From imdb:
Slumdog Millionaire is the story of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Freida Pinto), the girl he loved and lost.
Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out.

From Ebert Review:
"Slumdog Millionaire" hits the ground and never stops running. After its first press screening early Saturday morning, it became a leading contender for the all-important Audience Award, which is the closest thing the Toronto Film Festival has to a top prize. And an Oscar best picture nomination is a definite possibility...
...All of this is told in vivid flashbacks during his appearance as a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Yes. Introduced as a slumdog from the bottom of society, he has the correct answers to question after question (the flashbacks show why), and becomes a national hero as the suspense builds. Transfer the premise to a more conventional location, and this story might seem much more conventional. It's the portrait of India that transforms it."
This movie is directed by Danny Boyle, one of the most versatile directors right now, in my opinion. Movies he's directed include the sci-fi thriller Sunshine, the horror-thriller 28 Days Later, the saccharine childish Millions and my personal favourite by him, Trainspotting. So I'm really looking forward to see this. His movies have this incredible vibrant visual flair that resonate the tone of his movies, and he always makes top-quality movies. I hope he doesn't sell out soon.
The movie's already racking up awards like crazy and is considered a strong contender for Best Picture Oscar come February next year.
Also, w00t, movie with Indian cast that isn't Bollywood shit.

Can't wait I just can't wait.
-
This movie is gonna fuckin rule
-
I didn't know "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" was still relevant in some part of the world.
Is that your FINAL ANSWER!? HAHAHAHAHA
Can I use a LIFE LINE?! HAHAHAHAHAHA
-
the flashback to how he learned the answers sounds like it could be as bad as a dramatic family guy cutaway. i don't like that idea but apart from that the "how can a little bozo from the streets have a brain...*shows em*THIS IS HOW!!!!!" is an idea for a movie i like i just don't see why they are using a gameshow to frame it.
-
I need to see this and Trainspotting too

Some of us don't like asian shit psyburn. I don't like chinese food because it's asian. I don't like asian films because they're asian. The only asian thing I like for being asian is a midrange thaiwanese hooker
I bet you're going to flip this round and say it's racist....

The director is Danny Boyle. It's produced by Christian Colson, Ibana Mackinnon, Tabrez Noorani, Paul Ritchie, Tessa Ross, and Paul Smith. The cinematography is done by Anthony Dod Mantle. It is written by Simon Beaufoy. The movie is not Asian it is officially listed as UK and US.
Also that was a racist comment.

Actually I thought this was a joke post at first based on the first image but I guess not.
Also this movie sounds pretty bad for the exact reason that jamicus mentioned. MAYBE I'M WRONG but it sounds like a really gimmicky and ridiculous way of explaining why this dude can answer every single question. Every question relates to a past experience this guy has had? Bullshit. This sounds dumb.
edit: just watched the trailer and it only looked worse EVERY ANSWER... BRINGS HIM TO HIS ONE TRUE LOVE or whatever the fuck. Sounds like another fake romance movie so I don't give a shit.
-
this sounds like that el konigsburg book about quiz bowl
-
if this had nothing to do with love and romance i'd like it more. as it is, this is august rush with gameshow and girlfriend instead of music and mommy.
-
hahahah yeah. this does look kind of gay guys. plus it's.............. asian....... I agree with Mark.
-
I agree with steel.
-
Wait... This sounds awful.
-
This looks like it could be really great or really awful, but with Danny Boyle at the helm I have faith.
-
Yeah, it does look August Rush-y and the whole concept is skeptical but I don't think I've ever had a Danny Boyle movie miss for me and I think he would be able to pull it off. Buzz is loud for it and it's sparking up like every film festival it's screened in, which has me even more interested, despite the concept seeming dodgy. But the trailer is apparently kind of misleading since I read it is supposed to be a comedy-drama.
But yeah, it has Danny Boyle at the helm and Simon Beaufoy writing the screenplay (he wrote The Full Monty, a very funny Brit movie) so I'm def. hooked.

IM GONNA WAIT FOR REVIEWS: Boyle does decent work at worst (unless he also did 28 Weeks Later which is supposed to be awful) but this does seem like a dumb concept.
-
Well reviews have started pouring in:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/slumdog_millionaire/
And 90% out of 80 reviews sounds pretty good to me. Of course, reviews don't make a movie either!

who said it was awful? it was v disappointing because i liked 28 days later a lot and it was not anything like that. like, it was not even remotely similar, stylistically, and it was a lot more traditional and not nearly as good. but!!! it wasnt awful and even as it was i thought it was still much better than most of the awful horror movies you see today (as in, it was mostly just WATCHABLE//okay i guess???)
-

uhm this is a bad thing?
-
august rush was really bad except for that little girl so yeah.
-
anthony lane probably gave this a fair review. like he didnt say ITS GARBAGE but he did say its formulaic as fuckkkk.
-
dude this movie looks gay as hell
-
I was really disappointed discovering Dev Patel was in this movie. I mean, a film about WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE is one thing to try and understand (Monopoly film), but for some film set in Mumbai, and then discovering it stars the guy who plays an idiot in some British TV show called Skins, aaa. It just sort of makes me lose all interest.
And they're talking about an Oscar nod, that'd just be bizarre.
-
You guys just don't like Indian people!
-
If any Boyle movie gets awards, it should have been Sunshine.
-

sarcasm mmmmmmaaannnn :fogetshrug:

at first glance i thought this too, but i just saw it and seriously that shit isn't forced on your
the trailers don't do this movie justice it's actually pretty decent and up on the zoo if anybody wants that shit
-
this movie has some terribly dumb PRO AMERICA scene that made the already shitty and predictable plot even worse. india is not like this, thanks for being a third rate satyajit rai with a gimmick danny boyle.

I felt differently. What I got from that scene was that Americans are really dumb; like how people now don't hit their kids if they do anything bad or nothing.
Saw this in the theater loved it..................................
-
thanks for the blatant COKE and CONVERSE product placement but other than that this movie was pretty awesome, SORRY DONT LIVE IN INDIA, CAN'T CRITIQUE ACCURACY

i haven't read most of the posts but yeah this is the exact idea came to my mind when i read the summary.
like deus ex machina every two minutes...

oh come on dude a guy kicked him in the face and blacked his eye somehow I don't think the Americans giving him 100 bucks came off as the "dumb" ones in that.
-
Dont like America?
Feel free to leave. Thanks.
