factions, then EotN.

You can play them in any order.

Connect them to your current account.

You don't need the disks in the games.

You can take your Prophecies character through the other games.

i've actually stopped playing it just recently except to just talk to people (i've pretty much done everything that i want to do before GW2). i might start playing next month when they revamp the titles, but I've mostly just been playing TF2 (and very soon L4D) lately. The only exception is now, because of the Costume Brawl which is the best thing they've ever made. i could prolly help you out when you hit level 20 tho.
