Title: Gears of War 2
Post by: bick on November 05, 2008, 04:51:00 am
Gears of War 2 is coming out this Friday, and I for one am very excited. I looked through the forum to see if anyone has made a topic, and didn't see one.

Changes to Single/Multiplayer
For Single-Player, the scope of the game has been raised. Instead of small skirmishes the player becomes apart of something bigger. For instance, Brumaks, a creature seen only briefly in the PC version of Gears of War 1, will make multiple appearances in the game. Also, the producers of GoW2 have given the
Locust more of a background to their motives in the war on humanity. As far as gameplay goes, the overall difficulty of casual mode has been reduced, and your team mates will actually advance through the battlefield without you instead of shooting from behind bunkers fifty feet away from the action.

For multiplayer, four new game modes have been added. For starters, there's Guardian mode, which is a remake of Assassination mode in the previous GoW. In Guardian, players can still fight after their leader has died, but they lose the ability to respawn for the remainder of the round. Another game mode, Submission, is similar to Capture the Flag, only instead of a flag players drag a corpse back and forth. The third new mode is called Wingman, splits the 10 players into five teams of two for more frantic gameplay. The final new game mode, called Horde, pits five players against fifty waves of Locust. For the first ten waves, player's fight an increasing number of enemies until level 11, where the enemy cycle repeats itself, only the locust will be harder to kill.

In addition to the new game modes, GoW2 will feature 5v5 matches instead of 4v4, players can now move their camera where ever when dead instead of the old static camera, and GoW2 is adopting a halo-esque matchmaking system.

New/Altered Weapons
Quote from: Gearsapedia
Scorcher Flamethrower -- This sucker will appear only once on a multiplayer map. It benefits from a longer range if you can hit the active reload perfectly and will glow red when it's ready to bring death to the masses.

Gorgon Burst Pistol -- Faster rate of fire than other pistols and shoots in short bursts.

Poison Grenade -- Spews a nasty purple haze that brings down everyone in its path.

Shield -- This sucker can be chucked into the ground beneath you and used as stationary cover. Of course, you can also carry it around and use it in conjunction with a pistol.

Mulcher(Chaingun) -- Shown in the Gears Of War 2 gameplay video at E3 2008, This version is portable, and so far holds 500 rounds. It also will overheat if used too long

Mortar Cannon -- Shown in an E3 interview with Cliff about Horde Mode, it's basically the same type of mortar cannons that they use today except you can blindfire it from your waist, aim and shoot it, or plant it on the ground and aim and shoot it across the level.

Lancer Assault Rifle -- You've heard this before, this armament from the original now has a tie-breaker for chainsaw kills. Mashing the B-button as fast as you can could lead to three outcomes. First, you win and slice through your opponent. Second, you lose and meet the same fate. Or third, there's an improbable tie and you both step back to go at it again (or whip out a shotgun and own their face). And no, you're not invulnerable for any part of the animation, also screenshots reveal the Lancer has a longer barrel, possibly hinting the fact the Lancer might be more accurate at longer ranges. Note: Chainsaw Duels in Gears of War 2

Hammerburst Assault Rifle -- This Locust rifle from the first Gears is back and can now fire with higher accuracy at longer ranges and does more damage. Players can also fire with a fan method (holding and releasing the right trigger) that will allow for a quicker rate of fire at the expense of accuracy.

Boltok Pistol -- This sucker is back from Gears 1 and now has a quicker rate of fire after an active reload.

Smoke Grenade -- These are now home to a concussion blast that will knock a shield out of someone's hand while disabling their sight and overall equilibrium. Any of the grenade types in the game can also be stuck on walls and will act as proximity mines.

Super Weapons -- The Hammer of Dawn is back of course, but there will also be other super weapons joining the roster such as the Mortar Cannon.

Of all the new gameplay changes, the addition of Stopping Power is the biggest. In GoW2, hitting a player repeatedly with any sort of long-range weapon will cause the player to get knocked back. This means no more rushing players with a shotgun D:

Reception
Overall, GoW2 has gotten an amazing Reception. With Gamerankings (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/938611.asp) showing an average score of 95%, it's clear that GoW2 is quickly becoming a must-have game for shooter fans.

