Title: Halloween Gamin'!
Post by: Keith Stones on October 25, 2008, 08:31:39 pm
I'm looking for some really scary videogame experiences. I know about the obvious Silent Hill series (that radio...[shivers]), and that I might need therapy if I play through those. Is there anything else like that, though? Something that after I play it, I won't sleep for a week? Also, we can talk about scary games in general here.

A game that was actually surprisingly scary for me was Doom 3. I know it's pretty much all cheap-scare, haunted house stuff, but the periods in between fights with the demons actually carried this apprehension that I liked. And then of course after the buildup, and I'd jump. Good times.

F.E.A.R : I remember recommending it to a mate because my PC was to shitty.... OH the long nights, I didn't even touch the game I enjoyed seeing him getting scared the fuck out of him... its much scarier watching someone play it since your not in direct control.

also.. oblivion and morrowind pretty much scare the crap out of me at moments, mostly because its not a horror game but crawling through tombs or secret passages cant go without a good scare.

If you're looking for a real good fright, try Dead Space for the 360.

Yeah this games made me jump quite a few times!

It's one of my favorite 360 games now. It's quite top-notch.

I've been playing some Castlevania, mostly Rondo of Blood. Not scary in the least, but it does have the gothic Halloween atmos going for it.

i always recommend call of cthulhu dark corners of the earth in these topics because it really is the only game that has frightened me.

system shock 2 is creepy with disturbing audio clips.

realms of the haunting isn't OMG SCAREY but it is kind of disturbing and really atmospheric for a 1996 first person adventure/shooter.

The first Condemned is pretty scary and freaky.  The second one is a little more actiony/story-oriented rather than scares/second and suspense.

Once I start working I think I might pick up Dead Space. I'd play Call of Cthulhu: DCotE if it weren't so fresh in my mind (I beat it a couple months ago, so it'll have to wait awhile).

Are the Fatal Frame games or Siren any good? Or are they just weird-ass Japanese horror like the Grudge?

"We Don't Go to Ravenholm"

OK, HL2 is mostly cool action stuff, but the Ravenholm chapter had me going "oh shit oh shit" a lot. Especially when I heard poison headcrabs or fast zombies.

Edit: haha I'm dumb though - who hasn't played Half-Life 2 by now?

I second Condemned. There where parts of that game that were truely frightening.

I looked through this list (http://www.giantbomb.com/games/?page=1&sort=release_date&filter_value=1&filter_type=theme) to see if i saw anything I recognized as good or scary. (its all the games with a filter for Horror) and just listed the non obvious or unmentioned in this topic so far.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R has some scary moments.
Bioshock, while not necessarily scary WAS pretty creepy on occasion.
I vaguely remember parts of Far Cry: Instincts that were somewhat scary.
Dino Crysis 1 and 2.
I hear that Fatal Frame is really scary.
The Quake series has some scares in it.
Parasite Eve 1 and 2 are apparently scary (but I never played them, but I've seen a bit of it to think it MIGHT be what your looking for)
Never played it but I imagine Dark Sector is scary to a degree.

Try some of the Fatal Frame games. I know that there are some on the Playstation 2, not sure about other systems.

Siren: blood curse is pretty fun, but only scary in some places. I haven't played the other ones.

yeah i forgot about that game! it was awesome.

so yeah:

Call of Cthulhu
Condemned
Dead Space

you should try those three. CoC and Dead Space have the no HUD going on for them, so it's even more immersion.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I wish I could get Silent Hill 2 in time so I could play it on Halloween (nothing else to do that night).

Damn that game is scary. I never finished it.

The Ravenholm Chapter is immensely scary. It's made me jump so many times (I only just started playing Half Life 2, for the first time ever) it was intense. The only other game to make me jump was STALKER whenever you encounter those invisible dudes.

Oh yeah, play STALKER. Good game, good jumps at points.

Yeah I only began it a few months ago. The game rules but god damn that chapter is nuts. I liked it, even if I was desperate for health/ammo almost all the time. Getting out was a relief.

Siren is awesome, really. It's creepy and the way they did with the non-linear story telling is very clever.  The only thing that's bad about the game in the first  one  are map system and mission system. But these are fixed in Siren 2.  The game is pretty unforgiving as well when it comes to killing off the characters. (One of the mission is to commit suicide in order to let the other character survive....omg.)

I'd also recommend Haunting Ground aka Demento , since it's one of my favourite horror games and because I'm a sucker for clock tower series XD

I also second Rule Of Rose, if you can stand the poor battle system, the game reward you with one of the most interesting psychological horror story I've ever seen.

If you still own PS1 (or you can find ISO file) , the game Hell Night ( aka Dark Messiah for the japanese version) is REALLY scary. I still haven't beaten the game yet, though I'm on the last chapter now. The game is in first person point of view and you cannot do anything but run away and hide from the monsters. Once you can find  a partner, you can use their ability to fight back or make you survive easier. The game feature multi endings since it depends on who's your partner ( you can only choose 1 from 5 - 6, I don't remember).

