Title: NXE
Post by: local_dunce on November 19, 2008, 06:23:02 pm
Anyone else think the "NEW XBOX EXPERIENCE" is a piece of crap? They've replaced the previous dashboard design with this shiny vector-linedots box interface. Instead of being able to browse through your friends in a list you have this horrible scrolling one-by-one system through their "avatars."

The avatars are FAR too reminscent of that shitty wii feature where you create your own little wii person that waves at you from the logon screen or whatever. They look like junk and are a completely un-necessary feature.

Instead of having nice compact tabs for browsing things like marketplace/media/games you have this SCROLLING BOX SYSTEM and it just generally looks pretty ugly. There is less CHROME-GREYS or whatever but still, overall I have not been impressed with anything I've seen so far. It also forgot my entire games library... well done NXE.

On the plus side you can supposedly install games directly to your HD now for faster loading times and quieter performance which I will be doing as soon as I figure out how, but aside from that I have found nothing impressive about this update at all.

GTA IV, Halo 3, GoW/2, Fallout 3, etc. Where did they get the idea that the people who enjoy playing these games would like to DRESS UP A CUTE AVATAR TO REPRESENT THEMSELVES ONLINE.

i haven't used my xbox in a few months cos i left it back home but i take it you don't need to install this? cos it looks like something i don't want. unless that installing games to hard drive is true cos it is noisy.

and if i refuse to install it does the "you've got a new update" thing always come up.

You can't NOT HAVE IT. You can refuse to install it but you wont be able to connect to live or anything like that. You will have to refuse it and then stay in offline mode and refuse it every time you turn your xbox on.

My roommate hasn't updated his yet so I dunno, I think it isn't required. Maybe he just hasn't gone on live or whatever. Edit: Oh ok yea that makes sense.

But yea this is really Wii-ish. I bet there reasoning is no one is going to not buy an Xbox because of it, and maybe they'll pick up some people who like to dress up avatars. Still, it all looks goofy as fuck!

You can easily press the xbox-button in the middle of the controller to use the smaller version of the previous blade-dashboard. It's basically the same but smaller, cleaner and faster.

Hey bro RTFM!

I haven't tried this out yet but I am 100% sure I read there are different interfaces you can choose from and that you can have one more like the old XBox interface.

It's not so bad. The avatars are sort of dumb but who cares. They probably won't be used much except in novelty games like that one about movie trivia. I actually sort of like the new dashboard and the interface feels quicker and smoother. Browsing achievements for instance is improved I think.

Also here's how to install games (and this is by FAR the best/coolest feature of the NXE)

BTW: YOU MIGHT WANT TO DISABLE AUTOSTART IN YOUR SYSTEM SETTINGS BEFORE YOU DO THIS SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO EXIT OUT OF THE GAME WHEN YOU PUT IT IN THE DRIVE

1. Insert the disc for the game you want to install.
2. Scroll to My Xbox and highlight whatever game you just put in the drive. It should be the first "block" on the My Xbox line.
3. Press the Y button on your controller.
4. Select the Install to hard drive option!!

Most games need like 6-7GB but if you've got the 120GB HDD it shouldn't be a problem. They seem to take around 5-10 minutes to install.

I've installed Fallout 3 and noticed multiple improvements. For one, the initial load time has been halved at least. Also, there's no lag or whatever when you're browsing your save games (before I noticed there was always like a 2-3 second delay when moving the cursor in the Load Game menu). In game load times aren't as dramatic but this is made up for by the fact the system is WHISPER QUIET pretty much. Seriously, it's so nice not to have your FLOOR vibrate from that fucking DVD drive in the 360, or have to hear the fan from across your house.

AHAHAHAH SILENCE. Man it is kind of unnerving that my ol' zbox is not making any noise.

Maybe we'll be able to put them into GTA 4!
In all seriousness, though, they fucked up the layout, I think. It all seems a bit unnecessary. Although, I am loving the fact that you can install the games directly on the system.
I wonder if I could rent some games and install them...

You still have to put the CD in. Microsoft's not that stupid!

If you try loading the game it asks for you to put in the game's disc. It's a check method, but everything runs off the system's memory itself.

Also, I think everything's newer, cleaner, faster, and all other things. I find it stupid how they made avatars but who cares really? Everything's pretty sleek, no more ugly big side bar covering half my screen, etc. etc. I've yet to test out the installation feature as I gotta free up a lot of space! (I only have like the 20 gb)

Dont you get it? The people who are into stuff like GTA IV, Halo3, GOW, Fallout 3, etc are already going to get an Xbox360. But now they'll get that audience, along with everyone who likes to DRESS UP A CUTE AVATAR TO REPRESENT THEMSELVES ONLINE.

They now appeal to 100% of the gaming market. Microsoft will be unstoppable, and the Xbox 360 will dominate the entire gaming market for years to come!

I've been looking forward to this for a week or two, and idk, it's not too bad. Admittedly I don't really get a lot out of it because I don't have my 360 hooked up to Live except for when I want to download stuff and shit like that, but it really isn't that bad! I'm enjoying how smooth and shit it is so far.

I think its alright, but the hard-drive thing is probably the best, just for the noise reduction. Although its almost like 'heh you have to buy bigger hdd's now' even though its optional.

I don't think its bad, i think it is just weird. Plus, the friends list is more like the classic friends list when u press the Xbox button and select friends, the friend channel on the dashboard is just so you can see a buddie's avatar. What I REALLY like is the community games section, where players who use XNA can create their own games and put them on the market place for download(sadly you have to pay to download these too, and the demos suck because they are time trials). Some of the games on it like coliseum are actually pretty damn awesome!

I think its faster and better to navigate. The only thing I don't enjoy so much is the avatar but guess what, it doesn't interfere with my regular activities at all! So I'm personally all around happy with it. I also like the new guide over the stupid SLOW SWEEPING FROM THE SIDE THAT MAKES YOU DIE A LITTLE INSIDE AS IT LOADS.

Xbox - Vista

That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I updated today.  The avatars are reminiscent of the mii's, but I don't really mind since...  well, I don't care.

Some things have improved as Rowain said, but I don't really like the new look.  I'm sure I'll get used to it in a short amount of time anyways.

shouldn't installing games also reduce the risk of the Red Rings? MS has fixed the problem in most newer models but if you've got a system like pre-2008, then I would think installing games so the DVD drive doesn't kick out so much heat should reduce the risk of overheating. That's assuming there's a lot of heat output from the DVD drive to begin with. At any rate, it'll extend the drive's lifespan.

Cool, the XBOX360ii.
If it loads faster and runs smoother than the old menu, I won't complain. Those avatars are just to attract anime people who only buy like Nintendo and Sony because they're from the land of dreams and little women.

People will argue that the Xbox 360 is the fratboy-Halo-beer console or whatever. And I get that.

I wouldn't count that in building the XBOX vibe.
First of all it's called XBOX which brings to mind people that chortle over cheese and how funny is this swiss. Second, it's just yet another game that switched over. That's the sequel to the Gamecube pinyata game right?

What?  Viva Pinata is an Xbox 360 exclusive (not a sequel to anything).

I am really loving this new interface.  Everything is just a whole lot quicker and a whole lot quieter.  Plus, the guide button does not take 3 seconds to open now, so I am entirely happy.  Also, stop complaining about the avatars.  You can just pick a preset and never look at it again because you still have a gamerpic and everything.
