Title: usb issue?
Post by: neologix on November 18, 2008, 07:04:21 pm
recently upgraded my desktop. installed pdanet 4.12 on it cuz i don't have a proper internet connection at home, so i use my palm centro (which already has a data plan). whenever i try to go online more than a few minutes i get
BSODed. it's too quick for me to see the error proper, but it looks like a "DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" error. the bluescreen happens more often w/firefox 2.0.0.17 than w/ie6 (it won't stay online long enough for me to do ANY updating). is it not getting enough power or something? any ideas? any help?

keep in mind i'd windows update if it stayed on long enough to be online, but it doesn't. most of the setups and whatnot were DLed from another comp and transferred via flash drive.

relevant(?) specs
hardware
asus p5q pro mb
intel c2d e8400 @ 3.0ghz (haven't yet attempted an overclock)
ocz 4gb ram (3gb readable cuz of 32bit xp)
evga 512mb ddr3 geforce 9800 gt
seasonic 550w psu
wd 750gb/7200rpm sata-2
palm centro running palm os 5.4.9 (after the 1.07 firmware update) and pdanet (for xp) or usbmodem (for mac, maybe ubuntu if i try it)
stock hotsync cable bundled w/sprint retail centro

software
windows xp pro sp2 (with no hotfixes or sp3 slipstreamed in :(  )
palm desktop 4 something (don't remember if it's the newest one or not)
pdanet 4.12
ie 6
firefox 2.0.0.17

please help!

(edit - added gfx card info cuz i forgot b4 :P )

What was upgraded? What else have you reinstalled recently? What do your temps look like?

every bit of hardware except for the case fans and case was an upgrade. kept ide hdd connected until i can copy it to a partition on the sata; then the ide connection is going to a dvd burner.

temps run <= 60C, don't know yet how to properly configure speedfan (newest version) to increase the internal fans' speeds.

reinstalled most of my apps (somewhere btwn 20-30 out of maybe 40), everything hardware based has as updated drivers as i could remember to DL somewhere else & transfer via flash drive (a couple of things like logitech webcam or korg k49, both usb based, i just did a basic cd install, so i gotta DL updated drivers for those soon). i have a feeling this would probably be fixed w/an xp hotfix, but i'd rather have that run from a proper windows update if possible, else i have to manually DL in one shot the monster that is sp3 (and re-run uxtheme patcher as a result).

i'm holding off on any further reinstalls until i can get this thing online. suspiciously enough, pdanet works just fine on my alienware sentia laptop (which conveniently had a regular net connection to DL windows updates long before i installed pdanet).

are you saying you kept your HD with your windows install through this upgrade, and didn't reinstall windows? because if so this is your problem.

no, the sata drive is new and windows was a clean install. the extra ide hdd is purely storage and would normally stay but the mobo only has one ide port, and twisting the ribbon so both an hdd AND a 5.25" burner are connected is a PITA and physically impossible given the arrangement inside the case.

You really should get sp3, especially if you have the most up to date drivers for most your hardware. SP3 wasn't near as problematic as SP2, and actually gives a performance gain, so don't worry about it fucking everything up.

What voltage is your ram rated, and what is it running at? Does your mobo have any bios updates available? Read the details on them and make sure they apply. You might have one of the newer 45nm e8400s that some mobos don't fully support, etc. Also, are you using mobo/video drivers from the manufacturers of your cards, or the general reference drivers (NVIDIA/INTEL/AMD)?

k, so i spent a lot of time and DLed the sp3 iso from the ms website. this weekend i'll give it a shot and see if that fixes it. if not, i'll update the bios using the latest one for p5q pro i DLed from the asus website.

and yes, my e8400 wolfdale is 45nm, and yes, the p5q pro is listed as supporting it. the geforce drivers i used were initially the evga ones from the cd, then i DLed the "geforce power pack" from nvidia website and installed the v178.24 drivers from that. according to newegg, the ram (ocz platinum edition 2x2gb ddr2 1000) is listed as 2.1V; don't know what it's currently auto-set to, tho.

Check it in your bios. Usually "Del" at the first screen when you boot (where it shows ram count).