And if you own NDS, then I guess Twilight Syndrome ~ The Forbidden Urban Legend~ is pretty scary too. Though the game is in Japanese only :(

Also another game you should get if you have a DS is Dementium: The Ward. Great game, the dynamic lighting and the ambience make it really quite good.

@Dr. Ears
Oh yeah forgot about Dementium. The save system sucks though, but the atmosphere is quite creepy :)

@Murex Bandaris
Do you want indie horror games as well? Or do anybody know any indie horror games?

The only good indie horror games I've played were the Chzo Mythos (5 Days series) and Lost in the Nightmare, both made with AGS.

Yeah, 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, etc. are really good.

The third one, Trilby's Notes was meh because it was a text adventure built in, and it got really annoying at guessing what words to use.

Sadly, I haven't been able to play the fourth/last one. I have both a Mac and a PC, but the PC has Vista which won't run it :(

when i was a kid, my friend and i would play daggerfall for like 10 minute increments. we'd run around town, buy clothes or armor or whatever, and then go to a dungeon. we'd always hear skeletons screaming and it scared the fuck out of us so we'd run out of the room and wait maybe 5 minutes to come back. then we'd play for 10 more minutes until something else scared us. i played it again pretty recently and it's still really scary!

Vampire Bloodlines is one I don't think has been mentioned here. I found that to be quite scary at moments. Of course other moments were not as scary but it had a great horror atmosphere at the very least.

Gotta agree with Ravenholm, though I've played through it so many times at this point the effect is all but lost.

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows, more specifically level 9, Robbing the Cradle. The simple atmosphere of that place made me paranoid all the way through it. Though it might just be because I usually avoid the whole horror thing.

I hear the Clock Tower series can be pretty scary, dunno much about it though.

Lost in the nightmare looks really interesting but all the link I found are dead :( Anybody still has it?

EDIT: Never mind. Found it. In case anyone wanna try it  , here's the link

http://www.reloaded.org/download/Lost-In-Nightmare/116/

As for clock tower, only the first two games and Demento/Haunting Ground ones are good.  If you like tense situation where there isn't a rocket launcher but run and hide just like those b horror movies, then go for it :)  (I'm a sucker for those b slasher movies so the game mechanic works for me.)  Don't play Clock Tower 3. It sucks, stupid and not even scary :(  Ok some parts are scary but after the first half of the game it's nothing but ridiculous :(

Holy shit I remember this!  That shit scared me when I was little but I'm sure if I played it now it would just be stupid.  Or maybe it is scary I don't know??

Also Warlock for the Genesis creeped me out when I was younger, that shit was so cool.

You know I still find Doom 2 (Doom 1 to a lesser extent I guess) to be unnerving. Mainly Final Doom actually. TNT and Plutonia have some creepy levels. there's this one TNT one where you descend into the catacombs of this castle and it's really surreal and eerie at the same time. The gameplay is obviously basic (it's a grand daddy of the FPS genre after all) but Doom still features some of the most surreal levels and enemy designs of any FPS!

The great sound design and lighting effects help too.

This could just be me and my wasted youth of playing co-op Doom 2 in a dark basement. Doom 3 never captured the feeling for me. Yeah, it featured MORE MODERN graphics technology blah blah but the environments and monster designs were so bland and it lacked any style or flair.

Nah, if you play it now it's just funny.  I can see how that would scare the shit out of a kid though, but I can't say that it's STUPID playing it now.  It's just really funny and fun.  You've got to be playing with other people who are willing to talk to the TV though, or else it would suck ass.

edit: although if you do have the lights down and volume up like it tells you to, the first time or two the gatekeeper yells "STOP!!!" kind of startle you.  It doesn't SCARE you, it just makes you jump from loud sudden noises.

By the way, while I DID mention the Fatal Frame games; I just think they are creepy they didn't actually SCARE me. One time I remember actually JUMPING was where the zombie dog jumped through the window in Resident Evil. Also, LOZ: The Ocarina of Time wasn't by no means a scary game, but the shadow hands in the Forest and Shadow Temples scared me when they try to grab you.

why not play atmosfear

that shit is terrible

dunno about nightmare

don't know if you knew this or if you were just comparing them in general but atmosfear is what nightmare became (so it wouldn't be confused with knightmare because they were both BIG THINGS IN AUSTRALIA at the time)

the first atmosfear DVD game, from what i have seen, is the absolute biggest pile of shit ever...i mean, you can watch clips of nightmare and probably see why it would be fun/funny to play, but you watch clips of atmosfear and it's just boring ass shit

khufu looked good but you can't find it anywhere so fuck see if i ever get to play it

i especially can't wait to play the third nightmare (the witch) because halfway through the tape, her accent and voice get so ridiculous that she's hardly forming words anymore, and it just sounds amazing
