Title: Recommend MMORPGs!
Post by: AdderallApocalypse on December 18, 2008, 05:19:46 am
Hi there. I am looking for some good MMORPGS to play, and I would prefer that there is no accompanying fee to play online; but if the game is good enough to pay a fee for, then that's ok. I used to play WoW a lot, and it was pretty fun, but I believe I am tired of it now. I used to play Runescape, but now I don't know why because the game sucks. Here are a few guidelines for recommendations:

- Do not suggest WoW, Tibia, Runescape, Everquest, Fly FF, Maple Story, or Guild Wars. Either I didn't like the game, or I became tired of it after so much playing.
- I prefer MMORPGs that are have a fantasy setting, and not something like a Star Wars MMO.

I suppose that's about it, recommend away!

MMORPGs in general are pretty uninspired right now, and if you're looking for a F2P MMORPG that doesn't suffer from crap game play and senseless grinds... You're going to end up sorely disappointed.

If you want a fisher price version of WoW, than Warhammer Online might be up your alley, Omcifer.

The new cartoon network MMO comes out in I think January, but I think the mechanics sound pretty stupid.

Part of it will be free though, so you might look into that.

The Chronicles of Spellborn (http://www.tcos.com/en/index.html)
It's free to try up to lv7. I like it more and more, but I have a strange taste so...
it's still a bit rough around the edges, but it can only become better :P

Also if you try it, got to the Int PVP server (don't remember the name) cause that's where
all the cool people hang. Look for a newbie named Reverie, and you've found me.

I'll add screens later.

Ragnarok, the free version.

Second Life has greatly improved in the amount of decent RPGs hosted within it's world:
http://secondlife.com/showcase/arts/

Furcadia is more socialising but a 'programming' language does exist:

I’ve played my fare share of MMORPG’s and well you have already mentioned a fair few that I have played in your "do not recommend list" apart from Dungeons and Dragons Online which I only recently stopped playing due to insufficient time. D&D Online is different from allot of regular MMORPG’s... you don’t necessarily grind mobs to gain exp/levels, its more quest oriented and grouping is really required if you want to advance. At the moment the max level is 16 so you wont be too far behind anyone, I know how much of a pain it is looking for groups at low levels.. They will be raising the level soon enough I believe.

There is allot of customisation with your look, skills, spells est. and its one off the only MMORPG’s I have played which has properly setup a decent system allowing you to become a hybrid in any class available from a cleric/sorcerer to a warrior/rogue or if you are old fashioned you may just choose to stick with one specific class. Its only downfall which I can think off is its limit with the amount of races you can choose from, a total of 6. It isn’t however free to play and there is a monthly fee.

While I'm taking a break from it, Mabinogi (http://mabinogi.nexon.net/) is pretty decent. They supposedly plan on making it that anyone rather than just people who pay for one of the monthly premium services can do the story related quests.

I know you said more so fantasy MMOs, and that its an old game, but maybe you'd find
Anarchy Online (http://www.anarchy-online.com) worth a try. Its Sci Fi and in the past had a bad reputation, but I've been playing it myself for about 2 years on a free play account and its a pretty solid game.

Otherwise, you could check out the free server they have for International Ragnarok Online. I know I used to be into RO, but not any more.

I found Conquer to be incredibly generic and boring. Playing it to about level 15/20 and just could not be bothered with it anymore.

Also we tried playing Anarchy as a GW group and it was so fucking boring. Even with like 10+ of us it was just incredibly dull.

SMT Imagine is in closed beta, going open soon. It's not perfect by any means but demon fusion is even more addictive and time-consuming than in the main franchise, and the battlesystem requires at least a small amount of skill.

Personally I've enjoyed it more than any free MMORPG I've ever tried but I'm highly biased towards the SMT franchise so take the recommendation with a grain of salt; I've heard of plenty of people who hate the game (most simply don't understand the mechanics, but eh).

It took me 4 years (and a new years resolution) to break from their grip... so I suggest you quit while your ahead. The grass is never greener when you  make a switch between games. It's all the same shit.

That of course is a lie, but I have to constantly tell myself this to keep from reactivating my game accounts. Playing them are not a positive experiance. They are a hobby in of themselves. A time sink. The only ones worth playing are f2p pvp private servers.... if only to show you how worthless they are as games once you are able to reach endgame content stuff by the first hour.

Every time I become bored enough to think about giving the WOTLK 10 day trial a try; I read the WoW forums and that thought evaporates.

Maybe one day these games will be worth playing again, but it's going to take a drastic change that I just don't see happening.

World of Warcraft is a game, Chainer. That game is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that game and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the game, that they will fight to protect it.

...

It was more funny in my head I guess.

The above can be applied to any game. Try saying something bad about say, Warhammer Online or Darkfall Online and watch the morons line up with the personal attacks.

Apart from WoW, the three best MMORPGs I've played at one time or another:

Lord of the Rings Online (http://lotro.turbine.com/): A solid MMORPG. It's got all the usual cons - a grind, dumb enemies, an assortment of fetch quests, etc. But it has a great setting, some actual FUN quests and instances, lots of content, and regular updates, and a lot of all around polish. It's a MMORPG, and pretty unapologetic about it, but it is still a very polished one. It is, however, very much PVE oriented. There's PVP, and it's actually pretty unique, but it's definitely not the focus.

Playing as a hobbit was really actually quite fun. I played a "Minstrel", the healer of the game, and adventuring in the Shire was sort of GOOFY. You do quests like DELIVERING MAIL and PIES and defeating swarms of bees. It's still traditional MMORPG fetch/kill bullshit, but there was something lighthearted about it I guess?

