Alright so the summer's hit us here in Australia.
I'm one of those people who gets really, REALLY agitated by the heat and since I spend a lot of time on my computer in my small bedroom, it feels like I'm inside a furnace.
By agitated I mean I get uncomfortable and moody, and in worst cases I get dizzy and faint, not a good thing...
The key problems I face here are that my room is small, it heats up really quickly which is awesome in the winter but not for summer.
It has direct exposure to sunlight through its only window from around 7am til 10am with only thin white vertical blinds stopping it.
I leave my computer on 24/7, a lot of us GW members do that so I don't want to hear any "just turn it off" posts because it's unnacceptable...
My computer's fan runs full blast through the summer to keep the inside of it cool, but it blows all the hot air into my room, however on a hot summer day like today my computer still overheated and switched off, this is annoying because turning my computer on (due to it crapping out and being a piece of shit), is a huge battle.
So far my only attempts at fixing all of this have been to peg a blanket up over my blinds to not only stop the light but some of the heat getting in, I'm getting an outdoor bamboo curtain hooked up ouside the window as well so that I don't need to keep the blanket up there.
I have a small desk fan that at least keeps my face cold but the rest of the room still feels hot.
I'm really running out of ideas here but to make this topic actually decent why don't you tell me how you handle the heat through the summer.
If you're anything like me who doesn't have air conditioning or a lot of room to move I'd like to hear your solutions, if any exist.
-
In the summertime here I get those unnatural blue ice-pack things and put them in my bed for a few hours before I hit the hay, cools my bed off and doesn't leak anywhere. I don't know how much this will help the actual room temperature though.
Honestly it's winter here, and I am so damn cold I can barely fathom ways to make a room colder...
-
Take off all non-essential clothes, eat ice-blocks (or put ice in your water, or put water in a jug in the fridge or something). I take it that you don't get a breeze through your windows at all, or I'd suggest that you open them (but leave your blinds closed). Leave your room's door open, maybe? Also, you might want to cool your computer with water-cooling (if it's not too expensive) to stop it from heating your room too much, because it sounds like that's one of your main problems.
-
turn on the AC (crack open a window). you might want to turn off any heaters that you have in your room too, i know you like to keep them going but they make a lot of heat.
-
i wish it was hot here. fuck the god damn snow

at least you have snow, rather than 12 months of miserable rain a year!
-
Wow, I thought that shitty hot/random rain weather was only here in the tropics!

It is, Pink is from the UK.
EDIT: PS Mongoloid I like your icy bed idea.

i live in newfoundland. ALL it does is snow and rain

Most GW members aren't having this problem though, so it's not causing them to be miserable by not turning it off when they're not using it. You're obviously having a bad time with this heat, so maybe you SHOULD turn it off (like I said, WHEN YOU'RE NOT USING IT I'm not saying stop using your computer forever) in order to NOT FAINT from the heat. And, maybe you should spend less time around it in order to spend more time somewhere where it's cool. This isn't some preachy "heh...stop using computer so much" post, this is a "if this is causing you to faint maybe you should reconsider your options until it cools down" post. Plus, since it's overheating anyway, it's probably not that pleasant to use. Use your computer when it's cooler, and get away from your room entirely as much as you can. I had this same problem earlier this year when my dorm switched over to heat in the middle of a heat wave and it all rose to the floor I was on so it didn't matter if your heat was on or not. I could hardly use my laptop because it was so hot, so I pretty much had to just use it when necessary and try to get out as much as possible.
Do you have any sort of library or something where you could use a computer that might be cooler? You could always look into that.
-
My computer's on constantly for downloading purposes so it's more of a necessity to have it on.
The room only gets really hot during the day which is usually fine because I'm at work, then I open a window and have the fan blowing to circulate the air of an evening time. When I leave in the morning, I place the desk fan facing the side of my computer case (side cover taken off of course), to get some extra air in there which helps a lot.
I guess it's only really a problem for me on my days off work, days when I don't have anything to do except browse the internet and so forth.
Mongoloid's method is pretty great though, heh...
I put an ice pack in a pillow and I'm sitting on it, then I have an ice pack in another pillow that I'm resting my feet on. :)
-
The sun here literally fucking burns now. I'm usually one who can withstand the sun but jesus christ I can't take it!
-
Is it worse than the tropics, man? What's funny is that it's usually hot here but when I went to America last year, the heat was even more unbearable in some places. It was... a different kind of heat. A NASTY heat. Thought it was funny cuz closer to the poles, you're supposed to be colder, right? I dunno about Australia, though. I never thought it would be a really hot kind of country.