Release Dates
Xbox 360 - November 7th, 2008 (everywhere)
PC - ??

So, is anyone else excited for GoW2? I'm looking to get a group together to beat Horde mode when the game comes out, so if you're interested post here/send me a pm

Whoops, that is true. They appeared in a trailer for the xbox version, but the player never got to fight/see them (to my knowledge).

I live in New Zealand, were like 18 hours ahead from America, etc. Were ahead of everyone basically with time zones, Australia is 4 hours behind us, I would state more but I can't be bothered. Check the reviews for it, GT has their video review up.

From what I've gather Gears of War 2 isn't all that different. So, chances are if you don't like the first Gears the second won't appeal to you. Also, I'm so jealous Tau D:

the charms of the GoW campaign was the feeling of being alone and destroyed beauty.

The main drive was not 'you vs locust' it was 'humans vs locust' and your squad was not the centrepoint of the war ( well not entirely ).
So I don't like the idea of being part 'of something bigger' which basically comes down to "you and the BFG9000 vs everyone!" which will be too epic.. I like the brutal run-ins with partolling enemies more.

Also I'm an PC user and I loved singleplayer and only the singleplayer.... online play was just retarded metagame... but yeah im looking forward to it... .. .. . . any news on the PC release?

Cliffy B has been moaning about how the PC markets suck blah blah blah and how Gears 2 is only coming to 360 and even said it was exclusive to it... I'd give it a year, tops!

well i meant something along these lines

i liked gears to an extent but it's not to be worshipped like so many do to it. gears 2 won't change much but everyone's gonna praise it for its advancements...when it boils down to a lot of the same gameplay i bet!

I'm so uninterested in this. GoW had virtually no story - it literally just had a setting and no plot - and all the trailers for this shit makes it seem like they're going to try to make you care about these horribly uninteresting characters. Genetic supersoldier?? Grizzled?? has a... has a grudge against the man?? wow...and the locust are led  by a queen who is fighting against environmental destruction?

also the updated engine looks like shit, and i mean that literally. they should fire their artists because COVERED IN DIARRHEA is not a good look for a game.

This game is fucken awesome, better then the first I can tell you that. Graphics are the best Ive seen on a console thus far. Gameplay has bee fine tuned and the whole grabbing someone when their limping is probably one of the funniest and helpful things they added. The campaign truly is more bad ass and better as Cliffy B said it would be. The destructible environment doesn't really add much to the gameplay itself but is still a nice addition for the atmosphere of the game.

The campaign is pretty crazy and the bot AI is very well done. The new modes like Guardian and Wingman and great additions as well. I haven't tried Horde out yet but I will. I still haven't finished the game yet but I will by tomorrow most likely. I think it's about 10-12 hours long for the campaign.

Playing it now, it's absolutely perfect. Bigger skirmishes, more epic settings, more epic REASON to fight, better graphics, animations, music, scope, everything's awesome. I'm on Act 2 out of 5, I'm guessing the game's a decent bit longer than the first as well. I'm guessing 12 to 18 hours?

GT review said it's solid 8 hours. I saw this game at shop yesterday but decided not to buy it because I still haven't played the first one (and I own it), so don't know if I like it at all. Looks good though.

Oh yeah the being able to move while down is a great addition, problem is when you play online some people just ignore you and continue killing shit. I always try to revive people when they need it unless I'm about to get hit by a shotgun or something cause yeah it wouldn't matter anyway haha.

Horde has got to be one of the funnest online modes, Submission is my fave right now(You have a civilian you shoot til he goes down then you grab him and use him as a shield while the other team tries to kill you an take him back to the halo point of where you take him to win the match), also I finished the game today, great ending and obviously left enough for the last game in the series.

I haven't even played the first one, bar for five minutes at a convention when it came out a few years ago. The game sort of appeals to me, but I have far too much else to get through at the moment to really be worried about this.

