I bet the shoes you bought were made in a sweatshop by asian kids for 0.05$ an hour

--

Speaking of shoes earlier today I had the idea to cut a hole in some old shoe's heels then fill it with soil and plant a shrub or something in it so that the root grows through the hole on the sole and the rest of it through the hole you put your foot in. Eventually the shoe will dissolve but I think the effect would be nice!

I called her a consumer whore and

she doesn't want to be friends with me anymore

No but I bought a magazine, and that was it, not bad considering I didn't know it was Buy Nothing Day until just now...

College communists usually revert to a consumerist way of life once they get out of college and start making enough money so they're just as guilty as people who don't care about co-ops

why not just buy single layered if you're going to do that?

I thought the whole point of double layered was a 'comfort' thing and to stop it tearing midwipe and getting stuck in your bum. I see 'comfy' toilet roll as more of an essential than a luxury really

Maybe buying one two-ply roll is cheaper than buying two one-ply rolls.
People who do this do not care about such things as getting poop on their hands, because they are scuzzy.

Uh actually that is correct. TV's are measured diagonally so a 42' would split into 4 21' TV's. Check it out yourself.

Yes, I already got that and added IM IDOT on the end of that post. For some reason I did it by area and then immediately realized what I did but thank you for your helpful post!!

I bought Gears of War 2 because is was 20% off and lunch. I was planning on buy Gears 2 new eventually anyway. but IMHO both "Buy nothing day" is stupid as well as buying a bunch of shit you will never use or buy otherwise on Black Friday. I might have bought more if I had more money or if the mall near my apartment had more then FASHIONS AND CLOTHES AND MORE CLOTHES CLOTHES CLOTHES... clothes shopping is the biggest waste of money... then again I may be biased considering the shorts I'm wearing have a gaping tear in the back... The only clothes I buy are for:

-OH GOD this look comfy
-HAHA this shirt has a lame/funny thing on it
-has a image that depicts a show/movie/game/anime/cartoon that I like

People say that this is just as bad, my reasoning for why it is not is this:
-I see clothes as nothing but something to keep me warm or comfy or keep me from being arrested for running around nude. not to look good.
-If I'm wearing a shirt with a funny/lame quote someone may bring it up, thus starting a conversation.
-If I'm wearing something with a character from some series I like, some else that likes it will notice, thus starting another conversation with out me having to say "OH HEY I LIKE HALO/GEARS/INVADER ZIM. DO YOU LIKE HALO/GEARS/INVADER ZIM? LETS TALK ABOUT HOW AWESOME HALO/GEARS/INVADER ZIM IS!"

Basically clothes that actually have a purpose rather then modesty/shame/looking good

We got a bag of some nice old silverware for $5.

Still, silly upper-middle-class anti-globalization people not buying things for a day is not really a substantial form of economic dialogue. If you really wanted to help the people allegedly hurt by consumerism, there are far better methods.

Do you do this because they are openly a fan of something nerdy or what some people consider "childish" or do you typically find people that are fans of anything enough to wear t-shirts of it to be generally annoying/obnoxious?

Well then those bitches are fucking shallow and I would not want to with them anyway I honestly wouldn't care if I had a girlfriend that wore gaudy/ugly/tacky clothing (as long as the reason was because she didn't care rather then thinking it looked good)

I care little about how I look but I find it incredibly annoying when someone nags me about the way I look, long uncombed messy hair/typically unshaven. because it seems so petty and pointless to me. The only thing I can understand someone being avoided due to stench/they need a fucking shower which is actually a relatively common issue at my college because of people playing games all night and then skipping their shower cause they'd miss/ be late for class if they took one. The only 'look' based stuff I care about is weight issues. I'm not exactly lean or even very healthy, but I wouldn't say I'm fat either. It is all about what you look like in the buff and I'll admit I don't look particularly great.

lol u dress like a 12 year old
Ok then. Maybe this is something 12 years old's have right. I really don't give a shit though. :P
Though again I personally associate this with my nerdiness then childishness. Also, everyone I know at my college wears shirts like this a lot or at least at some point other then maybe a select few (one friend particular comes to mind). and while I personally don't buy clothes for the sake of looking good other people will buy and then give them to me as a gift and I don't turn down/waste gifts/free stuff.

