Title: Dead Set
Post by: local_dunce on October 29, 2008, 10:29:43 am
Hey, Has anyone been watching this little TV mini-series. It takes the NOVEL IDEA of the big brother house and decides to base a zombie apocalypse around it. Featuring cameos from Davina and all the previous Big Brother Housemates. I thought it might be great to see all these people torn to shreds with budget special effects but it actually turned out to be a little distressing. I think I read somewhere the guy who writes it is also the co-creator and writer for the guardian newspaper.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BhGLM49k8ck

I'm not really sure what I think of it at the moment which is probably bad after 2 episodes. I mean it is so gimmicky the way it handles everything so far but I am a real sucker for ZOMBIE OUTBREAK films and survival horror shit. If any of you guys have been following it what are your opinions?

I love zombies but I despise Big Brother and all the Big Brother type personalities it comes with like the plague.. Is this show worth watching for the zombies alone or is it just made up with crappy british acting and lame british humor?

No, they hired American actors and writers so that people watching on the other side of the pond don't feel all bummed out at the first use of intelligence.

Ok I am being sarcastic.

Yeah this was reallly fun.

Good honest trash, which we don't see enough of. I like how rather than making up a reality show they just went for it and threw big brother into the mix.

It's a bizarre idea, but a great laugh. Yet to watch the second episode though, and i'm struggling to see how it can keep momentum with stuff other than 'shit, more zombs!'.

Also, Massy, stop being thick as fuck.

Yeah, the only hour-long one is the first one, I think.
I';ve only caught episode 2, but that was very friggin' awesome, I need to continue to watch the rest of it.

You're arguing in a thread which is about a show that isn't even aired in your country and the only reason you posted here was to flamebait the english people who are OBVIOUSLY going to post here.

I need not say more. Chesh has hit the nail/idiot on the head.

I'm so with you on this, and I AM British.
This is the main reason why I hardly ever watch British TV shows.
Although I don't really watch American ones either... OH WELL.

And esp, if you're refering to the board game 'Zombies!!!' then I'll give you a banana sticker, as it does win in every aspect.

Errrm, by my country you mean Britain?

Just cause im british doesnt mean I have to like all british shows/movies/acting... was just simply asking in my first post whether this was a budget show, you know the type filled with ugly special effects ect...

I dont dislike all British shows, love the classics like Only Fools and Horses, The Office ect....

It was too long for a movie and too short for a TV series. They should have either shortened it to a movie or made each episode an hour long. Interesting satire on big brother and it's audience however. TV IS TURNING EVERYONE INTO ZOMBIES.

hrmph... i *detest* when people overanalyze these types of things.  ever heard of just enjoying something, without trying to find it's "meaning"?

Big Brother is godly. I love that show with a passion, but this is based on the UK version, isn't it? Might give it a watch. :)

I'm completely with you, but there are far more cheap and low-quality British TV shows compared to American ones.
Whether you like them or not, Heroes, Lost, Alias etc etc Are far greater than any British show in terms of quality of acting and budget.
Dead Set seems to be far better than most British shows though and I enjoyed it...

Also, didn't the last episode just air? I missed but I'll watch it soon...

You're joking, right? Heroes and Lost are the most overhyped pieces of shit I've ever had to sit through. The amount by which they are overhyped eclipses how overhyped Halo 3 was, and that's saying something. God damn, I hate those shows; the acting is wooden as hell, the writing relies on drawing the shittiest storylines out for hours (storylines in which nothing actually seems to happen) and the characters are more two-dimensional than Ryu in Breath of Fire I. Especially in Lost, I don't understand how people can even like that show. I understand how people can like Heroes, but the appeal of Lost simply escapes me. It's a show were nothing happens for a whole freakin' hour!

As for budgets, the budget of a show doesn't matter in the slightest. Being able to pay the actors millions per show (i.e Friends) or having massive SFX budgets doesn't make a show more enjoyable. Sure, American television companies can generally put out better funding because they're larger and more commercial than British television companies, but large budgets don't mean good shows. For instance, Dr. Who is 10x anything American television has ever produced and that had a showstring budget (I'm talking about the original series here).

Besides, you shouldn't be judging a television show on nationality and budget anyway. Watch a show before you judge it, period.

The original series of Dr.Who was the worst peice of dog **** I had ever seen... the new series is just as bad! A large budget can make a huge difference e.g. watch an episode of stargate from season 1 and then watch an episode from season 9-10, massive difference in the way it looks.

That's within the same show, though. Increasing the budget of a good show is obviously going to make it seem more impressive, but the show has to be solid enough beforehand for the budget to matter. Giving a bad show a huge budget is akin to shining a piece of shit - it's not going to make the show look more impressive. Hence, the budget is unimportant relative to the show's concept.

I just marathonned the whole series. I thought it was pretty good. I really like Charlie Brooker, the main writer, anyway... particularly the first episode is recognisable as his work, knowing his views on the media and that. But yeah, Big Brother contestants and media types vs. zombies = win. I liked it.

There were lots of subtle jokes and digs, but I guess they had to avoid the properly outrageous comedic angle to avoid comparisons with Shaun of the Dead. Speaking of which... Simon Pegg and Charlie Brooker have been having it out through the Guardian about proper zombie classifications. Worth a look.
