Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: elkalo on November 25, 2008, 05:02:09 am
It could be drugs, it could be alcohol, it could be porn, It could be videogames. What is/are your addiction/s?

My addiction is coffee. I cannot leave in the morning without a cup of coffee, or sleep at night without a cup of cofee also. What about you?

Energy drinks. I can never have enough energy drinks, whether it's V, Red Bull, whatever.

Or maybe I'm just addicted to the caffiene. I dunno.

Caffeine, specifically Mountain Dew.  I get sick as shit if I don't have at least one every day.  It sucks ass.

I don't think I'm actually addicted to anything.

I partake of the booze, the porn, the cigars, the sex, the...I dunno what else. But, I'm not addicted to any of them.

I suppose I might be addicted to caffeine, but I don't notice any withdrawal symptoms if I opt to go a day or two without any in my system, so I guess I'm probably not really addicted to that, either.

It's not so much that I get the shakes when I don't have enough caffiene, I just love drinking it. Whenever I'm in town, I buy a drink or two. If I'm walking to school, I buy a drink at the shop down the road. On the way home, same thing.

Am I addicted to caffiene or just to buying drinks?

Do any of you that are addicted to caffeine really start shaking?  Because I just get awful headaches, the only time I shake is if my blood sugar drops (FOOD WITHDRAWAL heh)

Same. Computers are just way too good!
I do a bit of everything, like drink and smoking, but I only have a very slight smoking addiction which has bloomed greater over the last month...

Listening to music is something I'm weirdly addicted to, I pretty much have to be listening to it at every possible time.

This, unfortunately. Who would have thought man would spend most of his waking hours interacting with a machine?

But as a commercial artist most of my work is done on the computer, and as a gamer much of my play time is done on the computer. Add that to social communications (e-mail, facebook, forums), and you have every day ending up like the last!

Coffee.  Jesus Christ coffee.

Also I am a recovered porn addict?  I don't know guys porn is awful and I used to like . . . *need* to look at it.  Now that I don't look at it, it is like a daily struggle.  It is there in the corner of the internet whimpering maaaaaaaaasturbate to meee plzzzzzzzzz and it's really hard not to.  Like last night I really wanted to and I didn't but it is was hard and I stayed up most of the night not looking at porn.  I don't condemn anybody for looking at porn because I don't know if it is a legitimate problem for most people, but it really was with me.

Tetris. I will seriously play for 5 hours at a time on a school night, and I'm not that great. I'm really just trying to beat my friends' scores on facebook.

Actually, I used to have the same problem with guitar hero, but once I did beat them, then it totally lost its grandeur (if there were any to begin with).

Trying to kick peoples' asses at everything they do -- Isn't there a sort of mental complex for that?

music for sure, can't go a day without tuning up some freakout or some shit (I really hate those quiet carrages on trains, Like you jump on one by mistake and some guy moans that your ears are producing guitar solos that distract him from his important numbers.)
Gotta have a daily guitar fix, even if it's like five minutes before I go to sleep, just something.
I'll also just buy CDs for the sake of it, even when I'm poor and need the money for other stuff, if I see a nice album I'll end up buying it.

man I hate people who get on buses and trains and shit and blare music through their headphones loud enough that the rest of us have to listen to it. nobody else wants to listen to that shit, turn it down. I hate it when my sister pulls out her mobile phone and starts playing some stupid music. who gives a shit what music she likes she should play it sometime when we all don't have to listen to it. i hate people who sit on the bus and beatbox and hum tunes and shit, it pisses me the fuck off.

I used to be "addicted" to eating Doritos. At LEAST one bag per week, usually two... sometimes three. I'm thinking "...what even ARE Doritos?" They're some like... dried out potato with all this artificial flavouring and salt. Yuck. I still like to have a bag once and a while, but for the most part I've cut them out of my diet.

I've always been afraid of coffee because it seems like... literally everyone on this continent (don't know about Mexico) is OBSESSIVE ABOUT THEIR COFFEE. At my last job I started to drink socially (lol) we'd all go out for a coffee at the school cafeteria, etc... but since I was never a big coffee junkie before I would get such a big buzz. I stopped drinking it after a few months, though, and started to try to sleep more to compensate for the energy.

