I was wondering about this because it's exam time and I'm MEGA STRESSED (final exams then I graduate, someone ban me from the forums btw), and this girl I knew who was in the same boat said she'd been crying a lot and I found it fairly weird.
I've cried maybe once this year. I remember for a long time the last time I had cried was during a scene in Minority Report, and it was only notable because I realised it had been the last time I cried. I'm pretty sure I've never cried over a girl or anything too - I cried when Ash lost the pokemon league. Actually now that I'm writing this down it seems like I only cry when someone else is crying. Bit of a sheep really.

How often do you cry? If you feel like sharing, what sets you off? Am I missing out on something? I remember a cooking teacher in intermediate said if you never cry you get eye cancer, he said it as we were cutting onions, so now I purposefully waft onion fumes into my eyes when I'm cutting them.

Also this isn't one of my topics, I'm genuinely curious and I honestly cried when Ash lost at the pokemon league.

It's really not a good thing, though, crying actually helps a lot and even if you don't really feel like it, crying and shouting at the same time helps blow off steam quite a lot actually(not emo)!! Also, yes, I've never felt like crying for a long time, so I guess I'll vote for the five month option.

My eyes tear up, but there usually aren't even enough for them to fall out of my eyes (they just sort of sit there). Also it's more when I get mad at people than actually sad.

The last time I really cried was ummm about two years ago I think when me and my girlfriend of about a year broke up? Maybe a bit before that I forget.

Final exams though man. Do you think its because of the pressure of the exams or because of the pressure of after this we are gonna have to do life things!!!!!

There are certain compositions like Beethoven's Emperor concerto that when conducted by certain people evoke enough emotion to move me to tears. Also Howard Shore's music for Return of the King. Music is pretty much the only thing that stirs enough emotion in me to make me cry.

then during cancer it went up in frequency. where before the end of American Beauty just made me tear up a little, I had constant tears down my face during both the the bag scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDXjnW3nIWg) and of course the ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYrgHju3d-E). I don't think that needs explanation though; when you face death, everything gets a little...idk.

stress doesn't make me cry, but sometimes there's genuinely too much bad shit going on to make it without refueling at nature's gas station.

steel you should watch an episode of star trek deep space nine called "the visitor". i know how that sounds! but i think you would really like it judging by the post you made. everyone should watch that episode if you are remotely interested in doing so. that episode had me going over and over again. star trek! for pete's sake!!!

whenever i have troubles with women or whatever, i get a nice cry usually while listening to something sad or emotional (i like that scene in the US Office where michael is sad and is listening to that preview clip of a coldplay song or something... yeah i do that sometimes) and then i feel tons better.

crying is super healthy and if you can let go and not be like "damn man i am crying thats hella gay" *wipes tears, grunts* then it feels really good to have a cry sometimes.

and crying over general stress and stuff i don't understand AT ALL

Man. I thought I was the only one who has this. I actually don't really cry but I need to forcefully restrain myself from doing so.

Whatever it is, I basically cry at the same type of stuff that you mention. It's just the IDEA of it all. Even BAD TV SHOWS sometimes yield this reaction, maybe because of the idea that this sort of thing really does happen. The article you linked to the other day about the death penalty was the same.

I'd always cry when talking to someone about my depression and how it made me feel. beyond that I think I've only cried during movies when it's about family, family stuff really gets to me. I'm getting teary-eyed right now just thinking about it. I love my family!!

But yeah, don't often have those terribly depressing moments too often. Probably overdue for one, actually.

EDIT: Oh wait my cat died last year, I cried a bit a few times around that time.

This is how I usually react to really touching media. I have had to hold back tears because of art several times that I can remember. Most recently it was during the second movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G at the Minnesota orchestra - that is a really amazing piece of music.

Otherwise the last time I really cried was when I performed an extremely inappropriate sex act on an unsuspecting girl who was afraid to stop me. I felt like such a slime when she told me how uncomfortable I made her!

But I don't think I cry very often. Maybe about 10 times in my life? I am emotionally moved pretty easily but I can choke back tears like a big boy.

i haven't cried yet i'm just really stressed thanks to Poor Time Management mostly, but yeah everytime someone asks "hey what are you gonna do when you're finished" i clench my fists and scream FIGHT YOU, but it seriously does scare me because i've got nothing planned!

ahahaha i remember i cried at the end of koyanasqatsi because i thought the rocket was the challenger. it's kind of sad that i cry mostly to movies i guess but maybe my life just isn't worth crying about!

When Alex inquires about his snake in A Clockwork Orange. The first time I watched it the line MY SNAKE, WHERE'S MY SNAKE hit me hard man.

