Title: Marine Girls
Post by: headphonics on November 27, 2008, 04:48:35 am
So I mentioned this group a few times and no one really seemed to know them very well, so I thought I'd make a topic about them.

They're a fairly unknown British post-punk group out of the 80s (this is not all I like even if it seems like it is!).  If there has ever been a group to stretch the post-punk genre it is Marine Girls, because really they sound more like 60s surf rock or some shit, but it is more a genre based around a movement than a sound, so whatever (also, at times there is a deliberate minimalism to their music that's reminiscent of Young Marble Giants, who are very much a post-punk act).  Basically, they are a really mellow rock outfit with very little in the way of percussion.  They use maracas and cowbells and very occasionally actual drums, but mostly it's just guitar and bass.  It is laid back shit and the female vocalist reinforces that vibe.  They made two albums, Beach Party and Lazy Ways, both of which I think are pretty good, but the latter is easily the best, I think.

I don't really know if they are up anyone's alley, but I imagine they would be.  It is just MELLOW POP basically but they are pretty good at it and it's nice.  The problem is they have exactly ONE SOUND and all of their music sounds very very similar.  Ordinarily I hate this in bands, but like I said, they put out two albums ever, and each is about half an hour, so I'm pretty alright with them having the same sound when it's for a grand total of AN HOUR.  Here's a few songs.

These first two are off Lazy Ways

And these two are off Beach Party

Couple of their songs are pretty good, the style reminds me of some old female-fronted bossa nova.  Very relaxing and good melodies.

Apparently this band is somehow related:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2ZyKPTNIPY

Oh, that's definitely the same vocalist.  It must be a collab or something!  She's been in multiple bands and is still an active musician iirc.

edit.  yeah it was a side project of thorn's at around the same time.  They released way way more albums than Marine Girls did; I should probably check them out.  From this song I already kind of like them more than MG.  It is the same vocals and tone, but I think the music is more interesting than riffs played on a jaguar with some bass and cowbell in the background over and over.  I still like Marine Girls quite a bit though!

if you like this band you might be into Nouvelle Vogue. They cover a bunch of awesome punk songs but in a totally different style..

Nouvelle Vogue are okay!  I do not really listen to them because the vocals kind of annoy me and it sounds like music that was made to be put in a movie soundtrack, but yeah they are okay I guess.

haha i like the vocals. i think they're french, right? you can definitely hear some kind of accent. i can see how it could potentially be annoying, though.

movie soundtrack? couldn't any band be that?

its Nouvelle Vague which is a play on words. they are french

I don't mind the vocals but it is very soundtracky music (all covers btw). I've heard them compared to MUZAK but that's mean, I don't think they're too bad! good for a movie.

lol man render you're a laugh a minute

yeah idk it could apply to all music but i always get the impression that nouvelle vogue would be like the kind of band who would write songs specifically for movie soundtracks.  it just sounds like it is music meant to GO ALONG WITH//SUPPLEMENT SOMETHING ELSE more than to stand on its own.

they dont sound anything alike besides MELLOW//FEMALE VOCALIST imo.  the instrumentation and aesthetics are totally different.  one comes off as easy listening lounge music and the other seems like minimalistic rock music.  also marine girl's vocalist has a radically different voice and vocal style in general

also i called them nouvelle vogue because i did not notice you spelled the differently and did not pick up on the fact that it was a correction

ps this is the one i saw.  it is not a very good cover in that it does not maintain tone of the original song at all but i guess i kind of get off on WHISPY VOICED FRENCH GIRL//PARLOR GUITAR

whoops i put it in quote tags

Nouvelle Vague are really shitty. I remember in high school my music teacher playing one of their records to us in class and it was like a lounge cover of 'Too Drunk To Fuck' and I actually thought it was a very sharp parody of terrible ironic hipster music, and then it went on to the next song and it was pretty much the same thing so it turned out that, nope, they really were just terrible ironic hipster music. To be honest I've always thought of their stuff as not even music for films so much as music for people who wish they were living in a film, like they'd put that on in the backround and pretend they were living in a Tarantino movie or something.
Also I hadn't heard of Marine Girls before but they don't really sound like my thing! I kinda liked the second song but even then it just seemed more like something that was pleasant than something I'd actually sit down and listen to. The vocals remind me a bit of the Raincoats, though.

oneof their vids is of them covering some song and the vid is from bande a part, the famous...oh god...godard? I think that's who did it. yeah that movie. the movie soundtrack thing is apt other than that though because soft whited up covers feat. mellow bitches is a big thing in soundtracks these days.

for some reason, i have heard of marine girls. i listened to them a little bit over the summer this year while i was working. sometimes i liked it and just enjoyed the mellow sounds but i don't listen to them anymore cos it gets pretty boring fast, and it's not really my kind of music.

also nouvelle vague are cool, i should get their albums again. they done a cover of a song by a band called the wake, and the bassist for that band was my psychology teacher a couple of years ago. that band wasn't very good though, but i didn't tell them that. apparently they were kind of successful and went on tour with primal scream a couple of times.

this is the song they covered:

the video is just some person's holiday slide show. it's not the greatest song but i like the chorus.

it is kind of a mood thing i guess.  i really like her as a vocalist but idk, sometimes i am in the mood for PASSIVE MUSIC and i think they are good at it.  it is like it serves the purpose of gay lounge music without being gay lounge music.  as in, they do not do awful covers and they have an okay sense of melody and rhythm.  i am liking this subsequent project of hers a lot more.  back to marine girls, though; i think it is uh, not emotive but it kind of EVOKES IDEAS more than most music does for me.  it is similar to nostalgia but not quite.  it is more like they remind me of a SPECIFIC PERIOD and i am not pining for it or anything but it is nice to look back and remember that it happened.  it is like looking at an old photograph and i know this sounds VERY MUCH like nostalgia but it is not!!

sorry to go back to nouvelle vague, but i thought i'd mention that i think that almost all of the songs they cover are better in original form, but they're all amazing songs, so if i'm not in an aggressive enough mood to listen to DK, i'll throw on some nouvelle vague and there ya go... lol

i can't say marine girls impressed me that much, they're definitely not bad though.

there is a lot of nostalgic music for me... i could name a tonne of stuff that i wouldn't consider "good" but because it brings back good memories, i like it anyways :\