I used to be addicted to weed, smoking almost everyday for about... 7, 8 months or so... with a number of week-long breaks sprinkled in that time frame. After a while I started to realize that it just wasn't fun anymore. However, if I had weed in my possession, I would always endure a daily struggle to decide whether or not to blaze (and I always seemed to come to the same conclusion... ;)) but if I didn't have any weed in my possession, I didn't even think about it (yay non-chemically addictive drugs) So now I just don't buy anymore. Or occasionally I'll buy a little bit off of my friends for project-related purposes, such as playing Mother 3.

One addiction I haven't overcome yet is my addiction to getting art, graphic design, and marketing books. I don't think I've ever gone into a book store and come out empty handed. It's not like I read all of the books cover-to-cover... a lot of them are for reference purposes. Just having them in my possession... mmm... I recently went to an all-inclusive vacation in the Dominican Republic, reading a marketing book by the pool and the friends I made there were like "??? WTF TELL ME YOU'RE NOT WORKING"

No... I just... I just love sweet, sweet books...

What's interesting is that I inherited this addiction DIRECTLY from my father. His art book library is monstrous. And ironically when he caught me blazing a few times (hahaha yessssss), he would reference that addiction of his...

some other things i'm addicted to (not including chocolate) are:

- shooting hoops twice a week (at least! i'm loops about hoops!)
- trying new foods i had not tried previously
- looking at attractive members of the opposite sex
- reading...
- watching really good movies. serious, i watch at least two really good movies a month and if you told me to stop i don't know if i would.
- posting in my blog(s)

all right that's enough. there is a difference between addictions and "here's some stuff i do a lot". i know, not EVERYONE is addicted to something and even less people have much interesting to say on the subject but 1 bag doritos a week? rough stuff. and you can't be freakin addicted to positive things like reading and music. on the one hand, who cares just let people say stupid things no point in getting worked up but on the other if the word addiction is going to mean anything then maybe people who like to do harmless things and do them a lot could not say "i'm addicted to my hobbies!!!". unless you're joking like with "i'm addicted to sausages." or something random cos that's hilarious when people say things like that. that's such a random thing to say.

i mean maybe caffeine makes the cut but i think even that's a bit wishy washy.

I agree with people who blare it out, that's annoying, I don't have it that loud. But when it's the feintist noise that's barely noticable then it's kinda stupid. I was on the "quietzone" and some guy yelled to turn it down yet nobody on the table I was at even heard it (I asked them, we joked/chuckled about them kinda people) and one didn't even notice I had one on.
I just think businessmen don't like the idea of people enjoying themselves to be honest.

Being awake...

No seriously... I hate sleeping... I never dream anymore and I always feel crappy in some way afterward... and the time spent sleeping could have been spent doing something fun or productive. This is generally why my sleeping schedule is non-existent.

I'd say I have more addictions but they have all left me, so I guess I was never addicted in the first place.

Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: mkkmypet on November 25, 2008, 08:51:35 pm
hmm well let's see... i've had lots of addictions over the years. cutting, for one. it still is an addiction, and the withdrawal symptoms i have are that i scratch my arms pretty much uncontrollably. my skin also seems to get really dry if i dont do it for a while, or especially if i do it once and then have a few weeks where i don't.
i guess i'd count anorexia/bulimia as an addiction too. i'm kinda addicted to food in bad ways. i'm addicted to avoiding it sometimes, or maybe with binging on it (thanksgiving has always been my yearly, huge binge-and-purge where i tried to get "back on track" with not eating much and losing weight. but i'm gonna try not to do that this year).
and then there's nitrous oxide, DXM, and other stuff like that. i've done all that for a long time, though i always said i didnt. trying out new drugs is my new addiction, and while i know it's bad, i haven't had that epiphany yet that triggers me trying to stop.
as for other addictions, hmmm... computers (like Chainer), sweets, art (i can't stand sitting somewhere and not drawing/doodling. it's as natural as breathing), anime (Animæ... It's My Addictoin..!!!), and probably a million other things too.

Lol which race mix is your favorite?
The best porn I ever saw was with this doughy foreign asian guy having sex with a vocal black woman who kept calling him 'nigga'.

