Title: Internet Film Gems
Post by: Dulcinea on December 19, 2008, 06:48:57 am
We all know that there are a ton of videos on youtube or other free video sharing sites that are popular but not particularly well-made. Still, there are many videos which are, and are done very professionally despite low budgets and no studio backing. I thought it'd be nice to share some independent films from the net which are particularly good. Not just a dog running in circles, or a guy falling down the stairs.

My favourites are:

My Name is Lisa

It's been a while since I really looked a lot for indie films but occasionally some come up that have stuck and are sort of favorites.

Pallogrillin palvojat (Ball Grill Police)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDxNVvUkN0w
A story about a dystopian future where grilling sausages is illegal.

Rare Exports Inc.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUiDDWi8k1o
There's a part 2 as well. That is almost as good.

The Gamers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTEHqAeanw (Part 1, the rest can be found in the links)
A bunch of RPG nerds sit around and play their game.

Sumu (The Mist)
http://www.sumu.coldspell.fi/index2.htm
Fantasy story.

I also used to be hugely into Star Wars fanfilms at fanfilms.net about five years ago. I haven't really kept up with what is new over there but some of my old favorites were probably:

PA Wars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivdwbKfZqNc
And the sequel
Duel of the Fakes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7lgxA2Vo_A
About a lowly production assistant who fights the Darth Producer.

The Formula
http://www.theforce.net/fanfilms/shortfilms/theformula/index.asp
Following a bunch of friends on their quest to make a Star Wars fanfilm.

My Name is Lisa

This one is very sad. :(  Very well done though.  So far it's my favourite one I've viewed.  Good acting all around for a web video.

Black Button

I didn't like this one too much.  The acting was a bit distracting and I thought the writing was pretty bad.

My favorite video is still Hard n Phirm's Pi

This is weird...like far to weird...oddly enough it's the only video I've wanted to watch more than once.

The only independent show I cant think of getting into was one called "The Angry Video Game Nerd" im pretty sure it was called something like that and it was basically about a video game nerd who was crazy as hell reviewing old school games.. I found it hilarious and it was well made, I believe he still makes the show either weekly or on a monthly bases.

At least no one mentioned Hooking Up. The only remotely online Indie film I've seen is Street Fighter: The Later Years.
