Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis today announced that the team has signed free agent centre Mats Sundin. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are very excited to have Mats join the Vancouver Canucks,” said Mike Gillis, Vancouver Canucks General Manager. “Playing previously in two Canadian markets and consistently being among team and League leaders in scoring, Mats has proven that he can excel under pressure. He adds a wealth of experience, leadership and skill to the Canucks.”
"I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks,” said Sundin. “Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit. I want to thank Mike Gillis and the entire Canucks organization for their professionalism throughout this entire process."
Sundin, 37, joins the Canucks organization after playing over 1300 career NHL regular season games with Toronto and Quebec. In an additional 83 Stanley Cup Playoff games, he has recorded 74 points (35-39-74) and 72 penalty minutes. In 1305 regular season games, Sundin has recorded 555 goals, 766 assists, 1321 points and 1065 penalty minutes. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, he held the Maple Leafs franchise record for most goals (420) and points (987) in a Toronto sweater.
At the conclusion of the 2007-08 season, the 6-foot-5, 230 pounds centre ranked 22nd all-time in career goals (555), 34th all-time in career assists (766) and 30th all-time in career points (1321).
The Bromma, Sweden native has also represented his home nation in a number of international tournaments. During his international career, Sundin has won the World Championships on three occasions (1991, 1992 and 1998) and was captain of Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics, winning gold, alongside Canucks teammates, Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin and Mattias Ohlund.
For his accomplishments on the ice, Sundin has been selected to play in the NHL All-Star game on nine occasions (missed 2003 due to an injury). In 2002 and 2004, Sundin was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team and was named to the Olympic Tournament All-Star Team in 2002.
Sundin was selected first overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Quebec Nordiques, becoming the first European hockey player to ever be drafted first overall.

I don't really make a lot of threads, but for this case...I just HAD to make one. Mats (don't call me fats) Sundin has just announced after M O N T H S he going to join the Vancouver Canucks[/color] terms of the deal is not announced. But I'm figuring it's around 7 - 10 million for just the season.
A day after Trevor Linden's retirment, the man that this entire city has picked on finally makes the best choice, I for one welcome Mats to our team, and because of this great signing ( ) I've decided to make a thread about it.
GO CANUCKS GO!
D. Sedin - Demitra - H. Sedin
Wellwood - Sundin - Raymond
Kelser - Burrows - Bernier
Hordichuk - Johnson - Hansen
Ohlund - Salo
Bikesa - Edler
O'Brien - Mitchell
Luongo
Sandford
WIN! :woop:

I don't know what to do with this topic.
-
Keep it up, and see how it goes. Can't be more worse then the other ones.
Let S4D have his day in the sun.
-
Turn this into a long and tedious one-sided debate (we need more of those)
--
And post scandals, statistics etc if possibl
-
I don't really follow baseball but I'm happy you're happy :)
-
I finally realize why you all hate this silver4donuts guy
-
Who hates him?
-
The press conference is coming up in a minute, looks like it's a 1 year deal thought.
Also it's 5 - 6 net wise, 10 million pro-rated. And they are saying he will probably play his first game on the 28th or 29th. I have tickets for the Dallas Stars game for the 4th of January. Looks like I'll get to see him. :woop:
-
hockey? shitty game.
and I watch football, tennis, basketball and rugby
-
I'm not happy with this deal, being a Calgary fan and all.
-
Go Canucks go! Canucks all the way!
-
But you guys in Calgay did SIGN Bertuzzi and Cammareri to help you on offence, and they also said that the Oilers won't be happy, but they have Erik Cole. So everybody wins in the end.
Besides...you should of seen my face back on Draft day.

Most of them are shitty games but it's funny how people devote so much time and effort to them... while the global warming is out there
-
Dayum...The Leafs are screwed.
Not that we weren't before.
What's our motto again? "Better luck next year..."
btw, for some reason every time I see Sundin I think of Campbell's Chunky Soup.
-
@ Mince Wobley - Lol, most games depending on your team and players can sometimes be boring, there are a lot of games back when I actually fell asleep on the couch they were SO boring, and there are others that are like 7-6 games in the shootout for 12 rounds, it's like most sports...like, I never watch a lot of NFL games, but the playoffs last year and superbowl are ones I'll remember for a long time. Global warming won't really play a factor anyways in hockey being around silly.
@ Dulcinea - Burke will bring your team back from a joke of a franchise, just like he did for us. However...I am looking forward to the February game when we face the Leafs again. Mats should get a standing honor, until he scores a couple of goals.
Lol, Gillis is getting mad of being asked the same questions:
"Duh...does this mean your a contender?"
"What are other teams thinking?"
"When is Mats playing?"
DUH DUH DUH!!! :fogetlaugh:

Have you not heard? Bertuzzi just scored his first goal in 17 games!
-
This is good stuff because my room mate is a Rangers fan and he really wanted Sundin on his team.
-
By the way don't anybody troll in this topic just because it's S4D. I'm going to be very lenient with warns so don't come in and say WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT HOCKEY because fuck you.
-
You mean strict not lenient
-
B...but Bertuzzi scored an amazing goal the other night.
And I feel a little (**** that!) bad for the Rangers. (Revenge for them beating us in 94!)
If the Canucks win the Stanley Cup this year, I want them to say before they lift the cup up: This is for you Trevor, we did it!
Edit: Thanks Roman. :)

Oh well, I still love Bertuzzi.

dont you love how they started the season out strong and then tanked for a couple weeks?
I love listening to hockey games 3.5 nights a week it is seriously THEBEST
-
The Rangers don't have a bad team, even without Mats Sundin they still are pretty damn good. Hell, I even have a couple of them on my pool.
Rangers are my third favorite team, Buffalo is 2nd. :)

you think you're so fucking smart

With Kamen Rider Decade coming, and now this, we are going to have a great year 2009!!!
-
I'm suddenly excited for Vancouver again. I became a Canucks fan while living in Surrey for 3 years, but that waned when I moved. Now that they have a credible offensive player, I believe that they have the talent to go far this year.
I have no particular attachment to any one team, but Vancouver is near the top of my preferred list. I like watching talented players more than rooting for a team so right now I'm a fan of Washington, Pittsburgh and Montreal. But, being a child of the 80s, I still love the Oilers.
-
i know mats. hes my grandpep
-
I had a classmate who's name was "Mats Sundin" - we made fun of him.
Sundin should have stuck with Toronto all the way out or quit.