I don't really find porn all that satisfying, to me its all boring espescially the internet gonzo shit. But that one really stuck out for me cuz it really seemed like the people involved were kinda having fun with all the negative stereotypes in a lot of interacial porn.

I seriously couldn't stand Chicken McNuggets but I was always jonesin' for the Burger King ones

I remember they had these kind of ridges on them and I'd eat that part/side first like the crust on bread

I think the McDonald's ones were too greasy/rubbery for me to enjoy but I think the outer stuff made it, the McNuggets reminded me way too much of fishsticks with the outer breading stuff and I hated fish growing up (I still do but I'm better)

I dunno, there's all that bullshit about just one toke and shit which is clearly not true. But there are people who're actually addicted. Maybe it's actually the cigarette shit they're rolled up with that gets them addicted?
I've never got that one out because it's non addictive... yet...

Also I was a should we say minor addiction to alcohol a few years back. Like not binge drinking, but where I'd basically feel like shit and wanttodie if I hadn't had a drink. It did start from regular glasses/bottles of wine, to wine and vodka/whatnot. I think that was 2006 or something?

Well, I know a couple of guys addicted to the stuff. It's mainly because they're incredibly depressed and since it's an anti-depressant, it works wonders for them to the point where they're willing to smoke it quite excessively, just to stop feeling low. They don't seem to be addicted to it for any other reason, not even for zoning out or anything.

I get a headache if I don't have atleast seven glasses of water a day. But I think thats a good thing.
yeah, that's probably a sign of dehydration. I get that sometimes, too, if I drink too much coffee and not enough water.

Being an alcoholic is no fun, man.  It definitely doesn't coincide with this ROMANTIC NOTION some people have of it (::takes a hit of jack, writes great american novel.  My brother had some pretty serious problems and it was pretty sad for the most part, and my old boss' girlfriend was an alcoholic and would do things like wet the bed and wake up in pools of her own vomit on a nightly basis.  You really need to cut that shit off at the pass!

how come no one has said eating?  i thought for sure we would have had more comfort eaters around here!

i mentioned that. i binge for comfort, and then often end up purging it after.

wait is she talking about doing nitrous from canned air or LAUGHING GAS or are they the same and I never knew.

i'm pretty sure nitrous oxide and laughing gas are the same thing. dentists like to tell anxious patients (usually kids) that they'll give them "LAUGHING GAS" not "a sedative often referred to as 'hippie crack' " or anything like that, you know? laughing gas is more commonly used to refer to medical grade nitrous, which is the "good stuff". it's also called that because some people who use it will start laughing almost uncontrollably because of the feelings it produces. i don't know if you've ever done it, but i'ts really great; it makes everything all floaty and numb and the colors are different and you only hear very subtle background noises and the more common stuff is all muffled. time also seems to pass faster. maybe its just cause i was having so much fun with it, haha. the thing is, i was listening to my mp3 player while i was high, and it seemed like it only lasted for the time of one song when the trip was actually like an hour.

i got started on nitrous because of my dentist. i blame her.
i had a lot of really bad experiences with dentists when i was little, including one who was sued for malpractice and later for child molestation and torture. she took out 4 teeth when i was 3 years old that she wasnt supposed to take out, and she put a really old-styled metal spacer in my mouth that spanned the whole roof. it was there until i was 13 because i was too scared to go to a dentist and get it out. i switched from dentist to dentist because my dad's insurance kept changing. the next dentist i went to regularly was the dad of that guy who molested/raped me when i was 9, and he was kind of creepy too.
eventually i found a dentist who was nice and we had consultations before any procedures, and this was also about a year after i started seeing a therapist and got on my depression/anxiety medicine. i started out heavily on nitrous and another liquid medicine too that i took an hour or so before the appointment.
basically, i started to like going to the dentist because it meant i got good nitrous. however, if i dont have any dental problems (which i had a whooole bunch when i first started going since i hadnt gone to a dentist for years and the years of purging food brought stomach acids in my mouth, rotting my teeth), then i only get to go for cleanings. so nowadays, im the opposite of how i used to be: now i am always hoping that i'll have a cavity or something. haha.
i wanted nitrous more often, so i researched online and discovered i could get it from whipped cream and computer dusters and stuff like that. it's not as good, but it works in a fix.

pff this post turned out longer than i planned on but whatever

oh my... mkk that's horrible! i don't even know what to say to that all...

