A topic title that could only be expressed through caps. Expect a post from a suprised S4D, and then a disappointed S4D as soon as he realises there arn't any anime girls. So yeah, head spinning, potentially hilariously amazing, or just amazing. Ridley Scott. But then, you know, it could always be terrible. But at first read the WENN article:
Director Ridley Scott will helm the bizarre big screen adaptation of popular boardgame Monopoly.
The Gladiator moviemaker has been signed by studio giant Universal to bring the long-running game to life.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ridley will give the Monopoly movie a futuristic edge akin to his 1982 epic Blade Runner.
Corpse Bride screenwriter Pamela Pettler has also been drafted in to create a storyline for the film.
The unlikely subject matter is just one in a line of Hasbro games to get big screen makeovers as part of an exclusive pairing with Universal Studios.
Transformers filmmaker Michael Bay is producing a Ouija Board feature, while a film version of beloved classic Battleship is also in development.

The Hasbro-Universal collaboration "Monopoly" is jumping a large number of spaces up the board.
The feature project has brought on Pamela Pettler to write the screenplay; She penned Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride," Gil Kenan's "Monster House" and the upcoming animated adventure "9," produced by Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.
And Ridley Scott, who has been attached as a producer on "Monopoly" and has been mentioned as a possible director, is now officially attached to helm the project, with an eye toward giving it a futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic "Blade Runner."
In addition to Scott, Giannina Facio and Hasbro's Brian Goldner are also producing the movie, which will shape a narrative out of the iconic real-estate game. Lawrence Grey will oversee for Universal and Bennett Schneir will oversee for Hasbro.
"Monopoly" marks the latest Hasbro property to look to pass go and head to the big screen. Board games and branded properties have become more attractive as studios look to mitigate risk by finding built-in audiences.
Universal is working with Hasbro on several projects as part of a long-term development deal. Platinum Dunes is producing its feature adaptation of "Ouija Board," while the maritime classic "Battleship" is also in development. Elsewhere at Hasbro, Paramount this summer is set to release Stephen Sommers' feature based on its "G.I. Joe" character. And "Trivial Pursuit: America Plays" is now airing as a syndicated television program.

If you missed that too, Bay producing an Ouija board film, not so adventurous but expect explosions, perhaps some car chases...

british guys got one of the knockoff versions pretty much (like STAR WARS MONOPOLY only with england)! that's nuts. but yeah the parker brothers were americans and the traditional monopoly is named after US states for the most part. thats so funny to me.

Really? I always thought he was very much an old-timey (as in the 30's, when the game came out) American business tycoon. Huh.
Also Clue worked because it has a plot. Not a complex one, but a plot. You have a set of people in a mansion, and while they're in that mansion someone is mysteriously murdered. They then have to figure out which of them did it. That's all the plot you need to bulk it up until a movie. You don't need a huge plot, you just need A PLOT. Hell, you could make a Settlers of Catan movie if you really wanted (let's...settle this island...). There's not many plot points in a game in which a bunch of inanimate objects are buying up properties.
Even the other two sound a little more possible. The Ouija board would probably be more of like a key prop instead of the actual plot (what if....ouija boards are real....gotta trust it...to stay alive). Battleship at least has...SHIP BATTLES I guess. I don't know how that would really make a movie. I almost picture a kind of Ender's Game "THIS WAS ACTUALLY REAL" situation but that would be a p. bad movie. All of these will probably be bad movies but at least you can stretch these two into plots. I have no idea what monopoly could possibly be.

nah man I heard about this ages ago from a transformers site about the same time TF2 was announced. It's too long to be some prank.
Also I kinda get the idea of high fast real estate agents trying to one-up each other and build their fortune... Ridley scott will in his sepia-toned majesty show us the foils of capitalism in it's finest. there will be anger and heartbreak as old kent road gets brought out by a battleship and the hat&shoe alliance enter a fierce bidding war with a dog.

I thought Ridley Scott was going back to making sci-fi movies come on.
I mean this sounds awesome as long as there is actually a character called UNCLE PENNYBAGS but I always thought Scott was at his best doing sci-fi. Granted he's only done two as far as I know (Blade Runner and Alien) but I have never really given a shit about Gladiator or American Gangster or anything.

yeah it will probably be like kaworu described except the people will be nicknamed like iron and thimble and shit, and uncle pennybags will be in the background just chilling, maybe he'll go to jail for a couple weeks, maybe not. maybe someone will have to pay a luxury tax even.
speaking of different versions of monopoly has anyone ever played the boston/lord of the rings versions? i haven't played the latter but it sounds... pretty great

it kind of looked interesting the first time I saw the ad/trailer but then it felt like all I could figure out was it has Enemy of the State-style shots all over the place + some Bourne Identity maybe + Iraq or something + somebody yelling but I'm not sure if it was like frustrated or ow I just slammed my nuts in the car door kind of yell

Well when Aztec told me about this sometime back I was filled with various different emotions...I mean...it's kind of rare to work on a game based off a certain board game, then a few months later...BAM!!! a movie of all things!? Wow...
I'm more excited and happy then sacred and shocked...because well...this is absolutely awesome news!!!
For starters...this movie is being directed by none other then Ridley Scott, famous for making Gladitor and other such great movies, I just know he's going to do a wonderful job! Also a more futuristic look might also cater a interest even more...people have said: WHAT THE **** IS THE PLOT GOING TO BE? Beats me...but I have one for Monopoly 2 in the works, and it's possible to make a fairly decent plot...by no stretch is this movie going to win a award for storylines...but we will wait and see.
Second! It's does wonder for my game too...if anything is based off my game then it's even BETTER!!! Because say...Ms. Monopoly & Tax Man are in it and they look like my own characters...well that's almost like a dream come true for this man...seeing some of his own characters (even if they aren't his) in a motion picture is just awesome! But what if it's not connected to Monopolo? Well either way...we could base some of that for the next Monopoly game.
Third! This might get people more interested in the game again, fourth is more traffic for me...more movie hits on youtube...yes!!!
I for one am waiting for this movie more then the Smurfs now, I'm going to see it in threates the day it comes out! I'm hoping it's out around a couple of months after my game is released. YAY!!!
Oh...I suppose the other thing to worry about is Parker Bros finding out about this game and will do anything in their power to take it off the internet...doesn't matter because it's coming out and even if they stop me, it will be leaked all over the internet.
As for the no anime characters...this is something I don't really care about. I used the anime so we could give this game a different look and feel...
Anyways, I have to get back to work on my project. But this movie is going to be one of the best experiences of my life! I can't believe something as Monopoly: The Movie would be one of the more anticipated films in 2009 I would imagine. Awesome...truly going to be quite epic.
I hope it has a plot similar to one I'm writing down for the sequel, a young sexy black haired Ms. Monopoly, Tax Man! Or...Tax Men! And some cops would be nice...not necessary Stephine Law & Robbie Justice...but around the same lines.
Oh! And DONALD TRUMP must make a guest appearance!!! THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!!!

I think I was just joshin'.
This is the first I've heard of this. They'll probably set it in the 20's/30's and have some down on his luck 20 something guy that sells newspapers on a street corner. When suddenly he gets a visit from Mr.Pennybags who turns his life around and the guy slowly starts buying property and developing, then they'll probably work in some kind of stock market crash near the end where he loses everything. The end. Or maybe the stock market crash is at the beginning and he buys property and helps develop areas (thanks to Mr.Pennybags) giving more jobs to people and eventually brings the country out of the Great Depression.
