Title: Laser Printer
Post by: Statix on October 24, 2008, 04:45:31 am
Hey all. I have a few questions about laser printers as I would like to get one.

Can printers advertised as having "ethernet" connect directly to your router, and then be accessible from other computers on the network as a printer? I'd really like to skip the whole plug in to computer/share step as that relies a lot on the computer being on, not failing, etc.

Are color laser printers any good and worth getting? I print mostly text, and I only use color when I make random birthday cards or whatever. If I could get rid of my old inkjet color printer that'd be nice, but if laser color is no good I can keep it. If color ink is unreasonably priced I wouldn't bother either.

I know the ink lasts for a long time (1+ years, I hear) and that's why I'm planning on getting one. Are the cartridges generally replaceable, or should I look specifically for ones that are?

Lastly, any suggestions?

Thanks.

Network printers work fine connected to hubs or routers. Just about every printer you can find has some way to replace the ink. Some cost more than others however. If you print text a lot, get one that has black as it's own cartrige so you can replace it more often than one(s) with other colors.

you get toner for laser printers, not ink. printers are cheap enough that if you don't do much colour printing at all it might be best to save yourself some money, get a cheap black and white one and if you want color done grab a cheap inkjet, because i'm pretty sure a color laser printer is expensive enough to offset the other two

Yes, it's possible. Some routers, like apple's airport, can do network printing via USB.

It's alright, but the price difference between a good B&W one and a decent color one is just too large to be worth it.

yes it's really easy to replace toner