I guess there was also an expansion recently too, which was pretty much the size of Blizzard's WoW expansions (re: big!). I believe it added the Mines of Moria and Lothlorien. Unfortunately, I don't think Mordor, Gondor, Rohan, or Isengard are in the game yet.

Warhammer Online (http://www.warhammeronline.com/index.php): Warhammer Online is really new, just launched in September, and it sort of shows. It's still a bit buggy and rough around the edges, but it's really actually better off than most MMORPGs at launch. The devs seem to be really quick about adding content and hot fixes to the game, having already released a major patch and countless smaller patches/bug fixes. It has some decent, thogh sparse, PVE content, but it's really all about the PVP. You can even level up entirely from PVP, and there are multiple ways of engaging in it - scenarios (think WoW battlegrounds except many more of them and more diverse) and open world stuff like keep sieging and objective capturing. It's a pretty solid timesink.

Ultima Online (lol joke option) (http://www.uoherald.com/news/): No seriously, UO is pretty old and crappy these days I guess, but it was my first MMORPG and I have pretty fond memories of it. I don't know if I can really say if it's any good anymore, I haven't played in years. But few MMORPGs, even today, offer UO's flexibility or dynamic gameplay.

that said, MMORPGs are pretty terrible in general. But consider these king dick of phallus country?

Sorry, but I feel compelled to respond to this.

That's like saying you possess the best tasting earwax.

Quote

That cannot be denied. They've been good on hotfixes, but lately it would seem they are frantically throwing out patches in the hopes of stopping the Hemorrhaging. With ghosting players (or entire armies) and various (KNOWN!) bugs making it live (for the major content patches.)

Quote

It's a pretty solid timesink.

The PVE is pretty decent, and has some good concepts behind it. But after playing other games in the genre it just falls short. Combine in the lackluster PVP implementation and you wonder just where the game's focus was. Allow me to elaborate.

Fact:

The game boasts a large variety of PVP instanced scenarios.

Harsh Letdown:

Almost nobody plays in anything other than the big 4. Each Tier has it's own scenario in which the exp and renown gain is greatest; thus this is exploited. Too many things, people spread too thin. A design flaw prevalent in a lot of this game.

Fact:

The game boasts RVR objectives, including the ability of capture one faction's area, or city

Harsh Truth:

Each RVR objection is static and roughly the same. The skin may be different, but every keep, and objective is laid out the exact same way. Furthermore, the actual act of TAKING a fortress (The last line of defense to the opposing faction's city) is still impossible. The PVP endgame for a supposed PVP focused game is broken; has been broken, and has only recently been acknowledged.

I cannot for certain comment on the current zone capture mechanics, as I've long quit the game...however I can say that once you actually get inside the city; it's not exactly what you expect. Instead of fighting the opposing faction you fight what's essentially a glorified PVE instance. If you find any opposing players, your raid group and switch city instanced and avoid them with ease.

________

It's kind of confusing when you think about it. The Warhammer developers once noted that the exclusion of several faction cities actually helped the game focus RVR into key hotspots, yet the lack of focus is apparent everywhere else in the game. Maybe they realized it too late?

SHIT

99% of this is outdated. Firstly, the major game patch (that's 1.1 I'm talking about, not 1.01, 1.02 or any of the other 1.0x patches) went off mostly without a hitch, though there have been lots of maintenance downtimes for additional patches. ORVR performance has been improved vastly, to the point that fortress sieges actually work, and the combat system itself, a longtime and very valid complaint, has been almost entirely fixed, with the mysterious "lag" between button presses removed. It's now as responsive and snappy as WoW, though I'm still annoyed that animations often play out despite being out of range of your target, though this may actually be working as intended.

I'm now leveling a Knight of the Blazing Sun, one of the new classes introduced in 1.1, and all three scenarios in t1 and 2 pop with regularity. I still avoid Stonetroll because the people that play are retarded and don't understand how to win it, but it's not longer just a Nordenwatch/Morkaines grindfest through t1 and 2. This is helped by being able to queue for all three in a tier with the single press of a button, so people do that much more often. There's a TON of ORVR now too because they added Influence to RVR on the world, as well as increased drops in keep sieging so there's a lot more reason to form warbands. The RVR Influence rewards are really good and worth working towards.

It's a steadily improving game. It has a ton of room for improvement, true. Combat is too CC heavy I find, and endgame needs work still, but they ARE maintaining a solid playerbase (many med-high pop servers during primetime, some even still have queues) and they aren't botching anything.

SHIET

The first and only time I've probably spoken to you, you said something contrary to the actual combat system working well. Is there some comparison video out? Should the combat system actually be running well at this point; there is still the troubling issue of each class at 40 being nothing but a simple button mashing class.

There's very little room excel as an individual in this game, and the RVR areas are so shallow and linear that they don't allow for very many varieties of group tactics.

Keeps are still samey and tedious, and while I hear they actually added some incentive to defend; there's still room for improvement. Actually fixing the postern door realm rank abilities would be a good start.

The only real effort I've seen from mythic thus far is tacking on rewards for actions nobody wanted to do otherwise.

They havent touched how pathetic city sieges are, they haven't addressed how every outdoor objective is exactly the same; or how boring the segregated "RVR AREAS" are.

I'd make a comment about fortresses, but I haven't been to one that hasn't crashed; and I'm not going to waste money for the sake of finding out.

If you're dead set on checking the game out, I'd at least wait a some more.