EDIT: yeah, getting laid for me will be kind of a bitch because I'm picky and I'm not motivated enough because it seems like to much work/time/money/risk. Then there the fact that I suck in social situations with woman that are actually interested in me which is a rarity in of itself... either that or there are times that I'm oblivious to a girl trying to get my attention.

you basically have three options: live in a co-op or communal society, become a revolutionary, or renig on your ideals and become a consumer (the overwhelming choice by most of them).

people are weak i guess?

Why would you think I'd care about "cred"? I wear shit to show I like something in this case not to say I have cred. I don't go to concerts they are to expensive thus I can not afford to go to them. This "cred" seems pointless and shallow to me.

and yeah though I actually agree MOST people seem to be annoying rabid fans when they wear clothes depicting the things they are fans for. but this isn't always the case, and I typically give people the benefit of the doubt and don't immediately chose to avoid anyone based on what they wear. I'll make note of it if they are wearing a shirt with pikachu or link on it, but that wont keep me from having conversation with them.

lol dude stop trying to defend a lack of dress sense. its not a good thing. does your mom buy your clothes for you.

edit: the only people that will hang out with you are just as socially inept as you. enjoy never having a life because of your lack of self respect

edit: buy nothing day is dumb as shit
But I don't lack dress sense. I know what looks good, I just see as too expensive to bother with/don't know how to get it cheap.

also, I'm not socially inept, I'm just awkward around girls because I'm not used to hanging around them. I see the girls problem as something easy to over come, I just haven't gotten around to trying because of the lack of girls at my school. I'd rather not weird out the few that are here.

i'm more in shock that in a full commitment to be an iconoclast dom has decided to defend mcdonald's shitty fat clogged breakfast.
It isn't just McDonald's... pretty much all fast food is pretty awful. it is to bad that all my friends like it and when ever we go out they'll suggest fast food I'll be like "I'm not eating shit".
There are a select few fast food places I can tolerate though.

EDIT:
wait, do you seriously avoid people if they are wearing a shirt with a band/tv show on it?  that is seriously the dumbest shit, I'm wearing a Sonic Youth shirt right now what is your opinion on that.
Actually he avoids them because he assumes they are just obnoxious fans. He doesn't avoid people if he thinks the thing they are a fan of is stupid. Also for him band shirts are different because they are trophies to signify that he went to a concert.

No, I agree. I've never tried also because I end up saying the exact opposite thing of what I should say so I've avoided anything more then being a good acquaintance. Though there is one girl that I wanted to try a relationship with but I was to slow because someone else got to her first, and I don't think she had the same interest in me anyway.

i just love the self-righteous reactions from people who have their excessive consumption called into question. I'm just as guilty as the next guy, but at least i don't try to defend it and can crack a joke or two about it.

its funny because panda said "this is avery diet coke topic" and I was like "yes...yes"

still I thought it was pretty clear from the lack of any coherent defense and a WIKIPEDIA LINK that this was kind of "haha yes lets stage a consumer protest on the one day we are guaranteed to fail" and less "IM JOE...THIS IS HOW I POST" but yeah so many people were just like "um its stupid ur stupid....UR THE STUPID"

Though there is one girl that I wanted to try a relationship with but I was to slow because someone else got to her first, and I don't think she had the same interest in me anyway.

I don't even have a drivers license or ever had a job... I'm pretty lazy.

My hormones were raging. As I looked across the room, nothing fazed my gaze for her. Her beautiful flowing locks, despite being covered in grease attracted me like no other.  The room seemed to fade away – no longer could I see Captain Kirk’s face plastered around the room like some sort of cultural revolution, no longer did I notice the cosplayers and fellow fans, no longer did Star Trek even cross my mind; the convention was, although the most important day of my year, worthless once I saw her.

It felt as if my pounding heart was about to explode out of my chest, and as I reached into my Limited Edition Jean-Luc Picard pants, I could feel my reproductive organ in its most excited state since I wrote my last volume of Harry Potter fanfic erotica. Never in my life had I wanted to perform coitus more.  I gulped and began to take baby steps forward. My armpits were getting sweaty; my Invader Zim t-shirt underneath my matching Limited Edition Jean-Luc Picard top was beginning to stick to my body and I could feel my unpopped acne beginning to ooze out unto it.  I calmly took out my mp3 player and scrolled to Dream Theater. The perfect, soothing solution to such a situation.