The ending of Mulholland Dr. and, upon further reflection, the whole fucking thing. This concept of unrequited love/borderline obsession gets to me I think? Also Diane's life fucking sucks, IT CAN BE ARGUED that she was sexually molested by her grandparents or parents which is part of what lead to this obsession with Camilla BLAH BLAH BLAH im probably shouldn't go into another essay on mulholland drive right now maybe later.

Basically all of The Elephant Man. I think there was a particular line that got to me but I can't remember it off the top of my head, I'll get back to you guys on that one.

Also that episode of Futurama where Fry tries to revive his dog. It didn't really almost make me cry but it did get to me in some way.

Like kids/women that get abused, the inequalities that exist in our world (especially the 3rd world). I don't really cry but I react in different ways. I'll probably just get angry or speak my mind if I have to. I hate it when defenseless people are picked on or ridiculed, that shit ain't cool.

I don't go out of my way to watch heart breaker movies but when I do I never cry. Perhaps if the event is likely to happen me or someone out there in the world then I could relate and I'll be like "Damn" or whatever. I had family members that died in the past and I've never cried.

To be honest, when I was in my teens I used to be quite sensitive and I always thought for the other person but now I only act that way if the other person deserves my kindness. Like, if a really nice person got hit by a car or hung themself (which I experienced) then I would feel really shitty and think about it a lot... It happen to me and I didn't cry man, just got a little teary.

I GUESS I'M BROKEN.

I didn't cry when I got heartbroken last year. Not even a tear

That's mostly because, as some people know over here, I can handle emotions very well and do not overrate stuff (which is why people might confuse it with me being a hard shell).

EDIT: i did have tears from heartfelt movies, but I'm discounting that because it is more of an association with the world of fiction, which is not reality.

The last time I cried was over a month ago, but before that it was twice a week sometimes and then dry spells (lol) that would last a month or two. Most of my crying was because I was a raging alcoholic and in a drunken 'stuporage' combined with the fact I haven't gotten over some things, like my best friend dying a year and a half ago, and the waves of all pervasive nihilism that wash over me once in awhile. I've stopped drinking completely though and am slowly becoming more stable.

The smallest things make me emotional. Like the movie Wall-E and that one Futurama episode with Fry's dog. Sometimes I cry and I can't even really think of a reason why I'm doing it.

EDIT: Oh lol, I just read the thread now (after replying) and I can't believe how many other people cried about that Futurama episode! My boyfriend laughed at me so hard when he saw I was crying (he also thought the episode was sad but not cry sad).

Also, Dogs are awesome. They are so sweet and loyal and they love you unconditionally no matter what you do to them. I think dogs are great, I'm not looking forward to the day when my Dozer dies. That's going to be a breakdown day for sure.

But other than this week I haven't cried in maybe two months (and that was under special circumstances). I tend not to cry for several months at a time. I do tear up from time to time when I see something really touching on television, or listen to very moving music (instrumentals usually), but tears rarely ever leave my eyes. I am, however, the type of girl that will cry tears of joy when really excited and happy. :P

like really, i don't even think i could if i tried. i have seen really sad shit and been moved and felt like maybe i kind of wanted to cry a little but couldn't. like there is a BLOCK that prevents if from happening; i thought everyone had one of these.

I wonder if I'll cry when my dog dies. I doubt it. It's annoying how people think crying is some sort of ranking system for how much you care about something. I love my puppy but she's old and we've had great times so I don't think it would be something to get too upset over. I'll just miss her, is all.

Especially the part about the homeless old man, when it all sinks in that he's going to die that day over and over again and he's been dieing every time before that moment in the movie just hit me so hard I was bawling. I took the movie very seriously, there were some funny bits but man does it make me shed tears.

But for some reason I only cry in specific emotional moments. Every other time i'd cry, for some reason, I subconsciously laugh instead and I have to hold it back but when I try to it looks like i'm smirking with a forced creepy/nervous laugh. I am trying to break this occurence, it's been ruining potentially good relationships since the day it started to happen.

anyway i wasn't aware not being able to get misty while watching the green mile was so profoundly handicapping. there is a difference between finding it very difficult to cry and being an emotional cripple; it's just one outlet for anxiety/emotions and i don't particularly think it's an enormous loss that i turn to other things for release instead.

I used to when I was alot younger but since I've gotten older I've gotten really detached and I don't think I can at all anymore. Like you know when something really terribly bad that happens and you see these little kids that run around and are totally oblivious to it? Thats me except I fully understand whats happened I'm just too detached to really react in a profound way other than "damn, thats unfortunate".