nah due to the earth's tilt we get more direct exposure than the tropics during summer
-
Yeah it was terrible. It was like a "stinging" kind of heat while it's just uh.. "caressing" here, I don't know how else to describe it.
Anyway man, would it help just soaking your face or something every once in a while? Or when you can't stand it, just take a shower? I never really had to deal with any heat problems since I got air conditioning.
-
all this talk about heat is making me miss summer in the middle of all this fucking snow :(
-
Y'know I've always wanted to try out one of those 'cooling collars' to see if they work; they attach to your neck, cooling the veins and arteries and eventually your whole body. At least that's how they're supposed to work. You might want to look into that.
-
Hahaha man if I ever find one of them I'm so taking a photo.
-
By not turning off your computer you're contributing to the global warming that is causing the heat, think about it
-
You just need some fresh breeze in your room man, open your window, and another one somewhere else in your house so there's some current, it helps loads in my place. I've got a window that has direct sunlight from 2pm to aprox 8pm, sometimes it's hell.
-
Cut out black foam presentation boards to fit in your window and stack them on top of each other. As for your computer... a water cooling system will help in many ways. As for anything else.... minimize the use of other electronics in the room (like TVs, DVRs, lights, consoles, whatever.... they all contribute). A few portable fans couldn't hurt either.
I did everything listed above and not only did it keep the room cool... it kept the computer cooler too by 10 degrees.

They sound really good, if it'd work during the night when I'm sleeping, I'd sooooo buy a hundred of them...
And it's so cold here now, that I wear two pairs of socks, three t-shirts and one hoody!
-
I really don't understand how it can get so cold where I live. Real hot during the summers (excellent time for the beach) but very wet and cold during the winters. I live in the southern most region of Portugal (takes about 2 hours more or less to get to Morocco by boat) and it's even snowed, rarely though.
Australia must be even warmer though...

I've looked at some online sports stores and apparently you can get the higher-grade ones for 30 USD. Alternatively, you COULD make your own I bet. Duct tape a few of those blue coolers together, make sure there's padding so you don't freeze your neck stiff, and there ya go!
At any rate, I'm confused. Does the computer significantly increase the flow of heat in your room? Isn't it enclosed?
-
Like all computers there's grates in the rear and the side to allow the hot air inside it to escape, the fans inside it help with that process...
As far as things go the only other electronic device that gets used in my room is my bedroom light, having that off greatly decreases the temperature, especially at night but then it's hard to type since my hands aren't always positioned correctly when touch typing and I have to re-adjust.
-
Never thought about that. But thankfully my computer's nestled between the desk and the couch so the hot air doesn't exactly leave the area. Bad fire hazard though.
At any rate, don't use incandescent light bulbs. Flourescent ones look and feel cooler, not to mention that they're more efficient and Green Party - happy if you're into that kind of thing.
I wonder if somehow hanging an icepack in front of a portable fan would significantly reduce the temperature inside a room.
-
lol summer in australia
there was a killer ice storm in NYC (and pretty much the entire atlantic north east!). the entire city is without power with subzero temperatures. sucks to be them!

I tried that with a really moist cloth once, it does make the air cooler but the object in front of or behind the fan obstructs the air flow so you don't really get any real breeze coming your way.