on a lighter note, laughing gas is AMAZING. if i could get my hands on the stuff the dental surgeon gave me, i'd be addicted to that as well. from what i've heard, whip cream isn't quite the same. i thought that just have you a buzz/lightheadedeness feeling... on laughing gas i was soo giggley! it was so fun! :D

I like,m 2 smoke math... luts of math

------------------------------------------

My biggest addiction is alcohol, or was, is... I don't know. I spent three years of my life in AN ALCOHOLIC HAZE which eventually climaxed with me getting pulled over for a DUI (which you might know about already) although that's really only the surface of what was going on and I did continue to drink a bit after that. For starters that isn't the first time I got in my car drunk. And I don't mean, "I had a beer now I can't drive!" I mean drunk out of my mind. I could always outdrink my friends and could consume quantities beyond what an average person could and still be standing. This meant that my brain's inhibition system was idling and every idea was a good idea! I don't want to turn this into a huge post, but some of the things I've done include: punching a random girl (no idea why I did this and I don't actually remember doing it), car hoping (getting into people's cars at like 3am and just sitting there for a bit and then leaving, calling the cops on myself, cutting myself, stealing a purse from some girl that I didn't know (and I felt so bad the day after that I wrapped it up in plastic bags and left it on their doorstep), mixing antidepressants with liquor, and basically just being A DICKHEAD. I'd often shake when I didn't have a drink in me and feel very anxious. Oh, and once I literally thought ZOMBIES were in my friend's basement and I pretended to be asleep so they wouldn't bug me. When I was in highschool I'd often drink before school and be really drunk my first classes then just go home at lunch, or I'd only drink a bit for the bus ride and then go to the liquor store at lunch and buy 2 40s of Vex and drink them alone in the park (sometimes I would puke because I had to drink them fast but I would continue to drink after puking). I'd often bring mickey's to drink in the washroom stalls. And a bunch of other shit I probably can't remember. I broke down crying a lot as well. That's due to a number of underlying issues including the death of my best friend. Anyways I'm doing much better now and I haven't had a drink in 21 days. I was at 35 days but I thought I'd have 1 or 2 drinks at a friends and that turned into 15 or 16. So I don't feel confident I can control it at all and it's easier just to abstain.

I'm not going to edit this because I'm lazy and yes I know it's rambling

I'm not afraid of being a drunk if I were to stay home because I probably wouldn't drink I'd just smoke :ganja: because its less work for me to get good right now. I'm not 21 yet though so maybe that will change if its easier to just buy a bottle of jack than to go hunting for weed.

I would say you won't meet an alcoholic shipping these days but I've actually heard of a few really bad alcoholics that will drink a fuckload of Listerine if they can't get any booze onboard.

Thats gross

yikes! what does it take for you to get drunk then?

Drunk as in "stumbling down, slurred speech, acting like an idiot" drunk I once blew .27 which is more than 3x the legal limit.  After a couple of shots I get that little spinning feeling, start sweating, and I start getting really happy (I cannot control my laughter while under the influence of alcohol at all I am the epitome of happy drunk).  To make matters worse, I don't seem to suffer any side effects from a hangover.  I feel sluggish, like my arms are made out of lead, but there's no "traditional" symptoms like body aches and head pain.

But yeah, alcohol is horrible.  I don't have any family in the area and I tell my friends to STAY AWAY when I start drinking.  I drink alone in my room because I know I'll get into a fight or something at a bar.  It's pretty bad when you're aware that you're talking to yourself at night and you can't help it because watching the shadows on your ceiling dance is amazing.

Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: headphonics on November 27, 2008, 02:08:09 am
tbh you would be surprised.  that was a complete joke because i think we all think of marcus sitting around playing anime rpgs and not getting wasted but one of the things that helped my brother stop drinking was playing wow, which is of course moving from one addiction to another but hey, i'd rather have him play wow too much than be an alcoholic.  really you just have to keep yourself occupied and your mind off the thought of I COULD BE DRINKING RIGHT NOW.......... and i guess if there is one thing mmos do it is KEEP YOU OCCUPIED.
Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: jamie on November 27, 2008, 02:16:57 am
yeah the keeping occupied thing is probably the most important. SHEER DETERMINATION can only get you so far in my experience. could be one week or two months later but if you haven't replaced the booze with something else, if you aren't really moving, then you'll forget why you ever stopped in the first place or make excuses for a drink.

