Illiinois governor Ron Blagojevich was arrested today for apparently being caught on tape wanting money in exchange for appointing someone to fill Obama's vacant senate seat!
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was taken into federal custody today on corruption charges stemming from the appointment of President-elect Barack Obama's Senate replacement. Blagojevich and his Chief of Staff John Harris are charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office for the Northern District of Illinois

Fitzgerald said Blagojevich was looking to pull $8 million in funding for a children's hospital after the hospital's chief executive officer did not give a $50,000 contribution to the governor's campaign.
"I don't believe there's any cloud that hangs over me," Blagojevich told WLS-TV in Chicago on Monday, as he responded to the reports of wiretapping. "I think there's nothing but sunshine hanging over me."
He added, "By the way, I should say if anyone wants to tape my conversations, go right ahead, feel free to do it. I appreciate anybody who wants to tape me openly."
Blagojevich allegedly directed Harris to tell Tribune officials that state assistance would be withheld unless members of the Chicago Tribune's editorial board were fired. The Illinois governor saw them as "driving discussion of his possible impeachment," the affidavit said.
"Our recommendation is fire all those [expletive] people, get 'em the [expletive] out of there and get us some editorial support," the governor allegedly said in one phone call.
holy fuck. if this is true, this guy is absolute scum.

we get it, you're a girl.

I voted against this asshole in 2006. This guy has had the shittiest approval ratings in (I think) American history and everything he does is crooked. At first I felt sorry because he's the only Democrat in a cabinet of Republicans but no, he deserves the hate he get.
Fucking serbs. [/racist]
-
yeah dude, i heard about it this morning. apparently he was under investigation before this happened. OUR GOVERNMENT CORRUPT? h..how is this possible?
-
"* Just how insane is Rod Blagojevich?
'Throughout the intercepted conversations, Blagojevich also allegedly spent significant time weighing the option of appointing himself to the open Senate seat and expressed a variety of reasons for doing so, including: frustration at being “stuck” as governor; a belief that he will be able to obtain greater resources if he is indicted as a sitting Senator as opposed to a sitting governor; a desire to remake his image in consideration of a possible run for President in 2016; avoiding impeachment by the Illinois legislature; making corporate contacts that would be of value to him after leaving public office; facilitating his wife’s employment as a lobbyist; and generating speaking fees should he decide to leave public office. '

he really stood up for workers rights in illinois though and i'm kind of sad that the unions there might be losing one of their biggest advocates :(
-
I'd never heard of this guy until my TV got stuck on American news fairly recently. And he actually gave a really good impression (he was outside at a strike, I think).
It's too bad he's turned out to be just as bad as the corporations he's advocating against. :-/

yeah this! he was a big supporter of that workers stand in that's going on right now but apparently it most other areas he was a big dick so
-
Isn't that kind of a trend, union supporters being totally corrupt? Sometimes mob ties?

Most of the board in my union (excluding one black guy) are Italian and I'm pretty damn sure that they were at some point mob affiliated but people spread alot of bogus rumors so its kind of hard to wade through the bullshit.

He's back

No it's not, but thanks for once again regurgitating conservative talking points. Unions are as much "connected to the mob" as any other industry. In fact Unions have for years been victims of the mob, powerful companies have hired the mob in the past as union busters. In fact any tenuous connections to the mob anyone has been able to link to major unions has been them as victims of the mafia union busting them.

hmm yes italians??? must be goomba mobsters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
yeah this guy did do a lot for workers rights Truth, but I think in the long run he was pretty detrimental to unions because he strengthens the stupid unions... are so corrupt and evil image and now idiots like O'Reily and Hannity can spout off about the CORRUPT UNIONS LED BY BLAGOJEVICH.
-

At first I was just going to ignore you but then I re-read what I posted and it did come off as ITALIANSSS!
The same family and group of friends has run the union for the past 20+ years and I've heard multiple stories (STORIES UHUH) about our union head being a part of the mob and then getting voted in as president after two years of sailing which is pretty fucking odd you'd think, I don't even think he fit the prerequisites we have now that you've got to get before you can run. Also, From what I understand no one has bothered to try running against him despite the fact that he's pushed for couple of stupid retirement plans that force you sail with the union for over 40 years before you can successfully retire.
Don't get me wrong over all its a pretty good union and the guy is a great speaker but imo he's getting old as shit and some of the stuff he's done has been kind of shitty. I can't believe no one has used the union's democratic process to actually try to win against him yet!

This guy needs like a goatse painted on his front lawn because he sounds like a huge gaping asshole
Edit: I think I'll use this opportunity to use some of the swears I made up
cockchomper testiclemonger general orifice
Edit: This guy is like if we did everything through the same hole and also Date/Epic Movies came out of it
-

You're kind of sad that a corrupt governor was arrested?
Truth I hope you're not condoning Blago just because he supports unions. This guy is just as corrupt as the conservatives you defame. A couple of weeks ago you were talking about how conservatives are fundamentally evil because they are fundamentally selfish. This guy was trying to sell off a senate seat to secure benefits for his family. Do you seriously value workers' rights, even if securing them means putting guys like these into power?
EDIT:
At any rate, you shouldn't worry. With the economy as it is, I'm pretty sure the unions will come back into power pretty quick.

Illinois AG seeks to remove Blagojevich. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/12/blagojevich/index.html#cnnSTCText)
(CNN) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Friday asked her state's highest court to remove Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office temporarily. Moments after Madigan's announcement, news broke that Blagojevich's chief of staff, John Harris, had resigned, a spokesman for the governor said.
Blagojevich, 52, and Harris, 46, were arrested this week on federal corruption charges relating in part to the selection of a successor to President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.
The governor's attorney has said Blagojevich did nothing wrong.
Madigan's office also asked the Illinois Supreme Court to strip Blagojevich of duties, including appointing Obama's Senate replacement.
"I recognize that this is an extraordinary request, but these are extraordinary circumstances," Madigan said Friday in Chicago.
Madigan said she wants Blagojevich out of office because, given the charges against him, she does not think he can do his job. The court filing asks that Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn become acting governor.
"As governor, Mr. Blagojevich's duty is to do what is best for the people of the state of Illinois, not for himself," Madigan said.
I'm not sure just how much of a chance this has of going through, but I'm sure it'd be a hell of a lot faster than trying to impeach the bastard.