In the summer I usually stay in the basement and it's a good 10 degrees colder

What are you going to do in the winter, Mince Wobley?
-

the greatest feat of the modern christmas propaganda... making people believe snow is actually a good thing
-
What are you going to do in the winter, Mince Wobley?
There is no winter here so I'm safe
-
Man what's wrong with you kids? Turn on the AC. Don't have AC? Buy a window unit.
I'm in the goddamned desert, living without AC is bullshit here.
-
In the long run AC will exarcebate global warming so it's also a no-no
-
Yeah I was LOL AC IS TERRIBLE FOR THE EARTH for the longest time too (and still am) but then I went to the Rajasthan desert in India - and had the AC CRANKED day and night. Hypocrit? You god damn bet, considering I live in temperate Atlantic Canada. I really can't knock people for living in 40C climates when they use AC - the heat rarely breaks 32/33C here in the summer, at its worst.
But then, I'd just avoid living in climates like that in the first place.
-
No but it's not just that, earlier this year there was an energy crisis in Argentina because it was hot and everyone was using AC's. Then they made everyone set their AC's above 24ºC
-

depending on where you went, i'd bet this was the mysterious phenomenon known as humidity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humidity)!!!
-
Humidity as in lack of it?

i thought it was p humid in t&t
-
By Strangeluv's description it sounds like he was experiencing a lack of humidity in America.
-
outside temperature here doesn't surpass 35°C at the worst of times (and rarely above 30 even), so it's not really a problem.
Ever since I moved downstairs, I've never had problems with the heat. When I was in my old room upstairs with my computer and all that it did get pretty unbearable sometimes, but it's great now.
-
Which is why my house is going to be either completely underground or at least earth sheltered when I build it
What are you going to do in the winter, Mince Wobley?
Actually, underground homes are cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The earth retains and releases heat during the winter.
-
As one fellow Aussie to another - I understand completely. Where I am is currently going through a cold patch (Thank God!) but it won't be long before the heat reaches the high thirties/low forties mark again. And I am not looking forward to it.
Hence the reason why I am investing in a window AC as soon as possible. For the moment, though - thanks to Christmas and lack of funds (Thanks a lot Christmas) - I'm making do with a stand fan and trips to the shower every time I dry out. Doesn't help that we're going through a drought and have water restrictions, either.
Might I suggest getting some dark rubber-back curtains to block out all the light, a stand fan with an ice-cold bucket of water beneath it so that as it evaporates it gets blown around the room and wet towels?
Grab one of those long ice-packs (the blue ones) and wrap it in a towel, then drape over unexposed areas of your computer.
Wet a face washer, chuck it in the freezer for a while, then drape it over the back of your fan. Also, wash the fan blades (disassembly required) so that there's no dust on them.
Just a few suggestions. Good luck!
-
Christmas in the summer? That is so...weird!
-
We have barbeques and swimming. It's actually rather fun despite the over-bearing heat. Couldn't imagine a cold Christmas. It'd be like a cat with no meow, a dog with no bark, a skunk with no smell...
Besides we have some pretty awesome carols to go with the heat. ^.^
-
I'm in northwest Florida, and I think we're expecting 74 degree highs for the next few days. What the fuck!
-
at least you have snow, rather than 12 months of miserable rain a year!
In Vancouver we have snow for about 2 days and then it's really cold instead.

I would not class Six White Boomers and the australian version of Jingle Bells as awesome christmas carols...
They are embarrassing, I hate aussie pride.
-
southeast USA has some weird temps. Last year we only had like maybe a couple of really cold weeks during winter, but mostly it was 50~ degrees and sometimes 60-70 degrees. It's like 60 degrees here now.
-
Those, I wasn't talking about. ^.^; Sure we got some lame ones, but there are some that are pretty good (and catchy).
As for Aussie pride? Bite me. ^.~