i can see how something like an mmo game would keep you occupied but it's entirely likely for me that i'd use that gaming time as my drinking time, too. i done that back home when i had my xbox. got drunk and turned on some game so i could be totally immersed in whatever it was. done it with some movies, too. so maybe solitary activities which you can perform without much thought aren't the best. it different for everyone though so i dunno.

that's a big part of what going to aa meetings is about, just keeping you occupied and supported. i mean, i went to an aa meeting and i don't know if it was just me not being ready but i think the steps are ridiculous and the higher power bullshit is something i'll never be able to believe and nor do i really want to. i just want to not drink, and you can use aa for that at least so i've been thinking about going back. the meetings are like 2 hours long though, or the one i went to was, and i'm not prepared to invest that much time in listening to a bunch of spiritual mumbo jumbo from people who, besides being alcoholics, i can't see anything i have in common with. so that's where i'm at with that and it's probably the wrong way to look at it cos i'm not exactly doing terrifically.

alcoholism is fucking stupid.
Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: headphonics on November 27, 2008, 02:26:41 am
yeah i worried about this too, mostly because we both knew like three people who would get hammered and play wow and that entirely defeats the purpose.  the solution was that i played with him virtually all the time and really tried to GET HIM INTO IT so he would want to be sober for it.  this sounds gay because wow is gay but at that point i was legitimately worried about his health.  like you said solitary activities probably increase the likelihood that you would drift off and think "i should drink" so the idea was to make the game more of a social activity where people would be around to engage him/keep his mind on the conversation or whatever was going on in the game and off I COULD PROBABLY KILL THESE BOARS WHILE WASTED HMMM

ahaha yes i think this sometimes too.  i mean i am pretty depressed most of the time but WHO ISN'T; i don't really feel like i use it to create or anything.  it is a really shitty thought but having to STRUGGLE really makes a person a lot more interesting.  i look at smith or mid-90s frusciante or people like that and wonder how much of their genius came from serious problems and addictions they had that no one else would want.  but then it does not really hold true because about 90% of all shitty metal bands from the 80s were alcoholics and look where it got them, and at the same time you look at a band like sonic youth who are brilliant without any of the huge soul-crushing issues.
Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: jamie on November 27, 2008, 02:42:48 am
sometimes i wish i had some sort of unhealthy addiction (not counting internet) so i could make better music

this is probably half of the reason i was kind of okay with drinking the way i did for so long. cos i was a 14 year old whose big heroes were john frusciante and charles bukowski and if i wanted to be half as interesting and amazing as they were i had better pick myself up an addiction fast. so i kind of even felt PROUD for a couple of years "you guys are going to play football, huh? going to a school dance? i'll stick with my pal jack..." which was fucking stupid but heck i was fucking stupid. the other half was just me hiding from social situations, getting drunk would be a way to do that whether i was around people or not. that's a reason i still have.

i dunno if i was always gonna be a drinker, it isn't particularly heavy going in my family. my parents both drink, but not to excess. my dad's father was apparently a big drinker, my mum's mother drank herself to death and i have an uncle who is currently holed away in his house drinking to himself. so actually i guess there is some of it in my family but not in my immediate family.

that romantic notion of the alcoholic was something i hung onto for a while, but not anymore. it's not that you need to make an effort to get rid of it, it just withers away when you realise what you're actually doing to yourself. it's just an ugly and dumb situation to be in. i wish it didn't have to effect other people but sometimes it does and maybe that's for the best because the guilt is something that might help me kick it totally one day very soon. i'm seeing going home at christmas as a big chance to get sober and stay that way. still two weeks till then, and i figure i can hold it together till then.

Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: headphonics on November 27, 2008, 02:50:27 am
btw yourhero this is what i meant about romanticized visions of horrendous problems.  you see these HUGE ARTISTS that you respect as human beings and on some level you view anything that you associate with them as a positive character trait, not a negative one.  frusciante himself said he was able to sink into addiction because it was something positive he associated with ROCK AND ROLL and never thought of it as a bad thing until he was too deep to get out.  you think of these amazing novelists in the past century who you kind of picture sitting around with a bottle of jack, writing works of genius, and none of it seems as horrifying as it actually is.  like you know alcoholism is bad but you still, on some level, view it as kind of like an ultimate goal.  ahh yes i wanna be the isolated alcoholic writer.  thats who i wanna be.  like you admire these people so much that you even have admiration for their flaws.  maybe even especially their flaws.

when i was younger, i used to sort of look at self-loathing intellectuals with a kind of senselessly rapt admiration.  i do not know why.  it just seemed COOL and ROMANTIC and GLAMOROUS to me.  media influence blah blah blah whatever i don't really wanna talk about this for too long but it made me think that was an acceptable or good way for a person to be and it was only by the time i arrived at my IDEAL GOAL of someone moderately intellectual who was also filled with a deep, abiding contempt for himself that i realized how tragically wrong i was about basically everything.  it is the most bitter feeling to acknowledge that your perception of these people and their problems and how awesome it made them was completely childish and in reality it was a horrible life that no one should really want.  like you become what you wanted to be but all you can really think is "why the fuck did i ever want this?"
Title: What is your addiction?
Post by: YourHero on November 27, 2008, 03:15:42 am
wow, you're right. i didn't even realize how much of this happens at first glance, but i suppose there could potentially be a long of problems that people have which are justified by a role model with similar problems... i guess i just don't have any role models who are alcoholics, hence not seeing in that light.

i've tried teh miracle berry tablets. i did an interview for a local newpaper actually hahah they were pretty crazy...

snus

it's not even close to being as hazardous to your health, it costs barely anything compared to cigarettes and while it does contain nicotine and tobacco, it doesn't contain any other shit that'll keep you addicted to cigarettes. so yeah, most people i know that have stopped using nicotine in total have gone through the way of snus, though some have also stopped at snus. since it's a lot healthier and cheaper it's better than smokin' tho imo (and i suppose in the US if that's where you live it should have a novelty factor as well 8) ).

in regards to drugs making you better writer/musician I've always thought it was more of a symptom instead of a cause. many musicians like drake, smith, whoever, succeed because they are able to achieve some level of honesty that I think is indicative of how removed they are from the rest of society and drugs or whatever is more of an attempt to forget this. that's why they are rarely addicted to like LSD or the so called creative drugs and tend to just get drunk and inject H.

You could show them people with mouth cancer, tracheostomies, etc all the ugly stuff and it won't have an effect because their brain chemistry is already fuxx0red up. Yeah but the point is that you can significantly help avoid that by not smoking.
Always thought what would make a great stop smoking pot ad would be something like "Kid gets accepted into a college, Goes inside all excited then puts pot in it and rolls it up and smokes it."

I'm tired of all these lame ass "if you smoke pot your life will be all sad and moppy and greyscaled. I don't see many sad pot heads.

snus

it's not even close to being as hazardous to your health, it costs barely anything compared to cigarettes and while it does contain nicotine and tobacco, it doesn't contain any other shit that'll keep you addicted to cigarettes. so yeah, most people i know that have stopped using nicotine in total have gone through the way of snus, though some have also stopped at snus. since it's a lot healthier and cheaper it's better than smokin' tho imo (and i suppose in the US if that's where you live it should have a novelty factor as well 8) ).

no thanks, those pictures of fucked up mouths at the dentists office are scarier than the black lungs IMO, plus people who dip are constantly spitting into something and that's fucking disgusting.

snus is different than dip

but I agree that the insides of the mouths of people who dip are fucking frightening

Not so much an addiction as much as it simply being my "thing" but almost every other day I pick up either a french vanilla or caramel milkshake from this small upstart burger joint in my area.  Their shakes are incredible.

not so bright are you??

Snus doesn't 'cause any spitting at all, except of course if you use it as you would dipping tobacco. Snus doesn't damage your dental area unless you're completely ignorant as to how to use it.

cheesy porn, maybe?

This. It just won't be a memorable porn if it doesn't start with some ridiculous situation and then they say some horrible pick-up line which leads to the porn.

My favorite porn line:"You girls want a promotion? Well then let's start the interview *unzips fly* RIGHT NOW!" That and "Sherwood Like you to come over here and suck our cocks>"
