Post by: Artis Leon Ivey Jr on December 10, 2008, 08:22:42 pm
Sparser this time, but three days to vote. If any of the writers or their fans want to link their works, go ahead. Who's the best GW writer???

ps: this category does not mean best member or poster or staff writer; it applies to writing fiction mostly.

Heh, looks like I'm up against the big boys...

Missing (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=76147.0).  That's half of my NaNoWriMo attempt.  Also, Oil Trouble is a Kevin Dunning short story as well.

i think strangeluv is a pretty good writer but why does it always seem like he just goes into other peoples topics and posts stories? like that one heath made about mog.

Was that a joke, GR

I only do that in the mock-G&Der topics and a lot of those "mocking G&Ders" topics are story topics. I don't think I go in people's topics and post random stories.

I'm torn between voting for Izekeal or Strangeluv here. I will take a while longer to decide, methinks!

I voted for SL because I'm really familiar with his writing and I really like some of his work. A lot of his writing is applied to the games he's made, which I also enjoy. His stuff is used on a lot of different levels, so I voted for him.

Well, while jamicus posted my favourite story of the bunch up there ("A Party Breaks Up"), I think a lot of his other stuff pales in comparison but I haven't read too much of his stuff.

Marmot and Izekeal are kind of polar opposites.

Marmot has a weird, drunken, jumbled style I really like that reminds me of... Charles Bukowski meets Philip K. Dick or something and while his style is aimless and sometimes kind of confusing, I still enjoy reading his stuff.

Izekeal is more conventional, some of the stories like Dashiel Hammett/Elmore Leonard meets Hardy Boys and some fantasy (a genre I don't dig). His stories are pretty good but sometimes I find them a little too straightforward and going "safe routes" and not taking risky turns.

So I don't really know who I'd choose between the two. It's a hard one for me. But I think I'll go with Izekeal.

I am having the same problem, I like their writing but I have no idea which I think deserves the award.

Hmm, I'll have a think about it.

I've read through some of everyone's stuff and after a bit of thinking I'm going to give my vote to jamicus as I like his style the best.

Edit: I was thinking of voting for Strangeluv but didn't want to take the "safe route"

Jamicus, do you write often, man? Or is it just spur of the moment? You seem to have a lot of hobbies.

This was a hard decision. All of you are great writers. I went with Marmot though -- his stuff actually means something, and I like his style, too.

Ok, I went with Strangeluv. The reason for that is out of all of those writers, I enjoy reading Strangeluvs the most.

probably a lot less often than you do, but yeah i do write stuff alot but it doesn't usually go anywhere. i just finished my last piece of uni work for the semester so i'm going to write something just now! i was gonna make a song but i've run out of musical ideas totally, i think i need to learn some new ways of making music/playing instruments.

the reason i make a lot of stuff all the time is cos i don't like the idea of taking ideas from things and not giving any back it makes me feel stupid and boring.

This was actually pretty close for me (all the polls so far)

something about SL going into a topic and posting a story (that was well written) was probably what done it for me. If i could vote for every here I would, and i like everyones writing

Maaan, don't you think it's kind of unfair if people voted for me over others because of those top-of-my-head Mog joke stories (I don't even think I wrote the best ones in that thread... Heath did) than actual story fiction or game script work. The joke stories may be funny to some but they're don't really have any literary worth to say that they should even come close to rivaling Izekeal's, Marmot's or Jamicus' work.

you wouldnt know good writing if it hit you like a brick filled with all da best video game scripts..........

i don't visit the writing forum enough to vote in this topic, but I will sort of agree that A Home Far Away wasn't amazing writing by any means. It was still much better than 99% of RPG's though. It was a simple storyline that wasn't filled with cliches or horrible dialogue or awkward "so, heh..... do you.............. like me??? :-P" characters

I guess, but it was also uninteresting, bland, and Strangeluv himself acknowledged that his characters were wooden and unengaging.  This isn't good writing!  I haven't read Me and Tom but at least that is a crazy/interesting premise.  idk I wouldn't base my vote on best writer on what was essentially a mediocre fantasy RPG.  This is pretty slim pickings, though; guess the lit forum's a lil too dead to furnish a prime choice of candidates???

Yeah I pretty much agree, I didn't try very hard and I wouldn't call it amazing at all, though I did... pour my heart out in the second half of the game and try to improve upon, "interestify" and shape out all the characters from the first bland half, so idk?

Me and Tom Under the Boardwalk rules though!
