Title: Path of a t..true Guitar Hero
Post by: Kole on October 24, 2008, 01:20:51 am
I happened to come across this article on kotaku about a boy who was allowed to drop out of school to pursue a career as a professional Guitar Hero player...

here's part of the article, it's rather short:

"Blake convinced his folks (that is, "We couldn't take the complaining anymore," said his mom) to let him drop out last September. They hired in-home tutors to continue his education there, at least, but there's no doubt priority number one is Guitar Hero. There's a vaguely defined goal of Blake playing it professionally, either through Major League Gaming or by winning prizes in a national and international competitions. But so far he's only made about $1,000, most of that value realized in meals and other freebies won at local competitions. The other pro gamer the reporter contacted for this story said he's cashed in about $25,000 in his entire career."

(read the full article here (http://kotaku.com/5037975/parents-let-kid-drop-out-of-high-school-to-focus-on-guitar-hero))

Wha..t?  I can't believe any parent can tolerate something like this.  I can understand if this was to pursue an actual music career, but a video game career, let alone Guitar Hero?  The boy (Blake 16y.o) has made money out of this.  I can consider this whole shenanigans to be "OK", but allowing him to drop out of school just for this is somewhat crazy.  Think of all the stuff this kid is gonna miss in Highschool.

This is a perfect example of parent negligence, and they always blame video games... tsk tsk. :fogetshrug:

Thoughts?

If in the end he does not make millions I think he'll just give up and try something more usual like doing office stuff.

The parents "couldn't take the complaining anymore",  I don't think parents dicipline their children anymore, they actually gave in to this,  if it was something meaningful and beneficial then sure, go drop out.

I'd have broken his fisher-price guitar right in front of his face if I was his father, and take him to guitar center and buy him a stratocaster and say "here be a real guitar hero".  This kid will turn out to have a shitty life.

Resume:

Pro Guitar Hero Champion.

Education:
Elementary and Middle School.

bring on the job offers!

being 16 years old and making money playing video games is a dream come true.  I highly doubt "quitting" even will come through his mind, he will probably realize he made a mistake once he's 26 years old and still working at mcdonalds.  This is to say "IF" he fails.  He should save up his money at least so he can have a stable life in the future.

Not even child actors have good life after quitting showbusiness, they almost live lives of near-poverty.  I can't imagine how guitar hero kid blake will wind up in the future if he continues this through his 20's.

According to the article his parents are named Mike and Hunter Peebles.

So, using the internet, I found many Hunter and Mike Peebls living in Raleigh. So, I went through all the addresses and found out which ones had BOTH Hunter and Mike. I came up with three total. So, I'm guessing that they probably lived in three different houses. But the 10516 number in two houses is a really strange coincidence.

He has a facebook fans page with this gr8 message

Quote
I am still getting an education. I have a back up plan if this doesn't work out. I have been looking into taking classes on how to make my own video games.

I am not playing Guitar Hero for the money since there isn't much you can make from that. I am playing all kinds of games so I can play smarter in FPS games. It helps because you think more strategically and tactically the more you play. It also helps your aim in future games that are similar.

If you get good at some rhythm games you usually can pick up other rhythm type games and get good at them faster than most people. In fighting games you learn how to string moves together to combo the other player etc. The same goes with a lot of types of games.

If you care at all which I don't think most people would but I have written a response to people bashing in another forum which you can look at if you want. It is well written out other than I copied and pasted a paragraph so the same paragraph is in there twice.

Here is the link anyway, it is the last post on page 6:

He should just go hustle drunk college dudes for their money. I won $40 one night off of this drunk douche because I beat him at guitar hero.  The parents should be slapped. "Wah I couldn't take the complaining anymore so I let him ruin his life a little bit."

okay its cool (i guess) that he wants to make money from playing video games, who wouldnt right. However quitting, or not going to, or whatever the fuck he's doing, IGNORING it just for that is jsut fucking stupid.

There are extremely few professional gamers who perform at top level after they're about 25.  He's going to have to realize that he can't do this sort of thing forever.  You need to have something else that you can do, because once your career is finished it'll be just a cool footnote on your resume and nothing more than that (unless you move to Japan or South Korea, in which case you'll have an easier go at becoming a public figure).

This is just...I don't know. I really want to say something about how the parents suck for letting him do this, because seriously, you'd be better off (money-wise) becoming a session guitarist or something. Guitar Hero...? I can't think of a game I'd like to dedicate my life to *less*.

But if he really wants to do it, it's really nothing to do with me. He can fuck his life up (in my opinion) all he wants.

I'm serious if I was that fucker's dad I'd make him sign one of those civil independence forms or whatever they're called along with the form to let him drop out and then kick his stupid ass on the street.

I don't get how people (even a 16 yo) could be so disgustingly stupid.

This reminds me of a news report about gaming and they said how it was contributing to obesity when it was proven that gamers were in fact fitter more then on average then compaired to an average person, why it reminds me of that i don't know, just does. I'm friends with the best SSBM player in the UK and whilst he plays at tourneys he still goes to college and just started uni last September. What i mean is playing games tourney even professionally isn't a good enough reason to drop out of school, that is just bad parenting, but its more then likely going to be blamed on Video games.

as it always will be...  Companies do all they can already to make sure games dont fall into players who aren't supposed to play them (eg. ESRB).  In the end it will be up to the parents to control what the kids play.

Which is a massive problem, because parents seem to want to give their children the opportunities they never had as children (i.e. give in to their every desire). Maybe, there was a *reason* that you didn't get what you wanted as a child. Maybe, not giving in to your children teaches them that they don't always make the best decisions. It also teaches them how to handle disappointment. Lots of legislation's getting passed in Australia to put less responsibility on parents and more on society (i.e. sex education in schools, $4000 for having a baby, paid maternity leave). Parents need to take responsibility for their children. Because they're *your* goddamn kids.

QFT, but then again there's a line between giving your child opportunities and letting your child's immature inhibitions control them, then later on only to really set them up for failure in life.

What the fff

I dropped out with basically ZERO PLAN, and I think it's the worst decision I've ever made etc. but from now on I can always point to this story and say at least I'm not that shithead. I just...no words. Kids are growing up so fucking stupid.

edit: except it quotes his mom so oh shit don't tell me his mom's name is hunter that is usually a name reserved for little boys raised by rednecks and their entire wardrobe consists of dirty camo sweatshirt/sweatpants combos

I don't know why but I found this revelation deeply depressing.