She was now less than fifty feet away from me. I took a puff out of my inhaler and ventured forward. This was going to be the luckiest day in my life. I could still remember the girls in high school who called me a “loser”, but what did they know anyway? They liked guys who couldn’t understand the true essence of Sci-Fi and who couldn’t dress if their life depended on it.  This was going to be my chance to prove them wrong, to prove that I, warpped655, could interact with another female human being and that I would make love to this sweet creature.

Twenty feet. My firework was ready to go off. But what’s this? As I looked over to her, I could see another man, a pathetic attempt at a Star Trek fan, with a cheap, ebay-bought Picard costume approaching her at supersonic speed.  I froze. My gut told me that competition is a disgusting form of male chauvinism and stereotypical dominance, how could I take another man on? The initial shock feeling was swept over by a sense of relief in my body – as I took a closer look at the girl, I could see that she too, had bought her non-limited edition Deanna Troi costume from the same ebay supplier as the other pathetic loser that was now beginning to make conversation with her.

What fools, I was too good for her anyway.  :welp:

oh this isn't too bad! i wrongly assumed that shit costed a ton.
It does.  For example, the raw chocolate nibs cost 16 bucks for a 1 pound bag (online plus shipping) but I only put a small handful (like 10 nibs they are tiny) and I don't use them everyday.  For the regular food, I buy mostly organic stuff but for some fruits I buy conventional for example bananas, because they are the least effected with pesticides (they have the huge ass skin that you peel off it's harder for the pesticides to seep through than with, say, an apple) and if a chain grocery store offers an organic product with there brand name I buy it cause it's cheaper (For example silk soymilk is like 2.79 for 32oz, whereas store brand soymilk that is organic is like 1.99 and tastes the same (I use almond milk mostly now though).  I buy frozen fruits and veggies because they last longer, are just as nutritious as fresh (mostly (the stuff bought at the store isn't really fresh anyways),) and an alright price.

When I was raw it was super expensive because some recipes called for like 1 cup of cacao nibs that's crazy.

150 a month is not bad at all man.

for one person (not three rajew) not buying ANY MEAT CHEESE MILK EGGS (the major expenses when I go to the grocery) it's kind of pricey. then again my family has a built in crazy deal sense and my mom regularly saves like half the price of her groceries when she goes about once a month so maybe I'm just crazy.

also rajew shitty food isn't necessarily saving you any money. buying a bunch of tv dinners will possibly end up costing you more than making the same food if you amortize the cost down.

i dont even disapprove at all, it just doesn't surprise me that his budget is equal to that of a meat eating guy because dok loves fresh organic stuff and that always tends to bump up the price plus he buys some gimmicky stuff that by virtue of not being mass marketed costs more.

he's not really SAVING money which is why it's kind of pricey because he should be. fuck he doesn't even buy BUTTER dude.

no i meant like, low budget food. Like ramen that costs 50 cents for 20 packages of it (may be a slight exaggeration) etc. and my post was more responding to yours about how your mother feeds a family of 3 on less than 150 (a week??) apparently!!

well typically my grocery shopping costs 100-150$ per week or two weeks for 3 people. this has been kind of inflated as of late because holy shit grocery prices have been going sky high lately. sometimes i swear it would be cheaper to eat out than to buy shit like MILK BREAD AND FRUIT.

Hey I eat ramen for meals. It tastes like shit, but we're never making bank so we eat it cause it's cheap. It's not the ONLY thing I eat obviously. My mom generally buys these fatass packs of rice and pasta which last us months, so I eat those too. But I eat mostly grains because fruits and veggies and meat are all sort of expensive on a daily basis. I actually get my vitamin C from school fruits (yeah.) and Flinstones vitamins.

Ramen's fun to eat with poached egg and tabasco sauce, by the way.

it really don't man.

I know this sounds like HEH IM A HEALTHFOOD JUNKIE but I drink about a soda every two weeks and if you don't have beer it's absolutely perfect accompaniment to pizza or whatever, but people really need to regard sodas as candy instead of juice. namely, as a treat once in a while.

I remember Velfarre or someone once said they couldn't go a week without a mountain dew, that's bad. I've known a few people who might actually be addicted to soda, it's basically horrible for you.

Smoking isn't healthy either and that doesn't keep people from doing it

I don't want to argue with you because that makes no sense, also

COFFEE is responsible for as much as a third of daily consumption of the cancer-causing chemical acrylamide, research by the United Nations has found.

The study reveals that coffee may give those who drink it anything from 13% to 39% of the acrylamide they consume — only chips and crisps are responsible for greater quantities on average.