Edit: Jesus, this was a pretty useless post.

meh I played GOW 1 when it came to the pc and though it was somewhat pretty with average if not repetitive game play.  Then I saw the all the trailers and junk for the second and only had one question: you sure that isn't the first one?  Really graphically its a duplicate and gameplay wise I see little to no major changes/additions.  As far as horde goes didn't Epic release a certain game called UT2k4 that had this type of co-op endless enemy waves gameplay already?

The good thing I can say for it is at least it had some solid programing going into it as there were none of the random crashing/bugs that pops up in almost all new releases over the past 3 years...

lol well I did also install it on my older pc with a 2.2ghz pentium 4 and a 6800gt card and even on the lowest settings it failed to deliver co-op play at all :P  But my main rig played it on full without any problems which surprised me for a port.

Overall it's a better game than the first one on pretty much all aspects but the ending was just... terrible and abrupt and while not on the same shitty level as Halo 2, it's pretty close.

Oh well, still an awesome game (with a bunch of bugs)...

I've noticed a trend of developers getting things right for a while, then they suddenly start not getting it midway or near the end of developing a game. I wonder what goes through their heads during step 2 before step 3 sometimes.

Gears of War frustrated the fuck out of me. I liked it but there were so many gay bits. I hated the Kryll, I hated the Junker, I hated the mine carts, I hated Lambent Wretches.

How does Gears 2 rank on the FRUSTRATION LEVEL? Because there was a fuckload too much DIE AND RETRY in Gears 1. I don't like that sort of gameplay. Repeating the same five or ten minutes of gameplay, ad nauseum, until you finally don't fuck up whatsoever turns me off real damn quick. It's how games USED to be I guess, but it's not how I like them now. Plus I am not good at vidgame.

Yeah, I'm playing through GoW 1 right now, and I'm stuck at refilling the Junker.  The first wave (just drones or whatever) goes down fine, but when they bring in the Boomer, it finds me next to instantly, and I die.

The one time, I managed to kill the Boomer, I was killed by the Kryll RIGHT UNDER A LIGHTPOST!!!!

Perhaps I should play online with a friend or something...

I didn't find that part so bad at all. Just watch the Boomer and keep on the move when he's ready to fire a shot or stay under cover in the gas station until he goes down. His gun has like a 30 second reload time so it can be pretty easy to judge when he's going to fire.

I kept dying here but it's only because I kept running out to save Dom because he's a fucking moron when the AI controls him and he runs right into the enemy troops.

I found it to have less frustration-situations than the previous game. No krylls or driving away from them.
I think the "worst" place was towards the ending where you have to split up and the enemies on the other side (there's a huge gap between the paths) could shot with the flaming arrow gun-thing at you. Probably spent 30 minutes trying to get from point A to B because I constantly got hit by an arrow due to my squad not killing the guys on their side fast enough.

But overall I think the events are planned out better than Gears 1.

Is anyone else really underwhelmed by the new online matchmaking system? I liked in the old Gears how you got to chose (to an extent) what map/game type you wanted to play. Now, they put execution, warzone, guardian (and I think annex/king of the hill) in one "playlist" and players vote out of a random two. Also, people can't join mid-game and you can't play multiple games with people without getting them all into a private party. It's pretty much been turned into the Halo matchmaking system, which is garbage.

Also, chainsaws and smoke grenades are way too strong. They removed huge knockbacks when getting hit with melee attacks, which is good, but now the chainsaw doesn't lower all the time and can lead to some really cheap kills. Also, knocking players down with a smoke grenade is idiotic. Half of matches have started with ten smoke grenades flying through the air and everyone being knocked down. By the time I get up there's a guy with a revved chainsaw standing over me ready to kill.