It's kind of troublesome. I don't wanna cry my eyes out at the first sad thought, I'd just like to feel a little more. I usually just take an objective standpoint on things since I honestly don't have any emotions to let out. It's especially bothersome because I'm a creative person and I like to write poems and music. However, without emotions it's a bit hard. I try to listen to music that gets me in a sad mood because I want to write a song about something that happened, but I'm just really withdrawn that it doesn't really work. I have a few guesses of how I got like this, but I don't really know. I'd like to snap out of it. I just don't know how.

Oh yeah that happens alot to me too. I hate it when we're watching a supposedly "moving" part of a movie or a book or something, and I yawn. Makes people look at me and be like all "Awww".

A fifth of my school is in band, and it has an amazing spirit, and thinking back on the last four years, marching band games were a place I could just unleash in. And after every game, win or lose, we go up to the school's ampitheater and all 280 of us play while the student section has a mosh pit. On the last game though, all the seniors get to mosh to and it was just a great way to end. Like half the seniors were crying after it.

Other than that, I haven't really cried at all in the past three or fours years. There might have been one or two instances, but really, I cannot remember them.

What makes me angry? When people mess with/hurt my friends, which has been happening a lot recently. So lately I've been emotionally torn up as far as anger goes. I'm the overprotective type. Especially around this one girl who I deem as my best friend. I truely feel that my duty in life is to protect her no matter what: she is older than me, but acts quite a bit younger, and is a bit clingy, and needs my protection from certain things.

But yes, I only ever cry if I'm severely angry.

I don't have the capability to cry when someone else loses someone... does this make me cold/distant, I don't know. I am an empathic person but I don't give way to emotions in most circumstances. I think it's because I'm a bit of a control freak and crying is losing control.

When my dog passed away in '06 a single tear rolled down my cheek, but as I watched my father drive off into the night after the divorce between my parents was finalized early this year, I couldn't help it. Only other time I could remember was when I felt extremely guilty for making my mother's life a living hell after a fierce argument.

And then there are other times when you -want- to cry, because if you don't you feel as if you truly don't give a damn. Like when my grandfather on my mother's side passed away in the summer of '05, I saw him in the worst of his health, on his deathbed, and even to today I have yet to cry for him... I still carry the burden of this truth.

Most recently, I felt depressed about my old friend passing due to her being sick(lupis). The last time I saw her I was working at walmart. She had just had a baby, too.

I feel a bit down for some time and then something releases it. I'm also one of those people who cry when others do, even if there's no other reason at all.

Crying is great, I always feel better afterwards. I often surprise myself when I burst to tears, "Where did this come from?", and it makes me realize and think through the things behind it. Fuck this culture for making crying shameful, especially for men. I'm confident psychiatric clinics wouldn't be so ridiculously crowded here if people wouldn't be afraid to cry, alone or in public.

My girlfriend is like the polar opposite. When she gets stressed out she just kind of clams up, and she'll probably cry about it randomly 2 days to a week later.

Together we're like a complete emotionally dysfunctional machine!!!!

edit: oh yeah i cried yesterday when i saw that episode of family guy where brian dates that really old woman but she dies and they use virtual reality to live their entire life in a few minutes. but i am on an incredibly bad sleep schedule and was very tired by then

In fact he almost die today and I didn't know till like 10 o'clock today.

Edit:Also are grandma lives with us too but she is not on her death bed or anything. My Grandpa has heart problems and to top it off they found a clot a week ago also they found cancer too and he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's for about 5 years or so.

My grandma died a few months ago, so I sympathize with you.

I pray its not something I have to worry about any time soon, my dad is only in his 40's so hopefully we have a lot of years left together.

I'm not trying to be manly either, in fact I think it may be unhealthy. I just lost a very close uncle of mine, who was basically my second dad and was one fucking hell of a guy, and simply couldn't cry over it. I just think of him a lot.

I will always think of him but I mentally prepared myself a long time ago for any type of death. When he passes I will miss him but I will not be sad.

Hrmmm... been a while since I sincerely cried. I remember I was reading some article a while ago about some girl who was terminally ill and wanted to watch "UP." She was too sick to move much so as part of a "Wish" thing (IIRC) a special version was adapted to DVD so she could watch it at home. Not long after finally seeing the movie (it was like a day or something) she passed away. I'm not sure what it was, the way the mother interpreted her passing after watching the movie, the fact that the girl had to be told a "play by play" of the movie because her condition caused her too much pain to keep her eyes open much... whatever it was, I felt my face get hot and tears just started streaming down. It wasn't even like, I was trying or wanting to cry or anything... it just happened and I couldn't make it stop.

god...me too. i think that show made me cry a lot. but more recently the last time i cried was when this girl i am in love with back home to france and when obama won (from joy).