How do you survive 60 degrees???????
-
Here in Siberia, u only find snow, snow n' ice................
-
How do you survive 60 degrees???????
Fahrenheits....
-
Man, I would prefer heat over this blistering cold any day. It was -36 degrees C yesterday, -48 with wind chill... It is just ridicoulous how cold it is.
To be fair though, I dont know what unberable heat feels like, but I know I would prefer a Canadian Summer over a Canadian Winter.
-
I think that blistering cold is easier to take care of than blistering heat; all you need to do is stay inside and bundle up. It costs less than having to pay for AC. Then again, to be fair, I've never actually had BLISTERING COLD or HEAT at all, seeing as how SoCal is pretty mundane in its weather patterns. SUN SUN SUN CLOUDS SPRINKLE SUN. I know I wouldn't survive New York. My hands absolutely freeze up -- I can't even type when it's like 60 degrees F. Sad! Yet I'm applying there...

I hate aussie pride.

no water in the dry season, too much water in the rain season. make me want to see real snow sometime
-
My apartment's cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Thank God for swedish construction laws
-
Damn, you people are complaining about the heat!? Where I live, it's -45 with the windchill! (Celsius)
-
MAn you don't need to bitch about bitchin cold or bitchin heat heat is the fucking worst I've been in japan during christmas on a ship in the middle of the yellow sea without a fucking heater and it was seriously warmer in the fridge in my room than the actual room and I would still take that over a sweltering summer day fuck the heat the heat sucks and I was born in florida
fuck the heat block out the sun with a huge metal dome fuck the heat
-
Yesterday in my town it was -24 F/-31 C. Also it was windy. It was literally not safe to go outside for more than a few minutes at a time.
-
yeah i meant fahrenheit not celcius.
-
well that's weird
-
it's currently -22 celsius here...
-
i like how someone with 0 posts just casually brought back this year-old topic.
also it is way too mild here. they are like frantically REARRANGING THE SNOW on cypress for olympic events
-
IT IS SO DANG HOT RIGHT NOW and i CAN'T BREATHE i feel like i am mummifying HEAT SUCKS
-
It was -25C here yesterday. But I like that better than the heat, so I'm not really complaining.
-
It's like 2 or 3 celsius here. It's winter though so nothing novel at all. Sun is shining, it's just cold!
-
it's 24 F and cloudy here which would be fine if my water heater was working right.
-
They sound really good, if it'd work during the night when I'm sleeping, I'd sooooo buy a hundred of them...

Yesterday it was about -27C here with LOTS of wind which kinda sucked since the wind makes it feel much worse. As a child I remember some -40C though and jesus you're a pussy FrostyPink of you can't take the cold that much.
I miss the rain :(
-
its actually 34F here now. apart from the 60-70 degree temps early last week its been a pretty cold winter
-
it's literally -11 degrees fahrenheit here right now
-
It's summer in here too, I try to keep all windows open, not wear a shirtm short pants, bare foot directly on the floor and it helps loads, also I have a bottle with cool water 24/7 with me now...
-
Summer weather in this part of Victoria is pretty erratic. We go from unbearably hot heat to hail storms in seconds.
-
shut up, it's just the weather.
-
there is a foot of snow outside right now. want to trade places?
-
Its cold and windy here in the middle of the gulf or somethin (I dunno)
I like this weather though and I like working in it because I fucking hate the heat so much. When we were working in mexico I thought I was gonna die and those bastards wouldn't even lemme roll my sleeves up. When I got home my hands and face were the only thing tanned.
-
i don't know about other places but new zealand houses lack insulation something terrible. if it gets below 0C here it will be literally freezing inside too
-
flip the pillow over to get to the cold side

holy SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
-
oh, oh whoa. i take back what i said about it being so hot!!!!!
-
We're having a record snowfall here, nearly 30 inches.
Most we've had here in at least 130 years.
-
I have seen that there are some cooler available now for pC and laptop I have seen it is computer shop so I guess it is also available in your country
-
Two blizzards in a row here. Ugh.
