Artist of the Week: Tom Petty (and the Heartbreakers!)

OVERVIEW:

TOM PETTY, man. One of my favorite musicians, ever. I was introduced to Tom Petty through my dad who was really in to his music. He's a really brilliant songwriter and has had a pretty consistent band for several decades (though hasn't always released albums with them).

Petty's music has encompassed many genres. Songs such as "Time to Move on" from the album Wildflowers has a bit of a country influence to it while another song from the same album ("You Wreck Me") is much more of a traditional rock song.

He's had several number one hits: from "The Waiting" (his first #1 hit on the U.S rock charts) to the classics "I Won't Back Down," "Refugee," and "Free Fallin,'" all from his 1989 album Full Moon Fever.

DISCOGRAPHY:

1976   Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
1978   You're Gonna Get It!
1979   Damn the Torpedoes
1981   Hard Promises
1982   Long After Dark
1985   Southern Accents
1987   Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)
1989   Full Moon Fever*
1991   Into the Great Wide Open
1994   Wildflowers*
1999   Echo
2002   The Last DJ
2006   Highway Companion*

Songs with a * were solo records, released separate from his band the Heartbreakers

MY FAVORITES:

This is a pretty tough one! I suppose if I really had to choose an ABSOLUTE FAVORITE it would have to be his 1994 album Wildflowers. It probably has my favorite (at the moment at least) Tom Petty song: "It's Good to Be King." To guys looking to get in to Tom Petty I'd recommend his first self titled album: 1976's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and his first solo record: 1989's Full Moon Fever.

So yeah! If you haven't heard any Tom Petty (hard to imagine, he has a lot of CLASSIC ROCK STAPLE SONGS, which you probably have heard before) you really need to check him out! He's really one of the most underrated rock lyricists around and makes pretty consistently good stuff.

Also something noteworthy: the song Zombie Zoo from Full Moon Fever is pretty much the worst song ever I think. I hate that song so much but the rest of the album is so good.

fun fact: On my VERY FIRST DAY ON IRC, EVER, when I was like 12, I did a np: thing in #gamemaker and it was Tom Petty - Free Fallin'. I only had three songs on my entire PC haha, but Rowain noticed I played a tom petty song and we started talking about Tom Petty and he recommended Wildflowers (i think I only had tom pettys greatest hits on CD or something) so that's how I got in to Tom Petty really.

I've seen the guy's CDs in sale loads of times, but never really picked any up. They're like right next to Tom Waits usually and well shit what am I gunna buy?

Basically I haven't heard a single thing from this guy, which is odd since he has been name dropped so much in GW.

I don't remember seeing Tom Petty come up in #music in... years? You have to be kidding.

But even so, he's still probably one of the more popular artists on GW. Dunno how many actually listen to him but at least most people here know of Tom Petty if nothing else.

Anyway Tom Petty's good, just haven't listened to him in a good while. I think his main problem is that while his music has been consistently good for years, it's been pretty samey as well.

this is one of the guys I listened to a whole lot when I was a kid. learning to fly and won't back down are two of my favorite songs. free fallin' can get pretty annoying, though.

goddammit I know I shouldn't even comment because you'll percieve it as an insult buttttt you didn't really say it in a way that makes sense. adjectives can't be described as "special" or really have that characteristic!

about pettiness, yes.

you sure are right kid but
quit being difficult

y'know that's the part where I don't work myself too much over grammar.

I am in peace of mind, good god!

Edit:
PRAY THE LORD HAVE MERCY
I DIDN'T CAPITALIZE THE "P" IN PETTY

you have to look at his good shit btw.  if you listen to FREE FALLIN then ya it seems kinda generic/samey but his earlier albums and wildflowers are definitely exceptional.

I have a greatest hits cd of his and god damn it is probably the favorite of all my cds, which is odd considering it's such a difference from all of the other music I listen to.

that's kind of weird. until this topic i knew ZILCH about Mr. Petty except his name and even on that i just thought "sounds like boring dad rock.". seeing that picture and those album titles along with the mix of country/rock makes me think i was right.

yeah i don't need to actually listen to music to form an opinion on it!

hey I can actually argue that btw.

I won't but yeah you can form a valid, if incorrect, opinion on an artist without hearing a song. example: supergroup featuring Pete Wentz, Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, and the Jonas Brothers. they play pop punk.

yeah but saying "hmm.. 'Damn the Torpedoes..?' That sounds just like dad rock to me!" (whatever DAD ROCK is. what does that even mean?)

Also.. THAT PICTURE. HE LOOKS LIKE A DAD.

you guys are being kind of facetious though. like it's not Tupac Amaru Shakur, it's 2pac mostly and there's little chance of misinterpreting that. Wu Tang Clan should have brought to mind some asian rock, you used an example of pictures that Jamicus didn't. I doubt Jamicus didn't know anything about Petty than this name; Petty is associated with some dadrock legends like Blue Oyster Cult and REM. I think he meant more like he hadn't seen any albums or heard any songs but that the name had always carried a certain miasma of...dadrock...

he said he knew zilch about him! i assumed he meant that he gets the impression of being 'dad rock' because his last name is PETTY or something. plus saying THAT PICTURE and THOSE ALBUM TITLES give the impression of being 'dad rock' is just ridiculous.

honestly what is DAD ROCK? stuff older people listen to? does that make THE BEATLES dad rock?

also the only person I know of who listens to blue oyster cult is jeff. i don't know if he counts as a dad or not!

well i wasn't makin fun of jamicus, actually. i just wanted to make a black music joke

also i had the same idea of petty about two years ago before I knew about him. i dont have a dad who listens to classic rock so i dont know where my dadrock image came from...

oh oh oh, REM is Dad Rock?

nao nao, I think we're crossing the blurred line here.

REM is college rock from the 80s alright, but I think they are still quite a fresh band, as in, they are not stuck. Accelerate proved that.

Because the beatles old as they are is not Dad rock.

Music doesn't fall into Dad rock, people create the dad rock genre based on their experiences. Probably 20 years from now this will change.
To me Dadrock is Cat Stevens, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Simply Red, A Ha, Police, and such.
It is not like you can say, NO YOU DOLT, THIS IS DADROCK, because it depends.

i probably did know just a little something more than his name and forgot that while still having the lingering opinion of the guy as really boring. is he the guy who the RHCP stole dani california from? that might be where i ran into him.

and ryan i dunno. i have been right most of the time when it comes to guessing if i'll like music or not based on description. like, if someone says "they play grimy punk rock but sometimes they mix it up up with a little thrash metal" i know i'm not gonna like that. there's just nothing in that realm of sound i like. when i just had this vague idea of who tomy petty was i was still open to "oooh, i should actually check this out." but then you said country/rock and it's kind of the same deal. i usually find that music really cheesy and boring. i don't really want to hear a middle aged guy playing a fairly mellow riff with slide guitar in the background while he sings about a highway and some woman he left behind in alabama. it's gonna be a little...conservative

although i'm not saying my reaction is "tom petty? i'm never listening to him. his name is bland and i think i remember hearing he was just a bland bon jovi guy once! fuck petty!"

like, if someone were to make a topic about him or something...i might check out a song or two

edit:

yeah this is the song i heard
