I remember when I heard about the Phillips CD-I and its reputation for being the worst gaming system in history(that's debatable) and I was suprised to find out that a shitty Mario game and 3 very bad Zelda games were released for the system. Now thanks to my curiosity, I played these games and GOD DAMMIT are they TERRIBLE. Now the Mario game (Hotel Mario) didn't have THAT bad of gameplay, kind of flawed but the cutscenes were really what made the game corny and just . Then I tried the Zelda games hoping they were good, neither of them were in fact they were worse than hotel Mario! To my suprise, the AVGN reviewed the Phillips CD-I not too long ago and he had most of the same reactions to these games as I did. So what do most of you people who actually played this shit box think of it? Any good mentionable titles on it? Do you think it's the worst system ever made?

I've never seen one, I don't know of any good games, and maybe.
Now my question is, how did you get your hands on one? let alone those games?

I think it's a good example of how executives think they can just make an useless plastic box with circuitry, market it and expect to make millions from it. I wonder what the people who were involved in it are doing now? Not in a "hahaha, they ruined their careers!" sense, I'm just curious.

The CD-i is definitely not the worst system. There are systems that came out that no one even remembers anymore because they did so poorly. I've never played a CD-i, but it has a few games that were out on it and other systems at the time that are good. The 7th Guest, Brain Dead 13, Dragon's Lair, etc. Sure, that's not very many, but that's better than systems that had ZERO good games for them. There's no reason to get a CD-i to play these games since they were available on so many other systems, but that doesn't mean the CD-i is the WORST EVER OH GOD I PLAYED THE ZELDA GAMES FOR IT AND OBVIOUSLY EVERY OTHER GAME ON IT IS LIKE THIS.
Obviously the CD-i is every low on the list of video game consoles, but it's not THE WORST.
You know I'd say that the Virtual Boy is even worse than the CD-i, because there were places that had boxes of them and never even knew they had them in stock because NO ONE WANTED THEM, and it actually made a lot of people sick when they played it, I would consider that grounds to be called worse than something that at least had a few good games that WON'T make you throw up when you play them.

I played the CD-i many, many years ago and I'm pretty sure it was Mario hotel. I remember that the controller were awful (at least the one I used, it's the one with the misplaced joystick) and the game sucked pretty much too.
I wonder if the guy who owned it still has it. Maybe I should buy it just for laughs.

Virtual boy looked interesting in the magazines
The used game shop in my hometown has one (mostly just for novelty, I doubt anyone will ever buy it just like they'll never buy the 3DO or Sega CD they have), I want to ask them to let me try it sometime just to see if I vomit.
They also have a power glove and R.O.B. (they use R.O.B. to hold their business cards), if I ever won the lottery I would make sure that the news didn't get out around my town until I had the chance to walk in, buy all this display stuff they never really expect to sell, and go "HEH...YEAH...I'M GONNA GO PLAY WITH ALL OF THIS STUFF TONIGHT"

man, this one time we ran into a drunk guy wearing a power glove, he then proceeded to press some buttons on it and wanted to give us a brief history lesson about it.
Ever since then I've wanted a powerglove, but I have never found one yet.

You know I'd say that the Virtual Boy is even worse than the CD-i, because there were places that had boxes of them and never even knew they had them in stock because NO ONE WANTED THEM, and it actually made a lot of people sick when they played it, I would consider that grounds to be called worse than something that at least had a few good games that WON'T make you throw up when you play them.
I never owned a Virtual Boy, but when they came out I played a demo unit of one fairly often. It was some Wario game. I never got sick from playing it, but if I did play it for more than a couple of minutes I would start to develop an intense headache. I couldn't see how someone could play it for more than 5 minutes straight. The game itself was decent though from what I remember.

well for about $100 you could come down here and buy one! it's....really not worth that much unless you're some rich collector though!

i have never played one, i just know that the majority of people that played them got really bad headaches/nausea

the cdi and zelda games usually ebay for over 100 bucks each. Did you seriously pay over 300 dollars because you were curious about something you heard was really bad or did you just watch the latest ANGRY VIDEOGAME NERD episodes on youtube where he reviews the same games you wrote about in your post?

I'm going to guess that second one, but if he did play them I'm hoping he just emulated them.
Also, this is true about the 3DO and is possibly true about the CD-i and the Sega CD (haven't looked into it but it's very likely that this is true), but if you can afford the system, you can afford ALL of the games, because they had no copy protection (since no one really had CD burners at the time). As long as you can find the download, you can play all the games on the original system. Possibly foreign games too, I'm not sure. So if you ever really DID decide you'd want a CD-i--although there is NO reason to buy this thing, let me restate that it SUCKS ASS it's just not the worst system ever--then make sure it's copy protection free and buy just the system.
But don't. Because it's not worth it.

Emulation my friend, however my uncle has a phillips CD-I with the two zelda games and those are the two game I played on the system when I went over to visit recently. I emulated hotel mario before I played that though and I still think it plays alot better than the two zelda games I played(possibly because I am using a keybord but others said it controls a bit better than zelda)

Yeah, this is what I was saying before with "consoles that no one has even heard of because no one bought them", I just couldn't think of any examples at the time because they're so NOT MEMORABLE.
Although now that it's not held up to the standards of what should have been CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY and wasn't, I must say the Vectrex looks really neat. I just really like old-timey vector graphics though, so that doesn't make it a good system by any means, just NICE FOR ME TO LOOK AT.

Velfarre, the vextrex is really neat. For all it's graphical limitations it was the first console with 3D support. Everything had that really primitive look, but it was really cool.

speaking about the copy protection thing it's cool to know that if I ever did find a Sega CD game somewhere and it was worth playing, I could get it and play it without needing the system. Well if I cared that much I could just find ROMs too but I dunno
could the Sega CD even play music CDs btw?

That sounds cool as hell. I feel like the store I was talking about earlier has one of these too, up on a high shelf behind the counter. Part of me wants to work there just so I can play with these things (they do a lot of internet sales otherwise they would hardly be in business because there aren't a lot of people going in there).
Also, I don't know what all the Sega CD can do, but the 3DO can be used for karaoke (displays the lyrics and shit from karaoke cds), which was probably the only reason it wasn't lost a long time ago, since my family used it for a karaoke machine for many years. My dad is thinking about buying me a 3DO just so he can have a karaoke machine again, since my brother reclaimed ours (I guess it's technically his but when you spend $700 on a game system for your kid, even if it was more than 10 years ago, and the kid you bought it for doesn't use it AT ALL, I think you should be allowed to keep it in the house years later)

CD-I was marketed as an educational device and in many ways it was one. Although a few non education games include Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, Link: Faces of Evil, and Zelda Adventures for the three Zelda games that happen to be on it. Not to mention that shitty Hotel Mario replaced Mario's Wacky Worlds, a typical platform game, which was supposed to be the sequel of the SNES Super Mario World.
