Title: Prince of Persia
Post by: dragonx on December 19, 2008, 12:23:07 am
I didn't see a topic for it so if there is one on page 2(i only looked on page 1) then I apologize

The new PoP is out now and I think it is a really cool(not awesome) game. I guess topics like this need me to back up why I think it is cool so I guess I'll do that in a short list:

- Prince is no longer emo:
PoP: WW:PoP 2008
(fun fact: the emo prince picture up there was my avatar for whenever that game came out!!!!!)

I actually like the story and the characters dont feel like they were thrown in to just pretend there is some development to a platformer/slash up thousands of enemies!!!!

The combat is a bit different now too, it kinda went from being about killing room full of enemies to one on one combat which is just REALLY FREAKING PRETTY. The art style of the game is probably my favorite thing about it, the places and attacks and ORBS OF LIGHT are just really aesthetically pleasing and i really really like it and give it an A+

and for all of you who have played it I am betting your only problem with this game is that it takes the word challenge and throws it away like it never existed since well

YOU CANT FUCKING DIE

so now who here at gw has played this game and what do you think of it

also here are some really cool things the characters say::::

Neat use of filters. I think it's much more interesting than the overused HRD/BLOOM. I think I will play this game for the art direction alone. The gameplay... not so much. I doubt this game will add anything that hasn't been covered in the other PoP games already.

How can you not die? Like what mechanic is in place instead of that? Anything? Or do you just KEEP GOING

Well this game definitely looks awesome. I'm getting it for Christmas so I gotta wait until then to see for myself.

Also Farmrush, there is a companion you have with you who saves you when are you are about to fall off a ledge or something.

You can't die by falling in a hole because the girl saves you every time and places you at the start. If you die by a monster, you just restart the battle. Also, I don't think you even get an hp bar.

Yeah, you can't die because (the most irritating sidekick I've ever encountered) Elika magically flies and hauls your ass out of the abyss before you hit rock bottom. There's no HP bar, the edges of the screen turn red during battle if you get injured.

Personally, I find the art style of the game unique and different but I don't really care for it. The music is nice when it isn't repeating itself and sometimes Prince doesn't go where I want him to go but, overall, I'm enjoying the game. It's one of the better platformers I've played in a while. I just wish Elika's powers had somehow been rolled into Prince because there are moments when I just want to reach through my television and knock her out.

Am I the only one who thinks Prince sounds an awful lot like Nate from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune?

Well atleast this "Elika always saves my ass" thing is used in atleast one puzzle, well sort of puzzle.

And getting saved in battle doesn't restart the fight, it just heals the enemy a bit, by 1/4 I think.

Still it feels like it is infinite sands of time usage, like a previous PoP game with cheats.

The game is really easy, but I'm not sure if I really think that's a huge fault. The game rewards you for success and doesn't punish you too severely for failure. Elika is basically just an automatic quicksave that doesn't have a loading screen.

The combat is rad.

I really love the art style but I'm really struggling to get into the combat. I get the whole 'impossible to die' thing is to keep the game flowing smoothly, but instead the gameplay is broken up by constantly having to pull up the menu and look at the combo lists (and my fingers are aching from using mouse/keyboard. It's definately easier on a controller, from what I'm reading). I think the combat was a hell of a lot better in Warrior Within, and the dialogue is just so bloody awful that 'not being emo' isn't really much of an improvement. It kinda feels like this game is more Princess of Persia and you're there just to move escort her around.

First impressions are basically it's alright, but nothing special.

And what the hell is going on with this thread? The forum layout is completely fucked for me.

The game is pretty to look at but pretty boring because there's no consequence for poor decision making.  It worked in Prey because it always kept you in the action but it doesn't work in a platformer because dying and then warping to the last platform you stood on really interrupts the flow of gameplay.  I'm pretty biased because PoP has always been about super tough platforming and puzzles but now you just warp to the last safe area instead of having to learn from mistakes by repeating a section over again.

I don't think it worked in Prey at all. That (aside from the incredibly shit plot 'twist' near the end) was my only problem with the game. It actually completely ruined the game for me when I knew I couldn't die, because instead of being careful and trying to save health and ammo I was just running in gung-ho knowing that if I died I would respawn instantly with full health.

The last obstacle course in The Sands of Time was intimidating. I was being so incredibly cautious because of the long platforming stretches with no checkpoints after difficult parts. I died so many times near the end, which completely sucked and I hated the game just for that part; plus it made the following attempts that much more intense. I really don't want to revisit that BS, but this game is way too easy in comparison to that last part in SoT...the rest of the game was pretty easy for me, though.

IIRC, it's the same VA.

I just found a combo I like and use it constantly:

Attack, Attack, Elika, Elika, Throw, Jump, Attack, I think it is.

One of the same, anyway. I didn't realize there were two different guys playing Nathan Drake. I should really start watching end credits of games.

Anyway, a combo that seems to work really well for me is throw followed by three or four Elika attacks. Mindless killing power if its timed correctly.

Yeah I'm pretty bummed that they made this so easy!  At the same time though if Elika didn't save you every time you fell you would see "game over" a lot.  And that's not necessarily due to carelessness; you have to have QUICK REACTIONS the first time you run a course so you fuck up a lot.  This game eliminates the trial and error thing that a lot of games do which is good, but it's at the expense of any actual challenge which is pretty lame.  I think they should have just thrown in the time manipulation from the last PoP trilogy because that really was the best game mechanic ever.

Either way though I like this game.  The graphics are really really really good and as far as I'm concerned it's still pretty fun to jump around on shit even if it really just boils down to timing my button presses correctly.  And the combat is fun too, although I really wish that you could actually die from it.  Oh well!  I like it any way.