Acrylamide is produced during cooking, particularly high-temperature processes such as frying and roasting. Some of the highest levels are found in chips, crisps, biscuits and bread, but it has now emerged that roasting coffee beans also produces significant amounts.

“The original concern with acrylamide was related to french fries, chips and crisps. Continued analysis of other food products has shown that they contribute to overall exposure as well,” said Dr Angelika Tritscher, a scientist with the committee that conducted the study.

The new research has been carried out jointly by two UN agencies — the World Health Organisation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation. It uses data from 17 countries, including Britain, to build up a picture of the amount of acrylamide consumed by people with a range of eating habits. Those who consume fresh, boiled or steamed food generally consume far less than people who eat fried or roasted meals.

Acrylamide has been used in industrial applications such as production of water purifying chemicals since the 1950s. In 2002 Swedish researchers found high levels in some foods. Experiments on laboratory animals have shown acrylamide in large amounts can cause cancer and reproductive problems.

Since 2002 several studies have been undertaken into acrylamide in food and its possible dangers, although not all experts agree it is hazardous to people in the amounts usually consumed.

A report commissioned by the National Toxicology Program in America concluded: “Considering the low level of estimated human exposure to acrylamides (we have) negligible concern for adverse reproductive and developmental effects.”

The UN research will be discussed in April by the Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants, an international standards body.

The research does not assess the health risks of acrylamide, but a separate series of studies is under way to investigate this. One of the largest studies is a European Union project looking at possible links between the chemical and breast cancer.

In Britain the Food Standards Agency is working with the EU and the food industry on guidelines to help cut the level of acrylamide produced in manufacturing.

The level of acrylamide in a cup of coffee depends on how strong it is and how the beans are roasted. There is little difference between concentrations in instant and ground coffee — both about 290 micrograms per kg — because the chemical is a product of the roasting of the beans rather than any subsequent processing.

The level of roasting makes a difference, however. Separate research has established that acrylamide levels peak in medium-roast coffee, are lower in the half-roast variety and drop off when beans become dark roast.

Many scientists in Britain say that until the risk posed by acrylamide can be assessed with greater confidence it might make sense to consume as little as possible.

There is no doubt it (acrylamide) has been identified as carcinogenic in animal models, so the best advice is precautionary, to minimise exposure,” said Professor Vyvyan Howard of the school of biological sciences at Ulster University.

Really if you can't kick a caffeine addiction you should switch to red/white/green tea because that is infinitely better for you. I've been looking into teas a lot lately and I try to keep up with new scientific research on the effects of their flavinoids and caffeine and that has basically turned me into a regular tea drinker. I'll probably switch to tea after I move this/next month.  I can't stand the canned teas but can drink home brewed ones, but I live with far too many people right now and there's usually too little fridge room for a jug of tea.

Canned... teas. I looked on the label of one of these this morning (my mom bought a case of 'lipton green tea' or whatever because I started drinking tea in the last month so GOTTA HAVE IT CANNED i really don't want it) and it is basically pop (aka soda) with 'green tea powder' in it. I have no idea what even constitutes 'green tea powder.'

the best part is how consistently inri tries to get under dietcoke's skin but is outmatched in every way.

this is the best because we know in his quest ONE DAY he will finally hit a button and the dicks...the dicks will flow.

Also it tastes good.
Tea is the best drink ever.
But its basically leaf broth so I can see why some people wouldn't like it.

But acylamide concerns aside I love my coffee like I like my women: strong and black! Besides coffee has been studied pretty extensively for cancer risks with no positive or negative findings. People eating a bunch of fried shit are the ones who should be worried about acrylamide giving them cancer

I believe it goes like so; I like my coffee like I like my women: In a burlap sack, bent over the back of a donkey!

you basically have three options: live in a co-op or communal society, become a revolutionary, or renig on your ideals and become a consumer (the overwhelming choice by most of them).

people are weak i guess?

Get some coffee or tea,  its cheaper and soda is basically carbonated corn syrup and that's gross.
Read The Omnivore's Dilemma, a soda is pretty much 100% corn.

a lot of the mass-produced iced tea is pretty much the same thing as soda. almost all mp drinks blow. lipton has the shit iced teas that come in a soda bottle and have CITRUS FLAVOR but their glass bottle ones are good.

I bet you can make it with MUD, which is especially tasty when it's chock full of minerals.