I really enjoyed the single player, but the multiplayer is pissing me off D:

man, Cliff Blezwhatever was hyping this all to shit prior to release. BIGGER, BETTER, MORE BADASS etc. Well, it's actually pretty good! I enjoyed the original Gears well enough but fuck there were some annoying bits. So far, I haven't been annoyed or frustrated once. I'm only play on Normal, granted, but I found even Casual in Gears 1 could be tough in singleplayer at least. Overall, Gears 2 feels BIGGER, yes, and more polished, refined, and varied. The framerate has been bumped up a ton - cutscenes are often smooth, and the game itself rarely stutters, unlike Gears 1. And man, I don't like to think i'm a graphics whore but christ some parts of the game are pretty - mainly the Hollow sections. Standing on a narrow natural rock bridge over a huge chasm, waterfall, and massive underground lake, and you can't help but go OOOOH PURDY.

It's also nice to see more character development (at least with Dom I guess), but also more story. Gears 1 was perpetually "go to this place" and all you're really trying to do through the whole game is set off a bomb. Gears 2 is a lot longer I find, and it has a lot more relevations and cool moments. Also brumaks!

I never thought I'd like a console shooter this much, but I've been converted!

While I agree with the above post I have one major issue with the game: It has tons of bugs. I've played it through three times now and encountered several glitches and bugs. It's terrible when you watch the credit list and see all these testers who failed at their job.

I finished Gears 1 not too long ago, and even beat it on Insane (with the help of random 12 year old mouth breather #72)

I did enjoy it all the way through, with exceptions to some of the Torque Bow (flaming arrow - hit/boom gun) and Troika (mounted gun) locations, and of course the mine carts.  But I still enjoyed it...  perhaps it was the Co-Op, and not having some stupid AI controlling Dom, but whatever.

I plan on getting Gears 2 soon; however, I can't get any games until after Christmas.  My parents never keep the receipt, so if I get 2 copies of anything, I'm stuck with them.

ok I take that back about no frustrating bits. The entire last section of the game is annoying because the game throws in too many turret situations and turrets are annoying. The reaver boss fight is too long, and after THAT you're stuck on a turret shooting down reavers. It's just annoying.

This is one of my favorites for 360 simply because it's got a passable co-op campaign.  I went through the entire thing with a friend of mine and it was a helluva a lot more fun than running through it solo.  Fuck all of these new releases that look like co-op games but then you rent it and get it home and realize you gotta get two Live accounts, another XBox, and another copy of the game just to play it with a friend.

As a game I thought it was....better than decent.  There are certain areas here and there that are just graphically beautiful.  The gameplay is nice and varied throughout the first 2/3rds, but it kinda seems like during the last hour or so of the game you're continually RIDING on something and spraying infinite bullets at tiny little specks on the ground and troika emplacements.

I didn't play the first one, but from what I've heard of it it seems that the story is improved a bit.  There actually were certain points in the game in which I felt genuinely sorry or afraid for those big angry meatball men....

Anyway, I just got this game. Playing through (first play-through entirely) Hardcore and I'm on the part where you fight the guy with the chainsaw staff. It's pretty fun... I don't have live right now, so I guess I should get another year of this to play this online...

We're playing this game atm.
Is it just me or is split screen really jpeg-y? Like a lot of fuzzy pixel flickering. Kinda fun, though the cover system is still a bitch. At least they fixed the grenades.

Just beat the game. When I wake up tomorrow I'll give the multiplayer a shot with the 48 hours XBL gold thing that came with it to determine if I should renew just to play this online.

The ending wasn't bad, but I might just think it didn't suck because I was thinking there was a good chance they were going to do a trilogy. Everyone seems to be doing it. and I personally don't have a problem with trilogies.

I don't think people have problems with a trilogy but I do think that some had issues that the ending left so much unexplained. All we were given in GoW2 were a bunch of hints.

yeah it was sort of annoying that basically NO QUESTIONS AT ALL were answered, and if anything, even more were added. The ending was incredibly abrupt, the "last boss" was neat to look at but definitely not intended to challenge you in the traditional sense of a final boss. Skorge was clearly the CLIMATIC BATTLE of the game.

Sounds suspiciously like The Matrix.
